Hello everyone! We have some pretty exciting news for you today: we are going to change the logos across 17th Shard, the Coppermind, and Arcanum! These new logos are made by Raul Chaves, who we hired based off a brand identity for Allomancy that he did. We've wanted to make our logos more modern for quite a while, and I hope you'll agree that they turned out awesome: We have had the same logo for 17th Shard since 2016, the iconic glass shard with the 17 broken into pieces over it, and that 2016 logo wasn't very different from our original 2010 design. Both were made by Will Raboin (Shivertongue on the forums, but he's been out of the fandom for some time), and I have always been fond of them. But, we wanted to make the 17th Shard logo flatter and more modern. We also wanted a simpler silhouette, which has a few advantages, in particular, future merchandise possibilities. The old look was quite poor for merch as it did not work well in monochrome, and required a pretty specific color scheme to be visible. You couldn't exactly put the old logo on a dark background! Also, the wordmark (that is, the text on the logo) was a bit too complicated, with a gradient on the word "Shard." We still wanted to try and evoke some of the same feel of the old logo though, with a similar shape that also evokes a bit of shattering. Another benefit to this logo refresh was that it allowed us to start the process of unifying the design of 17th Shard, the Coppermind Wiki, and Arcanum, so that all our three sites feel more cohesive together. Now we have the common silhouette on all sites, with the same accent gold color. The Coppermind logo was... very old, and actually based off of the 2010 17th Shard logo, which had a green glowing gradient around the broken glass. Yikes, that was old. It's a huge improvement to get this updated, since realistically, even in 2010, we didn't love the Coppermind logo. We wanted to evoke a symbol from the Steel Alphabet, but also not use that icon directly. Arcanum's logo is the most recent of our three logos, coming out in 2017. This logo is my favorite of our three, and actually inspired the designs. The old logo was made by KChan--another retired staff member who was on some earlier Shardcasts, and who helped with a lot of colors on 17th Shard--who had the great idea of putting an A inside the cosmere logo. I love the Arcanum logo, but there are some problems with doing that. The cosmere symbol isn't easily scalable to a small icon, and also, having the art directly from the books in the logos would lead to issues in future merchandise. We still wanted to keep that A symbol very visible, as that's the defining feature of the current logo. One other advantage to a flatter design is that it allows us to adapt the logo to fit with various background schemes, such as a dark colored shirt vs. a light colored shirt, or an eventual "dark mode" on our websites. In particular, Arcanum will still have a solid dark color in its header, but you can still immediately recognize this as the Arcanum logo: We will be updating our logos on these sites, as well as our social media icons and Discord server icons, within the next week or so. Arcanum, in particular, will be refreshed with a green aesthetic over its current blue, as 17th Shard will have a blue theme and we want each color scheme to be distinct. Here are some screenshots of how they might look on the sites themselves (but know these are subject to change): Let us know what you think in the comments! Having our three main websites use a similar design language will really help tie them together, but the logos are just one part of that process. You can expect as things move forward that 17th Shard, the Coppermind, and Arcanum will start to have their overall designs change as well so things feel cohesive, but that's going to be a while away. Another long-term goal is to have some merchandise to sell eventually. But, in the meantime, we loved how these logos turned out so much that we want to unveil them now, and bigger redesigns will come much later. Thank you to Raul for some truly fantastic work! Every penny spent on this was well worth it.

