That sounds good, though it's been ages since I've actually written any combat scenes (I don't particularly count the earlier one in this thread), so I'll try to find time to get in some practice

Pirates of the Caribbean?

I think you've misunderstood the chart. Navybrandt was following the format used for the Discworld series, as seen above in the OP by TheYoungBard. The only lines that mandate a reading order are the solid lines. Dashed lines indicate that the first book contains characters/events/ideas that you will want to know if you wish to fully enjoy the second book. So, using Warbreaker and WoR as an example, navybrandt's graphic states that to read WoR, you need to read WoK first, and it's also a good idea to have read Warbreaker. You could argue inconsequential stories for a number of the novels. Spoilers below for various Cosmere novels. As you say though, this point is debatable.

There is a term, though I don't know what it is. However, in an actual debate of rigor, you'd also have the burden of proof that Y could not happen so long that X is true. If you can't prove that, your argument would be moot, technically.

Kobold, would you mind adding the link to the pony creator to the Pony Vault post in the Easter Egg thread? I might mess around with it when I'm bored at work.

1) About a year and a half ago (so take this as you will), I took a course called Transport Phenomena (Yay Chemical Engineering!), in which we rigorously examined the micro transfer of mass, energy, and momentum (whereas a macro examination is essentially the Thermodynamics and Mass & Energy Balance courses). If I am recalling correctly, and I can look into this if we'd like to discuss further, the equations treated the transfer through a membrane as instant. If a unit of mass passes through a wall at time t=1, the system which it left is one unit of mass less at that time t=1, and not t=2. Again, if I am recalling correctly, the same was true for energy, though if it were different we'd need to define stormlight, and probably investiture in general. Let me know if we'd like to continue this discussion, and I'll crack open the text book and possibly my notes too. 2) As you've noted, there is precedent for both possibilities, and as such I see a discussion of the topic to be fruitless at this point in time. It is interesting that it's not more clear cut. Vin describes holding the mists near identically to how Szeth describes holding stormlight. Do her abilities get enhanced without her fueling Pewter powers with it? I don't recall such a description, but that is likely the easiest way to tell, whether Vin comments on it, since Allomancy already provides a means of enhancing oneself.

All right, it's been a full year since I've performed rigorous math of any kind, so bear with me if I make any statements that seem obviously wrong. The inner engineer/mathematician in me wants to agree with Gargoyle here, in that you're equation should be trying to identify S(t) and not S(t+1). Stormlight transfers seems to be near instant, and so the loss/gain would affect the current instance of time, not the next instance. We would need to know the mechanics of loss of stormlight though. Is it rendered unusable the moment it passes through the membrane that is the skin, or is it unusable at some other point in time? This seems like something that would be up for debate, and I'm not sure I have the correct mental image of the mechanism as we know it currently. Not that this would have any real effect on your equation due to each of the terms being added/subtracted, but I have a feeling N(t)=0. From my readings of the novels, I've understood the enhancements, as you've named them, are a passive effect of holding stormlight, and not a function that consumes the resource. As far as efficiency of use, I think your I(t) term would cover both the differences between oath levels, as well as using an Honorblade versus being a Radiant. A (relatively) simple coefficient would likely explain such differences in comparison to the base case of being a full Radiant. I say relatively simple, but the coefficient could be an equation of some kind. Of course, perhaps you are right an instead this coefficient must be applied to multiple terms, and as such can be factored out to form this Z or Z(t) you mention.

Awesome graphic navybrandt! Things you left out that are not currently necessary include Era 4 Mistborn, the Cosmere YA novel that's stored somewhere in Brandon's coppermind, and the White Sand graphic novels. Also, as a bit of feedback, I'd say The Emperor's Soul is a mandatory read, and should have a solid line connecting it to Elantris, or potentially even be a separate entry unto itself like the short stories at the bottom. The amount of information regarding Realmatics held within tES is astounding in comparison to all the other works released (except for maybe WoR). Otherwise, this is an excellent graphic!

