  1. Or cyclone Tracy in Darwin, it levelled a state capital in Australia. However I still maintain that highstorms are a conventional front rather than cyclonic/hurriconic (is that even a word.... It might be now)
  2. The plate blocks their lashings presumably it also prevents them from stealing the stormlight at least until the plate gets damaged and starts leaking
  3. He needs a ship that can survive the highstorms because he doesnt know whats out there but a storm as powerful as the highstorms would gather power very quickly over a large body of water/the ocean.
  4. I think part of the reason the greatshells get as large as they do is that they feed on stormlight actually, they don't need to get more oxygen because they take energy directly through magic. what that says for oxygen content I don't know but I suspect, lower gravity would have a bigger impact on size of animals than oxygen content anyway. Also they have horses everywhere, they just have to be placed in shelters to survive the highstorms.
  5. Ivoryroad, where is this write-up I'd like to read it. Also Kelsier doesnt need the newer metals, in terms of raw combat power the only one thats adds anything to the mistborn is duraluminium and thats not much of an advantage against these fighters. Kelsiers experience wins out of Elends knowledge of the new metals and greater power for sure, Vin would be an interesting comparison I think she would do well in general better, but coming up against Wayne in this mix, Kelsiers greater skill at pushing and pulling on metals again wins out.
  6. I might have to wait till the end of my semester, if I start around November I should still finish in plenty of time.
  7. I think its probably also a reasonable assumption that they all use oaths/spiritual condition to access power, for the rest I need to think about it a little longer.
  8. I think I said this awhile ago but I was watching the mentalist and I couldnt help myself Simon Bakers character in that show is Breeze, pretty much exactly. He is smarter than more influental than and appears generally better than everyone around him despite having no real authority everyone just does what he wants when he wants, he is Breeze, although in some episodes he displays a sort of dark brooding that would fit kelsier if he could pull off the action hero image. However I think Mat Damon could do a good Kelsier as well intelligent leader forceful can do witty sometimes...
  9. I both disagree with Kenshu and yet agree with the point he is making. Honour as a concept is almost universal societies that have a honour concept all say that honour is the same thing they just have other influences on their behaviour. Honour is about obedience to the highest authority and then your more immediate superiors it is about justice and trustworthiness and many other things the reason a samurai would commit suicide is that their society said honour is more important than life, for a catholic honour is second to Gods law which states that according to their interpretation suicide is self murder and thus a mortal sin. On Roshar honour is everything, more important than life, but Szeth has sworn he he will not suicide he will obey etc, I think its just a rock, thats part of his punishment all he has to do is give up his honour and he can be free, but honour is life. Thats my interpretation anyway.
  10. I suspect that there are ten but very few people are at the lowest extreme it makes some sense that over the years most families have done at least one thing worth being raised, the only people who would realistically be the lowest rank would be freed slaves, no matter how low your rank is your happier with someone below you, and since most slaves who get freed do it in war they would become soldiers and probably raise their rank a bit quite quickly so that someone would be lower than them
  11. When I try and go to the coppermind the front page shows up as 'Index of /' and a list of links to things that I'm assure are important but shouldn't be out in the open for everyone to see. If I click on one of them, or find a page from the coppermind by other means (google, typing in the URL, following links from elsewhere) I get an unidentified internal server error that adds that when they tried to get an error document to tell me that they encountered a 500 internal server error. Is this a general problem, are the important people aware of it? Is there a better way for me to be passing on this knowledge?
