Not a progress bar enhancement per se, but there's apparently some big news about Brandon's future plans coming tomorrow on his YouTube channel

Don't worry dude, me too. There's a twitter account that posts about them the moment they happen, and it's the sole twitter I have notifications on for every single post about.

OMG I never even thought I’d that.

I’m more the obsessively refresh the Sanderson website until the % goes up

Or do what I do, and follow this thread, and in my following preferences, just get an email every time someone posts. Sometimes the email are stuff like this, where people are just talking, but most of the time it's an update.

Meanwhile I watch the 17S Discord automatic feed XD love how we all have different ways.

Hi,

Sorry if this sounds a bit testy but I think what I will say is fair.

Not updating the main Brandon page is getting a bit out of hand now. We are _your fiction_ fans Brandon, we are not Elder Ring fans, or Youtube fans, or Facebook fans, or random questions fans. You also have considerable staff, and surely, updating the main page in some reasonable way could be of higher importance than any of the above?

Thanks!

Brandon is never on here, he won't see this.

Three main things here:

First, Brandon doesn't use the 17th Shard anymore, and he hasn't in sometime.

Second, Brandon provides mostly-regular weekly updates via his YouTube page. Those will give you the latest updates and information on everything going on. (For example, SP 2's final draft is in, Brandon's draft of Dark One is finished, and he's going to go back to work on Stormlight for a couple of months before revising Defiant and SP 3.) You don't have to be a YouTube fan to go to the site and check out a 3 minute video that provides everything you're asking about.

Third, fans have been asking about him uploading some Elden Ring gameplay, maybe just not where you've seen it. People like it because it's showing that a person they like has similar interests, so it's fun to see him play. (I personally don't like Soulsborne games, but I do like seeing him play and his comments on it.) And this is clearly something Brandon is doing in his free time and out of the goodness of his heart. He doesn't need to do this, and he makes sure his books are his professional priority.

TL;DR - if you want updates, go to his YouTube page.

Speak for yourself my friend, I really enjoy watching him play Elden Ring and answer random questions. Also, he's already one of the most transparent authors (at least that I've ever seen), so there's no real negative impact to letting the website lapse slightly while he's sending out updates multiple other times over.
I'm going to refrain from restating the thing that the other two have already said about Brandon's usage of this forum, but the man and his team are extremely busy, in case you managed to miss that November this year is a major release date and that there are a whole jumble of books that all have to go through the process to be ready and able to release next year. Extending a little bit of leeway while they take care of the necessary bits is a small price to pay for keeping their attention where it matters most.

OK, sure, but what about more low-tech people, who maybe access the site on mobile, maybe in a sick bed and want to see how are the next books going in a very clear way: book-percentage and that's it? Is it really that hard to update by a busy team?

Follow this thread, so you get an email every time someone posts. People are really good about posting here whenever his website or youtube updates.

  • The dawnshard audiobook is available for preorder
  • Secret project 1 is turned in to the printers
  • Secret project 2 has been turned over to brandon's team, and will be turned in to the printers as soon as the copyedit is done
  • Tickets for The Lost Metal book release party are available monday the 11th
  • Mistborn: Secret History is getting a new cover with its rerelease
  • Brandon is answering questions on a livestream tonight, and taking those questions from an ama on r/books

As long as (a) the percentage updates one way or another are on Youtube _and_ (b) are copied here by some kind soul, _I am_ happy--however, there may be other readers who may not be aware of this arrangement and have nothing but the website to track.

At this point, YouTube is low-tech. It's not that hard to access the site, turn on subtitles if need be, and watch a three minute video. The 17th Shard also does update posts for the Weekly Updates, particularly the big ones.

And no, it's not necessarily hard to update, but I think you're underestimating how busy the team is and where their resources are located. Brandon has 4-5 known books that he's revising and that his team is prepping for, alongside the rest of the Kickstarter stuff, alongside their fair share of standard weekly meetings alongside TV and movie meetings now.

And Brandon really only has one person that does the YouTube side of things - Adam, who is also Brandon's assistant, chauffer, and all-around handy-man for several other things. There's so much in Adam's job that they're now hiring a separate Social Media Specialist. And even these short videos take time: You need to make sure the lighting's right, the camera's ready, Brandon has all of the info he needs to state for the week, and says so well. And then you get into Editing - which fortunately isn't too terrible for 3-4 minute videos, but it's still a lot for the uninitiated - and after that uploading, which doesn't always go as planned. And since Brandon does want the videos to be transcribed, you need to find time to do that as well. It's a LOT, particularly when considering everything else done.

The site? Absolutely. This thread? Ehh... I got scolded last time I used the YouTube Weekly Updates for an update rather than the Progress Bar, because that's technically what this thread is about. It was pedantic, but it happened.

OK, consider the following obvious scenario: type "Brandon Sanderson" into DuckDuckGo (which I use) or Google search--also checked just now. On DuckDuckGo, the only meaningful link apart from Wikipedia is the Home page. This forum is not linked anywhere at all on either DuckDuckGo or Google search (so only hard core fans know about it). The Youtube channel is _not linked_ from the DuckDuckGo search--only from the ads-driven Google search. So where exactly would potentially a million or more readers be able to "ask about the updates, and the answers will be given"?

You are really overestimating the whole social malarkey--a lot of people never use it and, as I said above, there are no links and even if there are, the very first link on Google search is still the Web page--being the main source of reliable information about the author.

EDIT: Plus, Youtube is _not linked_ from Sanderson's web page either and there is no mention of "go there and get the updates"!

Only hardcore fans care enough to check regularly.

And the ones that don't will be glad that they have progress bars at all becuase Brandon is one of the only authors to have them.
