  1. This might be germane to the discussion. Scroll down to the section on Alien biology, which lists possible protein analogues and solvents they could work with. This is extremely speculative, and well out of my expertise, so there may be significant issues with it, but the site has generally been accurate within my areas of expertise, so I feel comfortable recommending it. Also, Kobold, I thought you might like the site. I spent a lot more hours than I like to think about down the rabbit hole on that site. Worse than TV Tropes for me. Pretty much everything you need for true-to-modern-physics science fiction.
  2. MAG stands for Mistborn Adventure Game, the official RPG from Crafty Games. It's an excellent, story-based, unobtrusive system. It costs about $40 for the hardcover or about $15 for the pdf, if I remember right.
  3. Oh, good question. I forgot to put that in. Any cycle, a parshendi or a voidbringer may forgo their action in order to change forms. On the second question - there are no double roles and no parshendi may have any roles.
  4. Alright! Here is the faction game that I've been working on. It's set in Roshar, an alternate history where the peace talks between the Parshendi and the Alethi actually get off of the ground. There are lots of factions, and lots of roles. Any feedback would be appreciated, especially on the balance. And especially from Kas, if he's checking this, to help me stress-test every possible way that the game could be broken. A Desperate Alliance In the midst of the chaos and turmoil of the War of Reckoning, a faint beacon of hope shines. The Parshendi, in a surprising move, have offered peace to the warring Alethi highprinces. Atop a wide plateau in the middle of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi and the Alethi delegations meet to attempt the negotiation of a formal and binding peace treaty. But such a momentous occasion has not gone unnoticed. And on Roshar, secrets abound. From the shadows, many malicious eyes watch the negotiators. None of them seek the same ultimate goals. Not all of them are human. But all watch and meddle for the same purpose - that these fragile talks must bear only a stillborn fruit... Public Factions Hidden Factions Alethi Roles Surgebinders Parshendi Forms Mechanics EDIT: Removed the text talking about eye color - it was a leftover from an earlier version. There is such a thing as too much complexity!
  5. Well, this is entertaining. The crickets chirping are the best I've heard in this game yet. Still not as good as the crickets in some of the cycles in the last MR game, though. You have to get more inactive then you've been doing to get that good. I'm at a loss for suspicions, right now, honestly. If I trust the current holder of Ruin, though, then phattemer is probably good. Kipper doesn't trust Ruin, and I'm sure he has reasons for that. I have no reasons not to at present. I'd like to hear Lopen's reasons for his vote, assuming that he really did know that phatt was roleblocked, but I don't want to turn it into a bandwagon yet. Right now (if I'm counting right) it's tied between phatt and Lopen. If Lopen doesn't show up and explain his vote, I'll break that tie.
  6. Official application to be a member of the guild! I play piano and organ (not exceptionally well, but enough to accompany church services...), and I write/worldbuild. I also draw a little (mostly maps for my worldbuilding). As for a portfolio, I submit to you Edassa.
  7. Crap, Crap, Crap, that was not an intentional downvote! Can someone fix that? And shoot me for browsing the forum on mobile again? I was going to call dibs on being the forum cousin that stays in their room all day writing epic fantasy that nobody but the family will ever read...
  8. The Sorukaan Empire and their neighboring human communities in the northern continent are probably right at the beginning of the High Middle Ages, technologically (of course, social things are different). Crossbows and worked steel are common, and the humans mass-produce pikes and field groups of armored cavalry (again, although the social order is not a direct mapping to European feudalism). Gunpowder has not yet been developed, but is probably on the order of a century away, maybe less. Certainly not 3 or 4. Of course, how far steelworking has spread from the Sorukaana is entirely up to any neighbors I get. The sea on the yellow green border would be excellent! I'll wait until you are finished to grab a specific area, but I'm thinking the eastern continent, about a 400 mile-long stretch of coastline would be nice. Speaking of that, I just looked up Koppen climate codes (fascinating things - I love classification schema!), and while you are still fleshing it out, could I get a Dfb or Dfc area somewhere along the eastern coastline? Sorry to keep making requests, but the taiga environment is one I'd like to explore.
  9. In that case, shall I call dibs on it? Actually, since I've already bitten of a large chunk of land with worldbuilding opportunities, if anyone else is more interested in it, you're welcome to it. But if nobody else looked at this and said "I must have it," I'd love it!
  10. Hmm...honestly, I haven't seen anything super suspicious about Paranoid King. What makes you so keen to lynch him, Kipper? As for myself, I'm going to vote for Honey Badger You claimed to have roleblocked Haelbarde on Night 5, but Odium made a kill that night. What do you have to say for yourself?
