I would say it’s more plausible in space age Cosmere than in pre-TFE Cosmere, where Elantris takes place, but it’s still possible.

So it's approved?

Spoiler

Name: Teon Asheol (Graceful Death in Aon...)
Appearance: Dula Elantrian, Single scar, one on his hand. Has a generally reserved air.
Affiliations: None (yet...)
Personality: Like before, is generally reserved. Interacts well with people, and takes pity on those going through hardships. Has a ruthless streak, though. Brave.
Concept: Uneducated Elantrian
Motivation (Short & long term goal): Wishes to join the scholar's guild, but they won't accept him because of the fact that he isn't educated at all. Because of this he starts to seek backdoor ways to study AonDor. The reason of this is he wishes to learn aons, this is his long term goal.
Merits: MiM: 1) Teon can interact well with people, 2) is good at taking notes (uses his own system, though), 3) and is perceptive of if someone should be trusted. NM: 1) Keeps a journal. Likes to record things, and his opinion of people, whether or not to trust them, 2) Knows Aon Ene MaM: Is an Elantrian. Knows the Aon Kii, but not much more.
Flaws: Is traumatized by the fall of Duladel and battles in Arelon. Does not know many Aons, and doesn't have any real way to learn them. Is young, living in the streets, basically an urchin. (This is another reason why it is hard for him to learn Aons)
Relationships (Eg. Family and Friends): Was cut away from family when came to Alley.
Home Planet: Dula, Sel
Current Residence: Lives in the streets of the Mistwarrens, no home.
Backstory: Grew up in Duladel, until the city fell. Ran to Arelon with his family when he was 17, then was scarred in the battle in Arelon. The morning after, he became Elantrian and fell into Alley. Is now 18. Man who took pity on him gave him shelter for a while, when he was in shock. He never gave the man a name. Eventually, the man couldn't take care of him anymore, so he had to send him into the streets, which is when he got the name Teon Asheol. He saw an elantrian use Aon Kii (on one of his fellow urchins) and Ene. Spends most of the money he can scrounge up on notebooks. Gets this money by doing various (extremely low level) jobs for various gangs.
Loose ends (What is unfinished in their life?): Wants to find family (but won't), and wants to learn AonDor.

Ok. Here is my character, any critiques or suggestions?

I’m trying to wright a character who is a coin shot and has two hemalugic spikes, but I’m unsure how to fit this into the merit system. Should I put coin shot as my major merit and the spikes as normal ones? Or should I just put all 3 as major merit? Or is this just not a possible combination?

Posted

I'm not super experienced with this, but personally, I would say it depends on what the spikes do. Do you have specific abilities in mind for the spikes?

Either, like you said, it might work to have one power be the major merit, and the other two be normal merits (or even minor merits if they aren't super powerful.) It might be possible for the two spikes to count as a single merit, but I'm not certain.

@Koloss17 can probably give you better advice than I can.

I was thinking maybe steal and gold spikes.

To clarify, are you talking about Allomantic steel and gold, Feruchemical steel and gold, or Hemalurgic steel and gold? I would assume not A-steel, since they're already a Coinshot.

If you're talking about F-steel and F-gold, then I would personally put:

Major Merit: F-steel spike.

Normal Merits: Coinshot; F-gold spike.

In my opinion, F-steel is significantly more powerful than either of the other two, so I would put it as the major merit.

Hope that helps!

here is my character submission let me know what you guys think and what I should change

Spoiler

Name: Kalel dalar

Appearance: male, nearly 6’6” of northern scadrian heritage, ska, well muscled but not bulky. Shock white curly hair large blue eyes. A straight thin scar across his right forearm. slightly ragged but fairly well kept clothes. Occasionally a mist cloak.

Affiliations: was once apart of a scadrian street gang still has unfortunate ties to the gang.

Personality: very logical, but impatient and has a tendency to lash out. Also is very ADHD. Is very fun and light hearted when not stressed.

