Hrmm.. well, one of the things you could do is obscure what they think they're seeing. Roshar's gas giants are visible in the CR, if only faintly, so the CR seems to be able to hold things we can see, but not reach. For example, the CR of our solar system would probably have Jupiter in it, despite the lack of thinking life on it, because we can think of it. Make a small star that can be seen from a few planets, so it can feasibly have a CR presence. We've already got a small collection of stars that can be seen from multiple planets, so add one there. A Shard's presence is likely larger than a small star, but what about several stars? And them being viewed as a constellation could help explain away the land presence between the stars in the CR(from the bigger Shard presence). As a side topic, I feel that the "since Shardic power warps the CR, a Shard can just use their power to warp it back" argument doesn't hold up, but I'm having trouble explaining why. Your thoughts?

Top 10 theories going into Oathbringer

Is it just me that kinda wants them to not be important this time around? I don't mean the "make do without them" type, I mean "actually aren't useful this time around." Despite the number of "artifact of great power" stories in his works, he's done pretty well at subverting the tropes/our expectations, so we'll see -
I think it'd be useful to ask Brandon if a Shardblade would cut a metal ring(not a Metalmind, just a ring) in an Allomancer's stomach if they got sliced by a Shardblade. I say a ring just because it'd be clear as day whether or not it was cut, whereas metal flakes would be speculative. I know it's not the same as Kandra bones in terms of function, but it'd show whether it can solidify to cut things while fuzzed out inside a living thing.
-
See, this was something I was forced to reconsider last time this was discussed. Would it actually cut the bones, or would it phase through like it does when cutting human limbs? Where does that line get drawn? What makes a human different from a Kandra using a human body, and do those distinctions actually matter to Shardblades? I'll give you the brain injury point, even though I still don't get how the nerve damage works, since they eyes actually burn from a spine cut.

Hadn't considered that one before. hrmm... It might be able to do that, but I feel that the amount leaking out at any given time is paltry enough to be undetectable without being very close(one of the main issues with detecting Feruchemy was the low amount of power). Not to mention that it stops leaking when covered in blood or in the body. However, it could make detecting H-spike granted Feruchemy easier to detect, as the decay from Hemalurgy makes Feruchemy a "leaky tube." That leaking combined with normal storing might make it just a little bit louder. Clever. have an upvote
-
I think it'll have a similar issue to Feruchemy. With Hemalurgy, the only time power is actively moving is the moments of Spiking. So even if you were close enough to hear it, it'd be a momentary pop of some sort, and nothing more. I'd liken hearing Hemalurgy via Bronze Pulses to hearing a twig snap while walking in the forest. You know it happened, but you have the bare minimum of context clues to go on.
-
You've unknowingly made an assumption, and it's a dun sphere. Hemalurgy doesn't have "powers" in the way the others do. A Seeker would sense the same thing from a Steel Inquisitor as they would from a natural Mistborn. The Inquisitor steelpushes, Seeker detects Steel. Mistborn steelpushes, Seeker detects steel. The Spikes are passive. They give you access to a power, but they aren't actually doing anything. It's like Medallions. You could sense someone who was using a Medallion for Allomancy, but it would "sound" like Allomancy, because that is the power being used. Kandra and Koloss didn't give off Bronze-pulses, so i don't think the human attributes would either.

Top 10 theories going into Oathbringer
The One Who Connects replied to bdoble97's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, she gets an interlude during Oathbringer, so we'll both be happy until the next book. Now that you mention it though, I'm genuinely curious about what her Interlude will be about(and when). Her legs were shattered, so I don't expect her to have left the Reshi Isles unless it's been a while and she can walk/lean on somebody to walk again. I doubt her Larkin will go into a chrysalis until much later because natural life cycles, regardless of if my theory is right. I feel like this is still too early, but maybe Larkin to Lanceryn is a multi-stage process, so we witness an early-stage transformation during a Highstorm. It'd give us the new perspective of what Highstorms are like in the Reshi Isles, and perhaps set Rysn off on the path to discovering the Larkin/Lanceryn connection. Lanceryns are native to Aimia, so I don't expect we'll learn too much about them while in Reshi. The Lanceryn is thought to be extinct(after the Scouring of Aimia), few people would know about the Larkin/Lanceryn connection, so maybe we'll learn about Larkins themselves, separate from the Lanceryn aspect. We could learn more about Reshi culture and how Rysn is adapting to it, which could be interesting. We could have a little joke segment of her watering her grass and having her Larkin on her shoulder like a pirate's parrot Now that's an interesting(and wonderful) mental image.. Rysn, clad in Reshi garb, pot of grass in on hand, Larkin on her shoulder, gazing out at the horizon. -
Indeed.. As figuring out how our "Hide and Survive" Shard does it seems involved in the crux of your theory, I think this is still relevant enough to not require a new thread. Ok, so what do we know: Hiding and Surviving are only tangential to it's Intent, and the decision was a smart one. Wisdom maybe? You want Subtlety. The Intent may be irrelevant for our purposes here. There is a shard that is not on a planet. As the WoB speculates, this could be Autonomy and the Star, or it could be floating in space. I believe we have confirmation that this is not the remains of Ambition, but one of the 6 unknowns. There is an area of the CR that is an empty wasteland. (Could be nothing, could be everything) Convo after the WoB suspects Ashyn. I suspect this is what the "warped" CR around a Shard looks like when there isn't a planetary landscape That 4th detail that I'm usually missing. What we need to do: Figure out what the CR looks like when it is warped by the presence of a Shard. Debate how feasible various methods would be to duplicate this effect elsewhere. Debate how feasible various methods would be to hide this effect. Arrive at three conclusions: One each for the Survival Shard, Autonomy, and Taldain's Sun.

