  1. Given that Syl seems to have something of a dirty mind, I can only imagine that she would find ways to tease him mercilessly if he ever tried making her a Shardflute. Of course, Syl is going to mercilessly tease Kaladin about something no matter the circumstances but that in particular just seems to be asking for it. And now that we've established that the Fourth Ideal involves magical flutes, I think we can figure out the fifth and final Ideal of the Windrunners: Right-A-Down-Right-A-Down. xD
  2. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not. Mistborn details beneath the tag since this is a series-specific board
  3. Ahh, I see where the confusion came from, you posted three samples and thought that when I mentioned three letters I was referring to those samples individually. I should have been more clear there. Yeah, as Toastbringer says all three of those are part of the same letter, written by Harmony. It's the earlier two letters in the book (not part of your samples) that I was referring to when I said they were written by other Shards.
  4. Brandon has plans for other works set on Taldain that would take place after White Sand, though what format they would be in is apparently up in the air. This would presumably include Darkside's manifestation(s?) of Investiture, though it's made clear from the essay in Arcanum Unbounded that whatever is going on there is a lot more subtle than Dayside's Sand Mastery.
  5. Now that there's a spoiler tag on the title it's safe to drop the tags so this topic doesn't look like that one sample chapter of Dragonsteel Prime that Brandon shared where half a paragraph was a big mess of [REDACTED]. xD You've got the verbal tic right and that does mean exactly what you think, you're just remembering the order wrong. That's in the last of the letters. The first two of them begin by addressing the recipient as 'Cephandrius' which so far as we know is one of Hoid's identities that only the Shards and Frost know. Well, them and one more. Oh, and I missed your question about the audiobook reading earlier. Brandon has said that was intentional.
  6. Here's something Brandon has said on why Awakened objects 'imitate life'
  7. Based on what the Stormfather says, it's apparent that while each Order shares their Surges, they don't always use them in the same way. When looking at the Aharietiam vision and what the Stoneward does, the Stormfather tells Dalinar that while he too can use Cohesion it won't do the same things for him that it did for the Radiant he saw. Out of the books, Brandon has said that each Surge works slightly differently depending on the Order. This of course doesn't factor in the synergy you can get from combining two specific powers (not a technical term, just what you can do with one power plus another) or the Resonance which is unique to each Order. Various magic systems have elements that interact more with one realm or another. For example, some metals in feruchemy are more Cognitive (F-Zinc for example) or more Spiritual (F-Chromium or Duralumin) and Forgery is a system that touches on all three realms at once. There probably isn't such a thing as a 'Spiritual Coinshot' for example but there may well be other applications of magic that we haven't figured out yet. As for the Rosharan systems, I can't even imagine what 'Spiritual Gravitation' would look like, though I have to imagine that 'Spiritual Division' would be pretty storming terrifying if it's a real thing. But right now the only Surge that we know has different applications like this is Adhesion and only when a Bondsmith is using it.
  8. Obvious Oathbringer spoilers are obvious
  9. Under the circumstances, they seem to be mainly protecting their own people and lands from Alethi who have been attacking them, nothing deeper than that. It sounds like they were also looking after non-hostile Alethi refugees. The narrator of that interlude had attacked a Herdazian village (claiming he was trying to gather resources to continue fighting against the Voidbringers who had driven him out of Alethkar) and was caught. It's implied he and his men were raping villagers as well, hence the comments when the general offers the first option for punishment. Incidentally, the narrator is the same soldier whose actions led to Tien's death, so the sequence is a bit of delayed karma. Assuming you recognize the name; I had to have someone here point it out before I realized it. And yeah, the General seems like a fun character and I wouldn't mind seeing him again. The idea that he might he a proto-Radiant mainly comes down to the fact that he could be using Abrasion (or possibly Tension) to aid in his escapes, but it's certainly not necessary. After all, I'm pretty sure that Harry Houdini wasn't a Surgebinder and look at the stunts he pulled. xD
