Names as shapers of people

Endowment isn't on Sel though. She's the Shard on Nalthis, which is the world of Warbreaker. The Shards on Sel are Devotion and Dominion. -
[OB] Hoid and the Shards of Adonalsium
The One Who Connects replied to Brightlord Brooding-Eyes's topic in Stormlight Archive
Subliminal Memory. Rayse(the vessel holding Odium) is part of the group of people who killed Adonalsium. Over the following 11.5 millennia, Rayse's personality may have been largely consumed by the sheer power of Odium, but some memories would still remain. Look at some of the Letters, and you'll see that several of the Shards still know who they're talking too. Hoid is afraid of what Odium would do if he found him, which only works if Odium still remembers who Hoid is. Etc... Edit: Clarification The Shards are simply chunks of Adonalsium's power. Power needs a mind to direct it. The Vessels were there when Adonalsium shattered, so they took up the Shards. Over time, they have become more like one being than two separate entities, which is evident when you look at Ruin & Honor.- 17 replies

I don't think that's how that works. Larkins appear to grow a little after consuming Investiture, so I think it's been used. You could steal the innate Investiture of the bird, but not much else.

Names as shapers of people
The One Who Connects replied to The Young Pyromancer's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
I think this is Brandon making fitting names for his characters more than it is something magical. I can't prove this, but I feel like he would've had more of the story in place before he came up with most of the Aon definitions. You're one of the first to make this connection in a long time(if at all), so good on you. -
Modern Society in AonDor
The One Who Connects replied to The One Who Connects's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
He's going off the "definitions." He made the same "Ien = wisdom" mistake Recneps made on Thursday. The words that Aon Daa represent are "power, energy." It's a reasonable enough assumption to make, and it's essentially the one that I made about Aon Rao(except I have the Ars Arcanum backing me up) 1. Maybe not. Aon Rao though... "In AonDor, Aon Rao serves as a power amplifier." 2. Sort-of. You could use a plate inscribed with Shao & specific modifiers so you could mass-produce plates, but I'm not certain you could use an Aon to inscribe an Aon onto something. 3. At present, Ien is healing. Aon Ene though... you aren't gonna be hitting Taravangian level, but you could probably get close to a Zinc Compounder. 4. Ire is "time, age." I'm not seeing the Taravangian connection here. 5. Unless you've got a magical method, Edo is already unbreakable. It draws power from the Dor to match whatever physical force it's up against. (You raise a valid question, albeit unintentionally. What would a stronger Edo shield do, if it's already unbreakable?) 6. No. "Boosting the Power of" is not the same as "Change the Ability of." Like StormingTexan said, it's the same thing here as it is with God Kings having children. Any of the Returned can do these things, but most of them don't know that they can, and none of them actually know how. The revelation that Denth was one of the Scholars too but doesn't look Returned is a hint that he's done the same as Vasher. And Lightsong's inability to do this is a hint that deep down, he does see himself as a Returned, despite what he may say.

