  1. Maybe it also has to deal with their time period. If we were modern day feruchemists, you could put a movie marathon on the ole tv, sit and just watch while you store. Your brain can process as normal since your not storing mental speed, so you literally do not have to do a think except watch. In Saze's time period, the closest you can do to this is read, and you still need to turn the pages or move your eyes to track the text. We see him store a bunch of attributes at once and turning a page is agonizingly slow for him.
  2. Yeah the quote pretty clearly states that the bones " began to glow, the bone inscriptions beneath their skin shining". I agree with tobar14 regarding the investiture, but otherwise it definitely does not look like breath to me. There is not even a hint of the term or implication of exhalation.
  3. Actually based on that description, she would be 12. If you were 10 for three years, then year one you are 10, year two you are 11, year three you are 12. Not to be nitpicky, but just for accuracy. Now yes this gets down to personal philosophy and ethics, but the individuals Jasnah killed were murderers and sought out such interactions to kill more people, while Kaladin's men were innocent of any crime perpetrated, knew nothing of what they took part in as well as that there would be any penalty for their actions. In fact they took no actions. They were punished for the actions of Kaladin. So I feel there is a rather large difference.
  4. Could you provide a quote and page number of where people give away breath in elantris? It was my understanding that the shape of the dakhor bones being infused with the dor is how they channel the powers. It is their version of the aons. But that was my interpretation. I do not recall there being any transfer of breath in Elantris
  5. edit: took a reread to get that. It is the morning, had a long late night weekend, and took a sec to notice the cognitive function part lol, Thanks!
  6. Pewter heals. Not as extensive as gold but it also has the balance then when you are burning it, you take less damage to begin with. Although you do have me connection wise, using soothing or rioting would certainly cause someone to be more inclined to help me, and maybe teach me the language, or learn mine lol.
  7. Not necessarily. He could have had the children, ascended, the children grow up, maybe have a family of their own, the children notice Rashek isn't acting like Rashek anymore (Ruin's influence), complain, heated fight, he kills them, regrets it, and begins to question all he has done with the final empire. Meanwhile his grandkids, hidden away (and maybe even convinced the Lord Ruler they too are dead) so as not to end up like their parents grow up elsewhere, and propagate. The Lord Ruler still influenced by Ruin and Preservation convinces himself that a never ending tyranny is actually still a good idea, and continues. Meanwhile his descendants continue in the background all the way to the alloy of law era.
  8. So I felt this was a really good point so I felt compelled to re-read the scene to see if I missed anything. So this is pretty loose and mainly to rationalize it, but I think I figured out why. Prof didn't completely contain the blast. He opened the top of his forceshield to point it upwards. So even then he didn't fully manifest his powers, or believe he could stop it, just direct it away. The problem is even doing that, subtly made him cross the line he had been walking just enough to make him change. Given how we have seen him use his powers as a high epic, it is my belief he could have contained that power by himself. If he had aimed to truly sacrificed himself to save everyone, he could have enveloped it and himself in it completely so no power would have escaped and he perhaps would have been so weakened from using his power and regeneration, he could have been handled. But again he didn't fully believe he could accomplish it, so he used his powers to direct it instead of stop it. Now there are a lot of counters to what I wrote, that is why I am saying this is more to rationalize than definitively answer it.
  9. I thought by that point the blades were switched and it was a normal shardblade that Dalinar was holding. Look at the descriptions of the blades.
  10. I do not think this is the case, but to rationalize it, if you see a giant blood red star suddenly appear in the sky, seen day or night, wouldn't you freak out and think it is the end of days?
  11. Then why would they allow the dead spren to be torn into the physical real screaming?
  12. She said because she owned it, realized it was a part of her, her responsibility. It was Calamity's influence that causes the darkness. The darkness was not connected to the powers. When an epic faced its fear, it causes calamity to retreat, which is why the darkness weakened but also the powers retreated.
  13. If you are referring to bronze, it has been confirmed by WoB that it could detect other forms of investiture, but it is very difficult and takes practice.
  14. and I was agreeing with you by citing the quote.......
  15. I was given to understand that genetics did not come into play. That an epic inheriting their parent's ability was very rare. The only reason we saw it play out that way was Tavi, who was unique, and David who arguably did not inherent it from his father. Just his alternate dimension father happened to have the same power. As to why it was important to make that distinction, was for it to make sense for David to be able to get some of Prof's stuff from his cheek. I know very little about genetics, but I was given the impression getting mitochondrial dna from a sample was much different/harder than just getting a skin sample from a wound.
  16. Yeah I kind of look at it as Hoid is a hunter in the Serengeti while Khriss is Jane Goodall.
  17. Perhaps the fact that Tensoon's spikes were the blessing of presence helped.
  18. I tried looking in this thread and didn't find it, so if I missed it I am sorry, but do we know if he had this child before or after his ascension? The subsequent WoB made me feel like it was a kid Rashek had back as a terrisman, so the child had no intrinsic broken abilities of itself. Storms, it might not even have been a feruchemist. So the gene pool is there, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything in the grand scheme of things.
  19. My gut says it doesn't work that way though I have no concrete facts to show otherwise. I just feel when you measure something that is fluctuating, it needs to have fluctuated to that measurement in order for it to be measured. Otherwise you are just writing a random number on a piece of paper and the spren has no reason to feel the number applies to it, for it to be fixed. Now if you build a gigundo bonfire, and if the size of the fire affects the size of the spren instead of affecting the number of spren attracted to it, then you could measure a 50 foot spren and it would stay that way. But that is just my take on it.
