  1. Well, I mean, that is what happened. How much effort Renarin actually put forth towards perpetuating this story and actively framing Dalinar can be questioned, but the fact remains that Renarin knew he was having the visions, and I'm sure he knew that Dalinar was suspecting himself, and he hid behind that lie. If I had to guess, he probably didn't intentionally frame Dalinar the first time it happened. He probably didn't know what was happening the first time the visions took him, honestly. But then everyone suspected Dalinar, including Dalinar himself, and he probably was too afraid to come forward and confess. And I mean, I have trouble faulting him for it, honestly. Like, first of all, he's seen the way the entire warcamps have turned against his father, whispering that he's mad and has visions. He's a respected general who conquered pretty much all of Alethkar, and they all still treat him horribly. What would they do to the quiet, outcast younger son who everyone already thinks is "creepy and weird"? (Thanks, Shallan.) Beyond that Dalinar, Adolin, and Navani have decided that Dalinar's visions might have been okay, because they're seeing the past. Renarin himself makes that distinction in the first book. Renarin on the other hand? He's explicitly seeing the future, something outright forbidden by Vorinism. That's got to be terrifying for him, thinking what the ardentia and everyone else might do to him if it came to light. (I'll be fascinated to see how other people react now that Renarin's powers are known). He doesn't even think he can trust his family with this secret, because what if they think he's evil or corrupted somehow. Renarin's like the survivor in a horror movie who got the zombie bite, and thinks if anyone finds out, they'll turn on him and realize he's "the enemy." He doesn't have his father's confidence or strength of reputation to protect him. The only way he can think to protect himself is by keeping it secret. So, when everyone finds the marks and assumes they're just a new development in Dalinar's visions, he lets them. And, I don't think it's too out of the question that after that happened, he might have tried to ensure that everyone kept thinking that, perhaps by using Dalinar's knife. As for hurting his family, yes, it did make Dalinar's visions even more suspect, but Dalinar's already been dealing with that whole issue fairly well. Adolin's thoroughly unsettled by the idea, but there's not much he can do about it. Dalinar pretty much just takes it in stride. If they all just think it's a part of what Dalinar's going through, well, they've already accepted that he isn't mad, so they just have to accept this too. And they do. The idea of Dalinar scratching the symbols isn't something that really hurts Dalinar at all throughout Words of Radiance. Maybe it might have in the long run, but Renarin was found out before that happened. I've got a feeling if anyone started actually coming after Dalinar for being a wicked future-seer, Renarin probably would have said something. He tends to be pretty self sacrificing when his family's in danger, but so long as it was still all under wraps, he let them keep thinking it wasn't him. Sorry, I, as a moderator, am now scolding myself for dragging us somewhat off-topic, but I'm also apparently incapable of writing anything short when Renarin is involved.
  2. I like how this thread is talking about like, Invested objects vs superhero weapons. Meanwhile I'm sitting over here twiddling my thumbs and trying not to reveal the MCU/Cosmere crossovers and connections I did before. There were two. Both were troublesome for very different reasons. I mean, listen, it's not my fault that I've got a thing for quiet younger brother princes who grew up with scholarly and magical tendencies in a society that glorifies a strong, warrior masculine ideal. Who have popular older brothers, surrounded by friends, who exemplify what a warrior prince should be. And while the younger brothers care about their older brothers and love them, there's probably some latent jealousy that they're the outcast and others don't like them the same way. Who then discover a horrible secret that they may actually be the enemy of their entire society and everything they've grown up with and cared for would be at risk if other people found out. I'm not saying that Renarin might see himself as "the monster that parents tell their children about at night" but if seeing the future is "of the Voidbringers," well... (I'm leaving. I will see myself out. I will go be garbage somewhere else now.)
  3. I probably lean towards this interpretation, though I like to think that he probably started carrying around chalk just in case. This thread actually makes me wonder if he intentionally went for Dalinar's knife at one point. He's terrified of being discovered, suspicion has already fallen on Dalinar. It's a perfect set up. Maybe Renarin waited until he felt the vision was coming on, snuck into Dalinar's room, and then made sure he had the knife in hand when the vision took control of him. Try to reinforce his cover story...
