Is Scadrian metal required for hemalurgy?
Weltall replied to Zallek Windblade's question in Cosmere Q&A
@NysemePtem First off, please use quotes so it's easy to tell where the WoB ends and your own ideas begin. Second: -
Are people from taldain and scadrians secretly aware of each other?
Weltall replied to Gh@wk's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Welcome to the Shard! As a general statement, people on any given world are not aware of the existence of other worlds but certain individuals or groups might be. The Five Scholars from Nalthis for example were aware of other worlds, the aforementioned people from Final Empire-era Scadrial who were involved in interplanetary trade would have known (and Rashek knew via his Ascension) and the Ire from Sel at least are aware of other worlds. But Scadrians generally or Taldaini generally are not aware of other worlds, at least not by the points we've seen so far. The only location in the Cosmere where we're certain the general public is well aware of the existence of many inhabited worlds is Silverlight, which is a city in the Cognitive Realm where people from many worlds live together.- 3 replies

I think that's a reference to an old paraphrase that Hoid used feruchemy to know where he needs to be (as opposed to the same underlying mechanic of Fortune that F-Chromium uses) and it doesn't actually confirm or deny that Hoid can use atium. His response wasn't even about atium specifically but 'I never confirmed Hoid has feruchemy' more generally so I'm not sure if we should read too much into the apparent non-contradiction. My guess is that if there's anything to this topic vis a vis lerasium mistborn, Connection and atium, it's something he's going to give us only in response to a direct question about godmetals, or if at some point it becomes relevant to a future book.
-
A-Gold is something that a couple fans have discussed and Brandon has noted that it would be really useful for Forgers creating Essence Marks. But it can't do as many things as Forgery, despite being based on the same fundamentals:
-
Kind of. The only mistborn we've ever seen burn atium are Scadrians, who are literally made of Preservation and Ruin and so have Connection to both Shards and by extension their godmetals. A good question for Brandon might be if a non-Scadrian who became a lerasium mistborn could burn atium and its alloys; that could clarify the way the Connection works.

Technically you can store Breath in any metal and retrieve it again by using a dud Command, so there's nothing special about nicrosil in that regard. Regular Breaths don't stick to the soul in the same way that a Divine Breath does, so they're not subject to being stolen via hemalurgy. It's likely that you couldn't store them in a metalmind because they don't affect the spiritweb in the same way, but a Divine Breath might be able to interact with F-Nicrosil in some way.
-
Yes, but since Breath keys itself to the recipient and allows anyone to Awaken, an edglium/lerasium alloy allowing you to Awaken would seem like an awfully big waste of godmetals since you could get the same effect for much cheaper by just buying a few Breaths. I have to imagine some other effect would be the result instead, like maybe rewiring the user with enough Connection to Edgli/Nalthis that they could possibly Return after death if they meet whatever conditions Edgli has, which is the one thing we know can not be done by a non-Nalthian obtaining Breath.

As a general point for you to bear in mind in the future, if Earth appears in one of Brandon's books, it is not set in the Cosmere. Brandon has said that it causes too many problems for any version of Earth to be included, even a really funky alternate Earth. And welcome to the Shard!

Is it possible for a metal to function in only one of the Three Metallic Arts
Weltall replied to Quantus's question in Cosmere Q&A
@GoWibble Brandon has since canonized that Hoid did in fact consume the lerasium. -
Is it possible for a metal to function in only one of the Three Metallic Arts
Weltall replied to Quantus's question in Cosmere Q&A
Given that you can use metal from other planets where lerasium never existed, that's correct. We even have a WoB on iron specifically, stating that Rosharan iron works just as well as Scadrian iron for Metallic Arts purposes. -
Per Bands of Mourning, it stores 'the ability to use Magic System X' and it works like a coppermind meaning that it's not consumed when tapped but is more a discrete 'you have this while tapping and lose it when you stop tapping' sort of thing. It can store the ability to use other magic systems as well, like Surgebinding from the Stormlight Archive. On its own, a nicrosilmind could be used by a full feruchemist or a twinborn sort of like a hemalurgic spike for a power you already have, making you stronger in that power while tapping. What the unsealed metalminds do is let anyone tap the abilities stored in the nicrosil, giving them access to powers they wouldn't normally possess without needing to be a Soulbearer themselves. By the way for reference, here's one of the WoBs where Brandon makes it clear that the MAG is not canon.
-
No, Sazed says that he's spoken to Vin and Elend and they're happy where they are. That happened in the Cognitive Realm before they passed Beyond as seen in Secret History. Both Brandon in WoBs and Sazed in Bands of Mourning agree that Sazed does not and cannot know for certain what the Beyond is and his claims about it are simply what he believes. When Brandon says that he's never going to explain it, that means that he's never going to make clear whose interpretation (if any) is right and as such, the Beyond could represent an afterlife or it could be a cessation of existence and it's up to the characters in-universe and us readers to decide for ourselves.
-
I know you're not really being serious with this but I just have to point out that, assuming you're talking about the Beyond and not just hanging out as a Cognitive Shadow post-death, the cosmere having an afterlife is not confirmed and in fact it's something that Brandon has explicitly stated will never be definitively answered.