  20. I didn't know that because silver kills shades on Thredony, that that meant it was inert on that planet alone. I thought it was just that silver couldn't be burned allomantically but it could be pushed or pulled on. Is there a quote or WoB on this? Not contradicting you, just wanted to know the source so I can learn something new
  21. Is there a quote or WoB on this? Not disputing it, but this is the first I heard of it, so curious the source.
  22. Maybe I am recalling wrong, but if I recall correctly Kelsier not fighting fair is more along the lines of him sneaking in and killing Kaladin while he sleeps. Actually just found the words of brandon, here they are: BRANDON SANDERSON Kelsier would probably find him in his sleep and kill him there. I would say Kelsier because he would not fight fairly. edit: side note, wahoo I may have actually finally gotten the hang of searching for WoB! lol
  23. So just to ring in on this from my own interpretation/opinion, and curious your thoughts on it. When Calamity kept saying over and over that they were to observe and learn, then return. That they were not allowed to interfere, it sounded a lot like asimov's robotic laws. That they break down for Calamity's people kind of like this: Do Not Interfere Observe Learn Return When he was first born into our world, he was so overwhelmed by sensory information he freaked out, and it was implied he took actions. He stated "You are worthless, as a whole. You will destroy yourselves, and I will bear witness. I will not shirk my duty as others have. We are to watch, as is our calling. But I must not interfere, not again. The acts of youth can be forgiven. Though I was never truly a child, I was new. And your world is a shock. A dreadful shock." He nodded, as if convincing himself. So he got born in to our world, had the worst experience of his existence, and then lashed out, doing something. What that is? No clue, but it was interference. Now you have someone "new", with the rational of a new born, with unlimited powers who felt it was hurt by the people of the world. Think of the Hulk in the movie "Incredible Hulk". Anytime he attacked the soldiers is when he was shot at. He literally only responded to any "pain" inflicted on him, and any collateral damage was due to his tantrum. He is being hurt, does not know why, does not know his own strength, and just wants the pain to stop so lashes out. This brings us to the next step: So his prime directive was not to interfere, but the moment he got here, he did exactly that. Well who's fault is that? Can't be his. He was just doing what he was told. It was the humans who made him do it. They hurt him. They are bad people. They should be punished. But he can't interfere. He isn't allowed. He is however supposed to observe. Well he is going to observe humans destroy themselves like the bad people they are. Then his earlier interference will be justified. They made him interfere. He is a good extradimentional entity. He does what he is meant to. It has nothing to do with his feelings being hurt, and wanting to see the humans punished for what they did to him. He didn't make a mistake, its their fault. So he will learn to confirm they are bad to the core by destroying themselves, and he will get to leave to go home with the knowledge of a job well done. Then he will get to return. But wait. He is still here, and has been here for a long time. Why aren't humans wiped out already? They are bad, they can't move beyond that. If they move beyond it, then it means He will have to move beyond his pain and be sorry for breaking the rules. That even though justified, he still made a mistake. No, no, that can't be it. It will happen, they will all wipe themselves out. Then David shows him. Shows him with absolute clarity and fact, that the darkness in humans. The darkness he is so convinced was the reason he was hurt upon entrance into our worlds, wasn't there to begin with. It was just an accident on all sides. That the destructive nature that he thinks is prevalent in everyone, is him. That he is as subject to pain as humans. And just like humans, he has the equal chance to rise above it or be consumed by it. That he chose to be consumed. There were plenty of other versions that were able to rise above it and go home. But he wasn't able to. All his suffering since his birth was not at the hand of these evil humans, but from himself. He never grew up. So it was being faced by this, that he realized he so completely failed his directives. He interfered massively, and completely missed what he was supposed to learn for years. That he, who was so convinced he was right, to the point he defined all his actions from that sole premise, turns out was wrong. Having what you feel is your entire life view thrown out the window, is very very jarring. So all he could do is curl up underneath the sense of his whole world being turned upside down for the second time in his existence, and he left.Turns out his job was done long long ago, he got a big fat F, and he just didn't want to face it. Now I am not saying whether or not he was justified based on my interpretation. Just that this is what and why I feel he did what he did. I feel this was very much in homage to Mister Mxyzptlk. Hopefully I articulated my thoughts well, and I still say this is my own interpretation. Could very well be like skaa is saying, and his weakness got negated. This is just what I took out of it. edit: I realize i did pretty much just repeat what I already wrote, but I hope I fleshed it out further to explain why I felt he left, which was the original intention of this post while the last was to explain why I thought his species was not here to destroy.
  24. So two things. First regarding Prof not losing his powers by saving David the two times. Both times he still held himself back. Both times he tried to run. Both times he didn't use his powers to their fullest, confronting the chance of failure. Every plan he comes up with, even Steelheart, was him not fully believing they could do it, and having a way to flee. Second, a lot of people are curious why Larcener's species comes to destroy people. Maybe i understood things differently, but Larcener kept saying "We are to observe and learn". The problem with him is he came to observe and was so overwhelmed with stimuli, his hatred bled into those he gifted powers. He let the traumatic experience of being born color his entire view of us and our world. My assumption in other realities, those versions of calamity, observed humans, learned what they thought they needed to learn and left. He felt we were all corrupted, but still felt he had to learn something, so was going to stick around till we were all destroyed, leaving nothing left to learn and he could leave. Though the twisted irony is he was so convinced we were irredeemable, he ignored any signs of being wrong which would have let him leave far earlier.
