It makes a certain amount of sense, I like it.

pretty sure inquisitor santa is the coolest santa ever and a picture of him should make its way onto the site somewhere, also... commenting and all that.

I have a question, more out of interest than out of wanting to play, a guy I used to know played magic with what he called a 'mill deck' and I seem to remember him mentioning blue-black, I played a couple of games but never really had a huge idea what was going on or using that deck but anyway, what is a blue black mill deck and why would you use it?

An idea I've seen thrown around in other threads that I think deserves a mention and some discussion here is the idea of a spiritual focus. The focus is the state of their soul and the actions that have grown out of that allowing the powers to always be there active and under the surface die to their actions and then they can just throw bindings around, or whatever it is that their power lets them do. Chaos has talked about the focus in terms of the person choosing what power and how to apply it case by case like the metals for an allomancer, that wouldnt work for the spiritual focus idea, at least as far as I've seen it suggested, which is why I put that their power would be always active as long as they were maintaining the spiritual conditions that gained them the power in the first place, sort of like always burning steel but not pushing on anything until you needed to.

Just a crazy thought I had, what if Nahel spren arent any different to normal spren, we know Kalladin spent a long time thinking Syl was an ordinary windspren, what if Spren are all of honour like breath is of Endowment (in at least the vaguest sense) and different kinds of spren are all capable of being bonded/bonding and through that bond growing into a Nahal spren. ie after all syl still seems a lot like a windspren and when syl first started binding things together as pranks for Kalladin all they way back in Amarams army he wasnt surprised, he didnt think it was unusual so normal windspren must have some of the powers syl has, that could even be where the names of different orders of radiants came from, windrunners, had windspren and rode the high storms with them etc Im not sure how that could apply to other orders of knights and kinds of spren but its an idea.

Something a few people have commented on, storms dont form walls... they totally do in Australia at least. I've seen them form, and come through the town I used to live in, a front you could use as a ruler and clearly defined edges, could destroy a 2 block wide strip of the town and barely touch anything else. However they were almost always followed by a more general rain storm. So that made me think about the highstorms being followed by progressively weaker storms, what if those storms are the same as the rain storms that used to follow those storms. If thats the case we're seriously under-estimating the strength of the highstorms. When Kalladin is in the highstorm he thinks about all the debree that will come with the storm front, that sounds to me more like a flood wave than any kind of storm... its not a crazy flat fronted hurricane its such a powerful wave of wind that it not just rips trees up (like strong storms we're familiar with them) it drags them along with it and throws them into things like a flood coming down a river. However, my theory on the highstorm(s) is that they are essentially natural but are a response to a supernatural phenomenon, the rain from them seems very cultivation, the stormlight implies honour since it powers his magic, but its them acting and the storms form in response to their actions.

I think another thing to consider about Dalinars revulsion at fighting, he was never revolted by the fighting perse, he was revolted by the pointlessness of the fighting and the dishonourable nature of it. (I think...) After all when it comes down to the wire at the end he enjoys the fight, because he is fighting for the right reason, to protect his men and lead them to safety, its an honourable battle and he is content to fight, satisfied even knowing that he is doing the right thing.

Awakening Can Make Returned...Sort Of
dj26792 replied to Silus - Shard of Flame's topic in Warbreaker
Having a child can't involve the death of the returned the God-kings have had children and then passed the collection of breaths on to said child, if the Returned had to give up their breath to have a child they wouldnt be able to do that. Also I think the Returned breath does affect the returned body in some way, otherwise it wouldnt be genetic and the royal line wouldnt be any different from any other line, but there must be some relation to the spiritual or cognitive aspect as well that got passed on... so Im really not sure whats going on there. -
We know its possible to change memories because Vasher tells Denth he can make him forget things. It obviously isnt bravado because Denth is also one of the 5 scholars, he might not be as good as Vasher but he would know if something like that was or wasn't possible. He admits as much during the conversation. Chapter 57

But there is a difference between your native language and languages you learn later, the way the brain learns and understands them is different and even when you forget that language there are problems in Australia with Lebanese immigrants who had grown up speaking Lebanese at home learnt English in primary school and forgotten Lebanese and they really struggle to learn languages in High School, I'm sure the problem is represented in other nationalities as well, thats just the one I know because my Mum taught in a school that had a lot of Lebanese immigrants. For whatever reason there is a difference in the languages perhaps if someone was brought up bilingual they would be able to awaken in either language because both would have that connection. I'm not really sure if I actually had anything to say any more, so this was just an information dump now. EDIT: grammer and spelling

I like the idea hoser threw up about him already having the spren, mistborns objection of the revulsion is simply explained, Kalladin comments at the time that he is fighting to protect he doesnt enjoy the fighting but it is neccesary in order to protect, one of the ideals of his order. Dalinar was revolted because he was just fighting, he wasnt acting in accord with his ideals it wasn't honourable, and his spren which was still developing and he hasn't yet realised he has it or that he is a knight radiant but still being affected by the dishonourable nature of the fighting.

I always assumed the dawnshards and the honourblades were the same things with the name Dawnshards being forgotten over time (There's a quote somewhere that implies the term isn't something modern scholars study, but older ones did) and the honourblades being invented to give the weapons of the heralds a name. In another thread I read discussion on the number of shardblades and suits of shardplate in the world and the number left by the radients. There are easily a thousand missing sets... hoser referred to the quote about returning the shards, that could easily be referring to this massive cache of weapons that would make a huge difference in a war, and could potentially convince Odium to name a champion and have it out in a duel rather than a war, its certainly an idea worth considering

I was going to reply with what I thought the sizes would be but then I realised none of you are familiar with Australian currency, I'll look for a picture which will give you an idea of the sizes but I'm imagining the size of a 5c coin a little bit bigger than a 10c coin and the size of a 50c coin. EDIT: the picture a 5c coin is about a cm across... just under and half an inch for the metrically challenged.

