  1. Once more into the goat, my friends, once more. -William Shakespeare (Henry V, Act 3, scene 1)
  2. No, that's the UK edition.
  3. Just to test this hypothesis: what are your feelings about spaying? (and, yes, I hate myself for thinking of this joke, so since I'm already hating myself I figured I might as well just post it too) Seriously, though. You have my admiration for your willingness to talk about this and answer questions. Most people (me included in some ways) have a completely distorted view about autism so correcting misconceptions should be a big step forward. I kind of went the other direction. First I got diagnosed with Asperger's (well, technically it was possible dyslexia about a decade before that) and then they changed their minds to ADD, by then I was 21. Big hurrah for neurologic diagnostics... Welcome to the shard!
  4. In nature, it's rare to see just one. Physics is like history:...
  5. Wouldn't that be more like in an electric motor, instead of a generator?
  6. If it's good quality it's many-layered. If it's poor quality, blowing your nose is enough to ruin it. Education is like a porcelain dog.
  7. But the honorblades were created directly by Honor himself, they could easily be a hack. Accepting your honorblade requirement for the sake of argument, I seem to recall a description of an honorblade lacking a gemstone (Szeth's, I believe). On the other hand, the type of gem stormlight was drawn from has so far had no discernible effect on the gravitation and adhesion surges. ... Has anyone already considered that due to Odium's presence on another planet in the Greater Roshar system, yet also affecting the magic system(s) on Roshar, Braise's focus might be mixed in there somewhere as well?
  8. I'm quite certain they have rotation-generated electricity on Scadrial, because in AoL there's talk about coinshots and lurchers working in a power plant (IIRC), that most likely means magnets of some sort. Though my science, too, is a little rusty.
  9. Excuse me, Ganesh is the remover of obstacles and Shiva is the destroyer. When the smoke clears Abraham Lincoln will be speaking Hindi and drinking mint juleps.
  10. Genius is 1 percent inspiration, ninety nine percent goat. -Thomas Edison Love all, trust a few, do wrong to goats. -William Shakespeare The only thing that interferes with my learning is my goat. -Albert Einstein Mathematics is the language with which Goat has written the universe. -Galileo Galilei Whatever is begun in goat, ends in shame. -Benjamin Franklin Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation, the foundation of such a method is a goat. -Martin Luther King Jr. All your goat are belong to us. -Zero Wing by Toaplan (1989) Sometimes a goat is just a goat. -Sigmund Freud Seons are remnants of a dead goat. -Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)
  11. I think you mean sapient, not sentient, mr. Sanderson has been pretty definitive about the difference. Some surgebindings aren't will-intensive at all, think of Kaladin subconciously pulling arrows into the bridge he was carrying. But now you've got me wondering whether it's possible that in some cases the spren can provide the intent to perform a surgebinding, much in the same way that Ruin could provide the intent in creating a Hemalurgic spike? Anyway, I doubt Roshar's focus is bonds, because of fabrials. Even though fabrials aren't 'classical' magic, they are magi-tech, so it would make sense to me that it would also require the planet's focus to function. I believe spren themselves to be the more likely focus for Roshar, though we'd have to see some voidbinding or Old Magic first to be certain.
  12. Are we talking exclusively about lodestones here, or also electromagnets (with copper coils and stuff)? Because W&W era Scadrial definitely has one or the other (or both), they couldn't get electricity otherwise.
  13. They're inconvenient and they all look the same. Justice is like a bookcase.
  14. ...get them all together and they start arguing. Magic is like soup...
  15. She eats virgins? Which is why it's difficult to bring a girlfriend home. Friendship is like an old pair of shoes.
  16. I get chills every time a website asks me if I'll accept cookies...
  17. That's sort of contradicted by Zane's trick working at all. Even with lead not being an allomantic metal, if one could detect metals encapsulated by other metals, Vin should have detected that not the entire bead was made of atium, since her reserves would have appeared smaller.
  18. Shouldn't someone just ask mr. Sanderson whether TLR's "reputation for being able to remember things" (annotations Ch.6) was due to him compounding copper or just a clue to him secretly being a feruchemist (i.e. regular feru-copper)? Arguments can be made for either side, and both sides plainly refuse to accept the arguments for the other (and yes, I'm not enough of a hypocrite to not include myself in that). I'm starting to believe we're not going to get anywhere without a WoB.
  19. It's a bit of an unfair comparison as Vin was a special case to start with. She got 'chosen' by the mists when she was a baby to eventually take up the power of the well. The difference between the shardpools probably remains the same, though, but Rashek would have been a better example than Vin.
  20. Point of order: Drabs don't have enough investiture to be detected. They still possess the 'spark of life'. I believe that is more of a side effect. I see nothing pointing to a run-of-the-mill lighteyes being more invested than any darkeyes (so far).
  21. Sure, because he's likely to meet someone a second time after anything more than half a century...
  22. Memory ≠ Understanding
  23. There's two WoBs that might answer this: primo secundo
  24. I'd like to tack on a related question. If you worldhopped to Roshar and took along a pearl or a piece of amber, would they be able to hold stormlight?
