Crumpling up the water bottle, she soulcast it into air. It vanished.

Doc sat back in his chair, rubbing his forehead. New Investiture. It could be a new enemy, or a new ally. Either way, he needed to check it out. He stood up, trying to remember where he'd put the keys to his Jeep. He snapped his fingers, then ran down to the training room. The keys hung off of a sword hilt on the weapons rack. He had put them there yesterday morning after he'd gotten back from the warehouse. He grabbed them, shoved them in his pocket and looked around,

"Is Cassie here?" he asked, frowning.

Doc nodded, smiling. He checked his watch. "We should leave soon." he said briskly "If we're lucky, our mystery just landed and we'll have a good 45 minutes to get there. Meet me at the Jeep in five minutes." he turned and ran upstairs, then came back down to his workshop and trabbed the detector and a few infused gemstones. He strode out to his beat up Jeep Wrangler and jumped in. It was an open top, and Doc loved to spend long summer days speeding alongside Hood Canal, the wind in his ears.

"Fine, whatever. Do you know anything about ther kinds of Investiture."

Maybe. My former bondmate had heard rumors about strange magics.

No. Nothing. This is... odd, to say the least.

The two continued to banter as Doc replaced the gemstone on the scanner.

Ben saw Shana carefully put the flower on a table. She really seemed to like it. Was that because the flower was pretty or because he had given it to her? When Shana took the flower from his hand, her fingers touched his for a little longer than necessary. Was that a good sign? He hoped his hands weren’t sweaty again. Ben watched the petals disappear into dust, their remains floating down onto the ground and getting lost in the grass. 

“Wow!”

He was astonished at her fast progress.

“You did great!”

Shana looked nervous. Why was she nervous? Had he made her uncomfortable? He hoped not. Spending time with her was amazing, and he desperately didn’t want her to push him away like everyone else. He peered at the flower.

“That was so precise! Not a single bit of the flower other than the petals was destroyed.”

He looked at Shana again and grinned. She really was quite beautiful. But the smile slipped off his face when he saw how tired she was.

“Shana, are you ok? You look exhausted.”

He said with concern. Had he been pushing her too hard?

We ask. Shana usually does what I ask her. She even climbed a tree to fetch the eggshell for you.

Mahad replied proudly.

Look there, ducks! Let's search for some feathers.

"Doc regularly pushes me to train, but the moment it isn't about sparring my motivation usually ends up running screaming out of the room."

"But today, I, what I mean is, it's great to practice with you. And I really want to learn and spend some time with you?"

She almost whispered the last words, looked down at her feet, before forcing herself to look into his eyes again, almost afraid of his reaction, of a no, of him pushing her away.
