  1. You need a shard ship Or a Shardsub, I guess, with reinforced Shardplate for hull, soulcasting for air (water to air?) , self-moving oars/propeller, some way to actually recharge during storm, or maybe even with the ability to "dive" into Spiritual like oversized Shardblade, taking people with it IIRC Wandersail went away from Origin, and was partially carried by storm until it broke on the island. The storms are weaker on that side, too Also, as Kelsier and Shai know well, Hoid's info is not to be trusted.
  2. Yes, the terms are very muddled these days. Sapience seems to mean wisdom more than ability to reason. There is also self-awareness (which is neither sentience nor sapience) and consciousness, and, to an extent, neither of these is a prerequisite for another, as far as I can tell. I would (as an aside) argue that you cannot separate logic and emotions, at least not cleanly, since emotions provide weights for decision making. Ahem Anyway, as far as I understand the terms, Nightblood is less sentient than human, but as sapient (he can reason quite fine, but his senses are very different from human, in particular, he doesn't perceive time well. By his very nature, he has to work with abstract concept of "evil"). Spen as Splinters are self-aware (as per WoB), but many of them are not sapient, and possibly not sentient either. Then again, as Kurk has noted, I doubt Brandon thought about a muddle of philosophical terms when he used them.
  3. Hmm... The lighteyes consider him less than bright: But I see what you mean. I was confused by Szeth calling him simpleminded:
  4. Personally, I would not be surprised if he was related to Ghostbloods somehow, and the spren were just there attracted to secrets abundant in environs. About Ghostbloods: well, he may have sent Kabsal to get the fabrial. Also, I am not sure how he is going to do power grab - he is considered a retard, in a medical sense, that is. What, he is going to tell people "Obey me now, I've killed your rulers?" Obviously, he has agents, and I think they might be ghostbloods. Sorry about rambling tone, I haven't slept today yet (Brandon stream, look up my Q&A outline, if you want)
  5. Indeed, though it still seems to be unlisted on the sidebar. It specifically says that it is the last one. The link in the appropriate thread works after login though
  6. I wonder, what would you call the twins in the following (purely theoretical) scenario: zygote starts from XXY, but on the first division separates into XX and XY, with one X shared, which cells then each grow into a separate person, a girl and a boy, respectively? Your setup implies external force, Darnam In closed system, there is no difference between directions (in relation to the outside), and a discrete multi-dimensional system can always be embedded in less-dimensional one, up to zero dimensions (a single data point). The complexity of even simple genetics would grow with generations, though - what would happen if one of your grandparents was from Roshar, another an Elantrian with MaiPon soulstamp on him at the moment of conception, third a Returned and fourth a Pewterarm Koloss half-blood?
  7. Well, we have the similar page on Coppermind, actually. So, as far as we know, fabrial as a machine is a set of one to several gems, some or all with spren trapped within, and each gem cut just so and infused with Stormlight, aligned in some setting that channels the effect to some extent. Apparently (from WoR chapter) the gems may need to be aligned just right for the thing to work, so the outer framework may be just for that, in some cases. (Imagines a giant robot fabrial shooting death rays, with half-shard armor plating) Also, as an aside, Cryptics, with patterns and apparent love of secrets for some reason remind me of this guy And the pattern seems to be a fractal.
  8. Erm, what is the difference between a gem in a setting(Soulcaster) and a gem held by metal framework? Isn't framework, well, a kind of setting? We don't even know what that framework looks like... Mind you, my own idea is that it was a proto-fabrial that had to be charged by KR (hence "keeping Regrowth" rather than "keeping Stormlight", that could probably be transferred from other stones (not sure about that))
  9. I think it is this quote: At least it definitely says soul damage, and we can assume that soul of something is in Spiritual Realm.
  10. In regards to liespren, I still think they are attracted to secrets, to truths unspoken, unaccepted or hidden under lies rather than lies themselves, hence a "Cryptic". Also, I hereby ship Jasnah and Ivory
  11. Another possibility is that all full Radiants can share a bit of abilities with their trained follower. (Which is not to say that it is probable, but it is a possibility)
  12. Thank you! A 3d model would be too complicated, sorry. For one thing, it would be to slow, since primitive models like this (atomic level) need a large resolution to be useful. The program takes a bmp file as input, for simplicity. It determines resolution and initial distribution of air/ water. Actually, that basin to the left of landmass is my attempt to make pure lake A slice/ silouette with aquifer would be very nice Edit : A maximum size is limited by PC memory, so, about 4 millions of pixels/ cells. Less if I ever get to implementing erosion.
  13. Those are wordpress IDs... I have some of them mapped to URL if you want them (attached). results_open.txt results_open1.txt
  14. By ID number, you mean like this? (3841= Annotation Warbreaker Chapter Forty-One)
  15. Well, my opinions on Stormlight are expressed in another thread, but as to what you have missed... This is rather important, I think: Note the difference between looking at Surgebinding (you can see patterns) and at metal (you cannot, it is too bright). As the quote above shows, the Steelpushes manifest as lines ("spears") of light, as well, and not as two disparate pieces. I think that the bubbles were just manifestations of Surgebinding, rather than Stormlight per se.
  16. Thank you! I was mostly drawing this idea from the following passage: That is just before the sphere recharges, and the face appears. It just seemed to me that that place/time was outside normal physical realm - Kaladin didn't even feel his wounds. Another thing just occurred to me: if a large part of the water is dragged off to be dispersed over mountains/rest of Roshar, it might not be like a tsunami per se, but like an extended stormwall, and flooded rivers.channels the following day. But I just don't have enough information to speculate with much probability (New Natanan is only mentioned only, and apparently doesn't have many known ways leading to it, and that seems to be the only settlement on that side that is marked on the map) Edit: apparently there is also a Dawn's shadow.