  11. Why thank you. Just curious, which of my roleplays brought that compliment on? Also, you mix Frozen and Steelheart exquisitely.
  12. That sounds excellent, Kobold! Keeps my original creative vision while expanding the options for other people - kind of like Mek's expansion to the Lumuole system.
  13. My sections don't need to be adjacent - in fact, I was thinking that they were across the inland sea from each other. If it works better for you, feel free to put a climate band or two separating them.
  14. Kobold, hope you don't mind the additions I made to the Dromean biology - the reproductive portion. I'm wondering if it might be better for the non-pregnant females to have a mating season twice a year or even once a quarter instead of just once a year. Your thoughts (or anyones) would be appreciated. Also, it looks like most folks like Sorukaan (plural: Sorukaana). I prefer the plural form to the alternative (Soruukana just looks weird to me), so that is the official name of the Empire going forward. Alright. That map looks excellent. I can follow it rather well, I think. I actually quite like the option of two continents with the large gulf! Would it be a shallow gulf, or would it be quite deep (as in oceanic floor, rather than continental crust at the bottom)? For the north continent, I don't really care whether the inland sea is landlocked or if it connects to open ocean at some point. Since I don't have specialized geography or climatology training (just physics, sorry!), I'll describe what I was thinking of. The grasslands are temperate and warm during most of the season. It rarely gets cold enough to snow, and the humidity is relatively high due to the nearby inland sea. I'm thinking almost a Mediterranean climate, if that fits. I don't know enough to say whether that's a possibility. Rain is not exceptionally frequent, but the area isn't arid. I do need the grasslands to be near a mountain range somewhere, but I'm not too fussed about where that happens. I'd also like to claim part of the northern shore of the inland sea, if that's alright. It would be heavily forested (mostly evergreen), and frigid. Short summers and long winters, as well as high humidity due to the "lake effect" (well, more of an inland sea effect). If that can fit in. So basically, a swathe of warm, mediterranean land along the southern shore, and a small portion of frigid conifer forest along the northern shore. I have in mind something similar to Minnesota in terms of climate. Also, I'm not going to bother sending you the part I have mapped out. It's not enough to worry about - I can adapt my civilizations to your map.
  15. RP time! Sheon Idris stood on the edge of the cliff, frowning. Around him, the Shattered Plains stretched into the distance. He eyed the far-off speck that was the war-camp of Dalinar Kholin. At least the scheme to assassinate the brightlord had failed. He laughed as he remembered the rumors about his own death that had circulated the camp. "Fainted when confronted with a Shardblade!" Nobody had seen him since. They probably assumed he had been one of the casualties. As if he, Sheon Idris, King of Arelon and trained Jindo warrior, would have been afraid of a mere shardbearer. Even if he had been living as a grocer in Arelon before that... But it fit the persona he had been cultivating there - bookish, timid, analytical but easily startled. Yes, the Sheon they knew in the warcamps might well have done something like that. He tossed a pinch of dust in the air, watching as it molded itself into the figure of a skinny man falling to the ground. A little Lightweaving had been more than convincing enough, and it saved him from the awkwardness of having to explain why the Shardblade completely failed to kill him. And it has saved him the Investiture it would have cost to heal from that wound. He turned again to look at the warcamp. His work wasn't done here, yet, but he would have to take a brief hiatus. This business with Odium was far more pressing. He would have to come back, though. But how? Being a noble had been fine, but rather boring, honestly. Almost as bad as being a grocer in Arelon had been. The King's Wit, though, now there was a job worthy of his talents. He'd have to pull some strings when he came back to the camp. Smiling to himself, satisfied, he took a step off of the cliff and vanished. Cold frost crystallized where he had been.
  16. I am waiting for the new continent. I don't know about anyone else.
  17. Gotcha. I only have a southern shore of an inland sea mapped out, so tomorrow I'll scan a map of it and PM it to you. The whole area is roughly on the order of 400-500 miles, maybe 650 at the outside. It involves an area much like the Great Plains of North America, as well as a large wetland area at the delta of a river. Shouldn't be too hard to work in, and I can deal with whatever tweaks you need to do. After that, I'll leave mapping alone for this project. Sorry, didn't mean to step on toes. I'll do that, then. Mostly, I just want a more experienced eye to check my climatology.
  18. Alrighty. Here goes the next installment of The Soruukan Chronicles. First off, a vote. I can't seem to keep my spelling straight, and now I'd like to ask about the name. Do you prefer it spelled Soruukan, or Sorukaan? Those are the two that seem to be going back and forth with me... Anyways, time for: Culture and Society Aaaand, my break's over. Tune in next time for Religion!
