Ok so question about missions.

I don't want to serve a mission.

But it seems that the way everyone talks about them you have to. I know they say it's a choice but people tend to speak like you'd be a disappointment if you dont. And whenever i even hint at not wanting to serve one people give me judging looks and start being like. Ohh but your serving god and it's the best thing ever. It feels like their trying to say im making a mistake by not wanting to serve a mission.

So... what's your opinions on this

I think . . . ultimately that it's between you and God, not you and your peers/family. There are other ways to serve God without going on a mission, and it's not right for everyone. There's a brother in my ward who never went on a mission (he's in his fifties now) and he says that he knows that's not what God intended for him.

So I would just pray about it, read some GC talks on it, study specific scriptures verses, etc . . .

No matter what everyone else says, though, it's not up to them. It's up to you and God.

yeah i agree with this

God knows what's best for you

president oaks didn't serve a mission and that never diminished his faith

pray about it, but if you really feel like a mission isn't what you're supposed to do, then don't do it

don't try to live someone else's life, your path is your own

Hm.

Ill try to find a gc talk but whenever I try to find one about NOT serving all i see is about why it's expected to serve.

Alot of people say that. It's between you and God. But I do that. I find what's good for me and god to be on good terms. And then people look at me and say "your not being a good member" or they will say "you can't do/say that if you wanna be a good Christian." And everyone in my ward will say how you NEED to do this or HAVE to do that while also saying it's between you and god. So, if it's between me and god but what's between me and god is different then what the apostles and prophet say. Then what's true?

If me and god say this buy the prophet who speaks for god says that. Which one is the one I should follow?

I think I got a bit off topic from the mission confusion.

Its a bit comforting to know that president oaks didn't serve one.

So.... what is true?

What the prophet says or what I made an agreement with God...

Cause I go through and look on gospel library and read through the specific sections and it says the opposite of what i had agreed with God.

So.... if what the apostles or what I agreed on true?

And i know thats a peculiar topic for the church.

They don't have anything for gender apathetic but it's close enough to trans and I've looked at the trans and the gay one and it seems.... like I've broken the rules they said already.

I think the best way to put this into prospective is to remember that you aren't being punished for breaking any rules, because it's not a rule to be broken, it is a guideline to align your own goals to become closer to God. I know a ton of people that are supposedly terrible people, in the eyes of what I would call LDS extremists, and those supposedly "terrible" people are the kindest and most honorable people I know. It's good to remember that nobody should be judging you for how you live your life. You my good fellow are an amazing person.

It's definitely a delicate topic in the church right now 😬

Actually, can I PM you?

Thanks. I geuss that the people who take religion way to serious do tend to be the ones who say that to me.

that's very well-said

it's not about following x rule or y rule but more about becoming closer to God

i can't remember which apostle said this but there are two great commandments in the church (love God and love others)

at the end of the day, that's what really matters

it's about growing to become all that God knows you can be

A mission is considered a priesthood duty, but it's not a saving ordinance.

Sure, it's the standard to strive for, but as has been said: everyone's path is different, anyone's judgement is their issue, not yours. (We see the same thing with people judging those who return home early, or serve a shorter mission type. They are unequivocally in the wrong, taking that standard and turning it into a law.)

I haven't served yet. I'm 26. My patriarchal blessing says I will. What to make of that? God only knows--literally. I trust in Him, not the arm of flesh.

No prob. I always feel like I'm bumbling every time I try to offer my thoughts in this thread, so I'm glad I was able to be of some service.

Not everyone's personal circumstances allow them to do everything in the Church, but everyone's personal circumstances allow them to have a relationship with Christ and to gain exaltation.

I can't guarantee what other people will or won't say about it, but I know plenty of people who didn't serve missions - some of whom could have, and some of whom are close friends - and I don't usually see people judge them.

We had ward conference recently, and our stake presidency was in attendance. Our stake president is Polynesian, and opened his talk with "Aloha!" Of course, we all said it back.

Then he said "Let's try that again. He is risen!" and again, we said it back.

I just thought that was really nice.

Fun fact: the Conference Center has a ton of backend infrastructure, including multiple floors of office space and a large number of apartments.  The apartments are for non-local General Authorities visiting for General Conference to stay in, so that they don't have to find some place to stay for the weekend.
