To have an invested bird that shows me my own possible deaths while being an electrum burner. Sandmaster with f-iron.

Thanks for the input. Of nothing else, this makes me realize that I need to re-read secret history...

Alright guys, I've been absent from the shard for a long time, so maybe this has been pointed out before and I missed it...but... I'm rereading mistborn (again...of course) and I noticed something I didn't before (again). When Elend goes to the koloss camp and randomly decides to pick a fight with one...he gets a little inspiration from out of nowhere "Only one way to win a knife fight against a guy with a sword... The thought, oddly, hadn't come from one of his trainers, or from Vin. He wasn't sure where it came from, but he trusted it. Close in tight, as fast as possible, and kill quickly." It never jumped out at me before, and maybe this comes up in secret history and I forgot, but could this be Kel or Leras giving a little timely advice to Elend in a time of need? My first thought was Leras, after all, even his divine avatar carries around a shank. But unless I'm mistaken, that's not how preservation works. Then I remembered that Kel gets in a few words from beyond the grave, but I don't remember this happening in secret history...also...if my memory of the time line is right, Kel was all bound up at the well during these events. So...did I make a good find...or am I just making stuff up? Thoughts?

Where's WalDo: The Kandra Worldhopper
hoidhunter replied to Kobold King's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I would also say that Mrall is too important of a character to be a hidden kandra...it's most likely someone who is good at staying in the background...someone who doesn't have to make decisions that influence the outcome of important events (over a long period of time). Even on Scadrail the inspector was only replaced long enough to put Wax into position. BTW...going way back in the thread...the kandra ritual of "ChanGarr" (if memory serves me) was the deal where they break all of your bones in front of everyone, and then lock you in a hole in the ground "forever" (until you go completely insane and lose the will to live). I realize that it sound like a kandra name...and maybe it's named after someone...but it could also be that kandra words just sound like that. -
I realize that this is far from super helpful...but I remember reading a WoB some time ago, where someone asked if the dark stuff going on with Shallan's family was somehow shard influenced...I don't remember the exact wording (and I'm not going to find it right now) but the answer was something like, "In a way...you are onto something." So, when comparing the seriously dark, sadistic behavior of other characters from around the cosmere to Nan Balat...I would guess...you are onto something there. But who knows...maybe I would even go so far as to add Bloody Tan to the list. He was a mortician before he turned serial killer and started embalming bodies for the sake of art...all the while ranting about how "someone moves us." Maybe he had been using his profession to mask something more sinister for some time before he finally went over the deep end. All that being said, torturing, murdering psychopaths just make good villains...

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)

I know this one was already done...but...I really want to address this... Granted, There are now 16 tons of perfectly fresh bananas on your lawn...they will be bad within days... -
Yeah...I could be wrong...but I got the impression that Dalinar thought he was the one writing on the walls during his visions, but Renarian was in the room or suite of rooms each time. There was even a scene that seemed to confirm that it was Dalinar, where he examines his own knife, and determines that it was his knife that was used to do the carvings...I believe the insinuation is that Renarian just used Dalinar's knife, then put it back. Which is also why I disagree (respectfully) with the "he just carries a rock to write with" theory. I think this has to be something else. (if anything) My pet theory is that his surge of progression works in a different way than we see with Lift and Ym...maybe instead of accelerating the growth of organic matter, he can somehow cause crem to coalesce into solid stone?
-
yeah...illumination certainly seems to have some sort clairvoyant kicker associated with it. Forgive me for going off topic, but it's something that has been bothering me, and I haven't been able to get solid input from anyone else. In the scene at the end of WoR, when Renarian and Shallan are in the oathgate together...Renarian all of a sudden has a rock in his hand that he slams into the wall and starts drawing zeros with...pretty unremarkable...except that Shallan remarks "where did he get a rock?" so the fact that he has one is unusual. He didn't have one before...and there aren't any lying around. Does Renarian have the ability to form stone?

Well hey, welcome to the shard anyway. Have an Upvote for the hard work!

Granted...it's waiting for you at my future house in Cincinnati...don't mind the mess (storming nightwatcher wrecked all of my stuff AND my roof!) Your bane...it's chili from Skyline...(I'm pretty sure it's made from ground up boot leather and roadkill) I wish for some of the afore mentioned chili...hey...I'd better get used to eating it sometime... -
theory Hoid's Plans Have Changed
hoidhunter replied to VirtuousTraveller's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yeah...especially after reading the sample chapters of LoP...I came to realize that Hoid may have been the originator of all of these story telling traditions...how that may have something to do with the Reod eludes me. That's not to say it isn't so. The little bit added to the end of the Elantris anniversary edition is particularly interesting in this regard. I would almost think that Hoid was meddling a little more into fixing the Roed. -
word. upvote.