[OB] Why is Axies not in Shadesmar?
The One Who Connects replied to Nashan’Elin's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well then that's on me misreading how the coppermind wrote it "Siah Aimians, who are characterized by deep blue nails and eyes, have been known to sculpt their bodies to temporarily suppress their senses (e.g. to avoid smelling foul odors), produce tattoo-like markings on their skin, or heal from injuries." I wrote that off as legends of the Sleepless. -
The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
The One Who Connects replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
An object is either inside the bubble, or it isn't. So it depends on where that line is drawn. The power cord would certainly be considered as inside the bubble, so the device could use all the remaining power inside the cord, but I don't think the wall socket would be inside the bubble, so I think there'd be a delay of some sort before power travels into the cord. Question could be augmented to ask if power could travel from an electric socket into a power cord if the cord is within the bubble and the socket isn't, but you appear to have done so later on. -
Nothing in the text or journal diagram contradict what I said either. You appear to be taking descriptions from Navani's PoV and ascribing meanings to them that aren't necessarily there. She says/thinks "The parapet wobbled its way upward. It acted as if it were being hoisted, though it had no support at all." You highlighted this portion, so you must see something important here. Given that we know the rising parapet is being supported by the (people pulling on the) other platform, all I'm seeing here is Brandon evoking "no strings on me"-esque imagery, to show that it is rising with no visible sources of lift(like a hoist, or the pulleys&ropes on the other platform) The first "unsupported" usage is about the other platform. "The only thing connecting it to the ground was a set of two pulleys and ropes, but those offered no support. That square, thick section of wood now hung in the air completely unsupported." The first sentence says it has no support from anything connecting it to the ground, and then the second sentence says it hung unsupported in the air, which to me is Brandon visually implying that nothing is connected to it from above either. I'm just not seeing anything magical in these sentences. So, my biggest problem with all that you are saying is this: I'm saying that the platforms only stay the way position 2 is drawn because that platform(the archer parapet) was heavier, and then it seems like you are both agreeing and disagreeing with me. At times, it feels like you are saying the equilibrium state(2) would be unchanged even if you removed the weight from that side of the scale, and it bothers me that I can't not read that. Take this snippet: Blue Text: The First sentence makes sense, since we're using a balance scale. The second sentence is what's getting me, as it feels like you are saying that neither platform would move upon activation, regardless of what their respective weights should be doing to the balance of the scale. Equilibrium is reached based on balancing things(It's in the definition of the word), and other than the weights, what else is there to balance? (This eventually led to something similar(and less succinct) to the "prepend" statement in Green Text, so skip to that and come back) Force is required to move the system from it's equilibrium, but force(gravity, in the form of weights) was required to make the equilibrium the way it was in Position 2. (See Diagram Below for More) Green Text is essentially Position 4 on your balance diagram, yes? (Both segments are shorter than they originally were, as some thoughts went nowhere, or just didn't work with the others.) Maybe I'm digging too deep and you needed to prepend Green Text with "all other things being unchanged," but the only reason that Position 2 is arranged the way it is is because of the weight. (Both Blue & Green Text also had these meandering bits of talk that led to this(to B & C respectively), but I'm summing it up with "Diagram Time") Look at the final stage of Navani's journal page, and imagine all those archers jumped off. If you then cut the rope, would you end up at Position C? This is where Green Text lost me, because it seems like you are saying they'd return to their initial state anyway, even though the balance has changed. Now look at Fabrial B. This is what the last sentence you wrote in Blue Text seems to imply would happen, rather than what would happen in Real Life.

[OB] Why is Axies not in Shadesmar?

Cognitive Control they may be, but dulling senses, removing bruising, clearing headaches? These feel like magical abilities with similarities to Tin,Gold&Pewter. Due to this comparison, I just don't see the lines connecting these things to webbed feet, removing noses, or the like. Your assumptions are jumping up a level of intensity in what the power can do, and I'm hesitant to agree. -

Otto's map has them a little under 100° apart, based on the number of Longitude Lines he used. But it's actually about 81° now, since with the advent of the OB map, we learned that the Rosharan Lat/Long lines aren't on the 360 system, but 400(presumably so that half the globe is 100 of their degrees in any direction, for the tens). The distinction is irrelevant for your post, but I like spreading knowledge. This seems like how I'd imagined it would be with the Spanreeds in the other thread. Up for Spanreed A translates into Up for Spanreed B, but since they have separate frames of reference, "Up" for one may appear to be "Down" (the whole Australia is upside down joke). What matters is that both objects move in the same "direction" compared to their point of reference. In this, we agree. I understand tying it down for actual use, since the weight of people on the raised tower would push it downwards if the lowered one wasn't tied/equally weighted down. I guess I'll have to reread that scene, but assuming both platforms weighed the same, shouldn't they middle out due to gravity? Post-Reread Thoughts: I may be right about this, since one platform appears to be heavier. "The wooden structure looked like the top of a siege tower that had been cut off and laid on the ground. Crenellations ringed it, and they'd set up dummies at those, the kinds that soldiers used for archery practice." They start the test with the Archer Platform on the ground, and the other platform raised. The archer platform has practice dummies on it, to simulate having people on it. As such, that platform weighs more, which prevents it from rising, and keeps the other platform from falling. As such, I'll disagree with your "Rest State" assumption. I hold that the platform didn't fall because the other platform was heavier, and couldn't rise. This inability to rise is then duplicated in the other position by tying down the lowered(and lighter) platform. When tied to the ground, it theoretically weighs as much as the object it's tied to(in this case, the planet itself) and thus weighs more. Indeed.

