  1. I don't have a lot to contribute except this: I thought the kidnapping of the women was so that they could try to breed a full Mistborn over time. Every one of them had Spook as their "Allomantic Adam", so to speak.
  2. Geez, and me speculating to myself about an "Investiture drive" for Scadrial FTL sounded far-fetched even to me. Now this answer comes along.
  3. They have very good reason to do so. We know first-hand that Odium/Rayse is fully intent on destroying everyone and everything in his path to being THE dominant power in the cosmere, and has succeeded in taking out at least four "rivals" of his, including the Shard by whom a majority of the Nahel spren were sired, being 'bits of his power, after all.' I'm rather curious what Nahel spren would say about Sja-anat, too, and whether that particular Unmade's powers do weird or crazy things to them and/or their bonded Radiant. EDIT RE: Bondsmiths. I always interpretted that epigraph as meaning it was related to the 'tertiary' ability that the Bondsmiths have (Shallan's is her Memory-taking/mnemonics). The question that's baking my noodle currently, is whether or not the Bondsmiths can literally make someone into a squire for a given Radiant (establish a bond between them). Since some Orders don't seem to have squires, that's probably a no, but I suddenly wondered this because Bridge Four has had considerable exposure to Dalinar and Kaladin both, but Shallan's deserters/militants have not, that we know of. This assumes Lightweavers have squires, of course, but if they do have squires, it makes me wonder why Shallan's haven't manifested as such yet, and the only factors I can see are: time and/or lack of proximity to Dalinar.
  4. Keep in mind that it's implied that in the previous Desolations, the Everstorm didn't exist at all. It's also not inconceivable that the Unmade, at least, can use a highstorm's Investment for replenishing their powers, in addition to the fact that the Voidbringers in general were said to have complete Stormlight retention, whereas humans and spheres have it gradually leak.
  5. Possible, but at the time Kaladin was also in a state where he couldn't even feel the Stormlight inside a sphere, during one of his failed attempts to suck it in after the bond frazzled. (p848 hardback) I'd rather question his ability to sense anything off from the perspective of supernatural, at that stage.
  6. Given the Death Rattle that introduces Dai-gonarthis, I take the term 'Fisher' to be quite metaphorical, with respect to the "fish". I'm thinking that, like Yelig-nar, Dai-gonarthis also feeds on human kind, but in a different manner. "He holds my sorrow and consumes it!" The best analogy I can think of is that Dai-gonarthis has powers like unto dementors from the Harry Potter universe, in terms of effects on people. Emotional destruction, in other words; draining away hope, valor, bravery, the will to live, and so forth.
  7. I don't think it was Moelach heading to Stormseat, as Taravangian's interlude suggests Team Diagram is pretty certain Moelach is going westbound. (I'm wagering Tukar as the destination, by the way.) While we don't know much about what Dai-gonarthis can do, though the Death Rattle hints at it, I still claim at least Sja-anat was involved in the Listener stormspren acquisition. We know next to nothing over how Venli was able to acquire thousands of stormspren, suggesting she has a source of it. I don't see how she's attracting Voidspren short of getting help from an Unmade who's said to be able to 'change' spren. I'm likely wrong, simply due to lack of information on the subject, but I still contend Moelach wasn't in the storm. Unmade? Yes. Which? Who knows? EDIT: I should also add, that if Gavilar had found that sphere, and it does behave as a 'broadcaster' for the Unmade, it would also explain why suddenly Nergaoul and Moelach's powers manifested around that time. The more likely reason, though, is that the Unmade woke up then, on account of Gavilar's expedition (finding this sphere?). I'd really like to know if the other four Unmade were causing their own havoc in other parts of the world at the same time, too. You'd think that information would have propagated into the east if so. It makes me wonder if just Nergaoul and Moelach woke up and/or returned to Roshar; that it's a gradual process as the Heralds returning was implied to be.
