  1. I approve of this message.
  2. Most fans are of the opinion that you should read Bands first. I am one of those. Brandon calls it a minor spoiler, but is a darn big minor spoiler, and to have the biggest impact and maximum fun, you should read Bands first. Elsewhere, I've said that reading Secret History first would ruin your first read of Bands (personal opinion, mileage may vary)
  3. I liked it as well. It's kinda a "detective" novel in that there is a mystery involved, and further it involves a "dead City of the Gods". In that vein, it falls between Elantris and Perdido Street Station. Like Elantris, religion and occupation are themes, and there's some levity as well(though not as much). Like Perdido Street Station, there's a nice atmosphere of undefined dread, though a lot end up being explained and the writing isn't as stylistic or gritty.
  4. Man, I hate when HR or management does that. We get it, you exist! Now let us do our jobs!Later on, you might get a call asking why your projects are backed up. It's over the phone because for some reason, when they make the query in person they end up getting strangled or have paper weighs hurled at them.
  5. The Shard is full of communists!
  6. It means you're a communist!
  7. I'm going to finish some Kafka first, but after that I think I'll read City of Blades.
  8. Excellent catch! It was also commissioned by a Stefan Sauvage, and the last name seems like it is similar to Nikki Savage! Kinda lends credibility to the story and makes me wonder who or what those metal constructs are and when we'll see them.
  9. The Trial by Franz Kafka is the funniest book I've read in a while. My sides are aching from the laughter!

I really need to read some Kafka that is not The Metamorphosis. What has been putting me off his work is that so many of them are unfinished.

Apparently, very few of his works (all short stories) were published in his lifetime. He charged his executor to burn them upon his death, but he refused and published a few of them and handed down the other manuscripts to family who are now in court with Israel, I believe, for who owns them.

Yeah, it's a mess. The Trial is complete, though.

Ive heard, the first time from a gaming magazine if I remember correctly, not that I remember the context at all.

I could probably forgive them considering how dreamlike they are and dreams never have proper endings anyway.

Then I need to read The Trial. Probably after Bands.

  10. Like, I know, right? Oh..my..gaaaawd, Timothy is sooo hot... I never quite understood that myself. Luckily, it is not as common as one thought... At least, that's my sincere belief. Edited to add this "relevant" video
  11. But of course! Only the best roasted dwarf for our favourite Aussie!
  12. Don't forget that MeLaan is totes transgender.Curse Sanderson and his liberal ways! It's not enough the lefties ruined movies, they have to ruin genre fiction, too!
  13. Bake and toast em, fry and roast them, till beards blaze and eyes glaze; till hair smells and skins crack, fat melts and bones black in cinder lies beneath the sky to light the night for our delight? We are talking about dwarves in fir trees, right?
  14. It would ruin the experience of reading Bands for the first time, I believe.
  15. That's what happens when you lose your religion...you end up in a corner, you end up in a spot...light and...oh no, I've said too much!
  16. Hmm...looks like I'm about the same as Twi. Which is interesting because the last time I took this test a few years back, I was almost at the center with a slight shift to the right.
  17. Even if he couldn't attack, that's not the same as defending (or teaching or sparring). And, you also assume the limitation was not self imposed. Though your point makes me wonder: when did Hoid get this limitation?
  18. Yeah, he is focused on what he wants. The other thing to remember is he tried to get around Kelsier first, but Kelsier attacked (Hoid would later complement him on getting the drop on him, making me think he did not expect Kelsier to be able to intercept him). Hoid was also considerably attacked before he fought back, so he seemed to be just reacting to an obstacle that he had to get past. Hoid might actually follow something like the Oath of Peace from the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, which reads: Do not hurt where holding is enough; do not wound where hurting is enough; do not maim where wounding is enough; and kill not where maiming is enough; the greatest warrior is one who does not need to kill. So Hoid, based on his code or upbringing, may not be able to flat out murder someone or participate in random brawls, but if he is pushed against a wall with no other options, he will do what needs to be done.
  19. It was merely all right. A little more fun than watching paint dry
  20. Did they have to make Captain America look like the Black Knight, though? A very minor gripe though, those were pretty awesome.
  21. We got a flipping Purloined Letter deal going on here, hiding things in plain sight by being so casual and flippant! I also love that Kelsier never made it past book 10 of WoT, much like myself. Seems like great minds, be they fictional or real, think alike
  22. Part 6 is for Harmony, I believe. Edit to add the supporting post from this very Shard! http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/51915-does-anyone-have-the-symbol-for-harmony/?p=381214
  23. At that point, though, we are dealing with Elantrians that are thousands of years old... assuming there were Elantrians before Devotion and Dominion were shattered. (since I'm under the impression that the Aonic migration occurred after the Splintering. Sure, the city was there before hand, but we seem to have no indication of pre-Aonic Elantrians ever existing or still existing). And, the use of "Merciful Domi" also implies a much more recent Elantrian since Shu-Koreth was established in Arelon after we have the Aonic Elantrians.
  24. I believe that Mistborn takes place hundreds of years after Elantris, though not thousands. So it might be safe to say that these Elantrians come after the events of Elantris. Of course, they are also all bald as well, which is strange and seems to imply they might be pre-Reod Elantrians that may have to drink Investure to keep the madness at bay. One reason to think this (soft and speculative though the reason may be) is that Gallardon does not have the same appearance as these Elantrians do in the Way of Kings. I think it is safe to say that they found out that Preservation was dying a long time ago, and that the fortress was built there for the purpose of keeping an eye on it so that they could rush in and grab the Shard and take it back to Sel for whatever reason (I imagine the reason evolved from something to do with fixing the madness that is Selian magic to fixing the madness that was the Reod). Another reason to believe that these are Elantrians that suffered from the Reod is that they are refered to as being "dead but not dead". This makes me suspect that not only were they Elantrians that lived through the Reod, but that they've been away for a very long time since they have not recovered from it.
  25. I think his putting it in would have belabored the point a bit, and drawn attention away from the rest of the wedding. Besides, it's quite probable that the earring was lost during the train incident, though he may end up getting another one in the next book.
