The idea I had was that it's unadvisable to ask about one's favorite books because they're going to ramble on and on about it. Which is probably fine if you're a fellow nerd, but... it can get unpleasant.

(not to mention us constantly stopping mid-sentence and being like: "Argh! Spoilers!" if you're reading Cosmere :P)

It's not saying not to ask what our favorite book is (though that can be dangerous), just don't ask us to summarize, describe, or otherwise try to learn the contents of our favorite book without reading it. We can't answer you.

I'm familiar with the concept (which is why I made the joke). I'm the person at work that people come to ask about books. I keep multiple documents ready-to-print as references* and when they are reading a book or series I recommended, they inevitably come to me to ask questions/vent/speculate/etc.

  • Spoiler

    Such as:

    • Reading order references for multiple series/continuities like Cosmere, Dresden Files, Enderverse, Iron Druid, etc.
    • Recommended book lists (with synopses to help them make informed decisions on their next read)
      • Recommended book series (ongoing and complete)
      • Rec. "Stand alone"
      • Rec. Speculative Fiction
      • Rec. Slipstream ("borderline" SF published as mainstream when the story has a more general appeal - e.g. Crichton's Prey and Weir's Martian)
      • Rec. Youth, MG, and YA of the above
    • Example:
    Quote

      - Codex Alera (6 Books - Complete)
        - Author: Jim Butcher
        - Book one: Furies of Calderon
        - Lost Roman Legion didn't disappear on Earth, they were somehow transported to the world of Carna where all "lost travelers of the universe" end up. Beset by enemies on all sides, they eventually developed the capacity for a symbiotic bond with the local "furies" (elementals - Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Metal, Wood) which gives them access to "Furycrafting" (possibly the best expression of elemental magic in SF - IMO). After over 1000 yrs of development, the former Romans have created the Aleran Kingdom spanning nearly the entire continent.

As of book one, the heir is dead and Alera begins it's steady march toward civil war as the High Lords begin to vie for power once the aging First Lord should retire or die (or be killed). Into this is born Tavi, a shepherd's apprentice who is the first known Aleran to possess no furycraft in centuries. (Note: Book titles are spoilers so beware of checking them out early)

I even made an epub of my Cosmere summary/reading list.

Nice! Those are good. Spoiler alert: I totally read all the Cosmere books.

For future reference, memes about the Cosmere would usually go here. This forum is for memes about the users of the shard. There’s also a “Memes of any kind” forum, I believe it’s on the FGaRS.

That would be impressive if you weren't a witch.