My first instinct would be to say it's a Liar of Partinel/Dragonsteel reference, since while we don't know what the 'gods' of Yolen are in cosmere terms right now, we know that they existed (plural, per Hoid's comment in Warbreaker) and their corpses were believed to be where the fainlife first emerged per the chapters Brandon shared, non-canonical though they are. That said, since there are so many things that could be considered a god in the cosmere, we really can't say for certain. For my part, I'd love to know which god out there wound up worshipping Hoid by accident.

Nightblood wasn't in Honor's Perpendicularity at any point in the battle. The Perpendicularity was centered around Dalinar (visually represented as a column of light) Szeth was quite some distance away and the thing collapsed before he returned to Dalinar with a now-sheathed Nightblood. What we see happen with Szeth is due to the sudden surge of Stormlight that blanketed the area but that wasn't the Perpendicularity itself, just an effect of its proximity.
-
Why does Odium occupy the perpendicularity in the Horneater peaks?
Weltall replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
By controlling Cultivation's Perpendicularity he effectively gets to keep the vast majority of humanity from having any access to Shadesmar, at least not without him knowing about it. He can't stop Elsecallers but they're about the only people who can transition between the realms without going through that Perpendicularity, since the Oathgates are currently locked down to prevent Physical-to-Cognitive transfers. That it also keeps worldhoppers out of Roshar may or may not be an intended side benefit, likewise that it keeps Hoid from leaving. But yeah, I suspect the main reason is simply to keep control of the access between realms for its own sake rather than because he has a particular goal in mind.- 15 replies

As mentioned, that's not how Identity as we understand it works. Now, messing with Identity can be used to make certain magics that are naturally keyed to an individual either usable by everyone or at least usable by anyone who currently has a 'blank' Identity: Per this WoB Identity manipulation can definitely be used to access Breath in an object someone else Awakened, though whether it requires a blank Identity on both sides or just on the part of the original Awakener isn't certain. Breath is interesting because it rekeys itself to the Identity of its recipient whenever it's passed using the 'My life to yours' Command. Storing Identity would also leave you open to a whole lot of things including making Forgery easier to use on you but it wouldn't let you use any Essence Mark because those are still designed to work on a particular individual with a distinct Identity. By extension it would also mean that if you had one of your own, you couldn't use it while you had a blank Identity. Since aluminum/chromium are known to work on non-Scadrian magics it's a safe assumption that yes, a duralumin/nicrosil burst would do similar things to enhance non-Scadrian magics. With Surgebinding the effect would probably be pretty much the same, forcing all the Stormlight into whatever application of the magic the user is attempting (at least until the duralumin/nicrosil runs out) and resulting in a sudden burst of power. AonDor might be similar to what happened the first time Raoden successfully drew an Aon and wound up igniting part of the library by accident.

If you're asking how the allomantic powers would work against other magic systems, there's a couple things to keep in mind when building your RPG: - Things that are Invested are themselves resistant to being affected by Investiture, the more heavily Invested the greater the resistance. There's a long WoB here that goes into A-Iron/Steel being used against Invested objects which you might find useful. The short version is that pushing/pulling Shardplate is going to be extremely difficult and a Shardblade even harder, to the point that under normal circumstances they're not going to be affected by F-Iron or Steel. You'd probably need a duralumin/nicrosil boost to have any effect. - A lot of the magics seen in one system are related to magics seen in others. A-Electrum for example works similarly to Sak's talent from Sixth of the Dusk and A-Copper works like Kokerlii's talent, or vice versa. So if you've got one magic system that looks like it does similar things to another, they're generally working on the same fundamental principles. That might help you figure out some interactions. I don't think that a coppercloud is going to hide the visual effects of someone's Breath aura but it might prevent people who have means of detecting Investiture from sensing that so-and-so has a whole lot of Breath. We do know a coppercloud can hide things within it from BioChromatic lifesense. - A-Bronze is confirmed to work on all kinds of kinetic Investiture. That means that it could be used to detect a Radiant holding Stormlight and if they're actively using a Surge while the Seeker is looking, there would be a distinct 'pulse' that could identify which Surge it was, just like there is for allomancy. We've also got WoBs that a Seeker could 'hear' the Rhythms on Roshar but they wouldn't necessarily understand them without additional help. By extension a Seeker could sense Sand Mastery, Awakening, active uses of AonDor etc. One last caveat, A-Bronze generally doesn't work on Investiture that's just sitting and not doing anything, unless you're talking about extremely high concentrations of it like a Perpendicularity. This is why it's so hard for a Seeker to detect feruchemy. - Aluminum is a Cosmere-wide Investiture sink and does wonky things within every magic system. It's known as Ralkalest on Sel and can't be Forged, it can't be Awakened and leaving enough of it in a recently deceased body could prevent them from Returning but just killing someone with an aluminum weapon won't do it, it can't be affected by Surgebinding (except that you can Soulcast things into aluminum, but not the other way around) and can do things like block spanreed communication and hide Surges from detection if you do it within an aluminum-lined room. We know that aluminum resists the supernatural (but not purely physical) cutting power of Shardblades. - A-Chromium could definitely drain Breath or Stormlight (like a larkin) and could be used to kill a Lifeless or Returned by draining the (Divine) Breath giving them life, but it doesn't work instantly so you'd need to hold on to the target long enough to get all the Investiture and chromium burns quickly. It would probably not work to destroy a Shardblade (much less Nightblood) since they're so Invested that you'd need a ton of chromium and lots of time and Nightblood certainly isn't going to give you that before it (or its wielder) decides you're Evil and need to be Destroyed. However, we do have WoB that a Leecher who's using their powers could prevent someone from summoning a Shardblade in the first place. Hope some of that helps.
-
I imagine that if in Brandon's head a Shardblade and a lightsaber block each other without the one damaging the other, that a lightsaber would have the same effect on Plate as a Shardblade does: It'll damage and eventually destroy sections of the Plate with repeated hits but it won't cut through it.