[OB] Why is Axies not in Shadesmar?
The One Who Connects replied to Nashan’Elin's topic in Stormlight Archive
I feel like you aren't seeing the same question as I tried to write. We know that Dysian Aimians can modify their body to a more extreme level, and we know that Siah Aimians are not composed of Hordelings. I'm wondering how limited that makes the Siah in terms of body mods, and I think it prevents them from doing what you were/are suggesting. The shadow might be something else, since it happens to Jasnah too, and I don't think she can do body modifications of any sort. Tattooing the skin, via magic or mundane methods, is something I'd consider on the very mild side of body modification. Look up some of the IRL people giving themselves horns, and you'll see why. -
Nohadon himself says a few things that imply Radiancy during Dalinar's Vision of him in Way of Kings. And there's also this, which might support the Bondsmith claim: If Nohadon's Book was the work upon which the Ideals were based on, then them adopting the symbol of his crown as the symbol of their redesigned organization seems reasonable too. Him being a Bondsmith would only help support that decision.

[OB] Hoid and the Shards of Adonalsium
The One Who Connects replied to Brightlord Brooding-Eyes's topic in Stormlight Archive
Not exactly, but you remember mostly right. The WoB doesn't really say anything though, a Chasmfiend could wander through this loophole with room to spare. As a note, I absolutely remember someone posting a non-paraphrased version of this at one point, but it's not in Arcanum, and the search function on this site is counter-intuitive so I'm having trouble finding it. (It's nothing special, just clearer time-gaps during Brandon's "uhh.. yes... yes, you could" bit) As for the loophole, "in any way" could be as little as knowing it was happening and not getting involved(which seems like an Autonomy thing to do).- 17 replies

Can he though? He's Siah, and we don't know where the line for Dysian's "more extreme" modifications is drawn. Suppressing the senses doesn't exactly seem like the same level as removing his nose, to me at least. Also, I must be missing what removing his nose/mouth has to do with land/liquid being inverted in the CR. What am I missing here? -
Thoughts and Questions About The Lord Ruler’s Power (and Spikes)
The One Who Connects replied to Fakeout's topic in Mistborn
I knew about the WOB, but all Brandon said is that the earring used to be a spike. Given the existence of Vin's earring, it doesn't really lock it down to formerly from an Inquisitor. But they explicitly say so in the book, so there's no misinterpreting that. Also explains why I didn't remember where that was from, so there's that. -
Thoughts and Questions About The Lord Ruler’s Power (and Spikes)
The One Who Connects replied to Fakeout's topic in Mistborn
There wasn't a misunderstanding. I typed that in response to your "spiritually stretched by ascending and thus have even greater capacity for lerasium" bit, saw the other piece, and lumped them together instead of typing something mostly similar twice. I could've written it better, but it happens. It rewrites your Spiritual DNA. (But you've made me curious.. would you have to have snapped to use Hemalurgically granted Allomancy..? I suppose the spike could contain a bit of snapped spiritweb from someone else.. hrmm...) Maybe? We know he whispered to him while he was holding the power of the well, which is why TLR knew how to make things with Hemalurgy, so it stands to reason that he could already talk to him in some capacity. I mean what I said in that I'm fairly certain people have stated this as largely accepted fact on the forums, and that's what I'm remembering. I personally think most of those spikes from the end of SH would have gone into making the Sovereign's body. He's talking about F-Nicrosil. Store and Compound a bunch of normal Investiture, and then you've essentially got a battery to shove extra power into your magics. You still need physical metal to burn for Medallion granted Allomancy. Medallions merely give you access to the powers. -
Thoughts and Questions About The Lord Ruler’s Power (and Spikes)
The One Who Connects replied to Fakeout's topic in Mistborn
TLR did not burn Lerasium for his Allomantic Strength, that was the Well. TLR rebuilt himself to be a powerful Allomancer, as strong as the power would let him. Vin didn't use the power to do anything, so that's why she remained normal. Taking up the power of the Well counts as temporarily ascending, by the way. This doesn't work on Lerasium. We've tried. His Bracers ... weren't(read the footnote). I think Pathian earrings are from melted down Inquisitor spikes, but I can't find a source on that. They still hold a very faint charge, which is all Harmony needs. Being a strong Allomancer isn't that fantastic of a feat. Living for 1,000 years is a fantastic feat. Being burned alive/beheaded/etc.. and continuing on like it's nothing is a fantastic feat. And while I'll agree that TLR probably didn't use Nicrosil, he knew a lot of things nobody knows. Medallions aren't just Nicrosil, you know. The Bands were made from all 16 Metals. As for your compounding talk, I'll direct you back to an old topic. -
[OB] Adolin-Shallan-Kaladin Discussion
The One Who Connects replied to Harbour's topic in Stormlight Archive
Characters can have different purposes or the purpose they have can change, you know. Characters can have multiple purposes too, Lirigon. This is Brandon we're talking about In my opinion Ailvara, "non-Radiant" is not specific enough to be a narrative purpose. Navani and Adolin are both non-Radiants, but I see their purposes as quite different. The squires technically count as "not Radiants" too, but I wouldn't consider their narrative purpose to be the same as the aforementioned Kholins. Would you? -
Meanwhile I pronounce it like this: reh ("eh" with an "r," basically) chef - fear (imagine them combined with only one "f")