Is "Let's go Brandon" a slogan used for Sanderson?
Chaos replied to samsocial's topic in General Brandon Discussion
No politics on 17th Shard, please! -
ReDawn, the second of the Skyward Flight novellas came out on October 26th, and so we're here with another bonus Shardcast doing our reactions! It's not very "mini" of a mini-episode, but I guess under two hours is mini for us. We have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent), Jessie (LadyLameness), and Marvin (Paleo)! It's October, the spoopy season, so let's do an episode on Brandon's use of horror in his works! This one has spoilers for uh basically every Brandon's works. We go into tons of different horror types and more, and explore how Brandon uses these elements in his books. This episode, we have Ian (Weiry) hosting, along with Evgeni (Argent), Matt (Comatose), and Kadie (Ene)! 01:11 Spoiler Warning 01:40 Content Warning 02:34 What is genre? 08:05 Cast Experiences with Horror 18:33 Cast Experiences with Brandon Horror 29:10 Types of Horror Used by Brandon 30:20 Cosmic Horror 41:27 Body Horror 58:40 Dark Fantasy 1:05:41 Folk Horror 1:17:11 Ghost Stories 1:24:29 Gothic Horror 1:35:57 Disaster Horror 1:45:02 Psychological Horror 1:56:54 Slasher Horror 2:02:59 Who's That Cosmere Character Terrifying but amazing thumbnail image from Petar Penev, who did incredible art of the Re-Shephir fight at the beginning of Oathbringer. We used to be pretty lax about necroposting for the reasons you stated, and I like to still think we are much laxer than many other forums. (Remember, Reddit automatically archives things after six months!) We absolutely realize that many topics can have a very long shelf-life. Before our rules revamp last year, we explicitly said that many times posting in old topics can be relevant! Our current rules say: But let me go into a bit more detail here. Closing older topics is actually a newer thing for 17S! I don't think we did it at all prior to 2020. However, there were many times in the past few years where a newer member presumably gets to a topic via Google or something, and one of a few things can happen. They can respond to a very old topic, and these sorts of things can happen: Responding with a generic comment that doesn't really add to the discussion. (Like "I agree!" or things like that.) Responding with a WoB or book content that is much more recent than the original topic. Now, that could be good or bad, but if a topic is from 2016, pre-Oathbringer and the entire premise of the conversation was on Words of Radiance knowledge... like lets say it was a 2016 topic speculating on the Unmade. It's kind of pointless for a member to be, "Well actually, the Unmade are these!" several years later. Yes, everyone in the original discussion would agree, but it's not really helpful. (That's not to say that new stuff couldn't add to discussions, but sometimes discussions have run out their course.) This did happen more and more frequently as time progressed. There is a small subset of users who got extremely irritated with new members for doing this, even though staff didn't really make a big deal of it. (We did discourage those long-time members from making comments to the new members who made a necropost like these.) So while we definitely realize that theory topics and others can have a really long lifetime, maybe having every topic from the forum's inception in 2010 open for anyone to respond to is not necessarily optimal either. There is something to be said to not having topics open for too long, which I have grown to appreciate in Reddit over the years. Having the same active/popular topics at the top of a forum for months and months isn't necessarily great, as smaller topics can get lost in the midst of it. Invision Power Suite, our software, doesn't have an automatic way to lock old topics, so I began doing this manually. I think this is most important to close older Stormlight topics more frequently. So right now, topics are open from about March 2020 and on in Stormlight. On other forums, especially like Elantris and Warbreaker, it's definitely trickier to decide when topics should be closed, but also, if a topic hasn't had responses in multiple years, I don't think it's a huge loss to close it. I have given generally more time to noncosmere, since there is much less discussion on those things. So where is the line? It's kind of hard to say. I'm happy to discuss it! Also, as the rules state, we are perfectly happy reopening certain topics if needed!

We love Brandon Sanderson here; that's why we've done over a hundred and fifty of these Shardcasts. But you know, we have some beefs too. We did a Cosmere Beefs episode long ago in 2018, and so it's time for some new (and updated) beefs for 2021, with some of our newer cast members as well! We have some funny beefs along with some serious ones too, but we hope our complaining is entertaining! Put your beefs in the comments; we'd love to read yours! There are some Skyward spoilers in addition to cosmere ones, which we have put on screen so you can skip past (or you can look at the chapters). This episode we have a few returners, Eric (Chaos) and Alyx (Feather), who has some hilarious reactions during WTCC. Then we have people who weren't on our first beefcast: Shannon (Grey), Jessie (Lady Lameness), Ala (Rasarr), and joining us for the first time on the show, Payden (Otto Didact)! Great call; I put in Starsight and Skyward novellas in. I guess I didn't think about this because it's noncosmere (so my brain sort of defaulted to putting in the cosmere releases), but Skyward is Brandon's biggest noncosmere stuff at this stage. I didn't put in Skyward since there'd obviously be no Skyward articles prior to that.

Sunreach, the first of the Skyward Flight novellas, came out last week, and so here's a bonus, "shorter" Shardcast on us discussing this novella! Turns out it's pretty great. There will still be a regular episode this weekend. On this episode, we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Marvin (Paleo) who brought along his slug friend, and Ala (Rasarr)! Yes, I know this is already longer than many podcasts but shhh, it's short for us. Under 75 minutes? So short! Yeah, I agree; we should have touched on that. It's pretty tough outlining these massive character episodes, because it feels like we will always miss things. Sure, that's totally fair. I think post-RoW he's much more suited for one, but indeed you are right, Shallan is a very good counterexample. There are also a lot of ways a relationship should colossally blow up in Kaladin's face, though! At least in my experience--and this is only my personal experience and everyone's experience varies--I had a lot of failed relationships until I got my depression more under control. There's surely a lot of other factors that aren't about depression, though, and good relationships have a big element of luck. Still, I think shipping Kaladin with friendship would do him a lot of good. Not that a relationship couldn't also, of course. But man, failed relationships really, really made my depression significantly worse. Maybe Kaladin would do better than me; the things that make him go real dark are definitely different from mine. Relationship stress has always affected my depression hugely. Again, others' experience will differ. Anyway, I hope that context helps!