  17. You are correct in that (and if you look at the video, you'd note that it does push a lot of water on the shore, enough to drown the lower part). There are two things that may explain it, in part: We don't really know what the Highstorm looks like on the shore that points towards origin (New Natanan?), and most of Roshar seems to be shielded by the mountains on that side. The model is approximate, since I am not sure in what form the energy bleeds over from Spiritual. The area of transferred momentum is just one of possibilities for simple modeling. If you are interested, here is one of the earlier videos where it is modeled by a semi-transparent moving wall (and the water surface tension is much lower so it tends to evaporate ).
  18. Indeed, even with linear dispersion that is a long way. Also, the two opposing waves would meet about midway. They might cancel each other (at least on the physical side, and though the energy would remain, it should be much more dispersed), since they have opposite momenta, though that would imply that Roshar continent doesn't span over half the circumference of a planet... I am not sure if it does or not.
  19. Thank you! I should note, however, that in normal conditions the sea behind the Highstorm should start to calm down after a while. Since the simulation is in what is, essentially, a box, the energy doesn't have anywhere to go, though,
  20. It came to my attention that many people on the forums seem to consider the Highstorms to be a variation of the Earth storms, perhaps grander in scale, but operating under the same principles. Now, I cannot claim to understand the weather system well, and I have lived for the last 6 years in Tokyo, where I have been blessed by the mild weather for the duration. It seems to me, however, that a majority of the extreme weather system on Earth are of rotary nature (cyclones, hurricanes), that also go from regions of high pressure towards lower. I think that is incompatible with the descriptions of Highstorms that we have in WoK, considering the points below: (hidden for clarity) These properties, to me at least, seem to indicate a detonation or deflagration wave. Such waves are, however, driven by a layer of reaction that supplies energy to the front before it. In my opinion, such energy could be supplied, in this case, by the coupling between physical and spiritual realms. Therefore, my opinion is that the Highstorms form as follows: (hidden for clarity) But obviously, my opinion is worthless without some data to back it up. Therefore I invested some time to create a relatively simple simulation system to show what it would look like. I am not perfectly satisfied with the results, but Kurkistan has assured me that they would be of interest to some people. So, without further ado: Also, a video file, for those who would want to see the simulation results in motion. The details of the simulations, for those interested: Now, it is obvious that the model and the simulation are not perfect, therefore I would like some help, if that is possible. In particular: Could somebody with better artistic abilities than me draw a better slice of Roshar for simulation? Suggestions for better coupling than simply "drive matter sideways"? Any general notes or suggestions?
  21. To doublepost means to post in the same thread twice in a row, without somebody else posting in-between, like your first two posts. It is generally considered to be in bad taste on these forums, unless you are reanimating an old thread with some fresh info. Hm. I would agree that Investiture, normally, tends to exist in Spiritual Realm. Not always, though. Consider Atium/Lerasium, for example. As per WoB, they are mundane(?) metals(?) covered in Spiritual wrap, and the effect is easily detected on Physical realm in their properties. (Well, atium's). Also, I am still not convinced that metals from off-world can not be burned - IIRC, we only got RAFO on that particular question.
  22. Could you cite that, please? I don't remember clear confirmation. Um. They have different aspects. That is, the objects have different memories of their origins, and memories are part of the Cognitive aspect. So Scadrian iron thinks "I am a piece of Iron from Scadrial. I remember the touch of Ruin and Preservation. ", while Rosharian iron thinks "I am a piece of Rosharian Iron. I remember being a roast chicken, not so long ago." Also, applied Investiture can change cognitive aspect. First, Soulcasting is limited to a set of combinations and variations of Ten Essences (you can soulcast into water, which is not one of the Essences). Second, you don't need to Soulcast Investiture if you are adding it in raw form to begin with (though it would still be Rosharian in origin, you might be able to create an Invested object by soulcasting. Might). If you are implying that Investiture is the whole of Spiritual aspect, I disagree. For one thing, objects (like rocks) existed before Shards arrived on the corresponding planets. Also, gravity is Spiritual interaction in Cosmere, so it would need Spiritual aspect to work, so Spiritual aspects existed before Shards did (though they might be Adonalsium Investiture, I guess, if he made the whole of Cosmere to begin with) Edit: You could Soulcast object into fire and light. Unless that fire is the same temperature as human body, I would argue that it just became hotter. Also, could you please not doublepost so much?
  23. You know, it may come from being from another culture, but I am always surprised by the fact that, for some reason, many English hardcover books come without a picture on the cover, and have instead what you call a "dust jacket" (which I do, indeed, lose while reading a book, since it is not attached). Is there any reason for the publisher to not print the said picture on the bindings? Or at least have the name of the book embossed on? (I am genuinely curious) Also the picture is awesome But the giant cremling on the far ledge bothers me (I know it is supposed to be close and small, but I don't always see it) For some reason it seems, to my eyes, to have rather chordate body plan unlike the ones on the sketches.
  24. Of note is also the fact that Harding's Forgotten was at the moment spooked by gears and clearly visible on the floor, that is, largely outside the body, while the Nalizar's was only spotted inside the eyes, hidden from acid by the flesh it is wearing (presumably a Shadowblaze has similar relationship with a Rithmatist).
