I hadn't thought that all the way through, it seems. Hmm... I wanted the metallurgist as a player because I liked the mechanic - especially the idea of all the allomancers losing their abilities if the metallurgist is killed (unless there are sufficient vials floating around, that is), and put in non-Allomantic abilities to balance that a little. But I hadn't thought the information game through. Would it be enough if there were multiple metallurgists? Alternately, another option I considered was making the metallurgist a public role, and not start with any PMs with anyone. That way they don't know whether or not the person they are getting orders from is an allomancer or just trying to bluff a role. (Or, of course, do this as well as having multiple metallurgists) The third option is to remove the role, and just have players place orders to the GM. But that takes a lot of the tension out, if the source of metals can't be killed. EDIT: Another thought I just had was to give the Mistings two vials of their metal. This could be done in conjunction with any of the ideas above. It would also make the metallurgist less powerful by increasing the time before an allomancer had to restock on metals. Also, another question. I've been thinking of swapping out the lurcher's protection role for a roleblock one, since the hazekiller is going to be the basic role in This game.

Alright. Here's the most recent update for my Scadrial MR game. The players will be members of the personal guard of the nobleman Senn Conrad, who oversees the community of Suttonsford. House Venture has recently demanded that he marry his only daughter to one of their client houses. He would rather use her to form an alliance elsewhere, but Venture is being insistent. To try to protect himself and his daughter, he has increased his personal guard, drawing on his House's strong complement of Allomancers. Unfortunately, some Venture agents have been snuck into his retinue. Their objective is to eliminate his guard so that they can kidnap Conrad's daughter to force his hand on the marriage matter. To increase the pressure, Lord Venture has also hired bandits to ransack the trade routes in and out of Suttonsford, leading to an increasingly desperate shortage of metals. The guard captains have placed orders against hoarding, but an illicit trade flourishes in these desperate conditions... Roles: All roles except the Hemalurgist are potentially available to either faction. The Hemalurgist is restricted to the Venture agents. Mechanics:

Nobody knows what Paladin and crew are up to, least of all me. I bet they found a quiet place for the night. Ari and Weeks left their cave at sunrise, so I can't think of a reason that they wouldn't be there. I could post a quick catchup for them, but it's not likely to be today.

Ok, so any water left out in the sun works? Then any microorganisms would have to populate every water source on the planet (or at least the continent - actually, question: could sea water be used to make Sunwater). Not an impossible thing, though, to be sure. Glad you liked my ideas, too. To change my thoughts to meet your specifications: You could have a set of three genetic adaptations, which allow the magic users to access the energy stored by the microorganism in your three different ways. If you make the adaptations exclusive, then nobody could use more than one type of magic. It might stretch credulity to have the same microorganism be able to be tapped for three different effects, so it might be better to have a whole cocktail of organisms in the water, and have humans adapted to use magic from only three of them. So, one organism port power, but only people with the adaptation can use the power. Now you've got the water using people, and the non-magic using population. Now to ask why the water-users need to keep drinking it - their immune system kills it off after a day or so. This happens to normal people, too, just they can't use the organism for power because they don't have the genes. Then, if the sun-users have a weak immune system, that could explain why the organism stays in them (so they only need to soak up the sun, instead of continually drinking water), and also why they have side effects (because they are infected with a disease/virus that they can't shake off). Hope my thoughts are useful for you!

Crap. I hate my phone sometimes. Somehow I ended up downvoting Mail's post. This is like the second time this week this has happened... Maybe I should just stop phone browsing. Anyways, to the actual purpose of this thread - polish history question for you: Did the Poles have any interaction with the Mongol invasion of Russia?

Well, I'm just the neighborhood wormhole physicist, not a biochemist, but I'll see if I have anything useful to add. Before we can figure out a reason that some people can just absorb it without needing the water, we first must know what makes the water so special. First question: you say "certain types of water that have been left in the sun." So, is it water from a certain place? Or maybe water with a certain mineral balance (which is not exclusive with water from a certain place)? Or, to blatantly steal from Kobold's post above, is it a microorganism that lives in the water? Or maybe three, since there are three magical effects. This also has the possibility of water that grants one power, and not the others, or just two of the three, or whatever. If it were a microorganism, you could have some sort of genetic adaptation that allows people who drink the water or bathe in it to enhance themselves temporarily. It could be that the body's natural immune system normally kills off this microorganism, so most people with the genetic adaptation must re-imbibe it periodically. For a few people with this adaptation, however, the microorganism is capable of surviving in their body. Since it draws power from the sun in the water, it would make sense that it draws power from the sun in the body, too. These people might have compromised immune systems, or systems that just can't recognize the microorganism (or organisms). This stops them from defending against it. No need for special water, but they are infected by a foreign organism, possibly hostile. Aging more quickly can be accomplished by damaging the telomeres in the cells (bits in the DNA, from the little I understand). Fatigue is a common side effect of infection, so no need for super special magical intervention there. I even think that there are some illnesses with the side effect of eating large amounts. Just food for thought.