  12. Having thought about it more since yesterday, I honestly think full haze killer Wax, assuming all know the general powers and equipment of everyone else would win. Simply because none of the others would be able to fully comprehend the powers of a gun, until they came up against it. Arena style, I think that Kelsier and Szeth would both go on the front foot early, and try to pounce on Dalinar or Wax, expecting the other to do the same and hoping to thin the field early. That gives us 4 scenarios, they both go for Wax/Dalinar or they split and Kelsier attacks Wax/Dalinar and Szeth the other. I can't see any of these scenarios ending in anyway other than someone who attacks Wax thinking 'WOW, thats what they meant when they said bullets are fast' as they die from multiple gunshot wounds. If its only one attacking Wax he now gets a free shot at whoever is about to win out of the other two and probably wins against his final weakened opponent. If both attacked the other is having similar thoughts while trying to work out how to counter this and gets caught between Dalinar, who would be quick to capitalise on that situation and Wax and dies, and I suspect so does Wax as Dalinar is in close enough to land a blow as well, if he manages to get away however he would win against Dalinar for all the reasons mentioned by so many others before me. The other situation where none attack him lets him gun down Kalladin first as his range is a threat, I suspect Hazekiller rounds would get him even with atium if Wax is smart about it, then Szeth goes down to bullets or distraction and Dalinar who is beginning to realise he needs to fear bullets tries to close and fails as Wax escapes to the air and rains down bullets. And on the note of Atium, this is the only scenario I can think of in which Kelsier dies, Wax knows its coming and plans for it, even then while it looks nice up there, I put getting Kelsier face to face at 50-50. If he gets a chance at Kelsier from behind 60-40, the rest of it though, I put Wax at a 70-30 by no means certain, but probable.
  13. Im not sure its that simple. I volunteer at childrens camps every year at the last one I did I had a camper who for health reasons couldnt participate in many activities, I felt really guilty about that I've seen it in other leaders ad well and in parents people feel guilty aboht all sorts of things Dalinars guilt could be just as much helplessness as guilt over that sort of curse. Also there is a strong theme in the curses and booms we know of that selfish boons are twisted and get big curses on the parties involved and selfless requests get minimal curses and clever assistance that gives them what they need better than what they asked for. I cant see Renarins health being directly impacted negatively by Dalinars visit to the old magic. I could be wrong but I think a request for the strength to carry out Gavilars wish for the good of the people with the beginning of his desire for honour being flared as a boon and his amnesia as a clever curse that actually helped as a curse makes the most sense.
  14. Thats an interesting thought but the high storms are just so cultivating I cant see them as being of any other shard. Part of cultivating is killing the weak and putting the strong through adversity in order to strengthen them. The high storms do that beautifully and then provide crem to help those strong enough to survive to grow stronger and survive easier next time
  15. I always thought that it was a normal sheath and blocked him from acting because it was a sheath, a sheathed sword is not an active sword. So when sheathed he takes a more passive approach to his job.
  16. What if the Shaod doesn't do anything about the ability to draw Aons, it just grants power. After all, elantris is made in the form of Aon Rao, it quite literally screams 'POWER!!!' if everyone on the planet, or even just the original elantrians who lived in proximity to the shard pool of aona had the connection to her neccesary to draw aons but couldn't draw enough power through that link to do much, they could have built Elantris to drag through more power, and every other effect of the Shaod could just be a side effect of so much power being channelled through their bodies.
  17. Would it have to be subtle or would it just have to be things they didn't know were there, if one of the locations was a gold mine, or any other sort of mine and the others were unfound deposits he would have no reason to connect the locations with the dots, and in their society its quite possible they didn't know how to find the deposits of whatever source of wealth was there, I've lived in a mining town where almost 100 mines sprang up at once around 1880, and then less than 10 years ago they found a massive new deposit that they never knew about less than 30km from all of these massive mines, finding ore deposits with their technology would be as much luck as anything. That said I really think that any mine would be worth a fortune to them, so it wouldn't necessarily be gold, but it does make a lot of sense for the dots to correspond to sources of wealth of some description. The real question I think is what would the impact on the aon be if those unidentified sources of wealth were used up, eg: the gold all mined...?
  18. I think, and have heard (read?) others suggest that that is because the shards make people become a light eyes and they passed that trait onto their descendants, so originally they were led by the Radiants and their children, who were the most intelligent and enlightened people, but as time went on the ranks of lighteyes became what they are in the book. But I agree with Aethlings point about rank, just because Rank is hereditary doesnt mean that children will always have the same rank as their parents, they could be started several ranks lower and expected to work their way up for themselves while they wait to take up the mantle of their House for example or some system like that, and Kalladin as a darkeyes having his fathers rank doesnt make that any more or less unlikely as it is quite common historically and even today for social systems amongst nobility/extreme upper class to work differently to those of the majority of people.