  4. *takes a deep breath* Alright so my thing with Renarin is, A) he became my fave character from just Way of Kings because who he is and his struggles are ones that really resonate with me. Words of Radiance then took all of those things and turned them up to 11 and now I melt into a sobbing puddle of Renarin emotions every time I think about it too much. True, he's not often in the spotlight, and if you're not paying attention to him, he can be easy to dismiss, or worse, misinterpret his intentions. But when you look closer (or, like me, dedicate hours upon hours to every tiny thing he has ever done) there's an incredible person behind the actions. I've seen people say he's reckless or foolhardy, and they seem to read it as kind of a selfish desire to prove himself while putting other people in danger because he's not competent enough to pull it off. Yet, I see almost the opposite. Renarin, as I read him, is an exceptionally selfless character and one who thinks (quite tragically) very little of his worth. Renarin doesn't rush into danger because he wants to be a star, he rushes in because he cares deeply for others and wants, just once in his life, to feel like he contributed something. He sees himself as worthless, a drain on everyone's time, and thinks he'd be better off dying in defense of those he cares about. He thinks if he could just do something worthwhile, his life would be a small price to pay. Of course, his father and brother, who love him quite dearly, worry for him when he does this sort of thing, because they don't see him as worthless at all (awwwww). He and Dalinar have a conversation that breaks my heart about this, and it's obvious to me how little Renarin values his life. He can't see that he deserves to be cared for, since he 'can't contribute.' (Bolding mine. Notable as the exact moment my heart shatters.) So that whole thing won me over to his side very strongly in the first book. Then comes everything in Words of Radiance regarding his visions. He thinks he's going mad, he thinks he's committing blasphemies against his will in seeing the future. He's terrified and he can't tell anyone, because future sight is "of the Voidbringers," so he does everything he can to make sure no one ever catches him in the midst of a vision. His Shardblade screams at him and he doesn't know why, yet he summons it and just tries to pretend that everything's normal because he's surely petrified what would happen if anybody found out. Meanwhile, he joins Bridge Four, and despite the fact that he's a lighteyed prince, he happily does menial work and drills and wears his lowborn spearman uniform with pride, because at least it's something he can do. He has such a desperate need to be useful that even being assigned to do dishes is something that makes him happy. This boy, he breaks my heart, it's too adorable. He's calm and respectful around the members of Bridge Four and starts to find a place with them. Kaladin worries that he's going to be a "lighteyed headache," another stuck-up princeling, but Renarin is anything but. And as for the end, I've got some theories regarding what exactly is happening with Renarin's visions, but if there's one thing I can say, it's that when Renarin goes into those visions, he's not in control of himself. Actually got confirmed Word of Brandon on that one. It just makes sense. If he's scared of being discovered, why would he choose to carve obvious symbols where others could find them? If he's ashamed of his lack of Alethi masculinity, why would he willingly turn to a feminine act of expression like writing? Answer: He wouldn't and he didn't. He was compelled to do so, not in control of himself as the visions took hold. So Renarin in the end of the climax is not him whining and uselessly giving up (though Shallan seems to see it as such). No, Renarin in the climax of Words of Radiance is him undergoing a horrifying ordeal as the Everstorm rips his free will away from him, causing him to reveal the fact that blasphemously he sees the future to those around him, as he screams and collapses to the floor, hands frantically scratching out symbols with a will of their own. As his control over his body is taken from him, he's also inundated with visions of doom and, what I assume are, the Everstorm bringing about the end of all things. TL;DR: All together? To me, Renarin is a character who undergoes great difficulties and hardship, an outcast from his society who wants desperately to fit in, a young man burdened with a terrible secret that his beliefs tell him is the wickedest of all sin, someone who would give his life in an instant if he thought it would give even the smallest bit of aid to those he loves. And despite all the things he deals with, he is a person who is kind and humble, brave in the face of a multitude of fears, and exceptionally clever and intelligent, even if he can't see it himself. For those reasons, and many others I haven't even touched upon here, he is my favorite character in anything of all time, and I would be hard-pressed to find someone I care about more. I'm only monstrous in my fanfics, Khyrindor. Speaking of which... July is swiftly approaching. Muahahaha. I would sell my soul, firstborn child, and like... at least $20 for Renarin point-of-view. BRANDON PLEASE. I BEG OF YOU.
  5. Okay, so I maybe don't have a spare table at the moment, but I have definitely metaphorically flipped many tables in this discussion, right?