If I remember correctly...a while ago, someone asked Brandon why he hasn't written and LGBT characters...he replied that he did, but it wasn't blatantly obvious...a certain ill tempered gunsmith. (this was back when AoL had just come out). While I realize that this statement alone does not mean that no other characters will ever be LGBT, it was the perfect opportunity for Brandon to address Jasnah's sexuality at that time, and he did not. However, I find it funny that people on this thread have pointed out that the stereotype of "strong willed, grouchy, independent woman must be gay" is a little messed up (and I agree) However...the character in a different story that has been confirmed as being gay is a strong willed, grouchy, independent woman...HA. All that being said...the part of this conversation that has turned toward who should Jasnah get together with is focusing on who is the most like her...but...I personally find that the old adage of opposites attract to be true in many successful couples that I have know. In truth, my wife and I have been together for almost 10 years now...and we are very different people. That's not to say that only people who are completely different can possibly stay together, and certainly, having some common interests really helps to form a bond in the first place, but being with someone who you agree with 100% of the time is boring. To me, part of what makes a good romantic pair, is that your personalities compliment one another. My wife is extremely detail oriented, plans things in advance (you should see the checklists!), she is very assertive and outspoken. For these reasons, a lot of people don't realize that she is also extremely sensitive, cares a lot about what other people think about her, she also cares a lot about other people, even strangers (I once saw her give a homeless man the socks off of her feet). I on the other hand, am a habitual procrastinator, believe in prioritizing my attention for the big issues, generally keep to myself when I'm around strangers and prefer to use as few words to express my point as possible. I generally couldn't care less what people think about me, especially if I don't know or don't like you, and while I am far from selfish or apathetic, I feel very strongly that taking care of yourself puts you in a better position to help other people in the long run. All that being said, we make a great couple, not because we are so similar that we get along, but because our differences compliment and compensate for each other. So...I guess what I'm saying is...if I were to pair Jasnah with someone...(I'm with Patrick Star) Lopen for sure. Jasnah is a very serious, severe woman...Lopen would help her to lighten up and laugh from time to time. He has zero drive or interest in personal accomplishment (aside from glowing) , leaving Jasnah completely unthreatened and with no desire to compete. He would be totally different from the noble types that she generally seems to find so off-putting. He is an almost insufferable optimist that Jasnah (who is burdened by fear and responsibility) would probably find inspiring. And he's got a big warm family that would welcome her with open arms, regardless of her dubious reputation among her fellow nobles.

Not to be picky...but I'm guessing that #3 is referring to Hoid...do we know for certain (WoB) this is how he has attained such a long life?

It's a bit of a reach...but I have a hunch that Kenton has had some impact on Scadrial...at least, one of the streets in Luthandel is called "Kenton St." If it were any other piece of literature, I would say that it's probably coincidental...but not with Sanderson. Bear in mind however, I'm not necessarily suggesting that Kenton world hopped to Scadrial, but maybe someone who did wanted him to be remembered.
-
Yeah...there is a WoB out there on theoryland somewhere that confirms that there is only one shard at work on Taldain...at least...as of White Sands. Someone even tried to get a little tricky and asked if there was a second shard somewhere in the solar system...the answers was no.

Oh...certainly no harm done...I'm always worried that (since text does not convey tone) one of my responses will be misunderstood as being angry or indignant...if you ever see any reply from me in the future it's never upset...the worst you can expect is sarcastic, or perhaps deliberately obtuse (strictly for egging on the easily offended). I realize that my example of egotism being tied to power is very difficult to prove, because the powerful will undoubtedly be full of themselves...are they full of themselves because they are powerful, or powerful because they are full of themselves??? Poor choice on my part.

