  1. I'll second this. Helps that Berenthal was pretty great in the role. I liked Electra, but she was all tied up with the more mystical aspects, and I don't know that they handled those quite as well as the street level stuff. still, between both seasons of Daredevil and the one season of Jessica Jones, I am definitely excited for the eventual Defenders series.
  2. From Thomas Marshall (a contemporary politician) when he learned that Theodore Roosevelt had died (in his sleep): "Death had to take him in his sleep, for if he was awake there'd have been a fight."
  3. I certainly didn't realize you were mistaken, so definitely can't blame you for it
  4. My personal dream for next season of legends would be to scrap the whole time travel aspect and just do a version of Birds of Prey. cast: Felicity can go over there to get away from Ollie. That romance made for some of the most annoying aspects of her character, so I'm hoping distancing her from that lets her get back to S1 and S2 version. Curtis can take over for her on Arrow set it in Detroit and bring in Vixen as a full time part of the team. Sara Lance can go too because Caity Lotz is fantastic and improves everything. maybe bring in HawkGirl, but give her better writing and let her let loose a bit. this version is kind of boring so far. Nyssa, Thea, and Laurel can visit on occasion. others too, I guess. Maybe bring the Huntress in for an ep or two. whatever happened to her anyway?
  5. if capacitors increase velocity quadratically, then 20 should get you 400x the rate, which would be 2 m/s or a fast walking pace.
  6. yea. i think canonically its olympics in the comics, but I don't remember what exactly they said in the show
  7. well, I mean it's been a while since I did physics, and my gen physics class never got into the whole electricity stuff, that was saved for more advanced classes that I didn't take, but I do know F=ma. seems like, even given a 10 g object, 5 newtons should give 500 m/s^2 of acceleration, which starting from rest and lasting 10 microseconds would get you to a grand total final speed of something like 5 millimeters per second, I think. unless I am missing something
  8. I seem to remember them doing things like carving stuff out of wood, then soulcasting it into metal or stone, though, which only works if it preserves volume
  9. well, they'd probably die...but it probably depends a bit on how soulcasting affects volume and mass. do we have a detailed breakdown on how that works?
  10. he's an olympic athlete, if memory serves. its a bit hard to remember since it hasn't been mentioned since an early episode this season, but he definitely has some kind of sports background.
  11. snipped down a bit, so I can offer a cogent response: I agree that it isn't inherently bad for them to experiment with the character, and try different takes on him, but at the same time, you have to expect that taking a beloved character and making these sorts of changes to him will rub some people the wrong way. based on everything I have seen and heard, they took a character who most people grew up with as a beacon of hope and goodness, and basically took both of those attributes away from him (not to say he isn't good, but certainly not the shining example of it). To many, including me, it just doesn't work, others, clearly, have a different opinion. on the "we don't need another dark knight" comment: but this is kind of my point. what is Man of Steel or Batman vs Superman if not a dark knight style version of the superman character? I know that wasn't your actual point, but that was my initial reaction to it. for the record though: I have no opinion on affleck's batman. nothing I've seen of him suggests that he is a bad portrayal. Superman and luthor were the parts that bothered me. likewise, I am not a Marvel apologist, but I am also a lot less familiar with their characters. they could make as many changes as they wanted to Thor and I would literally never know. similar but to a lesser extent with most of the others, so to the extent that my problem with BvS is that I don't like their version of Superman, that was just not really going to be an issue with Marvel. plus, subjectively, I kind of like the quippy Marvel movies, so even changes to characters to get them into that format are generally not going to bother me too much, whereas the dark and brooding DC films are less likely to be to my tastes.
  12. liked Sailing to Sarantium, but Tigana and Lions of Al Rassan are still the top for me. need to get around to reading Lord fo Emperors. I have it, but just haven't felt like picking it up yet
  13. building from there: as a writer, constantly burn electrum to see what you will write next, then write something different.
