theory-questions Mechanisms governing Surgebinding
Oversleep replied to Oversleep's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, the Stormfather said that Dalinar has to be a Radiant without Shards. So I guess Bondsmiths didn't use it. As for the rest, we have to count colours of the Radiants appearing in Dalinar's visions. We could cross out some Orders which use Shardplate. -
Best Twinborn Combinations (Excluding Compounding)
Oversleep replied to DeadFencer's topic in Mistborn
If he wasn't so arrogant (or maybe longing for a fight) to not use chromium... But on the other hand he knew that the times of Lerasium Mistborns have passed thousands of years ago (and we don't even know if Lerasiumborns can affect metals inside somebody) and his Allomancy was stronger than Lerasiumborn, since he rebuilt himself with more Preservation power and he was a powerful Feruchemist, and on top of that he was a full Compounder. He had literally dozens of ways to kill Vin without giving her time to even react (the simplest of thme being chromium), but he simply sat on his throne while watching as Vin was struggling with Kar and he didn't move as Marsh was charging him.a I guess the only way somebody may have stood a chance against him was Feruchemist who had decades of speed, mental speed and strenght stored. Then use all of that in a brief flash of power to run in and tear out atiumminds. Well, if said Feruchemist broke the sound barier and TLR wasn't focused or maybe blinked so he wouldn't see his opponent until too late.- 111 replies

theory-questions Mechanisms governing Surgebinding
Oversleep replied to Oversleep's topic in Stormlight Archive
I know this. Yeah, but my point is... it's like Shallan and her illusions feeding of her Stormlight - she no longer has visible Stormlight leaking out of her, the illusions take whatever leaks out. So I thought Shardplate would make use of that leaking Stormlight, so the amount of Stormlight the Shardplate needs to power itself doesn't come entirely from what the Surgebinder actively puts in. Is what I wrote comprehensible? -
Radiants - Bond more than one spren? {{Spoilers}}
Oversleep replied to FormlessFox's topic in Stormlight Archive
I reacall something along the lines that somebody asked Brandon if Radiants grow gemheart in their hearts and that's why they can hold Stormlight perfectly.- 13 replies

I don't know if anybody already posted that... First of all, fuel. For Surgebinding it's obviously Stormlight which needs to be inhaled by the user. As long as the user is holding Stormlight inside, he has access to Surges. I think we all know that. But what I want to say is that to produce any effect on object other than the Surgebinder himself, one has to infuse that object with Stormlight. The implication is that, unlike Allomancy, user has to touch anything he wishes to influence. We had seen both Szeth and Kaladin infuse objects with Stormlight to use Lashings on them. We've seen Shallan feeding illusions with Stormlight and giving Stormlight to objects during Soulcasting. Lift infuses seeds. Ym touches the boy to heal them. So nothing can be done from a distance, you have to physically touch something to infuse it. This changes many things about fighting. Now for the questions: Can Radiants infuse things through Sharplate? Does Sharplate prevent leaking Stormlight from Radiant's body, collecting it accumulating it in itself, basically closing the circuit? How does Stormlight interfere? For example, Kaladin wants to Lash Shallan, so he comes up to her and infuses her with Stormlight. Would Lashing work? Could she just take this Stormlight for herself? Could she choose to let the Lashing affect her? What if Kaladin wants to Lash somebody who already inhaled Stormlight? Can he use that person's Stormlight against their will, and if not, can he do so using surprise when opponent wasn't focused? If he can't use somebody's Stormlight at all, he needs to infuse that person with his own Stormlight, but can he force Stormlight into somebody who already has Stormlight in them? What about more Surgebinders? Let's say that two Windrunners at the same time want to Lash the same object in different directions. Would both succeed in infusing, while the object would move in resultant direction? Would they be pressing against each other to infuse it? Would each infuse part of it and the object would rip from different gravitational forces? Does the oath-level matter in these cases? Does amount of Stormlight inhaled matter?

On the other hand, dividing atoms means some nuclear explosions, so it would be a little overpowered.

Radiants - Bond more than one spren? {{Spoilers}}
Oversleep replied to FormlessFox's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, first of all Shardplate does not scream when a Radiant touches it. So it is not a dead spren. I remember some WoB about full Radiants having gemhearts (?) or something like that. I think the Sharplate is grown by the Radiant like some kind of scales...?- 13 replies

To me, the name Releasers was about releasing vast amounts of power... like, say, explosions and stuff. As Kalak observed, they made even rocks burn. I think it's also a safe guess they were about "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" given the name Dustbringers and Surges of Division and Abrasion. If Division lets you part a given object into dust and you can simultaneously manipulate friction between those molecules with Abrasion, then... I am not sure, what. Any physicist here?