  6. Batten down the hatches, Cosmere fandom, because July is swiftly approaching. And with it comes the Cosmere fanwork event of the season: Cosmere Fandom Is Still The Worst Fandom, or more colloquially, CFSWF. Now, for those of you unaware of what exactly CFSWF is, it's an annual, month-long event in which the fanwork creators of the fandom join together and attempt to write, draw, edit, or otherwise create the most horrifying, tragic fanworks the internet has ever seen. Grab your tissues, because if no one's crying by the end, we haven't done it right. If you're interested in participating this year, start gathering ideas and preparing your terrible creations, because CFSWF launches in July! In honor of the return of this event, I'd like to share a few of my favorites from years past on this month's Tumblr edition of Around the Cosmere! 1. Squirenonny First off it would be utterly remiss of me to start this off with anyone other than Nonny. In an absolutely stunning turn of events, Nonny released a new fic for every single day of July last year. An incredible undertaking, and each fic is just as awful as the last. Seriously, it's incredible. If you want to peruse the whole tag, you can find it under #31 days of sadfic. If you're looking for something to kick you in the chest, I recommend: A Radiant's Last Breath Words: 810 Fandom: Stormlight Archive Spoilers: through Words of Radiance Trigger Warnings: Character Death, Violence Summary: The Diagram was clear on one point: Taravangian needed the death rattle of a Radiant. The Second Blessing Words: 897 Fandom: Mistborn Spoilers: through Hero of Ages Trigger Warnings: Canonical Character Death, off-screen torture Summary: The screams echo in TenSoon’s ears long after the deed is done. Loshol Words: 6006 Fandom: Stormlight Archive Spoilers: through Words of Radiance Trigger Warnings: Blood, Character Death, Mild Torture (as in, primarily off screen) Summary: “They’ll take it from me, Syl. They’ll find a way to take you from me.” 2. Ladyknightradiant Megan's a good friend of mine and her fic Liberté is an excellent crossover with maximum tragedy. Just in case you ever needed Bridge Four erecting a Les Miserables barricade, Megan's got you covered. It's a fantastic read. Liberté Words: 7,342 Fandom: Stormlight Archive, Les Miserables Spoilers: through Way of Kings Trigger Warnings: Blood, Character Death Summary: Let’s pretend that the bridgemen were not all severely depressed, injured, beaten down, and exhausted all the time. Let’s pretend that they were passionate and dangerous and rebelled. 3. Featherwriter Listen, what good is having a news article if you can't use it to show off some of your own stuff? I'd be a poor Fandom Monster if I didn't take a moment to represent my claims to the title. Though I've written some pretty tragic fics in my day, one of the ones that's still a favorite of mine is a canon divergence fic where Kaladin becomes a surgeon in Kharbranth. It was entirely too much fun to write. Beneath the Bells of Kharbranth Words: 4,004 Fandom: Stormlight Archive Spoilers: through Way of Kings Trigger Warnings: Mild Blood, Implied Character Death Summary: Instead of joining the army, Kaladin goes to Kharbranth to train as a surgeon. After years of hard work, his talent for healing earns him a promotion. But there are secrets in Kharbranth, the likes of which he could never have imagined. 4. Tatter-demallion Not all CFSWF entries are fics though, and Emmy created an amazing songset for Shallan. Songsets are a kind of fanwork in which pictures are set to lyrics of a song, meant to be scrolled through as you listen to to the song. It's a really cool format and this set is stunning both in art and in melding the lyrics with Shallan's arc. Definitely worth a look! Stranger Song: "Stranger" by Ben Caplan Fandom: Stormlight Archive Spoilers: through Words of Radiance Trigger Warnings: Blood, Canonical Character Death, Abuse 5. Pmendicant I mentioned Pmendicant's stuff on the last Around the Cosmere, but I would hate to miss this very excellent animation from CFSWF. Just in case you weren't sad enough about Tien, PM's here to help you out. Song: "Stuff We Did" from the Up soundtrack by Michael Giacchino Fandom: Stormlight Archive Spoilers: through Way of Kings Trigger Warnings: Canonical Character Death, Blood And that's a small snapshot of the kind of misery that gets inflicted throughout the fandom during July. If you'd like to participate in this year's CFSWF, it's a lot of cruel, heartrending fun. Feel free to start prepping entries now, and I'm excited to see what everyone comes up with. July's right around the corner!
