It has just been announced today by Tor that Words of Radiance, which had been tentatively scheduled for release in January, will be delayed to March 4th, 2014. Brandon is obviously working very hard at the anticipated sequel to The Way of Kings, and has finished the first draft. A lot is done, but revision is really tough, especially when you consider that Words of Radiance is about the length of A Memory of Light. It isn't exactly trivial to make such huge epics awesome. So yes, obviously we are all disappointed that it is delayed, but we also want the book to be as amazing as all the anticipation should suggest. I know that giving Brandon enough time will make the book succeed far beyond our expectations, and it'll be even more awesome than we hope. (And plus, you know, we're still getting a sequel sooner than, say, some other fantasy series that shall remain nameless) In other news, Brandon posted an extensive blog about the State of Sanderson and all the things coming out in the near future, the foreseeable future, and the far future. There's a lot more that you may not have expected given Brandon's work on Words of Radiance, but the way he stays prolific is by doing other projects too. The Rithmatist sequel is coming, Shadows of Self--the sequel to Alloy--is going to be written early next year, and we'll also get Firefight, the sequel to Steelheart. So 2014 is going to be a really great year for Brandon fans. For hardcore Sharders, we also learn of a few new cosmere books. The Sixth of Dust was brainstormed on Writing Excuses, and it will be a cosmere novella. Nice. Then there is also Skyward, which is a YA cosmere novel. We've never heard of it until now, so your guess is as good as ours, but it's great to see more cosmere. Also, did you remember that Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell, Brandon's novella coming out in George R. R. Martin's Anthology, Dangerous Women, is coming out in December? Will it be enough to tide you over till Words of Radiance? Well, probably not, but realize that Shadows for Silence is also cosmere, on a minor Shardworld. And Tor just posted a preview of it. It's just as haunting as you'd expect from a title like that. It's great. Get excited. So yes, Words of Radiance is delayed, but we still have a ton of Brandon stuff coming up. Check out Brandon's State of Sanderson post for a more extensive look at his pipeline for the next... well, long freaking time.

Okay so my reservation is set for SpoCon Need to learn magic quickly I think... I'd rather not sit out of the Magic tournament, but I haven't played it much.
-
There is also a secret level people haven't really noticed, I believe. Again, you can find the exact numerical values if you look very, very closely on many pages... But I won't want to spoil the surprise It might be right before your eyes. There is a pattern to the rep levels, but hey, blame Brandon for making sixteen so important. I think at some point we will need to increase Adonalsium's threshold, years down the line, though.
-
There's a place on the board where you can find where the numbers are for each level, at least

I'm thinking of going to SpoCon, but it would really be much more affordable to share a room. Anyone up for it? Windy, still up for that? $113 a night for two queen beds in the hotel the convention is at, so a bit pricey, but definitely a good idea to be in the hotel the convention is at
-
I'm also thinking of attending

Really? Huh, I had forgotten that somehow, I guess.

Good point about Mythwalker, there should be a forum for that. My bad. Aether is indeed cosmere.

It's been brought up that we could, theoretically, have a locked board where only people who have read the book can access it. There are some issues with that, though. Firstly, we would need some way to verify people have actually read the book. There would be quite a few people on the boards who would like to read the spoilery, theoretical discussion just to know more, you know? And verifying could be a little tedious and take up a lot of our time... I think that may be the only way an unpublished works board would go, but then obviously we would need to open boards for Dragonsteel and many others as well. I'm just worried people will sneak their way in, so there would need to be some verification process. It's a bit tricky. Have any ideas how we could implement it better? In the meantime, I don't want to have Cosmere Theories home to discussion on unpublished works. Does that make sense?

No, I've read the emails notifying me of new PMs. I've just been ludicrously busy with working full time as well as also teaching an accelerated summer course.

I've done some research, and I believe it is because Twitter is retiring its v1 API, and so the older widgets don't work. I will have to embed the new one, which will require a bit more finagling to fit with our layout. Stay tuned.

The ebooks are mostly useful to me for finding quotes for theories and the Coppermind. It's a lot easier to just use Find and have the computer get every instance of a topic rather than paging through it by hand.