Who is the *BEST* swordsman in the cosmere?
Oversleep replied to hula's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I meant it more like blade hitting some part of the armor and sliding to hit the body... unless you wear a full plate armor, which is heavy. That will in turn impair speed and mobility... Basically, full Shardbearers fight with swords lighter than a regular sword (and also two times longer and broader) while wearing an armor which is granting additional strenght and energy. So getting rid of Shards may be tough. -
Who is the *BEST* swordsman in the cosmere?
Oversleep replied to hula's topic in General Brandon Discussion
As for Shardless Adolin... It's not that much matter of losing strenght or speed of Shardplate... What really is the matter that fighting with a sword and fighting with Shardblade are very, very different things. With normal sword parrying and blocking is different, for starters, since you can't block with the edge as you would do with Shardblade. This alone forces a lot of changes to the way you fight. Even more, if you use a shield. No more blocking and parrying with the sword, you have to get used to blocking with a shield and also to having your sword blocked not by another blade, but a shield (this changes quite a lot). What's more, the entire mechanism of the fight changes. You have to learn to use the sword and shield. With normal sword, you can't just smash the same segment of opponent's armor to get through - you have to aim for the openings and holes and so on. Without Shardplate, you have to be more carefull, since no armor provides as much protection as Sharplate. You can't just think 'hey, I will receive that blow to the side, since the Plate there is in good shape and at the same time I will aim for his head'. This blow can be potentially fatal for you. Not to mention the radical change of length of the blades and the distance from your opponent as a consequence... I am not an expert in swordfighting, but I think most of my points are valid. -
When Reading a Book Goes Horribly Wrong
Oversleep replied to hopefulmorning's topic in Entertainment Discussion
I read 'Game of Thrones', thought it's fine, then "Clash of The Kings" also was kinda good, "Storm of Swords" was pretty good, but I have to admit I skipped sometimes just to know what happens later with Jon Snow, and with all this build-up I slammed into "Feast of crows". And that was the end of the series for me. As long as plot was somehow progressing, I could not pay attention to all those flaws of Martin's writing, but 'Feast of Crows" bore me to death. And seriously, I don't understand all that love for ASOIAF. It's pretty mediocre, at best, because author is scared that his characters might actually accomplish something and he would have to worry about sticking to their plots. It's easier to have them fail constantly and then die when he can't make out more failures of them. Also, as far as worldbuilding goes, the only interesting part would be North and the Wall. I love the Wall. I happen to love Lem's books and even though I haven't read that particular book, for me using his name as equivalent of "not finishing a book and abandoning it" is pretty much like coining the term 'Sanderson' with the same meaning, just because somebody picked up tWoK, couldn't make it further than a hundred pages and declared the book bad. No offence to you, of course. Also, his 'Solaris' is pretty short, albeit very much of that subgenre of sci-fi about philosophy and asking questions about the world. It's about scientists studying a living organism which is coating a whole planet Solaris like an superocean and they try to determine whether it's sentient and if they can communicate with it. But it's so bizarre and alien that they even can't understand it's life funtions. Also, some strange things happen with minds of those on that planet - they see their lost loved ones. Don't expect many answers, though. And, of course, Lem's "Fables for robots" are very fun and quick to read. What it's about? Well, these are some kind of folk fairy tales, except whole universe is populated by robots. Robot dragons taking away robot princessess and so on. Try it -
Allomancy, E=mc^2, and the Law of Conservation of Energy.
Oversleep replied to Thermophile's topic in Mistborn
I always thought that in the process of burning (which gives access to Preservation) Allomancers also metabolize metals in magical way which doesn't poison them and remainders of metals safely travel through their digestive system to the very end, finally returning to earth. As for the thermodynamics, I assume things in cosmere obey them, it's just that Investiture has some way to hack the entrophy to convert the end-product (which is probably heat) back to Investiture, thus making Investiture level constant. -
People you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley
Oversleep replied to Voidus's topic in The Alleyverse
Well, I already got somebody to accept my spike cookie and I had his soul thanks. So I guess I want to join the Dark Alley. Also, I am trying to start the group of Knights Theoretic, for the purpose of having more and better Theorybinders. I hope I will find enough people to speak the Words... for I fear that time of Confirmation and Negation is coming. And I got Theoryblades, they're cool. -
Songs That Make You Think of Stormlight Archive
Oversleep replied to Random Observations R Me's topic in Stormlight Archive
Papa Roach - Last Resort Perfect Marsh Theme. In HoA, when he is under Ruin's control and as he is planning his suicide, he contemplates on his life. Loss of his mother, leading and abandoning rebellion, infilitration as an acolyte, losing his sight as he was receiving Inquisitor spikes... and then losing even his mind to Ruin. It fits perfectly. LORDE- Everybody Wants To Rule The World It brings to mind power struggles in Roshar - both these official between Alethi Highprinces and those secret wars waged by so many secret societies. And the last part makes me think of Skybreakers, who find themself in the middle of Desolation even though they fought so hard to prevent it. El Voltage - Saved Song It fits Mistborn for me... I will translate words here, so you can judge for yourself: -
Well, with emotional Allomancy you can control Hemalurgic creations. This includes koloss, kandra and Steel Inquisitors. Inquisitors may be hard, since they remain human, but the mechanism exist. Nobody has ever succeeded in using it, though (Vin tried once on Marsh, but at the time he was directly controlled by Ruin, so go figure) The mechanism of being broken you mentioned applies both to Allomancers and Surgebinders - Allomancers Snap when they have some traumatic experience (ritual beatings of nobles, for Kelsier death of Mare, for Marsh when obligators killed their mother, for Vin probably being born, for mistfallen... well, they got really sick and those who were weak even died) and Surgebinders also have to be broken somehow to establish the Nahel Bond. Hemalurgy is so destructive to the soul and mind of individual spiked that it's possible for them to be controlled by powerful Soothing or Rioting.

