What Are You Watching Right Now?
PeterAhlstrom replied to Silus - Shard of Flame's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I liked the first episode of Fairy Tail when I saw it at Dragon*Con. (But I also liked the Rave Master manga.) -
Question about unreleased works
PeterAhlstrom replied to MasterGhandalf's topic in General Brandon Discussion
No, it doesn't apply to people who you can physically hand a copy to, as long as they also understand the restriction. -
Is this just goodreads screwing with me again?

author sued by publisher for self publishing
PeterAhlstrom replied to guess's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I'm flabbergasted. I don't know what exactly the contract says, so I don't know if what they've done is legal. Anyway, a number of Tor authors and authors from other SF/F publishers (including Penguin/Ace/Roc; the story above is about a different genre) sell smaller projects by themselves on the side. It doesn't seem to be an issue. The types of contracts Brandon gets generally have right of first refusal clauses. He couldn't sell Scribbler to another publisher because Scholastic had first refusal rights for his next children's novel (and YA counts as children's). So he eventually sent them a proposal for Steelheart, which they turned down mostly due to them knowing they wouldn't be able to satisfy Brandon as a publisher due to the Alcatraz problems. That freed up Scribbler to go to Tor (as THE RITHMATIST). -
Question about unreleased works
PeterAhlstrom replied to MasterGhandalf's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Mass market paperback Dragonsteel was listed on Canadian bookstores, and that's where other sites got the info. I mentioned this to Tor back in May and they said they'd look into it, but the info is still out there. This listing probably stems from way back when Brandon was writing Liar of Partinel and Tor was filling out their publication calendar for years to come. Brandon has various multi-book contracts signed with Tor that have since had their titles switched up. Alloy of Law and the Rithmatist are taking slots originally meant for that Dragonsteel/Nightblood contract. Plus I just noticed an oddity. There's a Dragon Steel book by Laurence Yep, and a Way of Kings book by Drew Lawrence. What is up with all the Lauwrences? -
They did this at Stormblessed before WoK came out. You just message the admin saying you have the ARC and asking for access, and they check a box in the backend.

Gotta love Mistborn haters... Not
PeterAhlstrom replied to mycoltbug's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Now someone on the Amazon Alloy of Law forum is wondering whether Brandon is obsessed with Terry Goodkind. Sigh. (I wouldn't dogpile the thread though; that would just look bad.) -
Question about unreleased works

Dragonsteel is a printed book. I don't know its current interlibrary loan likelihood but nothing stops you from trying. I called Elantris a trunk novel because it was firmly in the trunk by the time it got a publication offer. Its was written back before all of the trunk novels that we are talking about, such as Dragonsteel. All of Brandon's trunk novels had satisfying conclusions, but most had setup at the end that made it obvious they were meant to be followed by direct multiple sequels. I think Elantris is the only one that Brandon intended from the start to have a sequel that was many years later, with its main characters being side characters in the first book. The followup to Dragonsteel for instance would have been immediately after the first book, with the same main characters, or at least with a gap of no more than a year, like the published Mistborn trilogy. -
New Book by Brandon Sanderson Released
PeterAhlstrom replied to Zas678's topic in General Brandon Discussion
iBooks is not by default DRM-free. Publishers/authors have to choose it specifically (like ChAIR did for this book). And there's no good way to tell before you buy something whether or not a book is DRM-free. iBooks does have the best terms for paying authors of the major stores out there, but the DRM thing is not something you can rely on. -
A small con like this doesn't need to have more than one writer guest, and typically won't. Though Brandon may send me since he can't go.

Question about unreleased works
PeterAhlstrom replied to MasterGhandalf's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Brandon cannibalized the magic system and at least one character from Aether of Night into Liar of Partinel. But that book didn't work and he hasn't decided if it will stay cannibalized into the Dragonsteel series or if he will separate it out again (when he gets around to rewriting Liar of Partinel from scratch). Some aspects of Aether of Night were also put into the Mistborn series. Decay in that book is Ruin. Obviously Ruin would not show up in a different Shard book now. Aether is the trunk novel with the most overt Shard presence. Also, it was never intended to be a standalone, especially with the blatant sequel setup at the end. None of Brandon's trunk Shard novels were meant as standalones, unless you count Elantris with its non-immediate sequel.- 43 replies

Those are the only letters. The vowels are all there in the picture. And for a soft G, use a J. For W, use U.

I'm still reading fanfiction. Currently on Bishonen Senshi Sailor Moon, in which guys in the Ranma cast become Sailor Senshi (Usagi etc. don't exist). It's pretty funny. And last week I got to the current chapter of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality (longer than Way of Kings), which I highly recommend.

New Book by Brandon Sanderson Released
PeterAhlstrom replied to Zas678's topic in General Brandon Discussion
It's supposed to be the same price no matter what platform. $2.99USD in the US, different prices in different companies based on exchange rate. ChAIR is not a big publishing company; this is their first book ever. Their focus is video games, so you can't expect them to be really good at book backend stuff. -
The Navani pages are still translated. They're in English using the Alethi alphabet, when originally they were in Alethi using the Alethi alphabet. It's done to show a taste of what the writing looks like. And I see that I already answered the other questions.

The ebook has about the same artwork as the paperback, but the resolution isn't very good.

The Nook version hasn't ever been up, but when it is, that link will work. They're having some problems on the backend. There will be other vendors eventually, but right now you can buy the iBooks version using iTunes and then read it anywhere else. There is no DRM so you are not locked to iOS. (However the Kindle version mistakenly was released with DRM; they're fixing that.) -
This is drawn from that NPR top 100 sf/fantasy poll that was going around last month. I had read 58 on the list.

Soooooooooooo, did anyone read it yet? -
Adobe Caslon Pro. It's a very common font. I picked it, and I like the Th ligature too. I was using Lord of Chaos as my base book since it was a similar size, and I believe that book also uses a variation of Caslon (though it doesn't have the advanced ligatures). The metrics are pretty much the same at least. Warbreaker uses Adobe Garamond Pro. Alloy of Law uses Fairfield.

What Are You Watching Right Now?
PeterAhlstrom replied to Silus - Shard of Flame's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Yes, that's why we felt justified skipping it. There were some entertaining bits toward the beginning, but it just got to a point where we didn't care about any of the characters. -
What kind of deadline are you looking at?