This all sort of makes sense, but what is your explanation for the sheer volume of spren (assuming 4a)? Seons (and presumably Skaze) are relatively rare, not unheard of obviously several nobles have them in Elantris but even more dont, even among the rich and powerful. Spren are everywhere. Literally everywhere, floating around on the wind, sitting in goblets... if they're splinters of honour he must have been huge to start off with, at least compared to Aona. I think the sheer volume of spren forces us to believe they are some kind of natural created being, primarily spiritual for sure, but not splinters. However I dont think that neccesarily means that seons/skaze aren't, when compared to the average spren they are far more advanced and powerful entities, I like the idea of Aona and Skai splintering themselves to avoid Odium seizing their power, that makes a lot more sense to me than him splintering them for any reason as both intents fit well with his own, devoted hatred and dominion over those he hates would empower him a lot. Unless for some reason he couldnt take them which I've seen suggested somewhere, but that makes no sense when Sazed already has two shards that are more opposed than devotion and hatred.

what if one of them (cadmium or bendalloy) is age/longevity Im not sure if it could make you younger or just make you able to live longer but that sort of relates to both the feruchemical and allomantic powers of those metals. I'm not sure what the other one would steal though maybe healing ability? the inquisitors healed faster and we know they largely didnt have feruchemy, its possible they had Gold feruchemy but they could also have just healed quicker which would explain why they needed to sleep more, their bodies couldnt generate enough energy to fuel their enhanced healing abilities, after all if it was feruchemy they could have chosen not to sleep and not healed super fast.

Theory: Honor's Shard Shattered Like Adonalsium
dj26792 replied to FeatherWriter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If thats true the blades/heralds can't be the original splinters because they still existed at the same time as the bondable spren and couldnt have shattered and even aside from that there would only be 9 types because one of the heralds stayed true. Its an interesting theory though, on the whole I like it, but someone needs to come up with an alternative for where/what the original 10 splinters were. -
see it seems more to me like they have tactical innovation because war is a masculine art, but because the engineering aspect is a feminine art i think they would largely overlook it, field defences, like that would involve war, a masculine art and but require the knowledge of an engineer, a feminine art, its quite possible their societal blindspot has prevented innovation in that area, we know they all have slightly different bridge tactics, and army components its not they don't innovate, they just don't mix feminine arts and war, because according to their religion War is the premier masculine art, to bring a woman in would be sacrilege.

Theory: Hemalurgy can transfer any Investiture
dj26792 replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
we know there are 16 metals and the God metals, because we've been told, and also because 16 is a significant number in the cosmere, the only way I can see this theory working, would be through the use of Atium, but being able to do it with Atium is very plausible considering we've been told it can steal any allomantic or feruchemical investiture depending on how its used, I'm sure if hemalurgy can steal other investitures it would be through atium -
Surgebinding and Shardwielding can return [spoilers]
dj26792 replied to Chicken's topic in Stormlight Archive
I'm going to argue that the old magic is completely cultivation, a gift and a curse, a gift to help you and a curse as pruning for personal growth, but taking it even further all the examples we have of 'good people' going for non selfish reasons we see them getting a gift that is really helpful and exactly what they need, while getting a relatively minor curse that in some cases is almost a blessing in itself, such as Dalinar losing his memories of his wife and being able to move on. While the stereotype I picked up from the book was that the curses are normally pretty terrible, because the people are normally asking for shallow selfish things and so they need a harsher curse requiring either more growth to deal with, or making them less a part of society, thus pruning away the weeds in society as a whole. That is exactly what I would expect of a shard named cultivation, it makes it pretty and healthy personally and as part of the whole, or it kills it so the whole gets better. -
No, I'm pretty sure we've been told they aren't, I thought the letter said something about that but it doesn't refer to the strength of the shards just how frightening they can be, so I could be wrong, but I say No with confidence anyway.

but surely there are also power modifiers that could be used to amplify it, still might not be as powerful as Elantris, but we know they have power mods for other Aons, why not Rao, in which case they could have a significant amount of power at their disposal.

But he is taking a lot of control over the camp, as the High Prince of War and everyone there being in the war, politics will be a lot less significant, he'll still have to play a bit, but its unlikely that it will be a major concern for him, people will be hating him or loving him because of what he's doing and regardless of how he acts towards the 'late arrival' that will be true, and I think he is smart enough to realise that and do whats right, thats sort of the whole point of his honour system, the right thing is more important than the easy thing, or the politically correct thing. I expect he will do the right thing and people will try and cause trouble for him about it and that will be (one of) the sources of conflict in the book
-
But even with post shattering we dont know how long it was before the time of Elantris. I think the logical starting point is to say the earliest exact date from Elantris is 0 and everything dates from there and then modify it if/when we get a time frame for the shattering.

certain users of Tumblr can write pretentious reviews of works of arts and magically influence the world at larges views on the artwork, the more powerful mages can, with experience, affect peoples perceptions of future works as well, resulting in people feeling that certain artists suddenly lost all talent, it can be used to make people like artworks, but of course its on the internet, and as such this has never happened. Simon Baker from the Mentalist would make a pretty awesome Breeze, his appearance might not be quite right, but thats easily fixed and his character in the mentalist is pretty much just breeze but cop. Although, if he could pull off the vengeful aspect he also looks a lot like Kelsier and could pull off the rest of the character as well, and RDJ would also make an awesome Breeze if he was willing to be a side character in the first movie...