I have Cosmere-interested family (or at least, Sanderson reading family, which is close enough for tactical nukes) in Davis/Weber counties, and I could see if they would be interested.

Oops... And since there is a question about the answer before mine, I'll grab that one too. Nothing to do with the fact that I'm a little bit of a dinosaur nerd... Just for fun, I'll even make them all theropods: Tyrannosaurus Allosaurus Velociraptor Megalosaurus Carnotaurus Spinosaurus Baryonyx Ceratosaurus Dromaeosaurus Utahraptor That's 10. Technically, of course, it's only 10 genera. Within the Tyrannosaurus genus alone there are several species (T. rex, T. bataar, etc.) But I'm not sure that I could do 10 dinosaurs with the species name. Anyways. For my question: Name 10 Golden Age villains from the Spiderman comic.

What's your favorite.... ? (Forum game)
Seonid replied to Kestrel's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Hard to pick just 1. I'll go with my top 3 - The Lord of the Rings, The Riddle-Master series, and Wizard of Earthsea. Funny that, even though Sanderson is my favorite author, his books actually don't hit higher than 4 on my list. My turn! What is your favorite board game? -
Golden Age Heroes? Well, let's see what I can do. I'm not 100% sure if all of these were around during the Golden Age of Comic Books (still a little bit hazy on where the date cutoffs are, too, tbh), but here's a shot. Superman The Flash Spiderman Batman The Green Arrow

No problem. Take as long as you want. And I'm glad that I at least didn't make you too mad. I never like ruffling feathers. I hope that the rest of the community isn't too mad. If they are, I'll find a way to south it over. When I do post my faction game (which should be later today), though, I'd like your input.

Nothing super special there during the pre-eruption time period. The islands are rocky, and not very fertile. Some fishing villages, not really under the domination of anyone but themselves most of the time. Rakalli and Taravoy bahri pirates sometimes extort tribute, but there isn't much to take in the first place. In a few centuries, they become important because of dense uranium deposits, but that's not for a while yet. The central island also one day becomes home to one of the primary spaceports, due to the convenience of the fuel for spaceborne nuclear power plants (the Edassans use pulsed fission propulsion - essentially nuking yourself at a rapid pace to accelerate your spaceship, until the development of fusion torchdrives). After the switch to fusion power, the spaceport remains important because the ocean is a convenient source of deuterium for the fusion reactions. The proximity of a central spaceport stimulates manufacturing of all manner of industrial parts, although the raw materials are shipped in from elsewhere. The manufacturing jobs mostly move into orbit eventually, leaving the island economy far weaker than it had been, but there remains enough of a surface-to-orbit demand to keep the islands economically alive. Also, no, I didn't know any of this until you asked As an addendum to Curiosity's question, a whole lot of my worldbuilding comes in the moment when people ask me questions.

Actually, the ring of islands on that map is the Taravoy homeland. I talk a little bit about them in the post above this one. To add a little more cultural tidbits, the Taravoy are the enablers of much of the slave trade, trafficking in human cargo from the equatorial jungles and moving them to the rich markets of the Rakalli, the Lyusans (some of the city-states, at least, others have abolished slavery), the Alcorazimai empire, and virtually all of the lands around the Jade Sea. The far northern slave market is much less profitable, in part due to the culture of the Senlii, who regard their own populace as slaves of the Empire and as such have little use for outland slaves, and in other places due to the existence of an underclass of immigrants, who supply much cheaper labor than the expensive slaves of the south. With regards to legendary pokemon, you aren't likely to find many there. But I'm wavering back and forth between having sea serpents live in the warmer equatorial waters like those. (By wavering, I mean that I think that it is a very cool idea, but I'm not sure whether it belongs in Edassa, or in another of my settings). The submerged caldera whose peaks form the island ring sits above a magma chamber at least 20% larger than the one underneath Yellowstone, in the United States. This erupts in the year 1423, with cataclysmic effects. Not so great as they would have been if the world was at a technological level comparable to 21st century earth, of course, because such staple trades as metalworking and subsistence agriculture have not yet been outsourced to a vulnerable and small class of specialists, but sufficient to disrupt political continuity across the continent. Literally not a single country remains politically intact as a result. Many of the coastal nations are simply flooded out, and places out of reach of tsunamis are still plunged into political and economic chaos as the ash precipitates a volcanic winter. The famines decimate almost half of the continental population. This event, incidentally, is the final death-blow to the Inquisition of the Church of the Martyr. Their control of the united Church had been slipping since the events of Menkor in 1375, with which you may be familiar . In the two decades preceding the eruption, however, their rule was challenged by ecclesiastical reforms in their home cities, and they found themselves increasingly at odds with the Patriarch of Corento, the spiritual leader of the united Church. The new Patriarch adopted a conciliatory posture towards the new Patriarchate of Menkor, reversing the Inquisition's hard-line policies. If the eruption hadn't happened, it likely would have resulted in a war, which the Inquisition would have won. The eruption and resulting famine broke the Inquisition's armies and ended what was left of their political control. Unfortunately, it also ended the new Patriarch's reforms, as he died during the famine and the disease outbreak that followed. I actually don't listen to a lot of music, honestly. It tends to distract me from worldbuilding, which is the default use of my time. Any time other people would be listening to music, I'm generally crafting worlds (or putting together lists for Star Wars Armada, or plotting in Sanderson Elimination, but those are comparably minor pastimes). But when I do listen to music, I prefer classical. It's soothing, and the least distracting. It's also beautiful - at least the older stuff. Some of the more modern stuff seems to have been written merely to show off the technical skill of the composer, with little regard to whether it is pleasant to listen to.