He does not send out Dragonsteel; it can only be accessed through the BYU library. Senor, you can discuss whether it is Hoid's master or not. I feel that's okay because those Liar of Partinel sample chapters are publicly available (you can find them here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/691-verified-locations-for-unreleased-bookschapters-and-sample-chapters-of-published-books/). Dragonsteel isn't, and I know a lot of people would like to read it. We don't think it's fair to discuss spoiler related stuff to unpublished works when only a small subsection of the population on the boards even have the possibility of accessing them. So if you have read Dragonsteel proper... smile and don't comment But the Liar sample chapters are fair game, since everyone can read those. White Sand, Dragonsteel, and Aether, though, are off limits (though Brandon does send out those books, so more people may have read them). This policy may change eventually, but that's what we've stuck with.
-
Unfortunately, I really need to shut this topic down. We just have a policy of no spoilers from unpublished works. I would not want to spoil anyone reading the book. However, he did confirm a while ago that the Letter's recipient was on Yolen, so I'd say this isn't new knowledge Thanks for the information at the signing though! Feel free, if there was more info from the signing, to make a topic in Signings about it. I just really don't want anyone talking about unpublished stuff. Sorry guys for closing it...

I just got back from the midnight release. I loved it. Anyone else see it yet?
-
I am not in the Afterword. Though I read it, I never critiqued the original version, for the same reason as Wilson didn't.

That sounds like one of those "rules" that grade school teachers say that aren't actual things (for example, that starting sentences with conjunctions is bad is one of those things. Stylistic choice, not a rule). I read the sentence and didn't have a problem with it. That said, this is a good place to let Peter know about typos.
-
As far as I can tell, they are identical. If anything just typos were fixed. Gee, I wonder where you got that? So, I think I'll just admit that I had read Rithmatist a while ago. You've probably already figured this out, considering how effusive I've been on the News section about Rithmatist. But I had read it back when it was called Scribbler, so my perspective is a bit different. Long story short: I've really really loved this book for a while. I'm with you, WeiryWriter. The world is simply fantastic. You can tell Brandon had a ton of fun doing the worldbuilding in this. It's just so compelling. The chalk, the wild chalkings, and the mysterious connection with the steampunk aspects? Holy crap I'm in love. It had been so long since I had read Scribbler that I totally forgot like three things about the ending. I knew Nalizar was bad, but man, that ending is twisty and awesome. The ending didn't bother me with its sequel bait as much as Alloy bothered me. It could be that I've known this would be another series of Brandon's for a long time, so when I read the final product, I had the right expectations (Alloy, on the other hand, annoyed me so much more, because I had been sold that this was a standalone, not a series. That ending still bums me out in some respects). But, on another token, the worldbuilding is so excellent that I simply must get a sequel. That's probably why I'm okay with this ending. Rithmatist ends resolving the mystery of the Scribbler and the killings, and the end with the Melee was so excellent. I had totally forgotten the last battle with Joel and Melody, so that ending was supremely satisfying for me. I think of it like, this book solved the problems it promised in the beginning, both plot and character wise, and the setup of Nalizar is the setup for the rest of the trilogy (I am pretty sure it is a trilogy, but I don't know if that's set in stone). (Also, I personally think The Rithmatist is a weaker title than Scribbler, which is what this book's plot centers on) Though I'm not worried Brandon getting burned out on series. This novel is one of his books he'd write in between big epics anyway. We are really, really lucky this year that with A Memory of Light, we still get such books. I'm sure he can crank this stuff out in like a month The Rithmatist is a fun vacation for him

There is no restriction on new content on the wiki; you simply need to add a Spoiler tag. Though honestly, if you are going to the wiki for Rithmatist stuff, you probably should expect that the stuff you are finding would have some spoilers I typically feel the spoiler warning is more useful for cosmere stuff, because one click can lead you to spoilers in new content. But for a new series like this, I'm less concerned. After all, Windy has already written an excellent article on the Tai-na, which takes information from the Rysn interlude in Words of Radiance. Long story short, if the content is publicly available, it is fair game to be on the wiki. What is not fair game would be say, things like White Sand, if someone has been lucky enough to read that. Anyway, back to Rithmatist. I've compiled some Rithmatist topics that should get articles: http://coppermind.net/wiki/Coppermind:Articles_to_be_written#The_Rithmatist I probably missed minor characters and a few names of the United Isles. I last read it for pleasure, instead of taking careful notes I personally think we don't need articles for each Isle, so we should list any information on particular islands on the United Isles of America page. But countries, like JoSeun, should get their own articles. There is a lot of terminology with Rithmatics, so I'm not sure how you all want to do things. But I kind of feel that for now, let's put magic information in the Rithmatics article, rather than making individual articles on, say, Lines of Vigor. I'd rather have one really, really awesome article on Rithmatics, instead of distributing the information. However, in later Rithmatist books this could change. What do you think? (Also, you could make an argument that "Inception" could be in the Rithmatics article, but I think discussing the inception ceremony is culturally significant and as a cultural element can be a separate article from Rithmatics, which would focus more on the mechanics of it all.) I'll try to construct a Rithmatist series navbox tomorrow or the next day, I think. Did I miss any topics that I should add to the Articles to be written thing? It's a protected page, so only staff can edit it, but just let me know and I'll add stuff I need to read the book again...