[OB] Why is Axies not in Shadesmar?
The One Who Connects replied to Nashan’Elin's topic in Stormlight Archive
So he can probably skip the sea, but he'll still have to "climb" the Purelake and swim through part of the mountain range? It's still a moderately lengthy trip, and both -Storms should still exist in the CR. Knowing Brandon, he probably got there right after the book ended, and that's gonna be our "thing that happened" during that 1 year gap -
[OB] Why is Axies not in Shadesmar?
The One Who Connects replied to Nashan’Elin's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, last we saw him, he was hanging upside down from a shell in the Reshi Isles, correct? Depending on where he was, the closest Oathgate would be Kholinar(which is a no-go) or Kurth/Rall Elorim, neither of which are unlocked yet. That leaves the manual method of travel: sailing the Reshi Sea, crossing the Purelake, and traversing a mountain range, all while dealing with both High- and Ever-storms. You can forgive me for assuming that it's a long trip. -
I have to agree. Nalan's Betrayal holds impact since he's a Herald, so the same reasoning should apply for news of Jezrien's Death. More so, since the "Kadasix of Kings" was/is the big name deity in a few of those foreign religions(the Makabaki, for example). Szeth being bound to Dalinar's word is gonna go one of four ways. 1) Nalan(Skybreaker) betrayal is revealed, and Szeth's decision to stay puts him in a positive light. 2) Taravangian's actions are revealed, and outrage shifts towards him, leaving Szeth in the background. 3) Neither are revealed, and suspicion shifts to Dalinar(or Szeth's radiance serves to tarnish people's view of them) 4) Both are revealed, and Szeth gets shoved even further into the background as people have two bigger targets to focus their rage at. Renarin's Corrupted Spren is gonna potentially shine a negative light on the Radiant Reputation, and Kholin refusal to act is gonna smack of favoritism, but beyond that? I don't see this making that big of waves until we know more about what the corruption entails. Jezrien's death mentioned above, as is Nalan's betrayal. I'd put them roughly equal, since Jezrien being a bigger deal is balanced out by the tarnish on the Radiant Reputation from the Skybreaker betrayal. Dalinar's Ascension... not sure how this one'll play out. Taravangian's actions mentioned in the Szeth bit. Dalinar's deal with the metaphorical devil is gonna be a big deal if word gets out.