  10. Well, depending on the world it's always possible for them to use those abilities via system hacks. We know Taldain's a source of very easy Investiture, though it's currently inaccessible. Breath is a bit harder to get ahold of but once you do it's very easy to power other abilities with it, especially Surgebinding. And I imagine that if you could get there safely, the Dor could be used to infuse gemstones. In lieu of system hacks, I like the idea of keeping gems in aluminum when they're not being used to stop the Investiture from leaking. I'll just mention that Brandon has said this sort of thing might work (in the context of preventing hemalurgic decay) so we don't know if it would actually work in practice but it sure sounds good. Well, we know that 'minor shardworlds' can have Perpendicularities as well. Case in point: First of the Sun. Brandon has distinguished major from minor shardworlds by the current presence (in the Physical/Cognitive Realms) of a Shard and by how you interact with magic. All major shardworlds have Perpendicularities because there's a Shard present but not all Perpendicularities designate major shardworlds, if you follow. Anyhow, the Arcanum Unbounded essays make it clear that Khriss (as of the time the essays were written at least) has no means of visiting worlds that lack Perpendicularities, only observing them from the Cognitive Realm and that limits her knowledge. In discussing the Threnodite System she mentions that other planets' lack of any Perpendicularities has made it impossible to research the effects the clash between Ambition and Odium had on those planets. The worlds can still be studied but not to the same extent; She mentions that Drominad has three worlds with fully developed human societies, so even with limitations it's clear that one can learn a great deal about those worlds that don't have a Perpendicularity. But yeah, she currently is limited and I'll bet Jasnah would immediately become her best friend by virtue of her powers letting her create mini-Perpendicularities at will. Shai would be another great character to see learn to worldhop and I'd love to see her again. Maybe some kind of cross-Cosmere symposium could be arranged. Jasnah and Khriss, Shai and Shallan (just imagine the conversations those two could have), Wayne and absolutely anybody....
  11. Well, there's the fact that it occurs naturally in the Cosmere under the same circumstances that it does in real life. There's a reason that Scadrial got its aluminum from the ashmounts during the Final Empire and why Roshar doesn't have natural deposits of it. And remember that Scadrial didn't exist at the time of the Shattering. Brandon has said that atium isn't made any more now that Ati is dead so by extension it would be rather hard to imagine aluminum continuing to be produced after Adonalsium was Shattered, if you thought it was its godmetal. And then there's the fact that you can Soulcast things into aluminum but you explicitly can't create atium or lerasium via Soulcasting.

    Iron Feruchemy

You're limited to your body weight. Feruchemy stores things linked to you and your Identity. Your clothes aren't part of you, not even Wayne's hat no matter how much he might claim it's an inseparable part of him. And we know that you can't become truly weightless with F-Iron unless you strip naked, because your clothes and metalminds would still weigh you down, so by implication you can't store the weight of your clothes or it wouldn't be an issue in the first place.
  13. Yah, downvotes used to be a feature of the boards and the negative reputation ranks exist as a holdover from that time. The feature was recently removed so we will never again see Hoed, Lamespren or the dreaded Zucchini.
  14. Brandon has said that levitating an object is possible even though most people think it isn't.
  15. No worries, just wanted to call your attention to it in case you'd missed it. Relatedly, in his appearance he mentions that he 'owns the place' in describing the mansion grounds he's apparently trespassing on. According to Brandon this wasn't part of his drunken hobo disguise, he really does believe he owns the place and he's 'kinda right'. Brandon hasn't elaborated on why he believes this but I'm sure there's a good story there.
  16. There's also the little fact that he calls himself Hoid so... yes, we're positive it's him.
  17. Peter is the one who has all the numbers for converting between real-world and Cosmere measurements. He's said that a Rosharan foot has ten inches but he hasn't said how those compare to our inches. Unless someone has a more accurate WoB/WoP I haven't found, he'd be the person to ask.
