Wayne Disapproval Thread (Potential Wayne-related spoilers)
CaptainRyan replied to aeromancer's topic in Mistborn
Excellent point and one with which I agree. IIRC, Wayne was corrected on both occasions by the people he was speaking with - Marasi made it quite clear that Ranette's interest in women was not a "phase" and Ranette reacted negatively to Wayne's suggestion of a threesome. Wayne himself even backed away from the remark. Perhaps, because I understand that Wayne's remarks were insensitive, I am reading too heavily in to the reactions that other, less "aware" people, might miss but I like to think that Sanderson, through those negative reactions to Wayne's comments, made it clear that Wayne was in the wrong for saying those things. -
How could he get stronger? He does not have Oaths to speak or a spren to grant new "levels".

Later years Dalinar is somewhat reminiscent of Captain America: honorable, patriotic, devoted to doing what is right regardless of the cost and, now that he has Stormlight, some super powers as well! But yeah, at this point almost every story that can be told, has been told. Sanderson's genius is that he can take an old story, add some interesting spin to it and voila! We love it!

Favorite non-Cosmere character?
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in General Brandon Discussion
If Matrim Cauthon counts (technically Sanderson wrote about him but Jordan "created" him) then Mat. Otherwise, Stephen Leeds from Legion for sure. Such an interesting character. -
Will the Cosmere Be Completed?
CaptainRyan replied to VirtuousTraveller's topic in General Brandon Discussion
The God Beyond forbid! -
There has been some seriously great discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of Brandon's take on romance. Loved the commentary here as it showed me that some people interpret it just like I do and others have ways of looking at the situation that I would not have come up with on my own! I think I lean more towards the OP (Luciellav) on this. Brandon, either by choice or because he has not spiked a romance-inclined author, does not seem overly interested in dishing on the romances. While what he provides is, from my perspective, adequate, I do think it is one of the weakest parts of his books. I would not mind a bit more information from each character's perspective about how they view some of the others - especially people they are, possibly, romantically interested in. Also, Luciellav, I am totally with you on the Wax/Marasi pairing. You are not alone!

All aboard the SS Jasher! Vashnah? Erm, help me out here folks. You know what, just get on the dang ship!

Gavilar vs Szeth shows that a shardplate wearer is fast enough to punch one of the most skilled hand-to-hand warriors in all of Roshar directly in the face even when that warrior (Szeth) is filled with Stormlight. If Gavilar was merely stronger, but not faster, then I submit that there would have been no way he could have landed such a solid blow on such a skilled warrior who was also magically enhanced to be much faster than normal.

Perhaps Sanderson is reserving Jasnah in case he reaches a point where he feels more comfortable writing a LGBTA+ character? Or maybe not. If not, I think a lot of people are missing the colorful writing on the wall: Who is a known scholar with a fiery red passion for research who would definitely appreciate a woman as wonderfully bright (get the pun?) as Jasnah? Hint: he wishes he had made the choice that let's him sleep at night.

I am not sure if you are saying "faster" as in running speed or reflexes. If it is the former I would submit that we do not know if the average thug or the average shardplate wearer would win in a race. As to reflexes, I definitely agree that pewter provides innate balance whereas shardplate does not. OTOH, a trained shardplate wearer definitely has faster reflexes than a normal human. I do not know if it is greater than a thug burning (or flaring) pewter. A novice/trained thug would have an advantage over a new shardplate wearer as the innate benefits of allomancy are, basically, a passive effect but once the shardplate wearer has some experience I am not sure which is the superior in terms of combat speed.

The Hero was not from Terris so it makes sense that he would have to make a long journey... to Terris. The Hero (Alendi) used Terris people to guide/help because they were familiar with the area (remember Rashek and his friends were originally hired to help with the pack animals and such). I do not know if being close to Ruin's pool affected the Terris people but it seems, at least anciently, the Terris people might have been geographically nearby Ruin's shardpool.