Last month, we adjusted spoiler periods for things in our Forum and Discord policies page. The new spoiler periods: Cosmere novels - six months Cosmere everything else - three months Non-cosmere novels - three months Non-cosmere everything else - one month As such, what we will do for Sunreach (which comes out tomorrow, September 28), and ReDawn (October 26) is that they will have their spoiler period last a month each. That will work well up to the Cytonic release. Currently we still plan to have the third novella, Evershore, to have a spoiler period of a month, but we may need to see how the overlap between Evershore and Cytonics works and re-evaluate that call there.

Hi friends, Sunreach comes on September 28th, on ebook and audio. Report any typos in Sunreach in this thread!

Hi friends, I've made a Sunreach spoiler board and moved this topic there.

Not retiring, but I might suggest to HEAD ADMIN that this is probably not the best idea for a username

Can you believe that we've never done an actual episode on Kaladin? He's kind of a big deal, and he did a lot in Rhythm of War, so let's get into it. We also, of course, talk about depression and mental illness as well. This episode we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), David (Windrunner), Ben (Overlord Jebus), and Jessie (Lady Lameness)! Having trouble changing my profile picture
Chaos replied to Someone_or_other's topic in Tech Support
Aha, I think the problem of the raw image ( https://cdn141.picsart.com/369965036038201.jpg ) has really huge dimensions (nearly 3000 pixels by 3000 pixels). Here is a smaller size, try that: This is a dumb issue with the thumbnail generator, I believe, which I hope will be resolved in a future software update. Sometimes when vector art is created, it is rendered at an unnecessarily high resolution like this, even if it's a fairly simple piece like this. Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience! Let me know if that smaller file doesn't work. -

On this stream, we will be answering questions from our patrons over on Patreon! We probably won't be able to answer many questions in chat, but hopefully you find this Q&A stream fun! Our patrons have sent in some pretty good questions so far. But everyone can watch this, and it'll start Sunday September 19th at 10am Pacific. Patrons in our $5 and $10 tiers can submit questions, and we'll be doing these roughly every three months. You can submit questions here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/56210850 We also will be livestreaming a Shardcast recording on Saturday to our patrons, which will come out in October!

Hopefully this page helps: https://www.17thshard.com/about.php Short version, Brandon told us this name a bit prior to Way of Kings, which is where the name "Seventeenth Shard" first canonically appeared.

That's the plan eventually! But no ETA on this. Tags are managed by Arcanum staff, and so decisions like that will be done there (specifically @WeiryWriter, as the head Arcanum decision maker). Many different users may disagree on individual tagging decisions. Please note tag names and such can have an affect on search rankings, which could be a factor. I definitely agree things should be made consistent, and I appreciate you listing these problems out (though Thaidakar could be argued about, in my opinion). The lack of documentation is certainly an issue in the tag creep. I would generally recommend transcribers to not terribly worry about tagging and leave that to staff in the process of finalizing those.

Yes, but isn't that the difference between capitalized God and lowercase g gods? OP simply is using title case and did not use capital-G God. It is extremely common parlance to still call Greek (or Norse, Egyptian, etc.) gods as... gods. That's fine if you don't want to, but it is extremely common in a huge variety of settings, including academic ones. Regardless, as I have said, this is totally off-topic and not relevant. It's perfectly fine for you to not engage with the premise of the question, but is probably most respectful that if you have nothing relevant to say about the premise of the question, then maybe don't say it and discuss the divinity of Shards in a different thread, if that's what you'd like to discuss. This is like someone asking "What is the best video game of the last decade" and responding with "I don't like video games." That's fine, totally fair, but also totally irrelevant and doesn't answer the question posed in the thread at all, and is more appropriate about a thread on, say, the merits of video games. Does that make sense? I understand that is very much not a religious example, but I do think it adequately explains why I feel this entire tangent is totally irrelevant. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss this, but we are getting this topic back on track, please.