I would like to announce that if you look closely in Brandon's blog post on the Rithmatist and its release, he totally linked to the Hoid article on the Coppermind 0_0

It's May 14th (very early in the morning, but still), and you know what that means: it's Rithmatist day. But Eric, that isn't a cosmere book, so I'm totally not interested in it. Thank you, random viewer! Indeed, The Rithmatist is not a cosmere novel. If you're ever confused which books are cosmere and which aren't, just look if it contains Earth in it (for example, Alcatraz is not in the cosmere). The Rithmatist is set on Earth, but as you might expect, it's a little... different. And it's awesome. It isn't the United States, but the United Isles. It's steampunk. It has chalk monsters. It's fascinating alternate history. What do these seemingly unrelated things have in common? That they are expertly weaved together in this book. I won't spoil anything, but it's all the wondrous worldbuilding you expect from Brandon, with a phenomenal ending like you'd expect. Every Sharder should read this book, no question. You can read in this interview with The Book Smugglers some interesting historical elements, and why Brandon chose to write this book). Tor has a great article on Rithmatics here, comparing it to StarCraft. Yes, the magic is actually that cool. Not sold yet? You can read from the prologue to chapter 5 of the book on Tor.com. Okay okay I'll buy the freaking book already, you don't need to be a shill. Hey, it's okay being a shill if we're being a shill for someone else. Namely, Brandon. (But also, we just really, really like this book and don't want you to forget about it) As far as I can tell, you can buy the ebooks right now, at this very second. Here are a bunch of places where you can get the physical book and the ebook, for whatever platform you happen to choose: Amazon (and Kindle) Barnes and Noble (and Nook) iBooks Google Play Read the book already? Discuss it at our Rithmatist forum, and our spoilery thread of impressions. Additionally, you can use our handy Community Calendar to see when and where the events in The Rithmatist tour is. The events will appear in the sidebar on the forum's index page, too! And if you're going to a signing, why not post in the "Which signing will you be at" thread and meet up with some other awesome Sharders?

So it's May 14th, which means you can now get the Rithmatist! Go do that now. I'll wait. When you finish, come back here. Let's hear what you think of the book. I'll keep this really spare and spoiler-free for now, but I just wanted to say that I love this book. I'm worried people who just focus on the cosmere will miss out on its awesomeness. I'm in love with the setting, and the ending. Man. So I'm serious: go get it and read it right now. It is everything you'd want in a Brandon book.

Yeah, I think if you dislike Vivenna, Warbreaker is a really, really hard book to get through. I love Warbreaker, but Vivenna is definitely unlikable for much of the book. But just you wait. She won me over eventually. I hope you like the ending I usually recommend Warbreaker to introduce people to Brandon's works. Why? Well, I feel that Way of Kings can be seriously intimidating to some people who don't read fantasy as often, so I tend to not recommend that one unless they are serious fantasy buffs. Mistborn can be really dark and violent. Elantris I love to death, but it's definitely rougher than Brandon's later works. I feel that Warbreaker, with its lighter feel and its comedy, is a great introduction. It's the book I recommended to my mom to get her into Brandon first, and it was very effective in that respect. Way of Kings is better written, but Warbreaker's prose is just better than Elantris and Mistborn's, I feel, so it's a good intro. (Though honestly, nowadays, I may as just well recommend The Emperor's Soul, because that book is pretty much perfect) I'm not going to argue with you about Vivenna, though. She is pretty annoying. But her character arc will make it all worthwhile. For me, Siri and Lightsong--as well as the mystery of Vasher--was more than enough to pull me through the book until I liked Vivenna.