  7. I need this. I need this, okay. Alright. Okay. I haven’t even started reading it yet, I just saw that Wax is… I’m pumped. I’m pumped! The grand finale of Bands of Mourning, everyone! It’s a race to the end as we jump off of the last cliffhanger and tumble all the way through our final installment for this book. Ships, both literal and relational, are sailing and flying and there’s Allomancy and theories and reveals. It’s wild. And then there’s that ending. I’ll refrain from Secret History spoilers here, but I will say I feel a bit vindicated by the vehemence of my reactions to that last line here. The Salt Brigade starts early with this one. No Secret History needed. Whether or not my predictions were correct for this ending (and whether or not certain tables will be flipped and set ablaze) remains to be seen. (Warning that there are Secret History spoilers behind that Salt Brigade link! If you’re listening along as you read BoM, be careful!) We’ll start up fresh with Mistborn: Secret History next week, everyone! As that novella is a much shorter work, there will be three episodes of that! As always, comments and reactions are exceptionally appreciated and warm the depths of my cold dark heart.
  8. I called it! I never call stuff like that. But I totally called it and I never call stuff like that! That’s kind of why it’s fun to record these, because the few times that I do get it right I’m like: “It’s on recording! I got proof! I’ve got an ‘I told you so!’” First of all, I want to apologize for the brief hiatus we’ve had on Splintercast. It’s been a really hectic few weeks for me and I appreciate your patience. Free time has been in short supply for this Feather, especially the long swaths of time it takes to sit down and edit the audio for a whole episode. But we’re back now and we’re nearing the end. This time, a lot happens! Allegiances are revealed! Wax takes a tumble! Steris hardly gets any page-time but I talk about her anyway. And a cliffhanger of truly Branderson proportions rears its head at the end of 27. Past!Feather is wary, however. She expects shenanigans. I also mention a currently held theory of mine, that of Roshar’s Afterlife, so I’ll drop the link to that here. This reminds me that I ought to go update that with BoM and Secret History knowledge at some point. Hmm. A project for another day, however.
  9. Cosmere is still number one in my heart, okay? I’ll never leave the cosmere behind. I been in this for six years. We ain’t leavin’ the trenches now! Finally, things start to come together for me theory-wise. I talk myself back into my theory of Telsin’s alignment, which is probably a good thing. However, I also start to “figure out” my theory about who the Sovereign is, and I’m still mad that that theory was wrong because it made so much sense, listen. I will say, for everyone who does know who the Sovereign is, (including me, the present Feather, who is writing this) going back and listening to me trying to figure it out is pretty amusing. In a way that makes me want to punch the real Sovereign in the face because, Harmony’s Forearms, I want to punch him so much. There’s also a ridiculous amount of Dragon Age talk, but hey, that’s all I was doing all day before I started reading, gimme a break. I’d say that I was due for a Dragon Age/Cosmere crossover, but actually… I already wrote one. Ha. Enjoy!
  10. Ohhh okay. So pre-Catacendre, the Southerners were living super hot. Now that things are "normal" they think it's freezing. I didn't put that together! That makes sense. And yeah, considering the hints we get from Secret History I have a lot of questions about Saze and the Sovereign's relationship with the Southerners. There's a lot there we don't understand and I need more ammunition for my steadily growing mountain of salt.
  11. Yep, sorry about the delay on this one. It was a combined effort in me being overwhelmed at work and then Eric forgetting to post after it was finished. So we both get to share the blame on the mini hiatus. I think we might move towards posting on Thursdays, just because it's much easier for me. Since we kind of got derailed from the schedule, that'll probably be the go-ahead from now through Secret History.
  12. I don’t think it was him. I don’t think it was. I’m pretty sure he was dead. But... maybe... Augh! I don’t know! I’m doubting everything! I would like to issue a formal apology to my new son, Allik, whom I assume to be a Hemalurgic experiment in this chapter. Listen. We all make mistakes. Allik, I didn’t mean it. Please forgive me. Like also that mistake of me talking myself out of a theory I’ve held since the beginning. Oops. Also, burning questions such as: was Preservation the ultimate prescriptivist? (Probably, that dirty language-keeping Shard.) Thankfully my rabid linguist senses get distracted by making some new Connections later on. Sign me up for duralumin ferring, guys. I also talk about The 100 which... was a great show and then started making some stupid writing decisions in the time between when I recorded this and when it got released. Dangit, The 100. And get sad about Cullen. My Dragon Age husband. Listen. And rap a bit of Hamilton. It’s a multifandom mess up in here. (Slight spoiler warning: I did end up asking Brandon if Iyatil was a Southern Scadrian, only to find out that the answer is “not really.”)
