  1. I had forgotten about the bridge drawing the arrows that might have otherwise hit Kaladin, mostly remembering his stunts toward the end of WoK with the shields. Now don't get me wrong, because I believe you most likely have it correct, specially given what we know about the basic lashing, but I still think the physics would work out fine if the reverse doesn't break the connection to the planet.
  2. It wouldn't have to break the gravitational attraction to the planet, just provide a strong enough force to alter the flight of the arrows. Wind can exert enough force to blow a projectile off course without altering gravity, so a second gravity (or gravity-like) field where there wouldn't normally be one could do the same. basically adding a strong attractive force to an object should be sufficient to pull objects from the air toward it, and let kaladin avoid becoming a human pincushion
  3. Oh, I'm sure of that. problem is distraction. so far I had been able to prevent myself getting distracted by anything else (for the most part), until recently. I'll get back to it soon, probably today in fact, since I had to take the day off of work anyway.
  4. that's my favorite of Kay's books that I have read, though I do like The Lions of Al-Rassan a lot as well. unrelated to that: I am about 200 pages from the end of Toll the Hounds, and I have somewhat stalled. given that I have already read something like 6000 pages worth of this series in the past 2-3 months, I'm honestly kind of surprised I didn't get distracted sooner than this. still, I've got Christmas travels coming up, so I will probably have ample time for more reading then.
  5. well we already know that bad alloys of a certain metal won't work quite right (up to and including harming/killing the person attempting to burn it) so I would guess that for allomantic purposes rust or blood are not pure enough sources of iron. I am not an expert on biochemistry, but I assume the iron in blood is bound to other elements/compounds, and isn't just floating around as pure iron molecules most of the time. same for any other metallic nutrient we need. so if a lurcher can't detect/burn iron when they swallow steel, it would stand to reason that they wouldn't detect the iron in blood or rust etc
  6. that we know of...
  7. oh yeah, it is great. I turned on the tv one sunday afternoon a couple months back, saw it was on, and figured I'd give it a try, since I'd heard good things about it. Turns out they were running a marathon of pretty much the whole second season (at least), and I ended up watching 10 or 11 episodes in a row all I'm saying is that I'll occasionally sit back and think to myself that it's a bit weird for me to be watching it (or anything else intended for younger viewers/readers/players/etc) given that it is intended for people less than half my age. usually these feelings subside pretty quickly
  8. Does it count as reading late into the night if it is daytime again when you stop? I practically didn't put Words of Radiance down the entire weekend after it came out. bought it friday night, finished it sunday morning. guess I don't actually feel very guilty about that that said, actual guilty pleasure: pretty much anything that is clearly intended for a younger audience than me. basically i alwaysfeel a bit guilty is I sit down to watch, say, gravity falls, or Justice League cartoons, or replay video games that I used to play in grade school (e.g. pokemon)
  9. I kinda liked how Curtis and his husband were shown in this past episode. he comes in and introduces the man with him as his husband, and it is just normal. felicity is awkward, but it is normal felicity awkward not can't-handle-gay-marriage awkward. the fact that the show doesn't bother to make a big deal out of it feels like a real step forward, as compared to tv shows in the 90s where the only reason a character would be gay is so you could do a main character learns to accept gay people storyline.
  10. I didn't say that. you have no proof
  11. I can just picture a looney-tunes version of mistborn, where Kelsier does this to taunt the noblemen
  12. it does occasionally occur to me that it's weird that we haven't seen one. then again, the point of the timeline on trenzalore was that he had died there, so presumably that timeline didn't go any further into his future. also, i guess it is also possible that some of what happened then were rewritten by the stuff that happened when he regenerated.
  13. twice in fact, once in that victorian times xmas episode and the other was in dalek asylum.
  14. makes sense. guess I sort of assumed his granddaughter would be among them.
  15. huh, didn't know that.
  16. makes sense, honestly. they are an enormous pain to work with even when you just have integers in them. with variables, you end up with a ponderous number of ridiculously long expressions of multiple variables to manipulate. just teh basic algebra parts take forever, before you even bring in the theory and proof parts
  17. I'll second the point about the show needing to be less on-the-nose with its preachiness. especially because it tends to get those points across better with just the regular action. its sort of a "show, don't tell" problem and yea, the last few episodes have been enjoyable enough that I hadn't noticed, but it is really weird to let us know who the season big bad is up front, then ignore her for weeks at a time. still, Kara is really fun, and the whole cast has generally been doing a pretty good job so far, so no big complaints, only the occasional minor quibble
  18. As I understood it, it works more or less by sort of compressing space in front of the ship and expanding space behind, causing the bubble of space containing the ship to move, while the ship stays stationary within that bubble. following from that, i wonder if you couldn't accomplish a similar effect using time bubbles. not sure how it would work, precisely, but time and space are related, so it wouldn't be completely unreasonable that with some controlled overlapping of cadmium and bendalloy bubbles you could create a similar effect, where local spacetime itself moves taking the ship with it.
  19. putting in spoiler tags for good measure:
  20. this seems like the reasonable solution, I think. especially considering they live in different cities. there is very little chance that Felicity would ever actually meet with the mother (i've already forgotten her name). that said, if he told felicity and she ever did meet with the mother (and knowing this show, it would happen) I'm not sure how well she'd be abl to keep the secret.
  21. definitely one of the best Discworld books, possibly the best non-nightwatch book (though there are some other good competitors for that)
  22. seems likely. I know there are some rumors that they are talking about doing some kind of crossover with supergirl. if they do, they could work aliens into the world that way, then retcon the origin, at least if they leave it vague enough
  23. given the tone of this season's Arrow, i'd bet they're going with mysticism. for now at least.
