Welp...that was less than I was hoping for. Wilson asked me not to protect her, but to protect a separate player instead. Looks like I should have stuck with my gut feeling there. At this point, she wanted to die, though (she stays in the running for the dodo award that way). She asked me to roleblock Clanky again this cycle, but obviously the kills went through anyways. For full disclosure, I'm Neutral again, because Mail's (still) a troll. I'm nearly certain that Mail's working with the OC's, but he hasn't joined them officially (he couldn't keep making me neutral if he had). I'd recommend killing him, but we can't afford to waste a lynch on him. If we kill another OC without winning, then we can target him with extreme prejudice. Clanky, I'm sorry. That's another set of things I should have listened to my gut about. I'd been arguing for your possible innocence to Wilson for a couple cycles, but I deferred to her judgement. If I hadn't, maybe you would have blocked phatt's kills earlier. Either way, I trust you now. There is only one Odium's Champion left, and this was the last cycle they could use the investment kill. So they are limited to one Shard-kill now. To the new Cultivation, I'd like to be in a PM with Kipper and Clanky, if that's not too presumptuous of me to ask.

Dear cultivation, I would be much obliged to you if you would be willing to instantiate a new PM between myself, Wilson, Kipper, and you. (If you'd rather not be a part of it, that's fine as well, one with Kipper and Wilson and myself would be fine.) Thank you.

I like it quite a bit. I wanted to suggest that all mammals were seeded at the same time as humans, but was afraid it night be too interventionist. Reading your summary, though, it flows naturally in. I like it a lot.

I wasn't aware that humans came from across the sea. The current working model (obviously not set in stone) was that humans were not native to this world. How long ago was this catastrophic event? I'm not sure what I think about a cataclysmic, continent-spanning war. That presupposes a level of past unity (on both the humans and Dromeans) that at the least doesn't match what is happening now. And we are looking at widely varied human cultures here. On the whole, I think I prefer a gradual colonization model on the human's part. Also, when you say dinosaurs, are you taking about Dromeans? Because they are the only ones so far that are sentient and would be able to have a war with humans. The rest of the dinosaurs described so far are either herd beats or predators. They would be able to participate in a war about as well as cows or bears. In response to kobold's question, I am in favor of widespread dinosaurs (above and beyond the sentient Dromeans). The model I've been working on has a balance of saurian megafauna and mammalian beasts. Later tonight, probably, I'll post some of my fauna ideas for the northern continent, as well as specifically delineating my areas there. But, to whet the appetite, I've got domesticated hadrosaurs and large cervids as the primary food source of the Sorukaana, titanosaurs both domestic and wild (sometimes used for war), and perhaps even a few ceratopsians. The colder northern forests are home to some hypsilophodontids, as well as some medium sized mammals. I'm not sure how to evolutionarily justify large mammals alongside large dinosaurs, but I'm sure it can be worked out.

Alright, Mail, the sarmu is in now. Mek, I'll get the sniffler as soon as I can. Is there detailed information in the main thread? If so, can you link me there to save searching through all of it?

Both. In Nazi Germany, it was about descent, not religion. If your mother was a Jew, you went to the concentration camp without regard to your faith. Earlier pogroms were more oriented towards religion - if a Jew converted to Christianity in Russia, they would be spared the pogroms.

Also, if you are burning Atium, the rules say that you kill anyone who targets you with any action. So if I try to protect someone who is burning atium, they kill me? If I am smoking them, they kill me? If I am Rioting or Soothing them, they kill me? Just checking to see that I have this right.

Note: I do not mean to offend anyone by saying this. I certainly don't want anyone to think that I am speaking ill of their country. I don't mean to - since 1945, the vast majority of people have taken a long, hard look at their beliefs and prejudices about Jews and come out the other side with much less prejudiced viewpoints. The horror of the Holocaust shocked a lot of people (including Americans) out of their sentiments, because it showed them just how dark a path those went down. But these dark moments are still part of our history, just like the American treatment of slaves and the massacre of native peoples in North and South America are part of our history. We dare not ignore them. We don't have to be enslaved to the evils in our past, but we must be aware of them so that they do not happen again, and so that we can help alleviate their effects in the present.

