  1. Eternal Khol is right. There used to be passwords and now there are not. I'll try to find all the instances of passwords there and remove it. Sorry about that.
  2. You now have the ability to do this in the future
  3. I've moved this to the Mistborn forum. Cheers, and welcome!
  4. You know how we say on Shardcast that we don't need rails? Well turns out we rarely had rails to begin with. Today we are taking a look at our old cosmere theories. And when I say old I mean real old, like from 2008, pre-Hero of Ages. We'll talk about some fandom history on the forums, tell you how we got into the fandom, and mock old our old theories all around. Then at the end we'll give you some advice on how you can theorycraft better. Hopefully you'll enjoy this retrospective, and I imagine eventually we'll do another one of these! If you want a Google doc with our posts so you can read the theories in full, check out here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10gjOYZtQG8OActlRHaaTstOy0eiS5lLZLBQ5f7ri8d0/edit?usp=sharing And if you want an etiquette guide on how to talk in debates or contentious discussion, check this out, written by Matt: https://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/89580-best-practices-for-posting-in-debates-or-contentious-conversations/ This episode we have Eric (Chaos), Matt (Comatose), Evgeni (Argent), and David (Windrunner), all fandom old timers! 5. The lovely Drew McCaffrey has interviewed the equally lovely Isaac Stewart, Art Director for Dragonsteel Entertainment, in a Tor.com article on the Art of the Cosmere. And if you've read a Stormlight book recently, you know there's a ton of art in it! In this interview, Drew asks about how Isaac got started with Dragonsteel, his maps, and Nazh. You should really go check it out, because it's very well done. I'm here to talk about a few tidbits at the end that might interest you about some upcoming cosmere things. Here's the quote: So there's a Mistborn Era 2 novella that Isaac would write, along with a Nazh story planned. Drew asked Isaac about other writings: Taldain stuff! Iiiinteresting. Very cool stuff that he's been working on cosmere in his own writing. Go check out the Tor.com article, it's really well done, and we didn't want you to miss it!
  6. Brandon made some comments on Facebook about this: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10157067377635009&id=621235008 Here, in particular, is a comment regarding races of characters.
  7. I wrote a news article on this. Argent made a labeled version of this: They look pretty Alethi tan to me... It's funny because in Discord, they didn't really say that they looked white at all.
  8. The Brandon news train does not stop! We have a bunch of things this week, like this spiffy Bridge Four Poster, styled like a movie poster. There's some new jewelry by Badali. Brandon's YALLFEST keynote now has a VOD. And lastly, just a reminder since it is time-sensitive: the Tor.com free Way of Kings ebook ends today. They extended their giveaway due to some site difficulties on the 4th. Badali Jewelry Steel Alphabet Bar Pendants First up, Badali Jewelry, who makes officially licensed Brandon-related jewelry (and more) has Steel Alphabet Bar Pendants. You can customize them with whatever phrase you like. On the 2.5" bar, you can get twelve symbols, and on the 2" one, nine symbols. This isn't unlike their custom Steel Alphabet rings, which are also spiffy. These bar pendants are $129 for the 2" one and $149 for the 2.5" bar. Badali Jewelry. Amusingly, they spell out "I AM A STICK EDY" and "SURVIVE". Bridge Four Poster For years, Brandon has wanted to have a movie poster showing Bridge Four. The idea was to show the bridge crew on a plateau, then have images of them as Radiants floating above. And now, such a poster exists. It will come with every anniversary edition The Way of Kings in the Kickstarter this summer. Isaac Stewart, Art Director, says: Check it out: And here's a labeled version: In case you want more information on the Kickstarter, Isaac and Kara did a livestream for JordanCon describing a bunch of details, and Paleo wrote us a great news article breaking down all the information.
  9. That's very interesting. We're updating to a new version this next month and I imagine this will change. I will definitely investigate. EDIT: Hmmm apparently I just need to make a list of questions for this. This can be done. Not quite sure why the navbar is above this window; that's uncommon for the sort of pop-ups IPS does.
  10. It's caw, like I'm a bird. Caw, caw! It's a really dumb Galaxy Quest reference.
  11. Apparently this was a very popular event so they are extending the deal for another day while they sort out technical details. It seems to be doing better now:
  12. I've added this to the article. I suspect that's because Tor only has rights to distribute in NA, and also possibly rules about giveaways and lotteries. My impression is that they worked with Isaac to make them canonical.
  13. Tor.com's eBook Club is giving away The Way of Kings, the first Stormlight Archive book, on May 4th. It's super easy, all you need to do is sign up for Tor.com's eBook Club mailing list and you'll receive it on May 4th. Nice! (Update: turns out, this was a very popular event and Tor's site crashed for a bit, so they are extending the deal for another day through May 5th. The site seems to be doing better now.) It's only available for US and Canada (since Tor only has rights to distribute it there). Cosmere.es Interview with Brotherwise Games on Call to Adventure: Stormlight Also this week, the wonderful Spanish fansite for the cosmere, cosmere.es, did an interview with one of the founders of Brotherwise Games on creating the Call to Adventure: Stormlight board game. You can check it out here: I bring this up, because there is some phenomenal card art that they unveiled. You can check out the full gallery here. Brotherwise Games got all sorts of incredible artists in the community and are very proud of their card art, and they should be! For example, check out this Hoid: Art by Ari Ibarra Check out this image of the Honorblades left behind in the prelude of Stormlight Archive: Art by Antti Hakosaari SO COOL. That image is especially cool because Brotherwise Games worked with Isaac Stewart at Dragonsteel to make these canonically accurate Honorblades. You can see the Radiant order glyphs on each of them (as well as Surge glyphs on some). In case you'd like a labeled one saying which Herald's Honorblades these are: Cool! What do you think of all the art?