  13. Hello all, welcome back to Around the Cosmere. Here, I'm going to take you back to the crazy world of the tumblr fandom, and do a different kind of feature this time. I'm going to highlight some of our wonderful fanartists over on the other side of the pond. These are not, by far, the only artists over on that side, but these are a few of my favorites and those who have consistently churned out a lot of art for us over the years. First up, the lovely ExMakina. Maki's art is always so stunning to me, and she's a great person too. I've used one of her Renarin portraits as an icon on tumblr for years, and I just love seeing every new piece she comes out with. Her Brandon Sanderson tag is here, and you can see some of the great things she's made recently! Below the tag are a few of my favorites as well. Maki also has a 17S account, and a thread where she sometimes posts new art. If you like her stuff, go give her some upvotes! Next up, BotanicaXu. Botanica actually lives in China, and helps out with the Chinese translation team for Cosmere books. She's a wonderfully dedicated fan and her art is beautiful too. The intricate details and gorgeous lineart of her works gives her a distinctive style, and it's a style that's captured most of the Cosmere characters, even the very minor ones! You can find her blog here, with her cosmere tag labeled under #CFSBF here. And of course, a few of my faves to share. She's also got a 17S account that can be found here. Third, we've got Silver, who has long been a friend of mine and whose art deserves a mention. Her art blog can be found at BeneathSilverStars, and the thing that always strikes me is the amazing watercolor painting style that she uses to color. She's a big fan of art collabs too, so you might see lineart from others that has been colored over and given the Silver treatment. She loves putting everyone in pretty dresses. Yes. Everyone. Also, her fave character is Tien and she vehemently denies that he is dead. Her art blog is here and her tag for cosmere is #CFSBF. My picks from Silver: Last but not least, I want to shine a spotlight on Rusty, who does some amazing comic art for the cosmere. I always find myself cracking up at the stuff they do, but don't be surprised if you see more serious fanart around as well. Rusty's a great addition to the fandom and I find myself constantly checking the blog PMendicant for more! There's not a specifically cosmere tag, but both #Mistborn and #Stormlight Archive are well populated! And that's a quick highlight of some of the cool fanartists we've got from the tumblr side of things. If you like these artists, please feel free to leave some comments for them, either here or with a message to their blogs. If you leave a message here for them, I'll make sure it gets back for them to see. Thanks for reading, and come back next week to read some more about what's going on with the RPs!
  14. Don’t lose your guns, Wax. I feel like I’m babysitting him. Like every time he loses his guns, I’m like ‘Go get those back. Pick them up. What’re you doing?’ In which a whole heck of a lot happens. The end of Lady Kelesina’s party and we flee into the countryside with our heroes to try to see what exactly the Set is up to. There’s an absolutely beautiful Waxteris moment (which, yes, is the ship name that I belatedly decided on.) Expect much squeeing. I also set sail on the S.S. WaynLaan as well, because huh, those two certainly have a remarkable amount of similarity. And my pet theory about Telsin Ladrian gets mentioned again, but we have yet to see if such a theory will be proven true or not. Also EEEEE SOUTHERN SCADRIAL STUFF. YEAH. So cool. So so cool.
  15. Ahhh, see and this was even one I wasn't too thrilled about. I felt like the "plainly shattered" was too obvious as a flip for "Shattered Plains" and it gets a little nonsensey in the middle where I'm trying to make grammatical flips that end up not necessarily terribly meaningful. But, for me, keteks are like grammar puzzles. And as a linguistics grammar person, I adore twisting grammar about and making it do what I want. There's some reversals that seem obvious to me. "Spearman became slave" and "Slave becomes spearman" are easy enough reversals that work well (with an added twist on verb tense to differentiate them just a smidge.) Other times, though, I think up a phrase I kind of want to use, and have to fiddle with it in order to make its reversal work. "If I add a verb here, can I use that as a noun in the flip?" "I have to take that article out, it won't reverse correctly at all, but does the phrase still work without it?" (A word to the keteking wise: articles are the worst and you should avoid them whenever possible. Those little "a" "an" and "the" will murder you when you try to turn them about.) So yeah, it's all about fiddling with the phrases and seeing if there's ways to make things work. When you figure out something really fun and clever, it all just starts to fit. Finishing keteks is the best feeling, honestly.