  18. As mentioned, aluminum can be created via Soulcasting (and presumably by other methods) but once it exists it will resist any attempt to transform it via Investiture. It can also form naturally. Since it only becomes an Investiture Black Hole after it's formed, there's no paradox to its existence. Well, we know he designed the primary landmass of Roshar and the way Brandon himself created the continent is meant to highlight this special creation, which was not through natural buildup of crem. Whether you want to argue over whether there was already a planetary body there that Adonalsium tweaked, I think making a continent where there wasn't one is pretty impressive. And then as I was looking for the supporting WoBs I knew about, I found this gem: So yeah, Adonalsium is confirmed to have created entire star systems. Beyond that, we know that Preservation and Ruin acting together were able to create an entire planet and they're only one-eighth of Adonalsium's power so we've known since Mistborn Era 1 that ex nihilo creation is within Adonalsium's power. My current thinking is that Adonalsium didn't actually create the entire Cosmere but he/it definitely created parts of it directly and influenced the rest. Brandon has RAFO'd whether Adonalsium created the entire universe or even just the galaxy the Cosmere takes place in but he's also said that Roshar is not the only planet 'grown' by Adonalsium.
  19. Since the original post has apparently been righteously smote by a mod, I doubt any response is forthcoming. Since the topic is alive again, it seems relevant to share the essay that Brandon included in Altered Perceptions, which wasn't available in an easily-linkable form when this topic was started. He discusses his own experience (at one remove) with the subject of depression and how it's one of the two biggest things that shaped the Kaladin we know compared to the character in TWoK Prime. It's short but a very good read.
  20. Welcome to the Shard! Becasue of what's happened on Sel, anything at all involving the Dor (and anything touching on it, like the local religions) involves both Shards. Here's something Peter had to say on the subject: So yeah, the Domi/Dominion thing is just a coincidence. It's got a little to do with that Shard because the Dor involves both but it's mostly Devotion. And Jaddeth is more associated with Dominion but it's not an exclusive thing there either. Brandon has also associated Wyrn with Dominion. Wyrn may not actually know what's really powering his future-sight and any other abilities he has, but he's definitely more connected to Dominion. We also know that the Skaze are affiliated with Wyrn in some way and they're splinters of Dominion, in the same way that the Seons are splinters of Devotion.
  21. Since Wyndle remembers that Radiants of old sometimes did have their spren become bows but had to carry string and arrows separately and there's no mechanism by which most Radiants could create a 'Stormlight arrow' (unless you count Soulcasting an arrow from air) I think we can say 'probably not'. Similarly, Shardguns are tricky because, well, moving parts. You pretty much can't make that work with a spren. Now a fabrial 'gun' making use of one or more Surges, that you could definitely do interesting things with.
  22. You'd need some way to externalize the effect of F-Aluminum; Feruchemy naturally only works on the user's attributes, including Identity. Maybe a godmetal alloy, though we have Word of Peter that we shouldn't expect those to follow any specific pattern (IE we can't assume that because A-Malatium externalized the effect of A-Gold it would do the same thing for other allomantic powers or for feruchemy generally) and Brandon's said he hasn't canonized most of the effects even in his notes. Of course, the easiest way to defeat Forgery is to just remove the stamp...
  23. My guess is that adulterating pewter sufficiently to have no allomantic effect would either be economically impractical or dangerous for the use it's meant for (ie, plates and forks and such) but someone who knows more about metallurgy should probably weigh in there. Another thought that occurs to me is that trying to legislate something like this tells everyone who works with pewter (and not just the people who supply metalborn with their metals) something about the alloy and its ratios. The skaa aren't really supposed to know anything about allomancy, so trying to enforce a seemingly arbitrary rule about alloy composition across the entire Final Empire would tell anyone paying attention that there's something important about pewter. Maybe that's enough and the potential spread of knowledge was seen as more dangerous than a small number of illegal metalborn being able to get trace amounts of pewter through their diningware. EDIT: Or @The One Who Connects could have it, since 'legitimate' metalborn benefit from pewterware being usable in a pinch as well.
  24. @Wyndlerunner I didn't know that but you made me want to look it up and was enlightened: My knowledge of Korean is pretty much nonexistant so I'm not sure of the words the transcriber couldn't make out either. I think the first is budae jjigae and the second is haemul jeongol but someone who can actually speak Korean should probably check me on that. In any case, I know what to start looking for on the menu the next time I'm at a Korean restaurant with friends.
  25. I wonder if Preservation and Ruin might have slightly more influence over their magic systems than other Shards do, considering that they created Scadrial and all life on it from the ground up. It probably wouldn't make a difference after the world was created but in the process of creation itself, they might have been able to exert some influence on how their magic would eventually arise.