Concept: curios coin shot

Motivation (Short & long term goal): to further his power and knowledge, also to find a way to use his powers productively whether for good or bad. Join the dark allies

Merits: min1) good cook, min2) beginner swordsman min3) early into attempting to be a scholar N1) F-gold spike N2) coin shot Maj1) F-steel spike

Flaws:impatient, short attention span, trouble focusing, hyper active, had little to no moral standards, distrusts people of power, aggressive.

Relationships:  sister who is still scadrial, old members of the street gang.

Home Planet: scadrial, Luthendel

Current Residence: a Small house in the smoke stacks paid for by money taken from his teachers vault after he was killed. Nothing big enough to draw attention but with a full kitchen for cooking!

Backstory: Kalel Dalar was born in the sprawling city of Luthendel, amidst the early days of the lord rulers reign. His family had roots in the northern Scadrian heritage, where the harsh winters forged strong, resilient people. Kalel’s childhood was a mix of laughter and hardship; his mother, a cook known for her savory stews, instilled in him a love for food, while his father, a doc worker, taught him the value of hard work. However, tragedy struck when his father died in a fire, leaving Kalel and his sister to fend for themselves.

With few options, Kalel was drawn into the underbelly of Luthendel. He quickly became a member of a street gang, honing his physical abilities and survival instincts. The gang provided a semblance of family, but it also exposed him to a world of violence and betrayal. His large blue eyes witnessed the darker sides of human nature, shaping his distrust of authority and power

Despite his rough upbringing, Kalel had a knack for learning. He often sneaked away to attend lectures at the nearby university, absorbing knowledge like a sponge. He particularly admired an old scholar and allomancer who took him under his wing, mentoring him in the ways of both knowledge and combat. It was this scholar who discovered that Kalel was an Allomancer, recognizing his potential as a Coinshot, a skill that would later define his path but also revealing the man he’d known had not been his father.

Kalels life took a dark twist when his teacher was murdered by inquisitors searching for a half noble allomancer. Kalel was captured and was experimented on. The experiments involved feruchemical spikes rather then allomantic ones. Using his F-steel spike to store speed he escaped the inquisitor and fled to his old teachers house. Upon returning he found a large amount of marks left behind. Taking them Kalel set off into the night the sounds of inquisitors chasing him. He ducked into an ally way and… walked out into a brightly lit street bustling with people? Kalel had accidentally stumbled into allyverse. Upon getting a grasp on what had happened he decided to use his teachers fortune to purchase a house in the smokestacks. Upon further research he’s decided to try and join the Dark Alley.

I like it! I'm not super good at giving critiques, but there's a couple points I noticed.

  1. First off, I'll give you fair warning that Koloss will likely want you to do some balancing. All three of those powers are quite good, especially F-steel. I'm sure this combination of abilities will still be possible, as long as the character has enough negative aspects to balance it out. Adding additional flaws will probably help, especially if they impact his combat capabilities.
  2. I'm not sure if it makes too much sense that Inquisitors would have wanted to test Hemalurgic spikes on him, especially considering that they were Feruchemical spikes, which would have been hard to get and quite valuable. (Most Inquisitors had F-gold spikes, so they already knew how to use them.) However, I'm not sure if that will be problematic or not. If it is, I'm sure there could be ways to tweak it so that it works. One idea that could potentially also help with balancing is to make him seem a bit more like an experiment. He could be a failed attempt to create a new type of Hemalurgic construct and have some serious weaknesses as a result. I'm not much of Hemalurgy expert, so I'm not sure how exactly this could work, but I'm sure someone could help with ideas for this if you wanted to. It would change your character quite a bit, so it's just an idea. Don't do it unless you want to.
  3. This is something that you would have to talk to @Koloss17 about, but I noticed that this character could potentially fit into some of the stuff that's going on in the background. I don't really know all of what's going on, but what I do know is that the current main villain (who is also spiked) has had dealings with the Dark Alleys (that might even be how he acquired his spikes? I'm not sure), as well as some mysterious entity that seems to be plotting behind the scenes. Like I said, I don't know the details, but it caught my attention that your character is interested in the Dark Alleys and is also spiked. Again, you'd have to talk to Koloss about whether some sort of connection could work out, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Good luck with the rest of the character creation process!

This is all pretty spot on! I agree that the character could use some flaws, and that the experiment-ness could help with that.

