Somehow, I managed to hit myself in the face with my racquetball racquet today. I think it bounced off of a wall or something. But now my nose is swelling up... -

Hmm...I might have to do 3 or 4 of these - one for each of my settings. But we'll start with just one. Since most of y'all have heard of Edassa, I'll go with the City of Mortals for now. Edassa, Hathurin, and the Starnet will come later, if anyone is interested. 1. The capital of the Dominion of Terra is Altierra, a vast complex of networked orbital habitats and space stations orbiting the third planet of the Sol System. It houses almost a billion inhabitants, and every one of them is employed by the Dominion. 2. No human is permitted to set foot on the soil of Terra except the Domin Prime, and even then, the Domin is permitted only to do so once, to perform the ritual of ascension. The priests who perform the ritual never leave the wild planet. 3. The City of Mortals has extant examples of more than a thousand sentient species, most of which are extinct in the Material Realm. In addition, immortal visitors from almost all of the Outer Realms can be seen passing through at various times. 4. The peryian colonies are a form of life unique to the City, and are animated by powerful Unmanifested spirits minimally bound to life shells. With the right knowledge, and the right price, a mortal can access the excess power of the spirit and perform wild feats of magic. Peryian magic is actually the official currency of the city - although it can be exhanged for physical currency at any Banking Guild building. 5. Time flows differently and chaotically between the City of Mortals and other Realms (although it does always move forward). For a hefty price, powerful magic-workers from the Guild of Wizardry can sync time for the duration of a visit, but this is a delicate process. A single mis-pronounced syllable can result in the subject aging at the rate that their Realm is proceeding relative to the City. More than one mortal has abruptly aged into dust this way. The Guild disclaims all liability for accidents of this nature, even if mal-intent can be proven. 6. Related to the last point, if no visitors from your destination realm have entered the City since your arrival, the Guild can arrange for your return to your realm nearly upon the instant of your departure. If another visitor has come since then, the Guild can only return you to the instant of that visitor’s departure. 7. When asked if the quantum causality protection conjecture was an actual physical law, or if it was just another in the long list of not-officially-confirmed-but-widely-known-anyways secretive and manipulative Guild policies, an official spokesman declined comment. Just like last time. And the time before. 8. Mortals seldom die of age in the City of Mortals, and the health care is sufficiently advanced that they don’t often die of other natural causes, either. The leading cause of death in the city is magical accidents, although murder is in a very close second place. 9. The grand marketplaces in the City are one of the wonders of all the Realms. Nearly anything is accepted as currency, and immortals often pay with rare artifacts from the Outer Realms. 10. Despite two very high-profile interventions by a physically manifesting god into their historical affairs, the Dominion of Terra has a primarily atheist population. The inhabitants of the Outer Realms find this an endless source of amusement.

This looks awesome! I've been waiting for this game since I first read about it. But, like Kas, I'm in the middle of waaaay too much and find that I use SE as an excuse for procrastination and the like. I'd like to request a spec doc seat, though.- 1686 replies

Hmm...is there still interest in this? If there is, let's try and get this going. I'm open in general on Saturdays (and really only then). Is there anyone up here that might be interested in getting together one Saturday a month?

That's been my interpretation of Feruchemical mass storage - changing the strength of the Feruchemist's interaction with the Higgs field. Feruchemy appears to affect both gravitational mass and inertial mass, but it doesn't seem to affect density (at least in terms of how well bullets can pass through the person storing/tapping - no idea how it would affect buoyancy which also is determined by density). That might be a good question to ask Brandon - could a Feruchemist storing in iron float better?
-
The intention was that they were attacked once for each Outed player they created. I agree that the wording was quite unclear. Fixed that, and added the secondary win condition.
-
I...hadn't even thought of that. It's not a good situation, really. Hmm...here's a thought on closing that hole: what if the kills were persistent, too? Something like "every night cycle, you receive one attack for each Outed Player still living." The other option would be to make dying to one of these kills a secondary win condition. So, if you die to a kill from having outed a player, you win even if your team loses. But if you live to the end of the game, you can still win with your team. I think I like the second option better.
-
Thanks! Fixed it

That seems like a very interesting game, dow. I liked the ideas you talked about in the Dead Doc for LG14, and I like the fleshing out you've done here. As far as balance goes, I'd say have both defenders and seekers add an investment to themselves if they use their ability, but don't make it public which votes added investments and which didn't. That way, if 5 people vote but the target only gets +4 investments, the Seeker has got to be one of the 5, but isn't revealed automatically. There are enough investment removing roles that the Defender can take having an investment token added for using their ability. The roles that use up their investments are good as they are, I think, because the Eliminators can add 1 investment per player targeting them. If the role is an Eliminator role, there should be enough voters to take them out. But that's just my perception here. I'd like to hear what more experienced players have to say about it. On another subject - I put together a half-sequel, half-satire of LG14 in the Dead Doc. It's a normal Village/Eliminator game, with a lot of elements drawn from Joe's LG10 and LG14 (as is appropriate, I hope, for a sequel - I also draw on the lore established by Joe's LG about Hoid vs. the 17th Shard). Here's the more polished version. I'd like some feedback on it from the more experienced players. To Reforge a God

I've been on the double Zinc train since I first thought of waning to be a Compounder. For me, the whole Rioting thing would be a sideshow. I'm after the mental speed. But my goals with it would be rather mundane - I'd want it so I could work out the details of my worldbuilding better and tighter, and to lower the negative impact of distractions on my work. I'd also use it some in my physics research, too. Doing tensor calculus in my head would be extremely useful for that.