So Bruno was my dad and I misremembering Bratislava, in Slovakia. And Kalinin is a mangling of Kaliningrad, which is actually a Russian enclave, but we remembered it as the capital of Estonia, which is Tallinn. (Either that or my dad said Tallinn, and I misheard him, we were on the phone with a not-entirely-clear connection). I could have sworn Bern was Switzerland's capital - a quick look on Wikipedia says that there is no capital de jure, but that Bern is the de facto capital. About The Hague...yeah, that was just us getting it wrong. Looks like it was Amsterdam. I think I'm required to post a funny picture now, so here goes:

In general, concentration camps are where you round up a lot of your own people who are perceived as threatening for some reason (racial/religious/national identity - the exact reason doesn't matter, they just have to be some "other"). You put them in a place where they can't cause any trouble, and place guards over them. Sometimes you use them for forced labor, though not always. Conditions vary from being bearable (like the American camps in WWII) to intolerable (like Soviet gulags). America did that to Japanese-Americans during WWII, the Soviets did it to political dissidents all over the place. Orlion notes that the British used it in South Africa. Nazi Germany was uniquely evil in that their concentration camps were turned into machines for genocide - most aren't. But the basic idea started out the same. Round up all of your undesirables and put them in a place where nobody can see them and they can't do any theoretical harm to you. EDIT: Ninja'ed by Twi Concentration camps are not a pleasant subject, even the more benign ones. But they happened, and could potentially happen again if public sentiment swings in certain ways.

Still Having a Bad Day? Exchange Your Rants For Hugs Here!
Seonid replied to Silverblade5's topic in General Discussion
Well, it's over, and I didn't make a complete fool of myself (although I felt like it at some points)... Thanks for the encouraging words. She was very nice, and very understanding. It didn't help that I took us off the script a couple of times, but I learned a lot. -
Still Having a Bad Day? Exchange Your Rants For Hugs Here!
Seonid replied to Silverblade5's topic in General Discussion
So I have my first TalkAbroad session for Arabic in about 10 minutes. I have to essentially get on Skype and talk with an Arabic speaker from Tunisia for a half an hour, and I'm extremely nervous. I have gone through all of the questions my professor has provided, and I've written out answers to them to help me process this, but the nervousness is starting to grow into panic... Not that writing it down here helps anything, but I figured that this was as good as place as any for it. -
Whoops, sorry Kobold. Didn't realize I'd be stepping on your toes there. I thought I had a go-ahead from you. That was my bad... Anyways, I edited the post title, and I'll post more thoughts here on my non-sapient critters of the north when I have more time.

And since I saw more Diaemus threads start popping up, and since there hasn't been anything but a positive response to the idea of a Life in Diaemus thread, I posted it here.

Welcome everyone, to the general thread about Life on Diaemus! Here you will find a master list of all of the inhabitants of Diaemus, sentient and not, as well as discussion on possible new life forms, various ranges and overlaps between species, and how they interact with the magic system. Even better, it's all conveniently gathered into one place! By way of bookkeeping, the main information thread can be found here, and a discussion of maps and claimed areas can be found here. Sapient Species Non-Sapient Species This is all of the detailed information I could find on various species. As this project grows, I'll separate these out into regional variations, given that we have tundra-dwellers next to steppe-dwellers all mixed up with everything else. But for now, since I don't have enough time for a massive organizational project, here we go. If I've missed one of your creatures, post it's profile here in this thread and I will eventually get it into the OP. I hope that this will become the go-to resource for all of our different species.

Skitches are certainly archosaurs generally, and trace their lineage back to a common ancestor with both Dromeans and Haornithi. I envision Permian-like ancestors to them. Also, don't worry about trying to get the science right. In my view, there's no such thing as too much reason and science in worldbuilding. There is only "not enough," and "I need to stop worldbuilding and actually start writing."