Hermalurgy Question: Any perceived differences from Era 1 to Era 2
The One Who Connects replied to OneNastyChull's question in Cosmere Q&A
Sort of..? It's more connection to Preservation, which may be related to Innate Investiture, but I cannot confirm or deny that. I do have this though: It's the best I've got -
Here's my guess on the "methods." The Question isn't terribly relevant, but the Answer gives us a little hint about finding Shards.

You should also check out Sheep, the arguable "other half" of fanart back in the day.

Since you brought it up. -
Ignoring the fact that Miles was a compounder, you can tap/burn in more places than you'd think. A Mistborn might accidentally burn her copper IUD, Sazed tapped his Metalminds that were embedded in his skin during the climax of WoA, Inquisitors can and have used their spikes as Metalminds, etc... I'm not sure about the limits to Allomancy, but I'm fairly sure that all Feruchemy needs is physical contact. So in your stomach should count. Oh hey, Sazed during the jailbreak of TFE did just that. He specifically says that "I took a hint from you, Mistress(Vin). I swallowed it."
-
I cannot speak to White Sand, but I always figured Miles had swallowed some small Goldminds so they couldn't be taken from him.

Have the WoB in Question. Spoilers for size because good grief
-
Have a WoB that gives us a small snippet into their interactions. (mostly because I finally found it again)

Top 10 theories going into Oathbringer
The One Who Connects replied to bdoble97's topic in Stormlight Archive
Oh good, it's not just me. Despite what we've seen with Chasmfiends and the Tai-Na, I still picture the Lanceryn as souring through the skies like a Skyeel, despite the logistics being... troublesome. -

Oh, his book... Never mind. I only remembered the "text will make it clear [..] fairly quickly who this person is" part. However, I remain in the He is Taln camp, but I'm expecting some sort of proviso attached to it, beyond just "madness." I thank you for the support, but I have to give the original credit to Maxal for convincing me that characters don't need to be KR if they have a niche of their own. The case in point was Navani and her Fabrial-Tech Arsenal(having her show up decked out for the climax of Book 8 would be an interesting twist too) With the Lanceryn WoB, I found a niche for her to occupy, so I applied the idea to Rysn. -

I'm saying his(bdoble97) statement sounded like he conflated a PoV character with a Flashback Character. Hence, "I think Adolin is important, even though he's not a PoV." I don't know a proper term for "used the wrong word," and it seemed more like he thought he used the right one(which I later learned is due to tiredness. Fair enough), so I used conflated. -
The Books are not necessary to understanding. They help you a lot(basic rundown of characters, magics, plot, etc..) but unless you are trying to avoid spoilers, the books are not a "100% must read" to be on here. You aren't dense, but I guarantee you missed vital information. We all did on our first few reads because we didn't know what details were "vital." No worries. If your confused about something, just ask. We can see your low post count below your icon, and we all understand what it was like to be new. You'll get answers. All else fails, just read through the older theories like I did and you'll start to catch on(because other people have been similarly confused and asked in the past) Helpful Links for Everybody to Have: The Coppermind: Wiki of all things Sanderson (already linked by Ammanas, but I'm being thorough) Theoryland: Database holding the WoBs from many Signings, Q&A's, and other events. Pagerunner's Database: Compendium of all things Brandon has posted on Reddit. Events and Signings: Topics containing audio/transcripts of all recent Signings, Q&A's, and other events. (a lot haven't made it onto Theoryland yet) WoP 2015: A collection of questions answered by Peter Ahlstrom. (Here b/c none of the rest of you seem to have it bookmarked ) WoP 2016: Small List, but it gets overlooked a lot. Arcanum: Fan-Made Database to replace Theoryland, set for release a little before Oathbringer comes out. The Annotations: Brandon's behind the scenes info-dumps about the stories, writing process, and fun tidbits. Honesty Time: I haven't read all the books. I haven't read The Emperor's Soul, Shadows of Self, Bands of Mourning, White Sands, I read Secret History separately and have never even opened Arcanum Unbounded. I haven't read any of his books recently. Oathbringer is gonna be the first of his books that I've read since Calamity came out back in Feb 2016. Go on and act all shocked about this.

Odds are he's conflated pov character with flashback character. When i see "important too the story even though not a PoV," I hear "big character, but not one of the Big 10"
