  1. I don't know how to pass along this message, but I agree with the comment Brandon himself made about Elantris and Warbreaker: great depiction of characters is what differentiates great writers from good--loose wording, same meaning. Brandon: please stop focusing on 127 different magic systems and pay your full attention to your characters, their motivations, consistency of their intent (yes, that's the word you often use), and their believable evolution. This part really needs work. I know Brandon _can_ do it if he gets his priorities right. Can the beta readers help? It really is very important not to be taking the wrong direction at this time.
  2. Yeah, something along these lines, but definitely a point that I had not appreciated in the past two-three Mistborn re-reads. Vessels going mad like Fused or, dare I say it, Kelsier. Something to think about.
  3. Having read Mistborn a long time ago, now that you mention it, I have a question: why did Ruin want to destroy the world that he could rule, what would have happened to the Shard+Vessel if the planet they resided on was destroyed? What would they gain by this, what is the plan beyond just destroying? Many similar questions follow: when the Shard was taken, why did he not destroy something already, what was even the point of settling on a planet with Preservation and creating humans? It all seems very convoluted and pointless.
  4. This whole political landscape and options explored here are absolutely fascinating. I am interested in how pretty deep and revealing Realmatic revelations in recent books will play out against the backdrop of all those political machinations. I am confident that Brandon will be able to pull it off, however, I would also set the level of difficulty here at 9-10 out of 10 to be able to weave it all together harmoniously--pun intended.
  5. DELETED as not contributing constructively
  6. Could Sja-anat be an avatar then?
  7. I still go back to that sphere-lit dinner on the Shattered plains. From memory, one of the first things he says is "Adonalsium" as a one-word sentence. I think it is at least likely that his focus is on the big union of some kind and I think he is in it for the result, considering it as good for the Cosmere, not necessarily like: "I want to become one".
  8. Yes, agreed, Dalinar is likely going beyond what used to be possible, encroaching into what would be the Honor level abilities, or even beyond.
  9. Interesting answers, thanks. I am fascinated by that power Dalinar is using. Why would Stormfather say that was "not right"?
  10. Had SA1 re-read over a dozen times but only re-reading SA3 for the first time and stumbling on stuff I did not notice before. Dalinar is escaping from visiting Jah Keved, specifically from the Thrill almost attacking him there. Q1. If the Thrill is so strong in that city, why is no one else affected: armed soldiers, Taravangian, Navani and so on? Is the Thrill selective? Why were the armies fighting before with strong Thrill influence but now everyone is perfectly quiet? Q2. It felt like the Thrill followed Dalinar through the gateway, did it? If yes, how? Q3. Dalinar pulls a shardblade from somewhere to operate the gateway? The Stormfather was unhappy, but was it really Stormfather manifested as the blade? What was that blade if not?
  11. OK, consider the following obvious scenario: type "Brandon Sanderson" into DuckDuckGo (which I use) or Google search--also checked just now. On DuckDuckGo, the only meaningful link apart from Wikipedia is the Home page. This forum is not linked anywhere at all on either DuckDuckGo or Google search (so only hard core fans know about it). The Youtube channel is _not linked_ from the DuckDuckGo search--only from the ads-driven Google search. So where exactly would potentially a million or more readers be able to "ask about the updates, and the answers will be given"? You are really overestimating the whole social malarkey--a lot of people never use it and, as I said above, there are no links and even if there are, the very first link on Google search is still the Web page--being the main source of reliable information about the author. EDIT: Plus, Youtube is _not linked_ from Sanderson's web page either and there is no mention of "go there and get the updates"!
  12. As long as (a) the percentage updates one way or another are on Youtube _and_ (b) are copied here by some kind soul, _I am_ happy--however, there may be other readers who may not be aware of this arrangement and have nothing but the website to track.
  13. OK, sure, but what about more low-tech people, who maybe access the site on mobile, maybe in a sick bed and want to see how are the next books going in a very clear way: book-percentage and that's it? Is it really that hard to update by a busy team?
  14. Hi, Sorry if this sounds a bit testy but I think what I will say is fair. Not updating the main Brandon page is getting a bit out of hand now. We are _your fiction_ fans Brandon, we are not Elder Ring fans, or Youtube fans, or Facebook fans, or random questions fans. You also have considerable staff, and surely, updating the main page in some reasonable way could be of higher importance than any of the above? Thanks!
  15. I think the Dawnsgard(s) have a big role on Roshar. It is worth exploring this if someone has any further ideas.
  16. Posted earlier about the way Gavilar was portrayed in the WoK vs RoW. Consider this: "Dalinar felt as if he could almost see it. The secret. The thing that had made Gavilar so excited in the months before his death. If Dalinar could just stretch a little farther, he'd make it out. See the pattern in the lives of men. And finally know." Is this misleading, is it a change of plans from Book 1 to 4, is it obfuscation of the first kind? I do not know but the above sounds extremely positive so you cannot help but feel that Gavilar is some kind of absolute hero, not a douche as he ends up later, the contrast is too big to be accidental, plus this promises some grand reveal later on. And what is this amazing secret?