I will also say that you are diving into fairly theoretical territory. We don’t really have a clear idea what the first few hundred years of the Lord Ruler’s reign was like, past that he was less in control than he was during Era 1 and more experimental with figuring out the different metallic arts. This means that the world is largely your oyster, so long as the story you tell is realistic and consistent.

@Wits instant noodles, I think you’re largely on the right track, but need a bit more to bring the character to life. What are his motivations? His dreams? What made him the way he is?

No problem! Have fun character building! And don’t be too hard on yourself about the character. Your first Alleyverse character will never be perfect, and the more you spend RPing, the better sense of a character you’ll get.

A few notes I thought prudent to mention:

1. It seems to me that, by the timeline you've set forth, Kalel should be able to Compound Feruchemical speed. Post-Era 1, Metalborn cannot Compound with abilities granted by Hemalurgic spikes, thanks to something Marsh calls "identity taint" I believe.

However, Kalel was born pre-Catacendre, and indeed, pre-Final Empire. Nothing is stopping him from Compounding (unless he doesn't know about Compounding, which is fair). Even with an injured leg, I personally think this could prove problematic. Though depending on how blind he is, this could be a non-issue.

2. How does his sister fit into his backstory? Did he leave her in the North? Did she join him in the street gang? Was she also abducted by Inquisitors?

3. Very complex personality. Not a criticism - I'm just genuinely impressed. If you manage to accurately encompass all his character traits as you roleplay, I think this character would have a lot to offer.

Shoot your totally right 😂! I forgot that compounding was a thing. I should probably fix that somehow cause that is quite a bit over powered. Though question in general- how does that kinda thing work? Cause the allyverse is kinda like outside of time kinda right? So do the rules of just whatever time they come from apply?

That does seem to be the norm. And we have precedent - Marsh can still Compound via both of his Atium spikes, despite living past the Catacendre. This must be because he gained his Hemalurgic spikes before Harmony's Ascension.

Oh yeah, I hadn’t thought about him being pre-Catacendre. I had figured identity contamination would fix that issue.

The easiest fix I can think of is changing his backstory so that he received the spike after reaching the Alleyverse, although that would require some substantial backstory changes.

That could definitely be possible. Hemalurgy can do a lot of weird things, so that explanation should work if you can’t think of anything else.

That's a fair explanation. I think that could fly, so long as the nature of the third spike remains mysterious.

Another obstacle could be a lack of knowledge. Compounding is really non-intuitive, especially to non-Arcanists. It took a Sliver to fully realize the potential, and then a group of Inquisitors and extensive amount of time to finally crack the code.

It is possible interacting with the DA would enlighten Kalel towards the possibility, but the presence of the third spike could still keep him from Compounding.

Okay I think I’ll go with the third spike interfering with the compounding. I feel it might just be too easy for him to discover compounding too quickly and at that point the character becomes a bit more powerful then anyone wants.

I agree with the other folks here. It could work if you want it to, as Hemalurgy weird. However, another option is just shifting to A-Iron instead. It can do a lot of similar shenanigans, and imo spurs more creativity than A-steel does. Given that your character’s main ability seems to be speed, a change in allomantic ability could be fine. Though of course, you get to call the shots when it comes to your character!

Another thing I notice is that there’s a lot of similar traits to my current character and main villain of the current era, Perses. He’s a post-Catecendre Scadrian that has also been spiked to augment his powers. The similarities I’m noticing:

-Twinborn (though mine is naturally born, A-Bronze F-Tin)

-Hemalurgist (Mine was spiked willingly with A-Steel and A-Iron, while yours was unwillingly spiked with feruchemantic abilities)

-Blind (Perses was born blind while yours was presumably made blind)

-utilizes steelsight to see (Perses relies on it less given that he wasn’t born with it, but yours was)

-gang affiliations (were actually pretty similar here. Poverty and not a lot of options leads to a need to seek power in unsavory places)

-emotional volatility (yours from spike experiments, mine from being essentially tortured by a demon)

These aren’t bad things; I actually think these foil aspects of the characters could be employed to great effect if they ever end up crossing paths! Just things to note.