Hmm...Triple post here, I guess? Trying to figure out a good phrase to describe my role in this past game. Loyal sibling just doesn't seem to cut it. Mostly, I seem to have just caused problems... Any suggestions, Kas? But the updated stats are 6 games, 4 wins, 3 deaths If you don't have suggestions, I'll keep the same phrases.

And I just read the dead doc, and it looks like I became a rather unpopular player... That's rather disturbing, actually. I'd rather not go down in the SE history books as a player that's not fun to play around. So, I guess, sorry Wilson? I'll have you know that I advocated for bribing you instead of killing you. I wasn't on when Emerald finally got on and picked targets, so I had no say in that. I tried (successfully) to save you from Joe's kill, redirecting it onto Wyrm. Also, a second belated apology for not protecting you in the last LG. If it helps, you managed to make me feel guilty for winning this game when you lost the last one... Also, sorry to both Emerald and Eowyn. In the first case, I wanted to do something to prevent being ganged up on by the other two factions. It was poorly played. I felt rushed, and didn't give you enough time in the doc to come and offer a defense. If I had to do anything over this game, I'd redo that. To Eowyn, again sorry. I was played. Badly. I don't know how I missed that Shallan could be the Striker. I thought that we had a kill go through after she had been bribed, but I misinterpreted that. It made me certain that you were discovery. Enough to put a kill on you. I wouldn't redo it, because it was a good decision based on the information I had at the time. I was going to roleblock someone in Moderation anyways, to stop their bribe ability, because I was worried about the wild card ability that they had to change the balance between Glory and Heritage. I picked you because if I wanted to use the kill (and I didn't want it wasted), I had to use it on the person that I roleblocked, and I would have felt too guilty about killing someone on a faction that had no chance of winning when we could have bribed them instead, so I killed the person I thought was Discovery (who we couldn't bribe, and therefore I didn't feel guilty about killing). And I was wrong. Also, I apologize to folks for my hyperactive altruism. It has no place in a faction game. Maybe it means I'm not suited to play faction games, and should just stick to regular Elimination games... Or maybe just Faction games that don't have bribing. Or maybe the bribing mechanic was a problem Either way, I recognize that I was a part of the problem. Sorry about that. I've apologized to Kas several times now, but the rest of the thread probably deserves it. I don't apologize to Discovery. While you were a threat at the beginning, later on, you were just a convenient scapegoat to keep the other factions attention. It almost worked. Kind of. It kept the other factions away from us while we built up for the faction war (you know, the one that went out more with a whimper than a bang). And if I hadn't totally missed Shallan being the Striker, Heritage would have won hands down. On that note, though, well played Zephrer. You had me thoroughly convinced. You managed to con me in the doc and in RL, and that takes some doing.

A second round of appreciation for Kas. You've been an excellent GM. If you don't feel like you want to GM another game, that's alright - do what you need to do for your own health - but don't imagine that any of us think you were anything but an excellent GM. I know I'd sign up for any other game you GM'ed like a shot. This has been an incredibly fun game. It had its weaknesses, sure, but all games do. And your patches were the right thing for the time. And I certainly hope to play more games with you in the future, whether or not you end up GM-ing again. After all, if I ever do decide to run my Stormlight faction game, I need advice from the best, right?

Ummm...no, Aonar has admitted to being Discovery in the doc. I was going to direct you there to see his conversation, but I just realized that you got bribed away. Good choice Heritage. He is Discovery but has supposedly retained his Bloodsealer role, which is interesting. He says that he thought he couldn't use Regicide because it was restricted to Blasphemous Scholars, but Kas has apparently clarified that any member of Discovery may use it. Aonar claims that Discovery didn't make a kill at all last cycle, as they expected to be roleblocked.

Makes sense that Aonar's Discovery. After all, Kas' threat was to give Discovery SlaughterRegicide and to give them Wilson. Aonar said in the glory doc that Wilson volunteered along with a few others to be resurrected as part of the balancing. Aonar was just the lucky one the RNG picked.

I had actually been under the impression that the extra bit of Ruin had gone into making the koloss a true-breeding race.
