"So... who are you anyways? How did everyone find you?" Janice kept hugging her.

Oh yeah. She wouldn't know. "I'm in the army, from one of the other islands. My immediate commander was sent to apprehend y-Trace, and I was selected to accompany the mission. I'm glad I did; I made some new friends."

"Yeah." Maddy said. "I didn't know what I was facing." She smiled. "I got beat up, but I'm fine now. The mission was successful, and they have you back!"

"The mission wasn't successful. You guys never got Trace."

A chill ran through Maddy's spine. What?

"It was successful in that you're safe, which I think was really Cadenza and Aryanna's goal. I'm happy to defer to that being mine as well. C'mon, let's go show that sweater to the others." She put a hand on Janice's back, steering her towards friends and away from that conversation. She would need to talk with Aryanna about this, maybe Cadenza. And probably Colonel.

Janice tried to respond, but couldn't think of anything to say. She followed Maddy wordlessly, head hung slightly.

"Do you think I lack knowledge of what it is like to be an instrument of carnage? So many cut down because they refused to turn aside... and because I made the choice to cut them down. Dismiss my vision of morality as absurd, if you will, but remember this: Violence is always a choice. To deny that you have made that choice, or to project it onto others, is nothing more than self-deception and cowardice. If you can say that you chose to kill, and that you feel nothing for the deaths, then I will accept that, but I do not believe that it is so."

The creature stood still, staring into the sky blindly.  "There was little choice about any of the killings... but I doubt you are one who would accept an explanation such as that.  Yes.  I chose to kill.  I have killed more people than I can remember.  I have always felt nothing.  I was a tool, not a voice.  But... I have begun to feel again.  I feel wrong.  I feel as if someone had rammed a knife into my chest and slashed it in curls around my organs.  I feel sick, as though I am falling and the wind is not there.  I feel... helpless."

Shade sighed. She was sitting down, taking a break. How hard was it going to be to find this kid? This is going to take forever. I think I'll go get myself some ice cream. She grinned. Often, she didn't even have to pay for such things. The owners of the stores were too scared that she'd kill them. Not that she would, of course. She never had before. Rumors had spread, which she was fine with, that she had killed a shop owner who tried to cheat her out of her money. That wasn't true. However, she had punched him in the face. Hard. I'm thinking chocolate ice cream this time... She went to find a place that sold good chocolate ice cream.

"Duly noted. The prosecution will have to present evidence to argue that the defendant's treatment was somehow not unfounded. While I doubt this will acquit your client completely, Ms Delacroix, it will likely result in a much lighter sentence if you are successful. The prosecution may continue to argue for the defendant's guilt as well, but the focus of this trial has moved to his legal rights after arrest."

@The Ward's Guard (Also at me, but I'm really interested in Edgeworth's response.)

((Let me find that!  I thought I'd responded, Fallapede.))

"What'd you get, Jay?" Janice asked, pulling on his sleeve.

Oh yes, Null

Jay's been here the ENTIRE TIME

Have you ever gone shopping with a gaggle of girls, man? Has Jay? Can any man know the true horrors of trying to shop with a group of females? NO THEY CANNOT. THERE IS NO ESCAPE, NULL; THERE IS NO ESCAPE, JAY. YOU HAVE BEEN CONFINED TO SUFFER IN THEIR GRASP FOREVERMORE.

"I regret that I can do little to help how you feel, but I find that being active helps to keep my mind from wandering, at least in the moment. You should not strain yourself yet, given that you are still in recovery, but would you mind helping me tend to the garden?"
