Evil In The Stormlight Archive
DrakeMarshall replied to Stormrunner1730's topic in Stormlight Archive
I still hold that shards are basically amoral. Odium is the perversion of something that isn't inherently evil. Presumably, in the context of the other 15 shardic intents, divine wrath is not intrinsically evil. The reason why Odium is problematic is simply that unadulterated wrath is a lot more dangerous than unadulterated honor, for example. That said, shard vessels aren't amoral. They are real people, and had moralities. If Hoid's opinions are to be trusted, we could conclude that Ati was generally a good person (obviously nobody is 100% good, but some are certainly more good than others). Ruin's intent ultimately forced him to do evil things, but Ati restrained Ruin as best he could. Rayse on the other hand was a distasteful person to begin with, according to Hoid. Also I would contend that selfishness is more or less the definition of evil intentions. And by that standard, Sadeas is quite evil. I agree that Szeth and Taravangian are not necessarily evil. Both of them at least believe that they are acting for the good of others. But I'm not sure I could call them moral either. In the case of Taravangian, there are really only 3 options: 1. Taravangian's beliefs are correct, and his actions really are a necessary evil to save the world. In this case, his actions are vindicated. 2. Taravangian's beliefs are incorrect, and somebody has tricked him. Nonetheless, he can't really be blamed for his actions. He was decieved, and really did believe he was doing the right thing. 3. Taravangian's beliefs are incorrect, and he has tricked himself into believing them. In this case, he is culpable for his actions. I kind of figure that what's actually going on here is some kind of mix of all three of these. So I would hesitate to label Taravangian as either notably evil or notably good. He's somewhere in the middle (when we learn the source of the diagram perhaps a more conclusive assessment could be made). -

Granted. You can control the flow of time itself. So, you can turn back time, for instance. But you never asked for your memories to be preserved when this happens (seriously, that's a pretty important "required secondary power" for time control). So you can turn back time, but once you get a few seconds into the past, you forget that you ever turned back time. To you, it is as if you were still just about to try turning back time. So you wait a few seconds until the point where you initially turned back time, and then turn back time again. And then forget again... So you are now stuck in an infinite loop. The entire timeline of the universe hits a dead end, ceaselessly looping back in itself, the same events playing through like a broken record. Time cannot continue moving forward. So basically, you've just caused the end of the universe. I wish to be a bronze compounder. -
A Stormlight Archive TV show would probably be one of the few shows that I would seriously follow.

My one regret is that this game will probably run some time after Oathbringer comes out, and while it isn't meant to be strictly canonical, I will still probably need to make some tweaks in response to Oathbringer's release. The other side of that coin of coarse is that Oathbringer will be out, and I'll get to read one of the books I've really been looking forward to. So I suppose I can't really complain.

Hmmm I sense the arts of thread necromancy at work (when you spend much time in the dark alley you tend to develop a hightened sense for necromancy ). I mean, the princess bride movie having a frame story has some solid justification, because the author kind of had a frame story where he pretended to be abridging an existing book. That said, framing is a time-tested means of telling a story. Seeing as Hoid's stories in-universe have a way of becoming much more vivid then just spoken words, what if the narrator was in fact Hoid? (yes, that would mean the frame story would also take place in the cosmere, not on earth) It would kind of work, seeing as he isn't a major character in any of the books yet, but he has an overarching importance that all the cosmere books have hinted at.

Interesting, thank you. Time to do some research. When I get time anyhow. This game is still quite a ways out. Hmmm so the most relevant takeaway I am getting from LG26 is to go easy on the defensive powers. Or at least, if there are a significant number of protective powers in play, then the eliminator team ought to have something to balance it out.

Hmmmm... Out of curiousity, what are some of the most complicated games that have been run on the shard? I am interested because I am making a game I suspect will end up being pretty complex (that said, I am inordinately pleased with all of the mechanics I have come up with so far). And I'd like to examine some of those past games and see what worked and what didn't work. I am fully aware that complex games are exponentially more difficult to balance, and I need all the information I can get if I am going to make this game into something that approximates my vision for it.