I can't believe nobody's posted anything about this yet! So I will. The new Star Wars trailer came out last night, and it's as awesome as I could have hoped for! Who else liked the trailer? EDIT: This is now the official star wars episode VII discussion thread. There can only be 1. No more, no less. Unless there are two. In which case, this thread is the master, not the apprentice.

Yeah, frybread is one of the most amazing things in the world. My mom used to make it for us. We had frybread tacos, or just ate it with honey and butter. Either way, it never lasted long. -
I'm glad to be of service. I wish you the best in your search. From personal experience, it's tough at times, trying to sort out what you believe. If you're curious about the rest of Mormon beliefs (the ones that are still foundational and important, but have to do with human history and divine interaction - and therefore don't contribute much to a discussion on the point of the universe ), feel free to drop me a PM. I love these types of conversations (actually, enough that religious studies is one of the college degrees I'm working towards).
-
I'm a Mormon, like Mek. The fundamental truth claims of my religion include a lot of specific assertions about divine intrusion into human history, but most of that isn't really relevant to the present conversation. The relevant truth claims involve the existence of a divine Being (actually, a divine Couple), whose dedicated purpose is to help intelligent life to grow into divinity. That's the purpose I see in the universe - providing a place for intelligent life to come to be and to gain the experience and compassion needed to be able to be "good" holders of divinity. Meaning in Mormonism is found primarily in the development of relationships. Family bonds, friendship, etc. All these are understood to be at least potentially permanent. (And given Mormonism's Universalist leanings, all or almost all such are functionally permanent.) TL;DR - The purpose of the universe is to create gods and goddesses (specifically, gods and goddesses who don't accuse their power), and relationships between people is what makes that purpose worth pursuing/gives meaning to that purpose.
-
Personally, I'm going to respectfully disagree on the fundamental meaninglessness of the universe. I agree with Kobold's assessment of nihilism as well. As far as meaning goes, I'm also going to dispute the point that the fundamental destiny of every individual is to be forgotten in at best a few thousand years, and that the ultimate end of humanity is to have its last ages erased in the expansion of the Sun, or else to die with the rest of the universe. (Actually, as far as the heat death of the universe goes, that is by no means assured.) Of course, my disputation of these points is rooted in my belief of the perpetual existence of the soul (not in and of itself a religious belief, but in my case, it is tied to my religious faith). And my assertion of meaning in the universe is also tired to my religious faith. Since we likely disagree on the fundamental truth claims of my religion (I find them highly persuasive, but I am well aware that many do not), we are likely to remain disagreeing on these points as well. I just wanted to note that your view of the universe is not the only possible one.

Re: 3 - I'm just about never in favor of the nuclear option. I'm not going to comment on other instances of it here - suffice it to say I think that it is one of the easiest ways to kill the fun of a game. But I don't think you were referring to me here. Re: 4 - On the other hand, if I were in that situation, I can understand your frustration. (Actually, I was in your situation the cycle before I got lynched. So I have actually felt that frustration. ) Re: 1 - Yeah...that was me. Sorry. You're a better player than I gave you credit for in the doc. A much better player than I gave you credit for. My only defense is that I was mostly venting (what I perceived to be legitimate) frustration about getting lynched when I felt I shouldn't be. Funny enough, I had actually forgiven you your part before I got to the dead doc, Kipper. I was mostly just mad at Stink. And then I found out that Wilson had set up the Dominion redirect of my kill ability in order to try and either convict me or clear me, and that (she thought) it should have been blindingly obvious that I wasn't guilty because I didn't have a kill to redirect. She thought you and Stink should easily have known it. And that made me far more angry, because neither of us could see how on earth anyone could miss that a plan they had taken part in making had worked. Especially after I had worked out the whole plan and sent it to you in a PM and you dismissed it by saying that Dominion couldn't be used that way. From my perspective, it felt like you had been deliberately ignoring all the evidence just because you wanted me lynched. That was uncharitable of me to think it, and I was wrong to do so. I'm sorry. Re: 2 - In the doc, we were all aware that passing a shard the same night the kill happened wasn't going to be enough to protect against the kill. But I can see how that was a subtle point that could have been missed without asking the right questions. But mostly, for me it boils down to the same thing as Hael. I assumed that you and Stink and dow had actually been communicating. My assumptions led me to criticize you where it wasn't fully deserved. About the Ruin thing, though. Endowment used Ruin twice before Quiver was killed, by passing it to me and me passing it back. So that point, at least, should have been clear. (Specifically, that Endowment could use the Shardic power of a broken shard every time it was given to her - I'm sure we talked about that loophole in our PM. It certainly was talked about in the thread - Mailliw asked how Ruin's kill could happen a second time, and Joe said we had found a loophole.) The rest, though, was certainly me going overboard. My apologies for my part in sending undeserved abuse your way.

Fair enough. I was thinking of weapons systems, but I suppose those could be made of aluminum as well or insulated against Allomancy.
-
This is true, but if there are any non-aluminum metal parts, they could provide something to pull on. Also, unless the plane is already diving directly at you, you won't have to worry about being hit by it when you pull it out of the sky. It will still have a velocity relative to you, and so it will hit the ground somewhere else. Example: Joe, an iron compounder, sees a warplane flying directly overhead. He decides he'd rather not have it there, so he compounds weight and pulls as hard as he can. (Honestly, the plane is probably to far too affect, but we'll ignore that for now.) It immediately has a force pulling it towards his center of mass, but it still has a force in its original direction of motion, so it ends up following a circular or near-circular arc on its way to the ground. It his the ground some distance away from Joe, who walks away, satisfied with a job well done.