  19. Their society has consistently been hard to place as their cultural development has happened faster than ours but their metallurgy has improved even faster again. So I think that we'll see a 50s (ish) and modern technology in some kind of terrible but somehow brilliant mash up
  20. I think in general combat it could go anyway but in answer to szeths close combat superiority over kelsier, atium pewter duralumin. the speed and power to insta kill faster than szeth can react and the foreknowledge of where szeth will be. It would be dangerous but kelsier has shown that he will do anything to win. That said in that moment of vulnerability afterwards if wax is still alive kelsier gets shot in the head and wax goes on to win due to superior range and mobility over dalinar. that said it really could go anyway depending on which incredibly lucky character was luckier on the day.
  21. I'm going to have to vote for massed crossbows and half shard shields as the best shard counter and half shard walls and tower shields as a szeth counter. If you have a 100 crossbows trained to fire in say 4m square spread pattern you are going to inflict significant damage to almost all the pieces of plate, if you then follow that up with more volleys or even a cavalry charge, eventually the shard bearer will take critical damage, in an army formation heavy infantry with a half shard tower shield could just swarm them and pin them up against their own lines then use halberds or similar to smash them from behind the lines. szeth defence is easier, you just build your inner sanctum out of half shard walls, and then using custom shields that fill the corridors and large numbers of men pin him against a wall and go to town on him with what ever is handy.
  22. I've read a few very different theories on shardblades on the boards, and I'd like to propose one myself. (possibly a second theory... that seems like something I would do) Their religion, Vorinism, talks about getting kicked out of heaven by the bad guys and all life being building towards the retaking of heaven, lets assume that is in someway vaguely valid, there was a fight in the spiritual realm that they lost. My theory is that Shardblades are spiritual weapons, created by Honour, to use in battle against Odium in the spiritual realm, the reason they affect souls, is because they are primarily a spiritual weapon, their immense ability to cut dead objects is because the object lacking a separate soul is just a side effect (I'm struggling for a more coherent explanation, so its a side effect for now.) A theory I saw proposed in another thread said they had bits of Odium in them and thats what causes the Thrill, I think its more likely something like the opposite, the thrill, was intentional, but has become slightly peverted, any sane person, even a great warrior with super weapons and armour would be almost incapacitated by fear in a battle with the voidbringers whose spiritual aspects are presumably even more terrifying, so to counter that the shardblades were imbued with an incredible battle lust/joy to counter that fear, I note in passing that when Dalinar is having his crisis over the thrill in battle he is initially revolted by it but it he eventually feels a similar Joy as he continues to fight having resolved his issues on why he fights, I think thats what the thrill is meant to be and the dishonour of the blades has somehow corrupted that since the radiants in a similar fashion to the missing powers of the armour. What I lack a fully coherent explanation for is the reason for Syl hating the blades and not the plate, but this theory works without knowing that, sort of.
  23. I don't have a fancy name for it but when I lived in in Broken Hill out in central Australia we used to get storms like that, but not wide and they are exactly what I imagine the high storm to be except affecting a larger area. One year we had two close together, and the first one, hit 3 blocks wide, literally outside that there was barely even rain, inside that houses had roofs ripped off and thrown around like toys, the second was even stronger but only hit one block wide, and it hit a poorer section of the town and just about levelled a strip one block wide, we barely noticed it ten minutes drive away. They just roll in off the hot desert probably similar to the one mentioned at the start by Vikter, not circular, which is why I think that the highstorm is more like a desert storm than a cyclone/hurricane, it comes like a wave over the whole continent, rather than spirals through, for it to be a hurricane it would have to be huge for them not to notice something like that.
  24. Even aside from the temporal realm the same physical changes result in different emotions based on context and Breeze and Allrianne both have far more control than that would allow. Its an interesting idea but my understanding of psychology would suggest it doesnt work.
  25. On the side topic of Nicrosilminds I assumed that storing investure and tapping it would make you a weaker or stronger allomancer, ie Kelsier was weaker than Vin who was weaker than Elend, but if Vin had stored investiture for a while she would have been equal to Kelsier, and then she could have tapped it to be as strong as Elend. In regards to the main theory, I like it and I think that I have a reasonable reason for Hoid to have acted as he did on Nalthis, he was making sure war didn't break out weakening troops he would need to be ready to fight Odium if he ever attacked Nalthis, he was probably also talking to Endowment, whether to maintain or establish an alliance.