Huh. So somebody blocked Len's rule from even being proposed, so yeah. There's that. I trust that at least someone will appreciate the irony of being accused of using my powers to take choices away from players. In any case, the bunny rule is fixed, so there's that. Sheep decided to take pity on us and interpret the rules according to their intention, I guess. Anyways, peace out, I got things that need doing.- 713 replies

I don't recall saying I intended to pass anything like that. I'd be more interested in passing a rule that dealt with contradicting win cons in a way that isn't boring like that.- 713 replies

Are remarriages a thing? If so, does anybody want to share my nearly impossible win condition, by any chance? In all fairness, it isn't truly all that impossible. Before we decided to reveal, it was in fact quite likely.- 713 replies

Wait actually, I'm wondering what the deal is about bunnies now. Cuz items can be passed. So if we really don't like bunnies, what's to keep us all from passing them to their creator, who probably does like bunnies and wouldn't mind recieving a horde of them? This whole "bunny scare" is actually not really justified in that case.- 713 replies

Long Game 38: In the beginning...
DrakeMarshall replied to AliasSheep's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Now that this rather unfortunate business is settled, I think I ought to try for a pancake. “Hey people, I’ve found a way to make the rabbits eat less, while retaining all their fluffy cute-ness. If you could just give me a hand, we’ll have all this sorted out before dawn tomorrow.” "Nonense!!!" Ati shouted. "There will be no sorting this out. The purpose of creation is to destroy! Bunnies were an interesting creation, but to continue creating new things we must let some of the old ones perish, else the world becomes crowded and stagnant." "See, <ketek>we create to destroy / things get complicated when / there is too much creation / when things get complicated / we must destroy to create.<ketek> It's a cycle. The end of the cycle is no more good or evil than the beginning." Apparently people didn't really like that idea. Some of the more exuberant members of the crowd were closing in on Ati. Bunnies trained their eyes on him hungrily. Oops... "But hey! But you guys are forgetting something! These bunnies might be cute and fluffy, but they're about to devour all these cool monkey things over here!" He gestured to a group of machete throwing apes, who were cowering before a horde of hungry looking bunnies. "What about those guys?" Nobody in the crowd seemed to care very much. "Fine then! Apes and monkeys! I summon thee! Fight for your lives against this menace!!!" Ati conjured a horde of angry looking simians, and set them on the diety known as Straw, who was advancing towards him. And so the clash between monkey and bunny began in earnest. Oh, also: Thank you. I got 3*(2**4) actually, not 3**4. That's what repeated doubling does. I reached this conclusion because the wording of this rule seemed to suggest this. However, I utterly and completely agree that this is not balanced. 12, honestly, isn't all that balanced, but it's not quite as obscene as 48. So I personally think that was a very good decision on your part.- 713 replies

One point of business before cycle's end. Below is a vote tally. For the lynch, not the roleblock. Arinian (6) - Randx3, Roadwalker, Steeldancerx2 Drake (10) - Wilsonx3, Winterx3, Strawx3, Grumpy Dula It looks like I'm still leading the vote. It is now the last hour of the cycle. I didn't really want to do this, but I daresay my hand has been all but forced. In the least, we get to find out sheep's decision on how power actually works. Straw King Cole Hemalurgic_Headshot Hastur Hastur Hastur little wilson Jondesu Orlok Tsubodai Sart Ecthelion III Flash Sami Bartimaeus Darkness Ascendant randuir Roadwalker Majestic Eternum DroughtBringer Elithanathile Elenion Aonar Faileas Bort Grumpy Dula Clanky Magestar Lemonelen Megasif Brightness Radiant The Young Bard RNG hath spoken, and Straw has been selected. Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw Straw 47 votes in total (one orange vote remains on myself). We'll see how many of them count. But even if doubling doesn't stack, that's still 3*4-1=11, which is more than 10. Sorry 'bout this, but, well, I made my warning pretty clear I think.- 713 replies

