  1. Most women that arent rich and pampered just wear a glove because they still need to work for a living and need both hands. The flip side is also true, men arent required to use both hands for tasks they can complete with one; there on one-handed fighting styles, etc. As an aside, the characters even mention that a woman wrote Arts and Majesty, and how convenient it was that the feminine Arts were things light music and art and all these nice leisure pursuits and she kind of left men with all the more sweaty things she didnt enjoy.
  2. Awesome! I look forward to seeing what you come up with. One question on Onyx: Is there a way to drain Onyx before it explodes, to reuse it? If not, does that mean an OnyxBorn would have a lifetime max they can counter before they explode, or would they have some specific mechanism to bleed it off, maybe because it's still a Life Support System?
  3. If nothing else, the Oathgate Spren spoke chull if they are still Loyal to Honor and doing as he instructed (since He was apparently the one that banned Shadesmar travel through them). So Honor could probably just order them to do things and counter any effects of the corruption that way, thought he'd probably also be able to simply Purge it directly by the power of Shardic Awesome.
  4. In almost all practical matters, quite a bit. At least as much difference between Light and Electromagnetism, anyway. He's not trying to break it all the way down to the four Fundamental forces or anything. If is helps, the easiest dividing line is that heat is more molecular vibration, while traditional Kinetic energy would direct physical Forces being applied to points or moving whole object in uniform vectors.
  5. Precisely my point.
  6. True, but the downside of that is that maintaining a low-level burn like that is going to lead to Savantism.
  7. Personally I dont think so for a couple reasons. Permitted is certainly possible, but the realmic function of Spren in Gems is a fundamental part of the Rosharan Gemheart ecology that predated humans and even (potentially) the Shards arrival. As far as whether it was permitted to trap spren in fabrials, I think they'd be fine wiht it so long as you were talking about the non-Sapient spren species that they view as animals. Syl mentioned that her aunt goes on hunts for some species, and none of the sapient spren have express the same distaste that they seem to universally feel about dead shardbaldes. I think it's the cultural equivalent of wearing Leather.
  8. Fabrials seem to be the only thing that cares about Gem type/Essence. Heliodor=Flesh and Topaz=Bone. Frankly Im surprised that it doesnt also need a Ruby for Blood. EDIT: beat me by half a second!
  9. As a Series, Mind-blowing Twist and Awesome action definitely happen. But if you are looking for it to be in the Sanderson style in any particular way, it just plain won't be. Robert Jordan's writing, while I liked it, is a different thing than Sanderson's. Even the three Sanderson wrote to complete the series were written to be loyal to the Jordan's intent and style rather than injecting his own. As far as Wheel of Time itself: Yes Eye of the World gets better (in my opinion), much like LotR, things start off kinda slow in the first half of the first book, but soon get rolling. Eventually it does slow WAAAAY down as the character and storylines diverge, to the point where you may go multiple books without seeing some of the original Main Characters (this is probably my biggest complaint about the series). But even then, it's a wild ride with tons of twists and turns, major developments and crushing defeats and all the things you can hope for in Epic Fantasy.
  10. I dont want to call it Resonance, just because that's a specific cosmere term with it's own implications and limitations, and I dont thing what Dalinar did would technically qualify. So, just calling them Surge Combinations, I see a bunch of possibilities, and I fully expect Fabrial tech to start taking advantage of some of these. Dalinar was able to Connect Shallan to the Stormfather, which let her make an Illusion based on his senses. He can probably make similar Connections to other Sensory sources, with the coolest offhand being if Dalinar Connected her to Renarin's Lightweaving so that everyone was able to see his Prophetic Stained Glass Windows. Alternatively he might be able to reverse it and project Illusions (Or even ReGrowth for something truly EPIC) through the Storm. Likely some of the larger fractal formations in the world (Windblades, Shattered Plains, etc) were a combination of Division (which alone can make those fractal forms) along with some Power amplification (that seems to be Bondsmiths bread & butter). Honorable Mention: Not sure this is the same thing, but I think the best and most complex Fabrials will require Soulcasting. Rather than trapping a Spren in a Gem and making a mechanical device to manipulate it, I think they need to use Soulcasting to Create an Object that see's itself as 100% THAT Fabrial, whose whole Cognitive Self is devoted to the fabrial's Purpose. This is how I think the Oathgates were made.