  8. Something I was contemplating: since Odium or "something like that" (the Unmade) Invested the sphere, suppose that it's basically acting like a 'beacon' for that Unmade's power (and perhaps does the same for the others)? Kind of like how we have wireless repeaters to enhance the range of a wireless network, that sphere could be doing the same thing, and it could explain why it's not losing any Investment, because the Unmade in question is (are?) actively using it remotely. In other words, it's broadcasting that particular Unmade's ability, which in this case I would assume to be Nergaoul's, given that the Thrill has been experienced on a very very long distance scale (the distance between the Shattered Plains and Vedenar is quite large). It would explain Dalinar feeling the Thrill strongly the night Gavilar died (close proximity to the source), as well as how a Desolation can affect the entire world to the point that a massive quantity of the population is dead: the Unmade have a '4G network' I really wish we knew just how far the Unmade such as Nergaoul and Moelach can influence by themselves, since Moelach seems to have a huge radius of influence, or else is (eek) omnipresent, to be able to affect Kharbranth and the Shattered Plains simultaneously.
  9. It's a little hard to quantify Harmony's Intent because it's full of subtle nuances that derive from both Ruin and Preservation. The conversation Wax had with Harmony hints a bit, though, but this is what I think it boils down to: Maintaining the status quo, which is to allow the world to change without being destroyed (technology is one example); but also preserve the world from excessive and destructive change*. This should make sense based on the plot of Alloy of Law. * (Spoilers from Alloy of Law)
  10. Really? I thought we saw this happen with Kaladin throughout the entirety of his time in Bridge Four. I don't see a functional difference between the deserters and Bridge Four's transformations, anyway. In both cases, the nascent Radiant in question took a group of people and they became something... better. The question that's baking my noodle is if the deserters will manifest as Shallan's squires. As for Illumination, I'm willing to double-down on Truthwatchers learning if not using it via a different method than Lightweavers. Shallan uses Memory taking and drawing as a focus (and hypothetically can progress beyond that), whereas Renarin could very well initially require a different aspect, such as in depth, hands-on analysis, "seeing" every angle of it. Adolin has implicitly described him as insightful and curious by nature (e.g. - knowing the differences between wines). It could be that both Lightweavers and Truthwatchers have to form a Spiritual connection to it, but something tells me Lightweavers, by definition, have a bit of an advantage with Illumination. At the very least, I could easily see Truthwatchers utilizing Illumination to 'play back' their apparent talent for precognition.
  11. My take on this: - Shallan's repressed Memories (capital intentional) of her past are basically getting in the way of her progression as a Lightweaver. We know from The Way of Kings that she has an actual, finite limit to her Memory taking, that it takes up some space in her head until she draws them out on paper.* Her speaking of difficult truths about herself -- in other words, admitting aspects of herself -- releases them from her psyche and lets the bond fill in. Definitely not beneficial if you're holding in trauma all this time and not letting it out, quite literally in this case. - By extension, the answer about Pattern being the implicit cause of her Memory ability is why I claim the Nahel spren emulate other traits the Heralds got, courtesy of Cultivation. If it ain't the Surges doin' it, and the Honorblades are what the spren primarily emulated, where did the tertiary, Order-specific abilities come from? *goes back to pointing emphatically at Cultivation* * I still assert that this ability is really establishing Connection to what she's seeing, thus why the illusions and drawing do so well at capturing the scene.
  12. The problem I'm having is trying to figure out what the Nightwatcher's Cognitive aspect is. If we take the Stormfather at face value regarding "personification of storms and the divine," what would that make the Nightwatcher?
  13. The Stormfather's a "bondspren" in the same way Sylphrena, an honorspren, described herself as a "spirit of oaths," and also she stated, "I bind things." I don't really think it's that odd, in other words, for a spren that's Honor's Cognitive Shadow, to be heavily Invested in binding/bonding. I do think it matters that it's Honor's Shard at work here, too. Had the Stormfather been Cultivation's Shadow, I'd have found it a little more weird.
  14. Precisely my point. Unless there's something I missed - and this is possible because sometimes it feels like I have a swiss cheese memory, full of holes - whoever said or claimed Hoid was human?
  15. So is this where I go off the tracks and think that Hoid is a Splinter of Adonalsium? I do mean Splinter, not Sliver.