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
hoidhunter replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted...Brandon is very upset with you for looting his personal library of all of his english hardcover books...he presses criminal charges. Your bane...at your trial, you have to tell the judge that a magical creature called the nightwatcher (who lives in one of Brandon's fictional stories) gave them to you because you wished for it. You end up in an insane asylum. I wish for a recording of your trial... -
What I really like about the idea...it's not just that you don't need to sleep, but with an unlimited storage of rest to tap, you would always, always feel perfectly well rested. I imagine that this would offer some other unexpected benefits...sleep is when your body does a lot of it's recovery from the days abuses...so constantly tapping wakefulness may keep you in a consistently above average state of health...but who knows...if nothing else...I might actually be able to finish one of the many literary projects I've started, and never finished...because I just don't have the time... By the way, someone with all of the feruchemical abilities is typically referred to as a full-feruchemist. Also, apparently, welcome to the shard. have an upvote, on the house. On a separate note, it's generally considered good etiquette not to make more than one post in a row, you can add to your previous posts by selecting the edit button on the bottom right of your old posts. Not a huge deal, people just tend to frown on multiple posts in a row...takes up space...you know...

It is actually both. "She gestured him over to three piles of sand. One was white, one black, and the final one a crystalline brownish color." pg. 689 / 1067, in my version of the document. Here's where I'm going with this. As we have briefly seen in stormlight archive, investiture can actually help certain organisms to grow and thrive, seemingly acting as a replacement or substitute for things that would ordinarily be required for live, like complex nutrients, etc. It is, after all, a little bit of the power of creation. So, we have a life form (the lichen that forms on sand) that seems to be the primary source of energy for the entire ecosystem of dayside. Sandlings either eat the lichen off of sand or other sandlings. And humans grow vegetables in sand that seems like it shouldn't be able to support nutritious crops, but sandling is also a staple of the human diet. One way or another, this lichen is the cornerstone of sustenance for life on dayside. It also appears to be invested. It also seems like this investment process may somehow resemble photosynthesis (as Yata has asserted). However, unlike most forms of life that we are familiar with, coming into contact with water actually causes it to lose the energy that it has been able to store. It releases investiture when it gets wet, or when it is mastered (which somehow combines it with the water from a sand masters body).......or maybe also when it is eaten??? (I know this is not a particularly organised string of thoughts...thanks for bearing with me.) So...some sandlings eat the lichen, using the investiture that the lichen has stored to provide metabolic energy, and using the physical makeup of the lichen as the building blocks for their own bodies. Some other sandlings eat other sandlings, transferring that metabolic energy to themselves, and once again using the physical makeup of the victim sandling's body to construct their own. It stands to reason that the larger sandlings get, the more they have to subsist on larger sandlings as prey, becoming the apex predators of the ecosystem (in deep sand anyway). However, the downside of sandlings being constructed almost entirely of this lichen (on a basic level) is that something about the physical makeup of all of these living things breaks down when exposed to water...even big, old sandlings that are somehow terken are vulnerable to harm from water. One of the things that seems counter intuitive to this line of thought, is that water doesn't dissolve the lichen, it simply forces it to expel it's stored investiture. ???????????????? EDIT: Just to add something...in numerology, "terken" means 1. I know it is seriously reaching...but the number 1 stands alone...or...is autonomous. EDIT: While I realize that I'm getting away from "Sand Mastery" and focusing more on the ecology of dayside...I find it interesting that sandlings appear to have a perfect metabolism (at least the herbivorous ones). That is to say, they ingest sand covered in lichen, and excrete sand with no lichen. No other substance seems to be generated as waste or byproduct of their bodily functions. This makes me wonder a lot more about the pneumatic nature of sandling anatomy.
-
Well totally...I wasn't actually suggesting that egotism was the determining factor for the natural strength of a sand master (Kenton is pretty arrogant, at least in his youth) I was merely giving an example of a possible alternative to "strength in sand mastery is tied to genetics." I'm also not saying that it is definitely NOT tied to genetics, just that we don't really have any reason to be sure one way or another.

Oh there totally are...but it's so much fun to talk about... If there are other metal born in the world I'm going with double bronze. As a parent who works a lot...never needing to sleep would be pretty boss. To top that off, I'm totally with Marsh on this one. Knowledge is power, being able to identify allomancers and pick out details about how they are using their powers would be hugely advantageous in a world of metalborn. If there are not other allomancers, or even, not very many at all...I would go with allomantic pewter and feruchemical gold. While it's a little unimaginative, I love the idea of being a pewterarm. Combine the resistance to pain, fatigue, and physical damage, with the ability to quickly recover from injuries that F-gold grants...and you're a powerhouse. I also have a head-canon hunch that a thug would be able to store health much more quickly than your average person.
