[Discuss] Theory: Lift is the Nightwatcher's Bondsmith
StormingTexan replied to SpinningSky's topic in Stormlight Archive
I like the theory! One note though. I do not think she is actually aging slower if that is what you mean. It is just her perception of herself and how she projects herself to others. Presumably because of the trauma of loosing her mother she wants to remain a kid but she is clearly aging we see this on screen as her body is getting bigger. Unless I am missing something this is how I always interoperated it.- 14 replies

I'd love for Wayne to become a member of the 17th Shard! I am slightly disappointed by this WoB though it does not completely prohibit the possibility I feel like it is kind of putting him in a place where he will not physically be around by Era #3. Wayne is one of my favorite characters. Would love for him to be "trading" for the 17th Shard! Pretty sure the offworlders will be Ghostbloods although he may be referring to the Scadrial Ghostbloods.

Correct they can re-use the cube but it still has to be charged and from what we are seeing the charge deteriorates after a period of time. So let's say you leave the mother land on an exploration mission with even a dozen or more of the cubes they are limited by range by the deterioration period of the charge unless they bring their own coinshots to recharge them. Unless they have a way to prevent the deterioration that we have not seen yet. Yes obviously there must be some benefit to them to have access to Metalborn. I am kind of leaning toward they do not have much or enough access to particular ones. Edit: @Isilel Yes that is an idea essentially using the big ships to "jump start" the little ones. Perhaps that is why we saw it done the way it was in BoM since it was a crashed ship.
-
Right I get that. But to launch a dingy (or skimmer what ever you want to call it) do they need a primer cube like we saw in BoM? I am picturing the primer cubes kind of like a battery in a car. Needed initially to turn the engine on. Once you start driving the alternator uses mechanical energy to recharge the battery but without the battery (or primer cube in this case) the car would not start initially. Now with a big airship they could potentially just "leave the car on" indefinitely but I would think the smaller ones would be "started" at each use.
-
Yes but what I am getting at is assuming the primer cubes need to be used periodically this would limit the range of the ships if they do not have access to a coinshot on the actual crew. It is also clear that they build their ships with a coinshot in mind with the straps and stuff Wax used. From what we see the cubes charges deteriorate. Perhaps the large airships can run for a long time once primed so not really necessary but the smaller skimmers I would think need to be primed to operate which would require re-charging. Unless it is as mentioned above they have some way to keep the cubes from deteriorating. Which is entirely possible obviously they are not being completely transparent. I didn't interpret this way. More of posturing implying a coinshot alone without their technology is inferior not that they do not need them. Although probably done in a little bit of a condescending way the Admiral does address him with honorifics implying they do hold Allomancers in high regard.
-
Ah I see now good catch. Wonder if they only have to do this with the big ships I do not think they did this with the Wilg maybe because it is much lighter. @robardin Totally forgot about that explanation in the book thanks! Clearly I need to re-read BoM before LM comes out! Although we do not know exactly how long the charge last it seems like it does deteriorate without "toping off" so I would assume you would have to have a Coinshot on the crew for any lengthy travel.

This is kind of along the lines of what I was thinking but why would Allik worry about running out of metal? I was assuming he is referring to Wax's steel but maybe he was talking about the ettmetal. It seems like the grenades can be used multiple times so in my head the ettmetal is being used like a metal mind and does not actually get consumed just the allomantic charge. You know he does call it a "primer" cube. So instead of supplying continuous power it is potentially just "priming" a mechanical engine of some sorts. This makes more sense from what we have seen with the grenades. If this is the case though still not sure why Allik was concerned with running out of metal.
-
Ok so I just went back and checked and Allik mentions when they pick up Steris they should be "ok" to continue flying until their metal runs out so there must be something that reduces the consumption of the charged primer cube opposed to what we are seeing when used as a grenade.
-
Agreed it has to be more than steel pushes. Before these preview chapters I assumed the charged primer cubes were essentially "pushing" the propellers to create lift. Now we have seen they expire pretty quickly and do not indefinitely hold their charge. So they must be more of a starter/battery to get the propellers going then some other means either magically or mechanically maintain the flight. I guess it is possible that there is very little draw on the primer cubes needed to spin the propeller vs. a burst when used as a grenade but I still l think it would be pretty short lived. I also think from what we have learned about the cubes that the crew would have to contain a coinshot to charge the primer cubes continuously and provide the inital push for the lift. Yes I also have not seen anything regarding storing weight of an inanimate object. From what we have see it is just used to essentially nullify the weight of the crew. Interestingly this could be used in reverse if you needed to descend quickly (like to avoid cannon balls being shot at you).

I cannot believe no one has mentioned the giant reveal in this chapter! Finally we have confirmation on what color the TP is in the Northern and Southern Scadrial!