Related to this, Cryptics also showed up around Elhokar (in what sounds to other people like paranoid rantings) which by that point could be because the spren in general are paying more attention to the Kholin family or because they were especially interested in Elhokar personally. Or a bit of both, given how his father, uncle, sister and cousin had been/were currently proto-Radiants and he was also ultimately deemed Lightweaver material.

Is Knights Radiant powers Hereditary
Weltall replied to Ricocheting Windrunner's question in Cosmere Q&A
As already mentioned, you can't inherit Surgebinding powers because the magic comes from a bond with another sapient being who has to choose you, but being connected to someone who already is Radiant makes it more likely for a spren to bond you. One little detail to add (and it sort of goes to the original question about which powers the children of Radiants might have) is that just because you're connected to someone of any given Order doesn't mean that you would necessarily attract a spren associated with that same Order, even if you're a Squire. So you could be a child of two Windrunners and end up as a Skybreaker if you were a better fit for a highspren than an honorspren, or you could be a child of an Edgedancer and Elsecaller and end up a Dustbringer, etc etc. -
Trails of Cold Steel (and the Kiseki series in general)
Weltall replied to Zurvanight's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Ouch! Yeah, I bought the Steam versions of CS1/2 when they came out to support XSEED (having already played the PS3 releases) because all the work they put into it made it a 'I must get this' option but my machine at the time just couldn't handle it. I upgraded to a new machine last year which could, totally worth it. As an added incentive to pick up a PS4, since Falcom is releasing the Crossbell games on the platform and there's a very good chance they'll be picked up for localization, a PS4 will eventually (fingers crossed!) let you play official releases of those too. If you want an answer to that question: I suspect it's mainly the 'so storming huge' option. Actually, my guess is that we'll only get some really juicy hints at the big picture and Ouroboros' ultimate goals to preserve most of the big surprises for those three future arcs, especially since the last two Cold Steel games already gave us some good stuff to think about. The most recent update we got in a Dengeki PS special feature gives us a couple ideas what we might be in for, but it involves material from the ending of CS4. As for the three arcs and without spoilers for things you haven't seen yet, here are my guesses for what Falcom has in mind: Oh, speaking of that Dengeki reveal, a couple of fun factoids came out of it. I still need to read the full interview though so there might be other neat stuff there I haven't caught yet: - At least two new gameplay mechanics have been strongly implied: A new-model tactical orbment which at least some characters will use (actually, one that's been seen in CS3/4 but unavailable to the player previously) and cooperative S-Crafts, like the Combo Crafts from the Crossbell games except moreso. Which would be amazing. - They dropped hints about some characters who might become playable, any one of whom would be awesome. - While they didn't give mechanics, a good look at the screenshot for the minigame reveals that they're using more details from the Magical Alisa alternate continuity (as seen in Tokyo Xanadu and some side material) and incorporating it into the main setting. I have no idea how the minigame will integrate into the actual story but the idea of the characters' reaction to their fictionalized counterparts is too good to pass up, so I hope Falcom has some fun with that. For example, I can only imagine Laura's reaction to seeing her 'Princess Knight Laura' persona and wondering who thought it would make sense for her to fight in what looks like a wedding dress. xD -
How about Chaotic Awesome? As evidence: For bonus points, the word is morality-neutral since 'Awesome' in its original meaning described something that inspires wonder or terror. Either can work for Kelsier depending on what he's doing and who's describing it.

The bones could be used to create a Skeletal without the bones resisting too much but there would still be some hoops to jump through to make the two magics play together and let the Skeletal access the Dakhor monk's magic.
