  2. Okay, I fubar-ed on the whole biomass thing, but I maintain my position on Kandra: however little or much biomass they have, they are always perfectly healthy.
  3. How would healing work at all? Since the only way we know of to actually harm a Kandra is by using acid, I don't imagine it will come up much in the first place, but the possibility does exist, so... The problem is that acid harms by consuming body-mass, which logically speaking can't be recovered through simply healing, for a Kandra to recover from an acid attack, getting back to normal consists of recovering the lost mass, which can be achieved by eating. We do have the possible counterexample of Lopen starting to regrow his arm, but from all appearances this is going to be a very slow process, so it's easy to explain the added mass of his restored arm as coming from food intake, so the healing is more an allocation of mass than creation of it. I suggest that the blockage mistwraiths and Kandra have with their cognitive aspect also removes the filter used in Investitural healing, meaning that they are constantly at the ideal level of health outlined by the spiritual aspect, even when they're being dissolved in acid, the portion of them that remains is perfectly healthy.

  10. Nope, sorry, the Returned are named by the priesthood. Apart from their epiteths (the bold etc.) which are probably based on the way the host died, I get the feeling it's pretty arbitrary.

They would still have live shardblades, wouldn't they? *this is based on stuff I only half remember from this forum, so please don't shoot me if I got it wrong and it turns out that was just speculation.
  12. Since I'm writing fantasy (as I assume most of you are) I find that Bob, Mary and Steve don't really work for me. But there's a lot of free fantasy name generators out there for those who need them. What I really like about those is that the names are often separated by culture (or race if applicable) which allows me to keep consistency in groups of people (naming two brothers Jared and Talmud'ji'gilnom is to be avoided IMO). Here's two generators I use, for those who are interested. Try lord_1 or hunter_A as placeholder names, it might get confusing if you start adding lord_2 and so on, but at least the replace function won't destroy your story. As to how I create my characters, I start from their role in the story. Let's say I need a lawyer. I'll decide some key features - for instance, the lawyer's a sixty-something woman - and some broad traits to base the personality on - like, she's stubborn and irritable - then I start writing the story and hope the rest of the character grows out of that. I also decide on a name before I start writing, usually with a generator since up to now I haven't needed names with specific meanings.

  15. Since all inquisitors have allo-vision - which I imagine is like looking at people as if they're in an MRI - they can probably be pretty accurate hitting something involved with blood circulation.
  16. Sorry, but that isn't clarifying, that's repeating the source of the confusion. Does that mean that of two equally sized metal beads, the denser (and therefore heavier) one will burn longer? Or that of two pieces of metal of equal weight, the denser (and therefore smaller) one will burn longer?
  17. When you read the previous post, want to suggest writing a haiku instead and then get irritated because you realize that's impossible because haiku have an odd number of syllables in each line. "Ena Ashe Ra- oh bugger."
  18. It depends on whether the metal parts need to be completely shielded by aluminium or only on the outside. If you plate the entire outside of a steel pistol with aluminium and then it turns out lurchers and coinshots can still affect it by the inside of the barrel, you've gone to a whole lot of effort for nothing. Simply coating the inside of the barrel as well will give the same problems as a fully aluminium gun with the added downside (as mentioned by Voidus) that the coating would be worn away pretty soon, leaving you with a pushable gun once more.
  19. Inscribing Aon Ashe on a flashlight (a torch for those of you in the UK) when the batteries run out. Using soulstamps when your glasses get scratched (or your wristwatch, car, etc.). Though what I think I'd like most of all is a bronzemind. I live on the top floor of an apartment building, right underneath a flat roof, last summer I consistently had temperatures of over 30° C inside (86° F). I'd use the heat I stored over the summer during midwinter to go to work in shorts and a T-shirt and freak people out.
  20. I really have to mention Terry Pratchett's The Last Continent here. If you've read it, you probably know what I'm talking about, if not, I strongly suggest you start reading ASAP. It's a very nicely written story.
  21. ... or Roshar Years or Sel years, but unless and until Brandon gives us year lengths I'll be using earth years (except for Roshar, where 1 year = 1,1 Earth years). It might result in some revisions on my part when we do receive this information, but unless the year lengths diverge vastly between planets, most theories based on a single calendar should remain viable.
  22. Isn't it obvious? Feruchemical bendalloy is the only power that offers the possibility of bypassing the digestion system. Evacuating one's bowels is not really possible with a spike shoved in there.
  23. I believe it is the latter. My personal theory is that she chose that moment (600 years before the events of Warbreaker) to start Returning people because something big had happened (or was going to happen) elsewhere in the Cosmere. I'm not absolutely sure about the relative timelines but I believe that Warbreaker happens at roughly the same time as Stormlight Archive (give or take a decade) which happens roughly at the same time as Wax&Wayne. Given that Nightblood was created during the Manywar, 300 years before Warbreaker that coincides with the ascension of Harmony (IMO the single most important Cosmere event since the shattering of Adonalsium). The combination of two shard upsets the power balance in the Cosmere, so it's likely the triggering event for the overarching conflict covering all shardworlds (probably with Odium, but who knows, he might just be a red herring). A bit rambling there, but the actual theory is that Endowment chose that moment to start Returning people since she knew that big stuff would be happening and she foresaw the existence of the Returned would lead to the creation of Nightblood, which she believed would be necessary (I mean, Brandon wrote an entire book basically just to introduce Nighblood before he appeared on Roshar, so we can be pretty sure he's going to be important, right?).
  24. That depends on what kind of spike it is. As far as I know, the only spike that uses a rectal bindpoint is one granting feruchemical bendalloy.