Thank you, Sir Jerric, that map looks amazing. When I'm not on my mobile anymore, I'll put in a claim for a couple spots in the north. While I'm waiting for feedback on whether or not to start a new thread to collate all of the Diaemian fauna in one, easily accessible place, I'll post a brief profile of my second intelligent race - the Haornithi. Haornithi The Haornithi are a small, avian race standing no more than 130 centimeters high and massing between 35 and 45 kilos. They likely share some distant common ancestor with the Dromeans, but are certainly not a close relation. The Haornithi, unlike their relatives both avian and saurian, stands fully erect on its feet, which have for claws (three forward facing, one back). Their wings have a ball joint not unlike the Dromean shoulder joint, which shows them a full range of motion. Their finger-claws are quite agile, and the innermost one has a superb range of motion, allowing it to function practically as if it were an opposable digit. Both their shoulder and elbow Jon's are capable of semi-flight, which restricts the range of motion but makes flight much more energy-efficient. They tend to fly horizontally, where they can use their large, broad tail feathers to control their motion. Haornithi are restricted to a single mountain range on the northern continent, and generally live in clans of 20 to 50 individuals. However, there do exist a few large population groups, and at least three of them have built cities song the high ledges of the mountains, where there is no easy land access. Haornithi are very clever with their hands, and often build flight aids, including glider wins that let them free up their arms during long flights. Hope y'all enjoyed that one too!

Lindel, no need to modify your concept - we could easily have different breeds that differ cosmetically, much like modern dogs. Another important feature of my Skitches that I forgot - they have a prominent secondary sexual characteristic - the adult males have large, heavy horns protruding above their eye sockets. Their ancestors may have used them during mating contests, but modern Skitches use them mostly in self-defense. The Sorukaana cut off these horns after taking a Skitch slave - it has a very humiliating and demoralizing effect without preventing them from breeding. The females have much smaller horns, small enough that slave-takers file them down instead of cutting them off. Finally, a question. I was thinking of starting a second thread to keep track of all of the information about the creatures of Diaemus, sapient and non. That way it would be easy to see what the fauna look like at various places, and to see where bleed over might happen between regions. Would anybody have a problem with me doing that? Oh, and Lindel answered your question correctly, Venture.

Checked with Honor, and they didn't lash Wilson last night. So that means I wasn't roleblocked by Clanky (which I've been afraid of), and that that was my lashing on Wilson. And just for everyone's information, this is the third cycle I've been made neutral. I will invest in Wilson again, like I have the last 2 cycles. And I'll go back to Team Village, like I have the last 2 cycles. Not going to name names, but somebody's a troll...

Well this died quickly... I guess I'll just drop one of my minor sentient races in to test the waters. Skitches Skitches are large, reptilian sentients who stand about 2 to 3 meters tall when fully erect, and mass between 150 and 200 kg when fully grown. Their scaly skin is quite hard, and serves as a natural armor against their predators. Skitches are comfortable moving around on their hind limbs only, but they can move at a much greater pace on all fours, Their arms are have less musculature than their legs, but to a much less significant degree than either Dromeans or humans. Their tail is about a meter long, and is highly flexible. Skitches are partially aquatic, and primarily inhabit the marshes and other wetlands around the northern inland sea that separates the two continents, as well as the waterstreams and lakes of the taiga further to the north. They are omnivorous, and their primary sustenance is fish, small mammals, and several species of underwater plants that they cultivate in and near their communities. Many Skitches also "herd" schools of fish in the lakes and shallow seas of their preferred habitats. A skitch is air-breathing, not amphibious, but can hold their breath for hours at a time. Their homes are built along the waters edge or in the shallows, with places for sleeping above the water level, but most of their life is spent underwater. Their societies range from primitive tribal arrangements to sophisticated city-states with complex social systems. They are able to interact with lumuoles in a similar manner to the Dromeans, and do so primarily by ingestion. Skitches are among the most anthropomorphic of the northern sapient races, and in combat they tend to use weapons that would be familiar to humans, although sized for their massive bulk. Their fighting styles, however, are unique, and incorporate both natural claws and their heavy, flexible tail. A single Skitch is a fearsome opponent for any sapient creature.

My apologies, Clanky, but I roleblocked you last night. Wilson found you suspicious, and I followed through on that. She knew about it. I didn't want a roleblock on myself and my lashing, which was all that stood between Wilson and Odium last night. As for me, I vote phattemer