  16. I'll just go in order: - Three wasn't an uncommon number for the size of the Bondsmiths, but there's nothing to suggest it's the limit, either. - I claim that they didn't abandon their Oaths, myself, but suicide would certainly be a violation of the (shared) First Ideal for the Radiants. They're choosing "death before life" there, rather than persevering. - I'm not sure what you mean here by "worth killing." - One of Dalinar's visions seems to suggest that monsters such as Midnight Essence only seem to appear during a Desolation, or thereabouts. However, this was "word of mouth" from the vision-him's wife, so she would have that second-hand at best. The presence or absence of Surgebinders hasn't really been conclusively linked to the cause of a Desolation. I rather doubt it, myself. Otherwise, why would the spren 'sense' one near and then return the Surges to humans?
  17. Sure, I'll buy that, but remember he asked for capacity he said. Since the Nightwatcher's alterations are apparently neurologically based (source), it could easily mean he gained in his capacity for compassion as well as his intellect, but the curse/side-effect was that he wasn't given the capacity for both at the same time, because that was his limit. It had to be one or the other, in other words, because he literally couldn't be given a higher capacity to support both simultaneously, so instead it was an inverse relationship that adds up to the same "total space". I'm not sure how to explain it better yet. As far as compassion goes, it leans heavily towards "Acting with honor," because it's rare that true compassion is a dishonorable thing. (ref. Lift's interlude and Second Ideal)
  18. My questions are probably RAFO bait, but... - Are the (named) Unmade physically present on Roshar outside of Desolations? That is, are they restricted to depart in the same way the Heralds are? - Once the Everstorm was summoned and crossed the continent, are all of the Unmade now awake and/or fully active (release of Midnight Essence, thunderclast sightings, etc.)? - Are there six Unmade, or hundreds? - Was there an external influence that caused the Recreance, or was it completely driven by human(oid)s (ie - no help in any form via Odium)? - Has Cultivation been influencing Roshar in any form (Cognitive shadows, Slivers, and Splinters count) since Honor's demise? - Since you said we've seen Cultivation's magic, did we see any active uses of it, or was it only how it affects people? - Does Voidbinding require a commitment in the way that a spren-bound Surgebinder does in order to use a given set of power(s)? - Did Lin Davar draw the eyes of the Unmade upon him? (He apparently has been influenced by Odium, and per another WoB, that apparently means Odium influenced him via the Unmade. I assume this is a 'yes', but I'm really hoping for 'how this happened'.) - Is it possible to power a fabrial by trapping a (mindless) Unmade in place of enslaving a spren? If so, do the abilities bestowed by the prisoner vary, or is it based on the gemstone, or both?
  19. IIRC, Kaladin has sent only one letter to his parents since leaving Hearthstone, to tell them that Tien had died.
  20. The real question is if and/or how her brothers will find out Shallan killed their mother in self defense.
  21. See, I always looked at it this way: Both Taravangian's intellect and compassion are exactly what he asked for, because both will be needed (especially compassion). They're both boons, in other words. The curse is that they don't happen at the same time.
  22. I could see a reckoning of sorts happen, but I don't think Roshone will be killed or tried rather than further discredited.
  23. See, here's the thing. If I want to be a conspiracy theorist about that WoB, it's got some wiggle room to it. What's stopping Gavilar from having had an Honor-based moment of precognition at the time of his death? We know it's possible, yet it's imperfect. We also don't know what the (Void?) sphere he possessed was about, either, whether Gavilar's been dabbling in Void arts or not. Plus, it's technically true that Gavilar was the one talking, and not 'someone else' (Moelach); the words came from his mouth. To put it differently: I just find it weird that Gavilar, who from what we know did not confide anything to Dalinar, suddenly is leaving his brother messages. If it was really meant for Amaram as another user posted, that 'brother' was not a familial reference but 'comrade in purpose', that's of course different.
  24. Just a random comment on Ivory, but: If Pattern, as a Cryptic, is considered a rough equivalent to a lighteyes in the Cognitive Realm, who is to say that Ivory isn't the same, if not equivalent to the spren form of royalty, or heavily involved with the "great ones of the spren" (diplomat, knight, attache, what have you)? Either way, without knowing what Jasnah's Ideals are as an Elsecaller, the most we can really say is that they're allowed to take lives without severing a bond, if they're in a dangerous situation. (Note that I'm not saying "self defense" here; we covered that. )
  25. Or, just because I want to bake people's noodles, it was a Death Rattle. We've seen similar "instructions" in the Death Rattles before, and they were fairly vague too. ("He must pick it up, the fallen title! ..." to name one.)