  16. I forgot about this thread until it got bumped... ha. So a friend of mine requested something with Shallan, Kaladin, and Adolin for Christmas, and me being me, I decided to write a ketek for the three of them. I feel like my keteks are a little bit ridiculously long, in that their "five parts" tend to be... like full sentences. It's 53 words, but whatever. Long keteks are just more fun. Two Soldiers, Two Radiants, Two Lighteyes Families found broken in pieces Plainly shattering this light within Loved one became liar Spearman turned slave Proud prince defeated Raise Light up! We bind fate as fate binds us up Light raises defeated prince’s pride Slave turns spearman Liar becomes one loved Within light, this Shattered Plains’ pieces In brokenness, found family
  17. God bless. Harmony bless. Maker bless. Every... every deity just bless Steris Harms. Let’s just be real right here. Honor? Uh, Endowment? Like, all the Shards just need to like, group together, call a truce real quick, and bless Steris Harms. Kay? There we go. So it is decreed. This episode of Splintercast, Feather discusses RP and how she really ought to get around to joining Mistborn: The Inquisition. Listen, guys. I love RP so much, but I like chat RP. It’s gotta be fast. Instant responses. Wait, you’re here to hear about Bands of Mourning? Oh, okay I guess we can do that too. Cliffhangers continue to be my nemesis, but hey at least we got some fancy party infiltrations and a firefight in a graveyard. Steris is, of course, perfect, like usual. Dalish is cute and then naughty and must be exiled. And I’m upset that we haven’t talked about MeLaan recently. Also a bizarre conversation about my past and future selves, which drifts frighteningly close to Homestuck. Which is ending... today. 4/13. Happy Homestuck Day, everybody. It’s the last true one. Regardless of whether or not you’re Homestuck trash, if you liked this episode, feel free to drop a comment down below! See you next week!
  18. For those names, it's my own intuition. There are some of the names that actually do have some insight into, but "kandra" and "MeLaan" I haven't heard anything about. For the most part, I try to match Brandon's pronunciations if I can, though Brandon has said many times that he doesn't actually consider some pronunciations more "canon" than others. Still, I like to match his if possible. If I don't know how Brandon pronounces a word, though, I just give it my best shot.
  19. Of course, Bota! They're amazing! I admit I farm them for things I missed to put on Adonalsium quite a bit!
  20. Hmmm one of these days, I'll actually get Eliane Casuana up and running in MBI. I made a deal with Chaos ages ago that I would... and then I ended up sticking her in a modern-day Elendel RP that has since run its breadth and stalled out. Hmm, how to adapt her (and possibly her brother Dier) to MBI though...
  21. Shut up, Wax. Not everyone has to go out and like, vigilante justice fight crime with their Allomancy. Maybe some people like to juggle, all right? In which my commentary on these chapters contains significantly more jingle bells than one might have expected. What can I say? The kitten wants what the kitten wants. And usually that’s jingly feather toys. Anyway, this week on Splintercast, Feather gets confused about gondolas. Wax continues to be an uptight old man who needs to chill, and Wayne perfectly embodies the struggle of the older generations against all those dang millennials and their cell phones and twitter birds and not immediately payin’ off all their student loans. Good times. Also strange coins arise from strange beggars, and I immediately pick up on the fact that there’s shenanigans going on there. I love it when I pick up on shenanigans. It makes me feel competent. And just when you think you’re safe from me gushing over Steris, I’ll smack you with a hard dose for this week. I also hone in on a cameo from a major character... only to completely be unable to figure out who she is. (Sorry Khriss. I know better now.)
  22. The Cosmere Fandom Still Worst Fandom event launches in July! Start thinking up your maniacal schemes now, dear fandom...
