Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!
Kasimir replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
So, on the job woes front: I'm dealing with this really picky client and I have been since about two months ago. The case has dragged that long and despite my having a contract, the company's not actually allowing me to quit, even after this case -.-''' I started out wanting to do a good job, but I've gotten to the stage where I'm just so tired, that I really can't bring myself to care any longer about the quality of the work. And it matters because the clawback is really huge and so I don't get paid if the client is unhappy. And I'm waiting for news from the scholarship board. It's a scholarship I really want and I was hoping my grades would at least get me an interview call, but all I've heard is silence and if you aren't called up by the end of June, then you've been rejected. It's mid-June now, and waiting in frustrated silence is killing me. I know that they don't like older students, but really? :/ -
Every day is an existential crisis. Dasein is a Being for whom the question of its own Being is still unanasweed, answerable only by action. Dasein is therefore a Being for which its own existence is its ongoing project. Remember: existence precedes essence. There is no 'essence' that we can ascribe to Kasimir, no more than we can ascribe an 'essence' to Wyrmhero. We are the product of our own actions, as we are the product of our existential projects, and for that reason, we are not fixed, immutable Beings. Dasein is consistently trying to answer the question of Being [die Seinsfrage], confronted with its own existential Angst. In Sartrean terms, there are moments when the lived-world recedes into the background and we are forced to confront the conditions of our own existence, absent bad faith. (Bad faith is what helps us cope.) And then, in that moment, once we're past bad faith, we understand what it is to be free. Nothing is true, everything is permitted. Nausea, Sartre calls it. The dizzying vertigo of standing on a great height and staring down at the world below. Absolute, radical, Sartrean freedom is nauseating. It is Sartrean freedom that lies at the heart of all existential crises: the realisation that our facticity is no restraint on our radical freedom. The realisation that we are what we make of ourselves. This is why all of life is an existential crisis: because Dasein is not complete. Dasein is Being-in-the-world, and it is only in Angst that the world is disclosed, experienced as separate from Dasein. [This is similar to Sartrean nausea: it is with Angst that Dasein gains the philosophical distance from the world.] Furthermore, Dasein is fundamentally incomplate. We refer to a mode of Dasein's Being as Being-towards-death [sein zum Tode]. Dasein is incomplete until the moment of its death, but at the point of death, all that Dasein is is annihilated. There is no more Dasein; it is not. Existential crises are everywhere. If you think hard enough, and if you stare long enough into the abyss to realise you're in the free fall in the dark and you don't know where you're gonna land, if you're ever going to. There's nothing to embrace or to not embrace. It is what it is.* *On that cheerful note, I shall leave y'all with the reminder that I'm primarily trained as an analytic philosopher, so that's an extra-crude version of Heidegger and Sartre since I'm not a continental-trained person. And the difference between analytic and continental is the difference between bonding with an honourspren or a Cryptic, so.

Okay, I've gotten some sleep and am vaguely more well-rested now, so this is the Elantris Report: 1. Ren notes that because most of the players in the game have been mostly quiet, that's not been very helpful to us. He lists out those who haven't been scanned (i.e. it is logically possible for them to be Cultists) as follows: M'Hael, Kipper/Burnt, Clanky, Dowanx, Araris, Piff/Em, Claincy, Ostrich/Silver, Aonar/Wyrm, Seonid, Sart, and Luckat. Of the lot, he is most inclined to rule out Aonar/Wyrm since we haven't had a Lover death, and Seonid, since he'd been attacked. 2. Those he would like to call attention to are: Silver, since Ostrich never posted, but had (at least at one point) clearly been doing something with his actions. He thinks that precisely because Bort came down on him on the cycle he got lynched, that makes Ostrich more suspicious. It's the whole 'Eliminator knows they've been blown and probably tried messing with us' thing. 3. Clanky and Dowanx had been more active previously. Ren'd like to call attention to how that activity has died off by mid-game. He doesn't like it. 4. Note that he called that a quick overview because we don't have much time. [Edit for clarity: I was heading off to sleep, Ren was doing work.] Myself, I'm still somewhat suspicious of Luckat, but there's not enough information for me to decide if that's a hunch or just my distaste for how blatant the apologies for inactivity are getting despite ongoing inactivity. Although I had initially been inclined to regard Kipper/Burnt as less suspicious because of his role in the Seonid-Meta thing, I've argued it with Wyrm and I'm going to acknowledge that those aren't very good grounds to remove suspicion for. Edit: colour.

