  1. I would suggest going and having a look at the Useless Uses for Useful Powers thread, which has pages upon pages on stuff like this.
  2. Okay. I haven't been on here in a while, so I'll just answer a ton of questions now. RE The Emperor's Soul (can't find the specific post where the conversation began): I'll make it yellow. I think it works better. I'll get onto that. Thanks for the heads up. You're more than welcome to borrow it as far as I'm concerned. I did this for other Sanderfans, so it makes sense that they should be able to see it. (Sorry for the delay. I only just saw this.) Well, I'd put a loose tie before Elantris. It's not a "must-do" to read, but it helps a lot. (I can't really say more, or admins will start editing this post. ). SSFH I can understand, but I don't actually recall the particular character appearing in SSFH at all, so I probably wouldn't if it were me. If I did, I would also put a loose tie from SSFH to WoK when he was painting the bridgeman.) I don't recall any Roshar references though... So, unless someone/something changes my mind, that's a loose tie to Elantris. (It might become a firm tie though. I'm trying to work out how confusing it would be from a non-Elantris aware person.)
  3. We are. Reckoners isn't Cosmere...
  4. So, I was recently linked to the Amazon page for White Sand, and the blurb just had a massive name drop. So, it looks like we're going to see Khriss's origin story. Is anyone else really, really excited? Knowing a bit more about Khriss's personality might even tell us the motives of the (in-world) 17th Shard. EDIT: To the admins: This is OK to post, isn't it? It isn't supposed to be a massive secret until people see her name in the books?
  5. Possible. Remember that Stormlight Arc 1 takes place before Mistborn Era 2, and/or Hoid is not omnipotent so may not be aware of the shift of holders. Also, the Faceless Immortals are the kandra - I don't believe (besides Paalm) that any have sided with the Set. And I'm sure we have a WoB that Trell is principally Taldainish.
  6. Did that appear anywhere? I've seen the Isaac Stewart covers for Mistborn, and doesn't look familiar.
  7. Windows 10 is actually pretty good. The only major gripe I have is that the battery life shortened significantly after I updated. (Also, no Guest Account, which is weird, but not really a problem for me, seeing as it's only applicable once every few months anyway.)
  8. Hmmm... there's a 'test' option in BBCode. Let's see what it does. test EDIT: It seems to bold it. Don't know why that's called 'test' though.
  9. Some people (those who are willing to share) generally say (to a greater or lesser extent) where they're from. That way, if people want to get in touch with one another face to face (in a fanclub meetup or something), then it's easier to get the information out. Or just because people are socialites and like to tell others about their lives. Take your pick.
  10. Please put this in spoiler tags. I've read the book you're referencing, but others may not have.
  11. So, I've been wondering whether I should, and I've ended up starting an AMA (mostly so I can move conversations that I've derailed with personal opinions into here to prevent further derailing.) So... hi, I guess.
  12. Go Set a Watchman: the To Kill a Mockingbird sequel. My dad ( a huge TKaM fan) described it as 'a piece of trash that should never have been published, designed to generate a little cash to fill the publishers pockets. WARNING: MASSIVE POLITICAL NERDINESS AHEAD (the answers in the first 2 paragraphs, and then I basically jabbered about how strange the American political system is. Stop reading anytime unless you're a politics fan, or want to be one.) Does that answer your question (and give an accurate retelling of the chronicles of War and Peace)?
  13. You get a new Dark Alley member! I'm curious to see what happens if we just keep putting in what came out. You don't have to follow it if you don't want to, but I'd be curious. *inserts new Dark Alley member.*
  14. I wish your brother well, Stormgate. I... really don't know what else I can do.
  15. Yep. Seen that, got the T-Shirt. Apparently, she's off on an incredibly difficult doing 'work' (she does a part time job on Wednesdays, and a home-run business that generally goes for months without anything happening.) and 'everything else around the house' (except of course, the stuff she leaves for me, so nearly everything). And so she's all finished up by the time I get home, and she's watching TV. (For record, I once calculated that she had 20 hours of regular TV shows a week, plus movies, one-offs, etc.) So, when I see her doing nothing at all (ever), I'm just at the wrong place, wrong time. (She does have some stuff that she does. But there is no way that it takes her all day, every day. And, no mother, taking my grandmother for lunch at a cafe does not count as work, no matter how frustrating you insist that she (and everyone else) is.) Even assuming she's right, she finds other excuses in the form of her dud knee (which the doctor did an X-Ray scan of and found nothing, causing her to start going to a different doctor.) She can't do anything that involves 'moving about too much' or 'standing too long'. It turns out, moving about too much and 'standing too long' translate to 'moving' and 'standing'. Full stop. Which narrows down the list of 'possible chores' to... precisely zero. And, if I don't do (these are usually regurgitated lists that she spits out like a machine gun) everything she asks within 5 minutes of her asking, suddenly I'm 'uncaring', 'cruel', 'unappreciative'. Still, I'm 16 now. So, even if I go to Uni instead of immediately getting a full-time job, then I have a maximum of... 7-8 years left? Also Mestiv, that story is amazing.
  16. Twi, have your parents ever used the "You have it easy" excuse when you try talking to them about it? They have tried to tell me I was 'lucky' because they didn't use corporal punishment. I suspect they only set that limit because of that irritating thing called the law. Honestly, if that's the base for your standards, no wonder they consider themselves to be God reincarnate. Nearly anybody could be seen as virtuous with those standards. Twi, have you ever tried doing the 16 personalities test for your parents? I'd be curious to see how similar/otherwise they are to my parents, seeing as they seem similar in a lot of ways.
  17. I seem to recall a very similar argument about the "Lord of the Rings rips off Harry Potter" debate.Half the people said he was an idiot, the other half claimed it was satire.
  18. Drake, do you mind explaining why Autonomy + Endowment = Tribulation? It seems a bit strange. (Edit to avoid double posting) All of the 2 shard combos now have at least one suggestion! Maybe leave it open for new ideas for a couple days and then start trying to squish it down?
  19. Do you ever intend to change your name back to Dayblood?
  20. Did someone remove Isolation? I seem to recall it being there before, and it's not there now. If you disagree with something, please add what you think it is, start a conversation about it here, but don't delete the other one. EDIT: For reference, Isolation was Autonomy + something else (I can't remember which one exactly.)
  21. I've created a spreadsheet for this that anyone can edit. If you have a different idea for the same spot, leave both options there and put a slash between them. I'll go through and add the ones already suggested now. Unfortunately, it only works for double shards, not triple shards. EDIT: I've now set up a number of tables for the 3 shard guesses. Flick over the bottom tab to the one which has the words "Triple Shards", and you'll be able to access it.
  22. The Atheist: "I don't want to read Narnia. It's too Christian." The Christian: "I don't want to read Narnia. It's too Paganist." The Pagan: "I don't want to read Narnia. It's too... Atheist?" EDIT: I have no idea where I was going with that.
  23. I'm assuming this has to be satire. I fail to comprehend a person who actually believes this. For example: Thinking back, a friend of mine did something relatively similar at school once. Because we we so consistently told that "x doesn't mean x, it's secretly an allegory for y, isn't it obvious?" my friend typed up something nonsensical and then pretended it was homework from the teacher to write a paragraph about it's allegorical meaning. 20 minutes later of me and a few others scratching our heads after coming up with about 30 different interpretations, he gave in and told us. I'm guessing this is similar. Student gets fed up with teacher (or maybe priest in this case) talking about the religious allegories of Narnia, so writes a contrasting opinion for the fun of it to show how unprovable allegories really are.