  23. Hello everyone, it's Feather, and this time not with a Splintercast episode. Shocking, I know. Anyway, I'm here to bring you another update on Around the Cosmere, and this time I'd like to highlight a place that's very near and dear to my heart. As many of you have probably guessed, 17th Shard is not the only major gathering place of Cosmere fans, and I'd like to introduce you guys to a community of fans with whom I'm very involved: the Tumblr Cosmere fandom! For those who are unaware of what Tumblr is, it's a microblogging platform that lets users share pictures, text, video, and all kinds of different posts. In practice, I usually like to describe it as somewhat akin to Pinterest, but for fiction. Tumblr thrives on fandoms of all kinds: books, tv shows, movies, video games, webcomics, and more! And the Cosmere fandom is no exception! It's kind of a crazy jumble of creative energy, fanworks, jokes, memes, shipping, theories, roleplay, and just about everything you could consider. So, you want to find the fandom on Tumblr. The first thing you might notice is that there are a lot of Cosmere posts tagged #CFSBF. This lovely little acronym is short for "Cosmere Fandom is Still the Best Fandom." Because, heck yeah. Basically, it was something that I used to use on my personal blog that then spread out to the fandom as a whole, and has kind of become a catchphrase. But don't take my word for it. Hear it from an expert here! Now, let's talk about some fun blogs. We've got a few aggregators around the fandom, which are blogs dedicated to reblogging works by other people so that they're all in one place. I'm the moderator of a fairly large one called Adonalsium, that collects fanworks of all kinds, from all of Brandon's books, both Cosmere and Non-Cosmere. The wonderful Botanica Xu (who is also an incredible fanartist) also runs the "imaginary" blogs, Imaginary Scadrial, Imaginary Sel andImaginary Roshar, collect works for Mistborn, Elantris/Emperor's Soul, and Stormlight Archive, respectively. There are some other great projects going on too, such as Incorrect Mistborn Quotes, which is a terribly fun blog, taking quotations from other works and attributing them to Mistborn characters.Incorrect Stormlight Quotes does the same thing with the Stormlight characters! And then the lovely I Am A Stick blog has a single purpose: to make sure that everyone remembers that the stick is, in fact, a stick. Maybe you're looking for something a little bit more involved, though. You want to stretch your creative muscles, show off your stuff, make some friends and be a part of something cool. Or maybe you just want to see some awesome content made by other people. Well, you've got a few cool options, depending on what kind of content you're looking for: First and foremost is the Cosmere Challenge. The CC is a prompt blog that does rotating ideas and challenges, usually about one a month. Sometimes these are pairings, sometimes they're situations, sometimes they're AUs or crossovers. They're good for a quick burst of inspiration, or if you want to contribute something to an event. By far, the challenge that gets the most submissions is the now annual event: Cosmere Fandom is Still the Worst Fandom, in which everyone tries to write/draw/create the most tragic, heart-wrenching, horrifying stories and ideas to inflict them on everyone else. Because the only thing better than suffering is making other people suffer, right? Now is the time to start thinking of ideas, as the CFSWF challenge usually happens in the summer! If you want something more for the long-haul, you could consider checking out the Cosmere RP, a college-AU taking place in Kharbranth University. Characters from all over the cosmere are welcome and they're all at the same university and all have blogs on tumblr. It's a wild ride. Marsh moved in with Edgli? Kelsier got into a fight with Adolin? And who exactly is dating who between Kaladin, Adolin, Shallan, and Renarin? Stay tuned for more. If you want to get in on the action, there's a list of characters the RP is still looking for! So, that's your crash course to what's going on with the tumblr side of the fandom. If there's any questions about the blogs here or how tumblr works or anything, feel free to ask me things. I'm more than happy to help answer queries. Have fun, Sharders!
  24. Wait there are other algebra limericks? I know this one: ( (12 + 144 + 20 + 3 Sqrt[4]) / 7 ) + 5*11 = 92 + 0 . Which is, for those following along at home: A dozen, a gross, and a score, plus three times the square root of four, divided by seven, plus five times eleven, Is nine squared and not a bit more!
  25. [sputters] I don’t... even have words for what I am feeling about this development at the moment. An episode that has it all. To quote myself: we’ve got some firefight, some cutes, some canoodling, deep snogs. Steris Harms continues to be perfect while Wayne continues to be on my bad list. We see some devices which double as plot devices for the first time. Yeeeeeeee. Also. I can’t figure out how the heck one is supposed to pronounce the word “Scadrial.” [sKAY-dree-ul]? [sKAD-ree-ul]? We just don’t know. Your weekly dose of Steris fangirling contained within, as well as some discussion of cosmere books in other languages. Because those are just cool. In other news, keep an eye on the news box here this week, because you’ll soon see another non-Splintercast post from me! Oooh, what could it be? It’s a surprise.