Dulabros for life! Well, then. Claincy. Jain. I have some tidings from Ren, but I'm really tired right now, so I'm just going to point out one thing: the Odiv pool, then, is going to remain stagnant, at <Luckat, Wilson, Kas, Twei, Kipper.> And IMO, that's not too bad, since Luckat and Kipper are both up as Cultist suspects as well, allowing us to kill two whitespines with a Shardblade. Wilson would be a concern one way or another, given her current Monarch triple-vote. But I'm not really about to LAFO on that score. As I've always said, I'm not an Odiv, but that sort of thing is inaccessible as a ground of public reason Can't speak for Twei either. I will say this though: I was more willing to relax my suspicions of Jain this cycle for two reasons. As usual, I try to keep to Meta's dictum on not tunnelling. Second, I PMed the M'Hael last night (hence his hashtags) and we spoke briefly about our suspicions. He argued that Jain's willingness to be scanned made him a little less suspicious. (But still defeasibly so.) I thought that was somewhat reasonable; as it was, my suspicions were more directed against those who had volunteered to be scanned late, as that seemed to me to be a good way to appear to be on Team Arelon without being likely to be scanned. And related to that point on our conversation--just this. Specifically, if looking at yesterday's lynch diverters, we need to look at those among the converts who diverted the lynch (assuming the Odiv had been appointed prior to yesterday.) If the Odiv had been appointed last night (perhaps as Jain figured he might be scanned), then all bets there are off and we need to look to today instead. Will get back with the Elantris Report once I get some sleep, yeah?

Oh, boy >> Well, I'd look at the Feynman-Stueckelburg interpretation and just say balefire is antiparticles going backwards in time Not sure what else to say here >> The second law of thermodynamics says entropy can only increase or stay the same. It’s basically why time can’t go backwards, since entropy is a measure of wasted energy. Hence why ice-cream never re-freezes. (Well, outside of a fridge anyway, but fridges aren’t closed systems. You put energy into them to get energy out.) Quite honestly, I’d say this is more Kas’s thing than mine. Looks like what Gamma wants is unpicking a paradox, more than anything else And anyway, haven't read the series >>

Noted with thanks I've already decided to tweak the MaiPon Forger anyway, so I've neutered them just a little more, but hopefully, they should still be able to stand up to the other Factions's unique roles.

What’s there to switch? Everything’s the way it’s always been >> A family friend owns a copy. I've only played it once since it took several hours to play, but once we understood what was going on, it was fun. As for my favourite board game, it is... probably Dominion, if that counts as one. I like the variety of it, mostly. Just the sheer amount of difference each game. Plus, it appeals to my perfectionism. Otherwise, Ticket to Ride would be the best board game. For my favourite SE character, I’d have to go with Wurum and Heran. Can’t say no to 1337 Windrunner powers, can I? But also because the RP was different and fun, and the coincidence of Wurum’s being a Stormwarden and Heran being the town’s unofficial Stormwarden was very enjoyable.

