@Twi.... errr, @Ookla the Pug-whisperer; you are known for being the shards favourite pug loving, probably-not-evil librarian.

@The Ooklent One - you're kind of off base on Asherah/Yahweh; Judaism didn't grow out of polytheistic Ba'al worship, but it did spend several centuries where the two religions were syncretically mixed. The Israelites came into Canaan with the Pentateuch and with a monotheistic deity; Asherah was a goddess of pre-Israelite Canaan. What happened is that over the centuries the Israelites adopted many of the pagan religious practices of the Canaanites; this often led to syncretic practice where Yahweh would be mixed with local Canaanite gods and religions. This syncretic practice is what 90% of the Old Testament prophets railed against. For the record, one of MY pet peeves is the JEDP hypothesis which claims that it was someone in Ezra or Nehemiah's time who wrote the Pentateuch. This came up in the 19th century because people didn't believe writing was invented until around the 8th century BC. Which is nonsense. Unfurtunately, the hypothesis has stuck around despite historical and archeological evidence (for example, the Pentateuch is structured in the form of a 15th century Hittite suzerainty treaty, something Moses, educated at a Hittite influence Egyptian court would have known, but Ezra or Nehemiah were born 9 centuries too late to see...)

That almost got you a downvote right there. Heathen. Blasphemer. That.... Binks.... fellow. He's barely even a character. (Please note, the above is mostly a joke. You are entitled to your opinion! However deluded.) -
Loving Viva la Stormlight, but my English nerd got tweaked by a few of the phrases - gotta maintain rhythm in lyrical poetry! Incorrigably update version under spoilers. Also a few Rosharin updates for consistency

@Bleee... cough @Ookla the Atypical Go for music. But have plans. Make sure you're qualified for a 'steady' music job too! Follow your dreams but not off a cliff @Ookla the Chibi On that note, what do you enjoy? What are you good at? More importantly, what are you passionate about?

Not sure if this belongs in the relationship thread instead, but I definitely need a hug. Just had a super detailed and realistic dream about getting back together with my ex. One of those ones where you wake up and have to sort out what's real and what's false, and it takes you a bit. Do not need this right now. It's been a year, I'm supposed to be over her by now. It's not even that I want to get back with her - before I woke up I'd sat her down in the dream and was discussing whether or not this was a good idea - might be that I'm feeling lonely. I don't know storm it all. But yeah - don't fall in love with the wrong person people; and if you do don't spend four years ignoring problems and thinking that everything will be ok cuz you're so much in love! (How could it not work out when you're in love? Storm you Disney and Hollywood) -
In a similar boat to @Ookla the Cat Lord - fairly simple and straightforward for me. As a kid, I loved to design machines (mostly weapons, but that's forgivable in a 5-15 year old). My Dad still has a 3 view drawing I did of a fighter Jet when I was 6 (Lord knows where I learned that you're supposed to do 3 view drawings of 3D objects). Went through school, really enjoyed science, especially physics. Loved high technology stuff. Still would design stuff on my own time. Ended up applying to one program in one University, because it was a ridiculously awesome looking program near where I lived, and here I am in my last year as a mechatronics engineering student. So for me it was never too difficult a choice - I always knew that I wanted to build cool things. It was just a matter of deciding what cool things I wanted to build and working towards that goal. For others, I know, it's tougher. If you're of a religious persuasion, I recommend prayer for guidance and wisdom. In the meantime, see what you enjoy, what you're good at, and what you can see yourself happy and fulfilled doing (or at least not absolutely despising) years down the road.

It's a 17th shard Holiday, in honour of Ookla the Mok, AKA Peter Ahlstrom (Sanderson's right hand man). In the old TWG forums (before the dark times, before the empire), Ahlsteom went by the username Ookla the Mok. So we celebrate him with various 'Ookla the...' usernames this time every year. Bonus points to anyone who remembers Brandon Sandersons old username -

@Ookla the Atypical - Yes, Uni is short for University. There's a distinction in my country (Canada) between colleges and Universities, so we usually differentiate them. Colleges are usually for professional and trades diplomas, or for doing pre-work before transferring to a university, whereas universities grant more traditional degree programs. -

Spent most of this year super burnt out because of this and some things that happened in my personal life. Ended going from August-August with 0 breaks. Had a break this august though, which has saved my sanity. -

If I chose to take no courses in summer it would be a full semester. However, my program makes taking no courses in the summer impossible as there are a multitude of courses only offered in the summer. You're expected to work through the year. Which means I haven't had a break from studying longer than 2.5 weeks since summer 2011. Thinking about that makes me need a hug orz. -

Nice! Southern hemisphere eh? Summer vacation will do you good! And always trust papa Tolkien. He's the best. I miss summer vacation. Haven't had one in.... 5 years? It would be fine if I were working, but I'm still in school. My uni doesn't believe in having summers off... -