  11. Just in case you havent yet, be sure to read Sanderson's Laws of Magic, it will help a lot with determining how and where to develop any magic system. My initial thoughts/questions are about the "elements": Are those 4+1 elements (thermal, kinetic, light, electromagnetism, and "Pure Scelce") the entire total, or are they just what has been developed so far? Is it possible for somebody to discover how to make a Gravity Emerald or some such? Is Onyx the only gem that physically changes Size? Does Onyx have the same variability by Size, Cut, Quality, etc or is it a flat x3? Could a Person be born with an Onyx based ability (by the power of Plot)? When you say "Conductive Materials" does that differ by energy type? As in do you need Prisms and/fiber-optics for light, but metal Wires for Electricity, and something like a steam system for Thermal (these can be fun and very steampunky), and clockworks for Kinetic? Or are is that defaulting to electrically conductive metals. Among the Scelsi, does the type of gem/power breed true, or is only the overall ability hereditary but random for each individual? Among the scec’ar, how does their magic use and/or philosophy differ by being native to it? Setting Questions: How much development do you have on the setting? Are you thinking Medieval Society, Victorian steampunk, Modern, Post-apocalyptic, etc? How are race relations between Humans and Scec'ar? How to the Scelsi interact and view the Mages? Are they the mage's leaders? Rivals? How common-place are these magics to the average citizen? Are these basically reserved as Military resources, or will there be Ruby Refrigerators and Diamond streetlights and whatnot in the average places?
  12. Building a Bigger one will have the normal limitations of any other Capacity Expansion Project, which is to say that at some point you would need to take the existing one off line to switch over to the new one. The driver in this case is that you would need to erase the smaller Rao symbol before you could complete the bigger one, and we've seen that there can dramatic consequences of in the interim, thought just knowing that it's coming and how to fix it will make a huge difference. Alternative: Is there any reason that they couldnt just make a Second Elantris? Or wait, what about FOUR more, so the original is at the center and the other expand out from the cardinal directions? Would this increase the overall Range of AonDor? Would this increase the apparent hard population max on Elantrians in existence?
  13. oops, Sorry, Im apparently playing in too many casting threads.
  14. We chased this thought in circles about a year ago. I was originally of the opinion that it could work, but there was enough WOB about the limits of and changes that occur with Spikes that I was convinced otherwise. That doesnt mean you will too, but it's worth the read:
  15. Oh sure they will claim it all day long regardles, but if a Skaa were to confirm it they would only do so grudgingly, and likely considered a matter of survival.
  16. Interesting Idea! If that were true, that the Lerasium/Base metal alloys might make a corresponding Mistings AND provide some other Enhancement, that's something I never considered. Was there any indication in Era1 that those Lerasium Misting Bloodlines were also known for any particualr enhancement (naturally increased strength, etc.)?
  17. Occam's Razor answer is that he'd already sworn the Ideal but simply didnt himself realize that the 3rd was the Gate to a Blade, so it just didnt occur to him to ask until a real need arose.
  18. So THAAAAT's how you make a Feruchemist! Get Lerasium, get a Feruchemist to store a little of everything, Burn it for the permanent Spiritweb Reconfiguration with the Feruchemical frequency.
  19. True, but Godmetals and their Alloys have always been considered outside the "base' 16. Im thinking more oddballs like Malatium, but with lerasium. And if we assume that entry in the chart is correct, then there basically has to be more viable lerasium alloys, since it has more effects than making mistings, and we know that;s what alloys of the base metals will do.
  20. I still dont have an answer for why a broken city broke all Elantrians if Elantrians predate the city, which they do per WOB. That's another puzzle that doesnt make sense to me, which I hope this discussion will inform on. But that's not what I was asking you about. I was asking what evidence you have that the original Elantrians that built the city were lacking in the specific traits you ststed. If we had evidence that they were different in any way than the modern ones that would go a long way to answering my question and proving your theory, so I am very curious; that would be fantastic new information.
  21. Why do you say that? Im not saying she's related to the current government, but if any of them are not currently ruled by the original Sunmaker's Son bloodline, she might be a scion of that ousted bloodline. Given that she married for political reasons, I highly doubt she has cut family ties, as families are generally the whole point with political marriage. She could have married for personal gain/survival rather than family motivations, but I never got the sense she was that much on her own, and I dont see Alethi Society being that accepting of a family-less person (who would have likely lost her Dahn status) as their princess.
  22. Not that we know of. The Highstorm, the investiture Cycle, and Stormlight in Gems all predate the Shards (and the Shattering of Adonalsium, for that matter). But also, Roshar is its own corner case, since it was intensionally created by adonalsium for some purpose, and currently has unnatural processes that will eventually wind down (fractal continent, unnatural planetary orbits). If I recall correctly the Ashyn magic was supposed to be based on some form of Surges, but I was pretty sure they werent the same 10
  23. You keep coming back to this, whichis more the dubious assumpion in my eyes. As far as I know we have zero information about them beyond confirmation that they used Aons and that they built the City, and that "Elantrians" is a label that applies to them. What evidence is there that they were any different than modern Elantrians, let alone lacking in those specific ways?
  24. I would expect something more permanent, but can't come up with anything
  25. Hmm, Good idea. I dont have it with me either, but it shouldnt take too long to check when I get home.