Okay. This is getting vaguely ridiculous. 1. Do we know who have been attacked? I get it that this playing it close to the chest thing is real cute, so I'm going to simplify the question in a way that hopefully is less compromising. Has anyone been attacked twice? We can probably rule that person out as a Cultist. In fact, at this stage, I'd (defeasibly/prima facie/pro tanto) rule out any attacked person as a Cultist. They've been foiled enough that I don't see them wasting more time trying to play a Wounded Princess Gambit. [=named after a player in LG2, Eliminator attacks fellow Eliminator to make themselves appear on Team Village.] 2. I hope we'll know the results eventually, but until then, the show must go on. So. I'm going to red Claincy, for what I admit might not be the best of reasons. I'd really like to see something somewhat more substantial, especially since you've been going through the main thread itself. What've you got for us? 3. I'd also like to flag Luckat, though that might just be my personal irritation at getting numerous apologies speaking. (I mean, an apology for inactivity is fine but why bother if you're not gonna change anytime soon?) I'd appreciate hearing more from Clanky, from Araris, from Burnt, from Silver, Emerald and Sart. Especially Burnt, Emerald, Sart and Silver: guys, most of you replaced inactives. Please don't join them, because this is not helping us at all. 4. At this stage, I find myself at a loss for strong suspicions on the Cultist side. I'll go through the thread again and think about it. At this point, what I do have are people I'm more inclined to think are not Cultists. I'm more inclined to believe Dowanx is not a Cultist, and I am tentatively going to suggest Seonid, since their Jindo contact hasn't died yet. I am not sure if Kipper/Burnt's questions have been adequately addressed, so I'm not going to put them on my 'inclined to think they're on Team Arelon' list yet. So this is who I got: Cleared by Priest: Wilson, Ren, Kas, Neo, Twei, Mek, Alv [remember that this doesn't mean people can't be Odivs. But it does mean that not only can they not be Cultists, they can't be Gyorns.] Kas's 'Tentatively Less Suspected' List: Dowanx, Seonid, Jain, Sart/Wonko, Wyrm/Aonar. That leaves me with the M'Hael, Clanky, Araris, Em, Claincy, Silver, Luckat, Kipper/Burnt as existing suspicions, though at various degrees. I'm going to need to think harder on the issue, but I figured I'd kickstart discussion somewhere. 5. I'm not a big fan of the 'Gyorn-ssi must have a Seon' school of thought. That being said, I understand all but one existing Seon-holder (of those who began the game with a Seon) have been cleared. So I'm 50-50 about pursuing that line of reasoning. I don't want another Karlin or spanreed incident [Gyorn deliberately hiding their Seon], but at the same time, it does seem like something that might be worth a glance at. All the same, my Gyorn suspects strongly map onto the list of existing hiding places for the Gyorn: <M'Hael, Clanky, Dow, Sart/Wonko, Jain, Araris, Claincy.> At this point, I don't have anything strongly in favour of anyone. I'm still not sure about Jain, but his willingness to be scanned does make him a little less suspicious in my estimation. Again, I'll need to go back through the thread to be able to make a definite statement about where my suspicions lie, but I figure it's worth highlighting the people I generally suspect, even if I'm not yet ready to zoom in on definite targets. 6. Discuss, guys! We will discuss all the things! We must.

In order to cover all the mods: this question is for Meta. How many souls have you stolen/sold off to be able to survive so astonishingly well for such a dangerous player? More seriously: How do you survive that well in these games, given how everyone's terrified of you? What's your secret? The blood of a thousand orphans?

Your latest news from the reluctant converts of Shu-Dereth (yeah, finally got the memo): Kipper/Burnt has finally joined the ranks of the people who pay lip service to Shu-Dereth, but not their taxes Clearly, whoever takes our taxes takes our loyalty. And excellent job, Jindo Warrior(s)! This streak is extremely good, and to be honest, I'm kind of jealous (Failed Lurcher here...) I'm back talking to Elantris and will convey Ren's words as soon as he has anything to say. At least he's not complaining about the food right now Edit: Odiv suspect pool: Luckat, Wilson, Kas, Twei, Kipper/Burnt. Gyorn suspect pool: M'Hael, Dow, Jain, Clanky, Claincy, Araris, Wonko/Sart.

Kas and I talked it over. We both prefer Wyrmimir, for reasons to do with Norse mythology. I'm taking Kashero though, and Kas's taking Wyrmimir because we like to be inexplicably confusing that way And the only good answer to a 'Why' question is: Whyever not?

I apologise for the awkward of having posted a couple of times in this space I've been working on this game a little in secret, with some help. This was mostly after a conversation pointing out the effect MR1 had on the meta-game and a few other conversations about rerunning old games. So I asked myself: what would it take to patch MR1? What would a reboot of MR1 look like? This game started with that idea in mind, but things quickly took a different turn. I present to you: Three Splendid Suns The current Emperor of Eighty Suns, Yazad, grows weaker each day from his disease. While the resealers are working hard to stave off his impending death, it has become clear that the time has come for a new candidate to sit the Rose Throne. Already, the factions are plotting and moving against each other. Here, in the very heart of the Rose Empire, thickets of intrigue thrive and flourish; plots are executed with coin and connections, just as much as they are with crossbow bolts and knives. The factions are growing restless. Arbiters, all of them, begin meeting in secret to discuss favoured candidates, making and breaking faction alliances. A time of great change is on the horizon. Only one faction will emerge triumphant from this struggle. And the winner will shape the future of the Rose Empire. At this point, my main worry is balancing the unique roles. While I think the Glory and Heritage Factions are relatively fine vis-a-vis each other, I'm far more worried about giving the Moderation Faction what is essentially an LG6 Chaneller. Anyway, any thoughts/feedback would be appreciated. The MR1 bones of this game are probably still apparent, but I'm also trying to take it in a somewhat different direction Edit: Updated on 15/6/2015.
-
I'm tempted to ask a really loaded question, like: "So, uh, Great Lord Fien Urbain, did you like Ren better or me better? Thanks, -Kassel Erikell." That probably won't go down too well with someone so I'll keep it straight Which of the games you've played so far did you most particularly enjoy? (And this question is directed at Gamma, but I'm cool if someone else takes it. Would still be nice to get an answer from the Great Lord though ) Edit: Okay, I have another question for Gamma (again, if someone else wants to take this, it's cool, but I'd like an answer from the Great Lord since I've sworn allegiance to him and all ) This is a Sanderson Elimination game and you see your Housemate tied to a railway track. You know that the lynchtrain is coming: and you're standing right before a switch with two settings. If you flip the switch to Setting 1, you can divert the lynchtrain to another track, where it kills ten innocent players. If you flip the switch to Setting 2, you can divert the lynchtrain to a second track, where it kills 2 innocent players you don't like and a puppy. What do you do? And what do you consider the ethical (i.e. 'morally good') thing to do? And what if Peter Singer was one of the ten innocent players? *No puppies were hurt in the making of this thought experiment.