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Blaze1616 replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
I woke up this morning with a headache. Not a blisteringly painful one, but a dull, lingering one. The pain tends to fade when I don't move, but when I do it flares back up. The worst part, though, is my body's reaction to this type of headache, which is always to get drowsy. So here I am, at work, struggling to not fall asleep. Ugh...is it time to go home yet? -
Then it sounds like we're approaching the perfect time of year for your snacking habits!

Heck yes! You know what goes great with that? Some maple syrup. Yum! Just be sure to keep the ratio of syrup to peanut butter in favor of the peanut butter.

HOLY CRAP THERE IS ONE IN MICHIGAN!!!!!!11!!!!!!1111111! I'll be there.

So the classifications are about abilities, and not about "strength" or "usefulness". Illusion would be classified under two different typings, I would think, based on the mechanism used. One mechanism is the classic style of Illusion: creating images in other's minds. This would belong with mind control. The other type is similar to Lightweaving: the bending of light to create images. I'd say this is Type C, which should probably be renamed to "Manipulation" rather than "Moving".

There's apparently a dance studio in my city called "Dancer's Edge Studio". I think I'll need to investigate more closely to see if they're hiding any...bright...secrets... -
Edgedancer hit the major points, but also consider reading some of the pinned topics of the Reckoners sub forum, particularly Rules and Ettiquette, Oregon Easter Eggs if you want to understand many of the jokes thrown around in these Question threads, and What Is Free Form Role-Playing if you've never partaken in one of these.

Prime Invincibility and Steelheart [Firefight spoilers]
Blaze1616 replied to Quiver's topic in The Reckoners
From how I understand it, passive powers do not trigger the corruption, or at the very least only add the the corruption when they are needed. For example, in the Steelheart prologue, when Steelheart shows up he's not in a furious fit of rage. He doesn't seem to be under a lot of the corruption's influence at the time. A theory I've had for some time now is that there are no passive powers, and instead there are manually activated powers, and automatically activated powers. If this were the case, Steelheart's skin would only be indestructible when under the influence of something that would destroy it to some degree. Likewise, Obliteration's teleportation only activates when he's in danger. I haven't put much thought into this though, so there might be something blatant that I'm missing. -

Do the things he eats get expelled in the normal way? Eating in one bite means they suffer a terribly and agonizingly slow death in his stomach if that's the case.

I personally felt Steelheart was better, but really for only one reason: the attitude towards Epics. In Steelheart Sanderson established Epics as gods, which they are given their superpowers. The more powerful ones were something to be scared of, mythical creatures with untold strength that would kill you for smirking the wrong way. In Firefight, though, they're just people with powers; the entire casts' outlook towards Epics is so much more bland. And before you go saying that David's, Tia's, and Prof's outlooks should have been more mellow due to facing down the big baddies in Newcago (which I agree with), I'd like to remind you that the Reckoners in Babilar were very mellow about it too. In the end I prefer the former to the latter.

Heralds have been stuck to the Greater Roshar system for 4,500 years. There's a WoB stating such...somewhere. Also, did I miss something? Since when were the Heralds non-Rosharan?
-
Hey folks. I'm wanting to cite the WoB's that Brandon supplied to my questions on the current reddit AMA, though given they were answered yesterday I don't expect them to hit Theoryland for some time. Should I simply cite directly to reddit, or is there another method? I guess I'm asking what's preferred?

Clockwork Orange, one of my favorite pieces of classic literature. If you have not read it, do so now. Why haven't you left yet? Edit: Even if this is wrong, you should be reading Clockwork Orange, and not my post.

I'm not actually sure. I would think so, but I don't know enough about "data" to know if it uses radio waves, though I presume it does. I'll have to research it, I suppose, though I was under the impression that mobile's were more like regular phones, not smart phones. Edit: Confirmation achieved. Data is transmitted through radio waves. Huzzah!