Thank you for the clarification as I was interested in that WoB. Have an upvote!

IIRC, we also have not seen the Cognitive Realm in either of these cases so it is possible that the Cognitive Realm IS different in these scenarios.

As a self-professed "fellow who reads way too much" I have to admit that I have never seen "nonplussed" used for "at wit's end". [note: I am American so I cannot speak to British or French literature]

Shadows of Self dust jacket synopsis--anyone else put off?
CaptainRyan replied to Serity's topic in Mistborn
I don't even... what? I own the hardcover of SoS (never actually read it as most of my reading is done on my kindle app) and I will definitely be checking this out when I get home. How did that EVER make it past... well, anyone? This is pretty mind-bending to me haha. -
The mists also seem to be, at least, semi-sentient and might resist being "condensed". Also, are we saying the Mists are Lerasium because they are of Preservation?

theory Voidbringers, the Knights Radiant, and Gavilar
CaptainRyan replied to DrakeMarshall's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is exactly why I distrust the connection between the creature at the end of BoM and Voidbringers. Sanderson is drawing way too straight of a line between to two for me to invest (pun intended) in the Red Eyes == Voidbringer theory. I think the phrase, "There is always another secret", applies quite nicely here.- 47 replies

Wayne Disapproval Thread (Potential Wayne-related spoilers)
CaptainRyan replied to aeromancer's topic in Mistborn
If anything, I am of the opinion that having a "good" character make awkward, hurtful, insensitive etc. comments is a positive thing. Why? Because it can help us recognize that even "good" people hold "bad" opinions, ideas etc. Wayne is a good person who puts himself in harm's way to save total strangers on a regular basis. He is also, apparently, insensitive to the struggles of the LGBTA+ community. If a "bad" character had said those things we would just have a one-dimensional bad character. By having a "good" character, maybe even a character some of us admire, say those things then it can become a moment of self-reflection. Of course, this is just my opinion and every reader is entitled to their own opinion but I really do feel like Sanderson's characters having flaws, "bad" opinions, etc. helps make them more real and more relatable. -
Excellent points all. While the answer has little-to-no value in figuring out more about the Cosmere I am academically interested in Brandon's thought process and have added this to my (growing) list of questions to pose to Brandon the next time I can make it to a signing. Most likely that will be next year if I fly to Utah for the midnight release of SA3. (I am so hoping that my wife and I can do this!)

Adonalsium was, essentially, useless?
CaptainRyan replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Thanks for the support! I like your analogy and the thought process behind it. I emphasized the one line that really stuck out to me: Adonalsium might not have had different Intents because, at that time, they were simply a single Intent. Perhaps that Intent was balanced perfectly (which might lead to stagnation) or perhaps it was weighted in a certain way (which might lead to that becoming the dominant action). We do have some WoB's about the Shattering of Adonalsium - for example, there is a WoB that states Adonalsium could have Shattered into different Shards; the sixteen (16) Shards we see now were not the only possible outcome of a broken Adonalsium. I guess, for your analogy, we could say that if we dropped identical spheres they would shatter differently. It was a good analogy and definitely shows that there is a lot to think about with Adonalsium's Shattering. -
You are absolutely correct on that definition. Typo on my part - thanks for the catch. Holding a Divine Breath, however, most likely results in the same stretching no? We know from M:SH that... so it stands to reason that a Divine Breath would provide the same benefit.

Yes! I thought the EXACT same thing when I saw the cover! Chris McGrath had definitely just finished watching Mission Impossible or Minority Report!
-
I think it could be argued that they are Heralds (of the Almighty). Remember that the information on how to properly clean and care for wounds came from a Herald, the information on how to farm came from a Herald etc. I am not sure their status as "Heralds" is limited to announcing the Desolations. My impression is that Brandon is, basically, using the term Herald as a less earthly form of "Apostle".

Well, 'technically', his arms were visible in the book. Also, relevant: https://xkcd.com/1475/