I do think there is going to be a curve ball. My tin foil hat prediction is Trell is Kelsier with absolutely no real basis as to how or why and I am sure full of a million holes. However Brandon has said specifically the metal is not of Endowment.
-
I am loving the Marasi and Wayne team! Also adorable that Wax straps Max to him and takes him flying. Really curious if we will see him in the future take after his father. I have been on the Trell = Autonomy for a while now but leaning more towards Trell=Autonomy+Odium. Only hang up here is what happened in RoW but who knows. Really thinking as gold is associated with Odium, Red will be associated with Autonomy (not to be confused with red signifying corrupted investiture). I think we are seeing a melding of two intents and this explains the "men of gold and red).
-
Yes this is kind of what I thought and if you were a coin shot you could direct anything heading your way away from you. Marasi could have thrown it in the group of Set guys when they started shooting so the bullets would fly back at them but that is obviously pretty dangerous. Curious if it does a 360 push or directional to a face of the cube. It is interesting that Marasi had to "top off" her cube. I think it's an all or nothing device meaning you can not throw it somewhere and use 25% of he power. So this must mean the alomantic charge degrades after a certain period of time.

Theory about Adonalsium
StormingTexan replied to SwordNimiForPresident's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Interesting kind of like Adonalsium was an alloy of 16 metals that they split to the base metals. I kind of always pictured it more like crystals in my head. -
I thought this was awesome too! The grenades do not grant powers though they just extend the powers an Allomancer charges them with. It's been a while since I read BoM but from what I remember when they were testing it when Wax filled it and threw it at Wayne it didn't make Wayne a coinshot the cube just acted like a coinshot in Waynes vicinity. Obviously this will be super beneficial for some metals but almost unless for others (tin and pewter good examples of almost unless). Marasi actually mentions how the grenade makes her power one of the most useful which we get to see first hand. Same would be said for bendalloy you could use it to put a speed bubble around an ally. Pretty cool implications. Interestingly she had three grenades and said Wax had filled one. So she can "use" one with a power she does not have but it does not grant her the power it just gives her a "coinshot in a box" but she is not actively controlling any of the metal being pushed the grenade is creating a "coinshot AOE". I am trying to come up with situations where it would be useful since you cannot really control the pushes. Hoping we get to see it in the next chapters since it was mentioned.

Me too. Said that in that last thread but looks like Marasi and Allik are still together so sadly will probably not happen. I do like them as a team though they are fun together.
-
I mean why would they date for that matter? Especially long term like this and not part of a disguise (at least that we know of). Fair point. I see it more on her side. I think Wayne is looking for someone to settle down with though he is looking for love in all the wrong places. First Ranette and now MeLann secretly hoping his and Marasi's partnership evolves in to something more but probably a long shot.

This should fit all the criteria. Super easy and "healthy" requires no heat source. https://www.sugardishme.com/the-best-easy-5-bean-salad-recipe/

Sure in modern times but as an analog in this time period seems odd to me especially considering Wayne would be in late 30s. I agree on the second point but mainly because I think them dating this long in general is odd of course Wayne has been looking for love in all the wrong places. I'm not exactly sure why it is so odd to me just seems unlikely they went from flings on a train to dating seriously for 6 years off screen but nothing further.
-
Before this I had only read the prologue. I like the time skip but I think it is weird that we have had 6 years pass and Wayne and MeLaan have apparently been dating all this time up until very recently. I dunno this just seemed like a "fling" to me in the last book. It feels like if they have been together this long they should have been married. Not for any moral reasons obviously that ship sailed in the last book but it just seems weird to me they would just "date" this long. On the other hand I love the time skip for Wax and Steris. Awesome to me they seem to be happy (all things considered) and they have two kids! As far as the political tension I think it is interesting but again feeling a bit of disconnect with what has taken place in the past 6 years. It just seems like a long ramp up time I would have thought more would have developed between the basin and southern governments but may just be missing a lot of context this early on so I will hold judgment. I am pretty hyped by the blurb and this book. I's the bitter sweet feeling though knowing this era will end. When I first read AoL years ago I was sure I wouldn't like it because of the "western steam punk" setting just not my thing. I was completely wrong and the characters in this era have been some of my favorites. When you add in all the Cosmere implications this era is just awesome.

I listen to audio books and it is pronounced like option one so that will always be in my head cannon. In SA Michael Kramer and Kate Reading pronounce Sadeas differently but I think it was Michael who said it first and the most so I always say it like he does and it always sounds wrong when Kate says it.

@KnightsOfHonor No I pretty much got that impression of him from the books. I just posted the quote because it was relevant to what @offer said. Would you not agree that Kelsier is a morally grey character? I mean putting aside all the killing he was literally a thief as well. Obviously with a "grey" character some people are gong lean both ways as far as their opinions. He is one of my favorite Cosmere characters btw.

Welcome! These happen to be my favorite full length and shorter novels as well.