  14. I think Mestiv merely spoke a bit imprecisely. There is an 18+ channel, but we don't share NSFW images/fanfics there. It is not a pornography channel. Mestiv also, separately, is saying that such fan art and fanfic exist, but we do not share them. Does that make sense?
  15. So on the 17th Shard discord server there is an opt-in 18+ which allows swearing and discussion of more mature content, however, NSFW art cannot be shared there, either. There are many different cosmere Discords. The one where we run, you won't be able to share NSFW art. Our 18+ channel is more about mature discussion about more serious topics, as there are younger members of the site, so we try to keep things clean. It is given out by moderator discretion. No NSFW images there. What's the confusion?
  16. Have you missed PedantiCast? Well, then you're ready for this episode! Today we are talking in-depth about the magic in Warbreaker. We talk about Awakening and BioChromatic Breaths. We discuss the Heightenings and more. Also, surprisingly, lizards, and Ian returns with new pedantry. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Evgeni (Argent), and David (Windrunner). 17. Hi! Just so you know, you can hit the + next to the Quote button to quote multiple people at the same time. We'd prefer you do this than double post.
  18. @SingingMosaic It is my sincerest apologies that it has taken me so long to respond. I admit, I have not used screen readers. Our software has some custom modifications but is predominantly created by Invision Power Suite. I am not sure how to implement the fixes you need, and the more things we do custom, the harder it is to update the software. We are on a bit older software version than we should, and I can hope that a newer version will be better for screen readers. I honestly don't know. I know that is an extremely disappointing response that is basically a shrug, but I will definitely contact you when we do some software updates to see if things improve. I will also try to be cognizant of this when I make customizations to the default theme, so I don't inadvertently break something for you.
  19. Well, the thing is, five is a lot of pinned topics. I was hoping that the navigation would be explanation enough on it.
  20. I think the real problem is that Brandon had a WoB about there being a "universal donor" which... really doesn't work: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/322/#e9237
  21. News time! The UK cover for Rhythm of War, the fourth Stormlight Archive book, has been revealed. What do you think of it? I'm told by Ben (a fan of the UK covers) that generally UK covers don't depict any particular scene but more are trying to convey an idea. I'm not sure how much analysis we can get out of this one. What are your thoughts on the cover? Brandon also linked to Waterstones's page on Rhythm of War, which explained how you can preorder a signed copy of the book. Neat! In other news, JordanCon is all online this year for obvious reasons, but that doesn't mean there's nothing going on. JordanCon is doing a few livestreams, and one in particular is happening tomorrow, April 17th, with Dragonsteel's Isaac and Kara. They are going to discuss the Kickstarter for The Way of Kings leatherbound and goodies within it. It will happen from 3pm-4pm Eastern time. (EDIT: there used to be a Zoom link for this but it appears the link was removed. I'm told there will be a livestream on YouTube.) Isaac is also going to be on cosmere.es, the Spanish cosmere fansite, this Saturday. We don't have a lot of details quite yet as that's a very new announcement, but you can check information on their Instagram. Lastly, we did a big overhaul on our 17th Shard rules, including a new, extensive Code of Conduct and more. Check it out! Here's the full cover art:
  22. I'd still assume people could write a sentence stating support or interest when relevant. For article comments, that's fine, though upvoting will come back this summer, so don't worry too much about this. Please note that the policy here is not actually different from the old spam policy, so nothing is actually different.
  23. Forum Games is separate from this since it does not increase post count, but in book discussion, someone posting "Nice" with nothing else has no value, and should be discouraged. It's like someone posting "First" on a YouTube video. Does that make sense? I'm not entirely sure what your second line means in this context.
  24. Hi everyone! We have done a massive rules overhaul today. That's for the best since the rules have... not exactly had an extensive rewrite since 2011. 17th Shard has changed a lot since then, and our community is a lot bigger now. So let me go through the highlights of what we did. We've expanded our rule that basically said "be respectful" into a much longer Code of Conduct. It explains our expectations for all members in much more detail. Things in that topic are things we will moderate. It also has a very expansive anti-harassment policy, how to report things, as well as a description on how moderation works, and common actions we will take on moderation. Realistically all of these things are things we have had before, but hopefully a much more detailed description of such things will help us as we get into another influx of new members for Rhythm of War. I want to make special mention that in the Code of Conduct, there is now a completely anonymous way to report things, should you need. We realized with our strong anti-harassment policy we did not have a mechanism for this, so we've created one. Next, we have put a lot of the administrative policies into a Policies topic. These are policies you should follow, describing our rules about double posts, signatures, spoiler policy, but for the most part you wouldn't be moderated if you broke those rules on occasion. (Repeated offenses might lead to moderation, however.) Please give a huge thanks to LadyLameness for her hard work on these documents. These were a team effort and a lot of drafting on these happened, but she's the one who put in a TON of time in making these documents amazing. But wait, there's more! There is also a Best Practices for Posting in Debates thread that Comatose has written for your advice. These topics, with our original forum introduction and how/to (finally updated!), is pinned in the 17S Discussion forum. Discord rules have also been updated, too! Though those topics are closed please feel to comment here on any of these things. Much of this should be expected stuff that we've already done, but expanded in a clearer way. We're here to answer questions though!