  17. Re-reading WoK now and was trying to stay attentive to the portrayal of Gavilar. It could be, of course, Brandon's intent to keep the 'secrets' hidden but reading through that (still best) book reminded me of many manifestly positive quotes and observations regarding the Codes and other seemingly positive changes observed closer to his death. The contrast with the picture we gradually started to see in RoW or even before is remarkably large. I'm not defending Gavilar in the slightest but I want to understand what is going on here, why were we (the reader) mislead so badly in the first book? And more specifically, if Gavilar was after some ultra-informed Cosmere 'game', why was he reading the WoK book, talked about following the Codes, what did it have to do with his plans or even his attitude. I am sensing a clash here, a contradiction, can anyone explain or offer any ideas? Not to mention the most important words a man can say part (do we truly understand that one?). I will even make this into a stronger point. The first Chapter starts with the Gavilar scene. To me this is still potentially the most enigmatic part of the story where we are only guessing at what his intents were, the pre-history, the motivation, the information he had, in cahoots with Heralds, it is astonishing. There have to be big reveals later on for sure.
  18. Is it like officially confirmed? I'm noticing one thing that the Eiree were kind of following the same pattern of taking investiture elsewhere to give themselves a leg up in the fight for shards.
  19. I see, I get your point too, very good! Peace!
  20. But Mardy, what you loved and what is haunting you and you remember from the book vivdly is the picture of a semi-immortal mum with her disabled daughter, and of a middle-aged woman doing 'science' under tremendous pressure. You are not actually haunted by the details of that mentioned 'science' itself, you're not likely going to be saying to your friend about this amazing book you'd read and when they ask you about the book you tell them about drums were beaten in order for the lights to be mixed etc etc You referred to that whole lot in your post above by one single word 'science'. You did not recall in two-three paragraphs above the very details of that science because the haunting and inventive picture and mood and setting that Brandon depicted, deposited a more powerful lasting picture in your heart and mind than all those scientific 'details'. That is what I am saying: Brandon's strengths as a writer lie with that inventive insight into human (and non-human :-)) psyche and wise gentle touch but when Brandon goes into those intricate details of magic, science whetever it may be be called, it's kind of slipping, and ends up not being that memorable. So how about reducing it by 80% and if needed adding more logic to basic questions like asking the immortal mum what actually happened 3000 years ago, which would have been a much better filler for a meaningful conversation, instead of the fabrial or shard science.
  21. Writing here because I care about the direction Brandon is taking. I think he has a "weak point"/penchant for the magic systems that are starting to get really out of control. As a former researcher who worked in quantum physics and gravitation and still very much in tech, I really would say that you cannot begin to compare quantum mechanics with--let's face it--pseudo-science--that this book is full of. Surely, we want to read a book on characters, the world, the mood, the beauty, the majesty, the heroism, the overcoming the hardship themes, which will resonate with many people right now as we speak. Brandon, addressing you personally, you are an 'old' and wise soul, and you surprised and touched me personally in the WoK, and we love you for it. You have a chance to affect the world around us postively by your words. Now, how does this over-elaborate pseudo-science magic play into this, I am failing to see it. OK, 1/5 of the amount of time spent on it would have been enough, but really, this is way excessive, demanding a lot of attention and energy (and motivation) to delve into, surely reading Scientific American on drug design advancement or neuroscience would be a much better use of time. Brandon, PLEASE, snap out of it, you are overloading the books with too much detail, pseudo periodic element tables, pseudo-chemistry, pseudo-quantum physics, can you please please please get back on track and write LITERATURE--as you entirely can--not pseudo-science?
  22. I do not want to get deep into metaphysical matters, but briefly, passions are a very deep and ultimately dark phenomenon that does not at all equate to intense feelings, but is about flushing out intelligence and thoughtfulness, the positive intent from one's actions. Passions in that sense are distorted and corrupted sprens, corrupted emotions. Syl is an embodiment of very strong emotions but Syl is not a passion, not a void spren. Killing with 'passion' is a distorted, corrupted form of, for example, killing in order to protect a defenceless child. On the contrary, blind frenzied killing by Moash is full of 'passion'--a drive for revenge at all cost, full of negative energy. It is all about the intent, purpose, motivation, genuine underlying truth of one's acts that is completely lacking in those strong 'passionate' actions like debauchery or maniacal killing. This whole metaphysics Brandon is alluding to is pretty deep.
  23. First time post, greetings awesome Brandonlorians. Almost reminds me of Rand being Lews Therin Telamon reborn, Nohadon even ends with -ON, so is Dalinar Nohadon reborn so to say?