Rand, you advice is very well placed. However, I'm neither a secret keeper, nor planning on forcing any rules (although depending on how one reads the rules, one might reach the conclusion that I theoretically would have the ability to influence the rules voting... part of the reason the rule is being proposed at night is because this hypothetical vote manipulation can only take place during the day, so this is a sign of good faith). I'm pretty sure Len has already submitted a rule proposal, but I think the specifics I brought up might be relevant to factor into a proposal somehow. Anybody else have insight? Anyway, night folks. I gotta finish up this paper...- 713 replies

Long Game 38: In the beginning...
DrakeMarshall replied to AliasSheep's topic in Sanderson Elimination
Your fine. Now, onward: 1. I agree that my role is vastly too powerful. That's why I'm pursuing a means to alter the game, instead of trying to play the game straight. I could have kept the whole worldsmith-brotherhood thing a secret to everybody, and used my voting powers to direct the lynch on my vendettas. Or I could have tried to force a rule that would have given me even more unfair advantage. But none of this would be fun for anybody involved. That said, my role may or may not have the same capabilities as I originally was lead to believe. Sheep had certainly confirmed that I could summon 4 NPC mobs in a night. But they are now saying that the doubling might not stack the way I would have guessed. 2. Please elaborate on this. When and how have I abused any power? 3. I don't either. That's why I'm trying to alter the game in the first place. I suspect that your issue with me is somewhat misdirected, because we are trying to address the exact same problems. We can discuss what the best way to do that is, but seriously, we all agree on what issues need fixing. All I'm trying to do is call a vote where everyone is free to choose what course of action we want to take to fix things. 4. Very well then. Winter, you may be boring if you so wish, or vote on yourself otherwise. In any case, your current votes on me will now no longer count, if my read of the rules is accurate. Okay. Does that make some sense? What I am hearing is that the general sentiment is most nearly to take option 7. Now, frankly, if that is so obviously the sentiment, I don't know why anybody takes issue with there just being a vote on the options, since 7 will obviously win. That said, I think option 7 is a good option. Can we discuss some particulars of how this would proceed? I propose that the normal happenings of the game should be suspended while we reconsider each rule. During this time, for ease of communication, how about we just give all the players a doc to discuss things in? The game shall remain suspended for the duration of one day cycle. After this time, the next cycle shall commence at whatever time is most convenient for Sheep. For each rule, a player may do one of several things. Vote to leave the rule untouched and in-game. Vote to repeal the rule completely. Propose an amendment to the rule. Vote for a proposed amendment. Vote against a proposed amendment. For the sake of organization, I propose that a vote tally and listing of proposed amendments all be kept in an easy-to-read format at the very top of the doc, so that it won't be unnecessarily painful for Sheep to take a tally for what players have decided. A measure is passed if it gets plurality by the end of the allotted time (I don't want this to be able to drag on indefinitely, hence why I don't think we should do it by majority). However, since players are able to vote against a measure as well as for it, there isn't any danger of a rule passing without popular support. Also, we could consider calling a vote to randomly reassign membership to each faction, and possibly role distribution. There are both good reasons for and against that course of action, but I'll save them for when we are actually voting on this maybe. Does this seem like a reasonable action plan? Alternatively, we could let the game proceed as normal.- 713 replies

Very well. Lets try again then. 1. You think my role is vastly too powerful. 2. Furthermore you believe I have abused this power, and/or am in the process of doing so. 3. You don't like the alliance between the Worldsmiths and the Brotherhood of Peace. 4. You want to have the choice to be boring or not. Those are your main points. I'm not missing anything. Right? I see. Before I address this, do please let me know if I have correctly summarized your concerns as such: 1. You think my role is vastly too powerful. 2. How exactly have I backed you into a corner? All I have done is presented you with a choice. A choice to consider making a choice, even. And you in turn have backed me into a corner by putting me in the lead for the lynch. If, by the end of the cycle, I am still leading the lynch, you can reasonably expect that I will defend myself. The lynch will be redirected upon a randomly selected player from the pool of those who voted against me. I'd rather not have to do that, but right now I'm backed into a corner, as it were...- 713 replies