Well, the First Ideal is revealed and it's indeed compatible. As for the Second and subsequent Ideals, it depends on the order.

Matrix of Nth grade - NxN matrix. The question was if there are such matrixes A and B that for any possible matrix X this equation is fulfilled. Since not every matrix has its inversion, therefore I couldn't pick B=X^(-1).

Allomancy, E=mc^2, and the Law of Conservation of Energy.
Oversleep replied to Thermophile's topic in Mistborn
I know. But what I was wondering about is how does it work? With Steelpushing, you convert Investiture into kinetic energy (and some heat due to air friction). Because of physical processess some day all of energy will become heat, but in cosmere it doesn't work like that since Investiture is spent, yet somehow is constant. The question is, how this "standard cycle" of Investiture works. Exactly this. -
Where's WalDo: The Kandra Worldhopper
Oversleep replied to Kobold King's topic in Cosmere Discussion
WHAT IF EVERYONE IS KANDRA?! Like, every character apart from main characters is being impersonated by kandra? For additional hilarity every kandra was told that he is the only one sent there. And Sazed just became the biggest troll ever, because he found that harmony lies in irony? Now every kandra spy he sent is becoming super paranoid because there is something off with people around? -
the difference here is that Leras knew that Elend will be okay. Vin would heal him or he would become Mistborn. It's a preserve-preserve situation. And Ruin did not create. He simply destroyed a thing to augment another. yeah, Odium is probably one of these Shards with more freedom Well, Honor knew what Odium is up to, so he chose humans he deemed worthy and gave them a choice. He didn't force Oathpact on them. They knew what they were agreeing to do. And Tanavast probably knew that Rayse will kill him, so he did something to give humanity (and other Shards since Rayse seems trapped) a chance even without him around.

I just realized some crucial difference: some Shardholders have more freedom in their deeds than the others, regardless of their minds being warped to its Shard Intent or not. It depends on the Intent. For example: Preservation - makes it holder want to preserve all things. Cannot create, cannot change, can only preserve. Ruin - makes it holder want to ruin everything. Cannot create, cannot preserve, can only ruin. Odium - makes it holder want to hate everything (and apparently being hated by everyone) while Shards like: Honor - makes it holder want to be honorable... but he still has freedom to do anything, as long as it's a honorable thing and he is honorable about it Devotion - similarly, it only requires the holder to be devoted to some cause, doesn't specify what cause. And maybe inspire devotion in others. It's late in the night, so I will try to map other Shards later