@Spoolofwhool Consider your romantic feelings seriously, and as objectively as possible. Are you romantically interested in this person? When you guys hang out again, examine your own heart. How do you feel? How do you feel when you see this person? What's it like to talk to them? Be careful, be sober and be vigilant, not to hurt your own heart, to hurt their heart, or to let an opportunity that you would regret missing pass you by. Ultimately, when considering a relationship you need to think of this: 'Could I happily spend the rest of my life with this person?' If the answer is yes, then that's a good sign (not the only thing, but a major thing.) If the answer is no, then you shouldn't even consider a relationship. (Also, if you're in a relationship and you realize that you don't want to spend the rest of your life with that person, then you should end the relationship). -

@Queen Elsa Steelheart - Massive, massive hug. Three pieces of encouragement: Firstly, you will survive this and you will be better for it. Secondly: 'This too shall pass'. Because, finally, and in the words of the immortal papa Tolkien: “There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.” - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings, the Return of The King -

Don't buy it. Hoid is his own person, and his own 'side' in cosmere politics. Could he have founded the ghostbloods and then left? Yes. Could he have inspired them? Yes. Could they be mimicking or emulating him? Yes. But is he a current, active member? I doubt it. (Note his lack of friends/assistants, for one thing. Also no tattoo as far as we can tell).

Appreciate the Happy Thursday And happy thanksgiving my American sharders! (I think in other northern hemisphere countries they have various harvest festivals between Canadian and US thanksgiving?)

Oh heavens yes. We gentlemen are intelligent, thoughtful, caring creatures. We're also incredibly thick about hints. Especially romantic hints. Especially if we're shy or introverted. Especially if we're interested in the girl. It's painful, really. (Interestingly enough, I can almost always tell if a girl who I'm NOT interested in is interested in me, but I can never tell if a girl I AM interested in is interested in me. It's really quite odd). -

There's also a difference between asking someone out and testing the waters. He could be fishing to see if you like him, instead of just putting you on the spot in person. It's also possible that online is the only way he has to communicate to you privately. He may not have your number, and likely you met in a group setting (school/etc) where he has no confidence of getting you one on one without arranging to beforehand. Still, your response is simple: are you interested in him romantically? If yes, make it obvious. Are you not interested in him romantically? If yes, make it obvious. -

@Seonid /hug. It'll be done soon, and you'll have a beautiful child. And reason for both good news and for 'I'm so exhausted please help' hugs @Delightful - good for you on telling him that! Establish proper boundaries and concepts of consent. Now, it's entirely possible that he's just joking. It's also entirely possible that he's testing the waters, or that he's legitimately a jerk. You did the right thing, so don't worry about that! Now onto me. I'm sitting here bashing my head against one of the three projects I have due next week. And I started coughing last night - I haven't today, but I'm worried. Forgot to get my flu shot, I work with 100+ kids and have a tendency to get colds and flus. And I just can't afford to get sick right now. Also have an ongoing series of appointments with a neurologist over some white matter lesions I have in my brain. He's pretty sure they're nothing to be concerned about (we ruled out the really scary possible culprit, MS, a month or two ago). Still, he ordered a bunch of blood tests/etc. The results of most of them were fine, but my blood showed up as a little thin so he's redoing that test as well as getting a CT Angiogram. Again, he tells me that I almost certainly have nothing to worry about and that he's just being super thorough and double checking things, but I'm really looking forward to getting the all-clear and having this be over (not sure if I mentioned it here previously, but I spent most of the year with the spectre of possibly having MS hanging over my head. Which didn't help my overall stress none). -
So My Calculus 3 Instructor is a Sanderfan...

Too late now - finished that course a couple years ago (passed! Thank heavens for a good scale to compensate for a bad exam), and as good as Chaos seems to be, I'm not willing to travel halfway across a continent to take one course.... But if only I'd had the opportunity! Would have done much better I'm sure -
@little wilson thanks! And very well put! First past the post is fundamentally broken, and needs to be changed. It removes third party voices, forces us into a two party system. This shuts a lot of people out of having a voice, and leads to a harsh, bitter political divide. However, I think we've hijacked this thread. Could the political discussion be moved to a different thread? Mods?

I'm not sure how to feel about this thread. On the one hand, this is insanely awesome. Well done @Chaos On the other hand, the question gave me horrified flashbacks. Calc 3 and I were not friends. Not at all. (An.... interesting, new prof and a semester spent sick made for a vile combination. Fun fact - the average for the final exam was 40/180. In a class of 300. That says something. I still have nightmares of that exam). -
That looks to be closer to a Westminster style parliamentary map (what Canada/Britain have), where each small region votes for their local representative (in our case, a member of parliament. In your case, it would be a member of the electoral college). That system, while good, still suffers from problems with FPTP. Switching to a single transferable vote system or to multi member representation would both greatly help, while still giving the local regions a chance to choose their own representative! I do want to make this clear though: the USA has had a recent controversial election. That has brought this issue to the forefront of our minds. HOWEVER, this is an ongoing issue in Canada, the USA, and most any other FPTP based electoral system.