Apologies for just dropping in. I saw that comment and had to address it. Wyrm betrayed me terribly in MR1. (He says I've never forgiven him for it, but that's a lie. I've forgiven him a long time ago.) That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. And honour doesn't have to die. I've maintained a zero-betrayal record so far in SE, and I intend to continue doing so. It really boils down to your playstyle. Can it be avoided sometimes? Well, no. Sometimes, the GM railroads you and you have to do it. Otherwise, I've never done so. I keep my word, stick to my alliances, and don't betray people. That's just how I roll. And I'm proud of it, and hope to continue doing so.

Hi guys, this is Wyrm, but not the Wyrm you're looking for >>. The actual Wyrm (his Honour) would like me to inform y'all that he's currently without Internet, due to a kerfuffle down on his end to do with his Internet, router, and his ISP. Long story short, he's got a small fix but he's not gonna be able to get online to handle you lot until at least Monday or so, if things go well. So, sit tight, and happy backstabbing and shenanigans and all of that stuff until normal service resumes! That's all from me. -Kas

TBH, my current suggestion is for Meta to focus on scanning Gyorn candidates. My reasoning is as follows: if the Gyorn keeps up the ongoing trend of converting the scanned, we're going to have some difficulty making headway in singling out likely Gyorn suspects. There are at least four more people who have been scanned by both Priests, and if the Gyorn keeps going after them, then we're not going to be able to have extra information. We do get more Odiv suspects, but this doesn't help us in narrowing down on the Gyorn. One possible route is to just assume the Gyorn is concealing themselves in low activity, but that to me seems to basically boil down to a shot in the dark, given who remains. Our current existing Gyorn suspect pool is: <M’Hael, Jain, Clanky, Dow, Araris, Claincy, Wonko/Sart> There's a decent reason to scan M'Hael as well, I would feel, especially since his name has been brought up as being a suspected Cultist. If he can be cleared of being the Gyorn and/or a Cultist, it would allow us to make progress on two fronts, rather than just one. Anyway, I think my bottom line is that it is more helpful for Meta to scan putative Gyorns, because that helps us more in terms of resource allocation. I feel that discussion is much more helpful in allowing us to locate Cultists. After all, that's pretty much what we've been doing for what, how many games by now? Having a Priest is great and all, but I feel they're better employed against a conversion foe. They're handy but not absolutely necessary in pinning down Cultists. And this is despite Meta's having scanned 2 Cultists already, as-is! I'm 50-50 about Jain. I know there's a push for him and I still suspect he is the Gyorn. But at the same time, he's not a very strong Cultist suspect, IMO, and so scanning him wouldn't help advance our efforts on that front. But ultimately, guess we'll find out what Meta's choice is! Stay tuned tomorrow, folks! Also, do we know who got hit last night? I understand if no one wants to reveal that, but it'd be helpful to continue looking at victimology. My current read is that Seonid and Phat, at least, were attempted strategic hits. I have no idea what to make of Orlok still or Wilson. Edit: Please note that Odivs will only be informed of their status by the end of the Night on which they've been sworn in. (I checked with Hreo on this.) So if it looks like someone hasn't been made an Odiv in the day-posts, anything they post at Night is similarly unaffected, until the new Day Turn begins.