  14. for an explanation on at least some of the hate, let me zero in on this right here: one of my problems with this movie, based on every trailer I have seen of it (again, haven't actually watched it), is Cavill's superman. every image I see of him, the only thing I can think is "That doesn't look like superman" and it all comes down to mood. every image I have seen, he is angry and dark, and that just does not fit what I think Superman should be. so when I see angry Cavill scowling down from the screen, I can't associate that image with the Superman I am familiar with. I'm not blaming Cavill for this, it sounds like it comes more from the writers and director, and he is just playing it the way they want him to, but its things like this that put people off.
  15. thanks. I wonder if they are actually just different versions of the same oath. seems pretty likely, though I suppose it is possible they are separate. or that one is just a paraphrased version from the same source
  16. Last I saw we didn't have confirmation as to which order that was for (though stonewards does seem the most likely). also, someone would have to double check this, but I swear I've seen a version where it was "I will stand where others fall" or something along those lines, but I can't find that reference anymore
  17. every trailer I have seen has been extremely off-putting. grim, scowly superman and manic, jibbering Lex Luthor in particular bother me to no end. basically every time I see a picture of angry superman or hear luthor's monologuing, it makes me want to see the movie a little bit less; mostly I think this is because I am biased by the thoroughly excellent JLU versions of both characters. at this point, I have no plans to see it, though I suppose if a bunch of my friends decided they were going to, I wouldn't refuse.
  18. coppermind has the bondsmith oath as "I will unite instead of divide. I will bring men together." which are the exact words from the book. not sure how necessary the second bit is, but there you have it.
  19. hah, they hit on all of the interesting ones I was thinking about in the first few posts. thanks
  20. That's along the lines of what I was thinking. also that it would be really cool to be able to tap balance or to store your ability to detect pain (or hunger or thirst which I think have also been included as senses by some) temporarily. someone tapping color vision migth be able to replicate the Nalthian third heightening's color perception. edit: just occurred to me and I don't want to double post: Could a bronze misting/tin ferring twinborn store their bronze allomantic sense (or a iron/steel misting store their metal detection sense) in a tinmind? could a 4th heightening awakener with tin ferruchemy (somehow) store their lifesense?
  21. I always hate posting here just because at 116 pages, I'm convinced anything I ask has already been asked (and probably phrased better too), but I'm not searching through over a thousand posts to find it, so here goes: a couple questions on tinminds, specifically modern science now acknowledges far more than just 5 senses, including some interesting ones like sense of balance and proprioception, aka you ability to sense where your body parts are in relation to one another, and depending on who you ask, even the traditional 5 might be split up into multiple senses (color vision is moderated by specific cells, and could be considered separate from our ability to detect intensity of light, and Touch is probably at least 3 different senses that act through different channels: pressure detection, temperature detection or thermoception, pain detection or nociception, etc.). i'm probably oversimplifying all this a little bit. anyway, so questions: 1. would a properly educated ferruchemist be able to store and tap these additional senses? 2. for senses that are split into pieces would a properly educated ferruchemist be able to store the more narrowly defined sense e.g. would he be able to store/tap just the ability to detect temperature instead of the entire sense of touch? following that example, if they were so educated, would they still be able to store/tap the sense of touch?
  22. collectible card game is correct. Depending on your personality this advice may or may not help (wouldn't have been useful for me, for example) but a lot of card/comic shops host games (around here it is Friday Night Magic, not sure how far/wide that carries) so if you are up for that sort of thing it is generally a good way to meet people who play the game in your area. downside: most, if not all, of them will be way better at it than you your first go around, so you will likely get thrashed in all your games. this could, understandably, be a bit of a turn off to a new player. the duel decks thing is kinda nice if you already have a friend who is in the same boat as you: if you go in on one together, you each start off with a deck and a ready opponent.
  23. wasn't aware of that, but still doesn't mean he has burned any of it. if anyone could find another way to get allomancy, it would be hoid
  24. also, presumably lerasium could be used as a metalmind or a hemalurgical spike, so there are definitely other possible uses for it beyond just gaining allomancy. heck, maybe he just wanted it to study
