xinoehp512 he/him Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 Quote 43 minutes ago, Ookla the Lurker said: Which part of their arc couldn't be fulfilled in exactly the same way with foresight instead of physical time travel? The part where they, physically, go back in time. Nekorb traveled from the future to prevent something bad happening. The other could depend on whether or not we have more time jumps moving forwards; he returns home at the end of his arc, and he's already been away for twelve years. I'm reluctant to add another large chunk of time from any more time jumps to that, so time travel. 48 minutes ago, Ookla the Lurker said: Then why did they time travel instead of not time travelling, both possible without outside influence, what is the causal factor that initiates the loop? If there is none then every moment in time that could conceivably loop, does loop, not all of them are simultaneously possible in the same timeline so the timeline splits. I mean, I've read about it in books before and it's never been a problem. 52 minutes ago, Ookla the Lurker said: But at the point in time that people actually travel, that point will be now, so it's functionally identical. And even then, people could travel from the future to a point further in the past than the present, again it's functionally identical. The idea behind it is to coordinate it with the posts in the thread. So you can't change what has already been posted, but you can make a character that at some point in the theoretical future traveled back in time to say, prevent a catastrophe. Because that causes the timeline to be changed, you can't get any paradoxes.

Quote But why do we need people to go back in time physically for the story to work? Why can't someone have had a vision of the future and be trying to prevent it? It introduces so many headaches, inconsistencies, retcons and handwavings that just saying 'I want time travel so that I can say that my character time travelled' is really not enough for me to be able to support it's inclusion. 1 minute ago, Ookla the Phoenix said: I mean, I've read about it in books before and it's never been a problem. Quote Yeah I understand the principle, but there's literally no in-world reason that anyone would abide by that restriction, so if say Voidus escapes the barrier, learns about a time machine and really wants his rock back again, why in the world wouldn't he do that? Sure I as a writer would have agreed to not do that but if that's his primary motivation how can I possibly not let him do that? Why would no one in the world try to change the past, only the future? Why wouldn't someone try to stop Adonalsium from Shattering? Why wouldn't someone go back and kill TLR before he Ascended? Why wouldn't someone warn Aona and Skai about Odium? That would require so much suspension of disbelief and handwaving that I legitimately am not sure I could comfortably participate in the RP anymore. Completely immersion breaking, and again there's still no actual benefit from it that I can see other than having it for the sake of having it. Sorry that this got a little extreme but I am honestly confused as to why anyone would want this. 2

But it's straight up a violation of the basic principle that dictates all of existence. Some people can overlook that, I have a lot of trouble doing that. I understand. Sometimes I have difficulty suspending disbelief as well, especially on some of the weirder parts. This can probably be avoided in most cases. I personally go with random jitter in extended chronological dimensions and spontaneous creation as fits the circumstances to explain this specific paradox. 12 minutes ago, Ookla the Lurker said: Yeah I understand the principle, but there's literally no in-world reason that anyone would abide by that restriction, so if say Voidus escapes the barrier, learns about a time machine and really wants his rock back again, why in the world wouldn't he do that? Because he physically can't. These restrictions are meant to be physical laws, after all. 15 minutes ago, Ookla the Lurker said: Sorry that this got a little extreme but I am honestly confused as to why anyone would want this. It opens up more potential ideas, which is always a good thing if it doesn't create problems. For instance, time travel featured in a useful manner (storytelling-wise) in the cases of both Nogard and Nekorb. In this case, you have expressed concern, and so I am trying to iron out the wrinkles of this particular idea. I think that there should be limits on time travel for sure. I don't think that it should be used in any excessive manner. But I do think that it is a plot device that could, potentially, be useful.

These restrictions are meant to be physical laws, after all. Quote Ok, either time travel to the past is possible or it's impossible. You can't have it both ways. Anyone traveling from the future to the present is traveling to the past. And at the point in time that they do jump into the present the NOW clock is no longer there and so they are moving to the past relative to it. If we need to we can go through an example here but I hope this is clear. 23 minutes ago, Ookla the Phoenix said: It opens up more potential ideas, which is always a good thing if it doesn't create problems. Quote Time travel in itself only opens up the possibility of time travel existing, any story that results from that could originate from something else just as easily. Especially if we want to limit it to a single timeline and no ability to change the past, that severely limits anything that is unique to time travel. Some people might think it's a cool backstory element, personally I don't find it particularly interesting but some do, but if that's all the justification for keeping it I don't think it's worth it. It's just flavour.

Quote I think at this point we probably need to put the time travel elements to a vote, or if people want to trust the mods to do it we can come to a decision. (Although now that I think about it, knowing whether or not people want to leave it to the mods would in itself probably need a vote so may aswell just vote) I'll put a poll in the chat thread for now, we may need to create a thread dedicated to rules arbitration in future, there have been a few people wanting things to be a little more clearly organized recently.

Lord Meeker he/him Posted November 29, 2018 Author Posted November 29, 2018 "Very much so." Sephtis said and proceeded to eat Ioc's inner voice. A command center Officer walked up to Sephtis. "Vax has been conquered my Lord." "Good take us there."
Gancho Libre he/him Posted November 29, 2018 Posted November 29, 2018 Ioc's mind went silent. It expected to be killed for screaming. Then, it realized that, perhaps, Solace could control the volume of his voices. Ioc sighed. Then, Ioc sighed again. In doing so, Ioc made an amazing discovery. It didn't need to breath. Trapped in this spike, Ioc was more free than it had ever been! Wait... what was that gnawing sensation? Ioc... felt like it was dyuing. Only one thing left to do. "SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLACE!!!!! Lord Meeker he/him Posted December 6, 2018 Author Posted December 6, 2018 Sephtis tapped his fingers against the arm of his chair. He was having connection problems with General Dread. A mind link would have been much easier. "The connection is spotty but we can get you though." The communications director said. "Great patch him in." Sephtis responded. "My Lord." The General's voice was scratchy. "We... conqured... Vax. Reinforcements... Please advise." Sephtis sighed. "Takes us straight to Vax." "Confirmed sir."

Gancho Libre he/him Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 Ioc thought, then mentally externalized the voice of Chaos. 'You've... always been stronger than me,' Ioc said to it. 'You've aided me when I've been useless,' The Voice of Chaos rumbled in agreement. 'Well,' Ioc thought, 'I'm having a little trouble right now. I was separated from my power. As soon as I leave Solace's head, I die,' The Voice of Chaos was still as it thought. 'What would you do?' Ioc thought to it.

'I'd shove aside all of your weaknesses, all of your stupid morals, and win. Your own storming intelligence makes you weak. You have to think through everything. You have to regulate your own moves. I am not like that. I am everything about you that cannot be regulated. I am he who cannot be predicted. 'That is enough to win,' Ioc paused. There was... something alluring about being able to let go, to just... lose. Ioc hadn't lost very much before, but this battle? Against Solace? Humiliation. 'He could have killed you,' Chaos whispered. 'He let you live because your own restrictions make you weak. You are pitiful,' Ioc trembled, sensing truth in what was said. 'I will not give in,' it said. 'I... won't be me anymore. I'll just be... you,' 'You've had your chance,' Chaos whispered. 'You've lived in that body for over 16 years, bottling me up. Out of what? Jealousy. Jealousy that you can not be as powerful as I. It's time you give me my chance. I will kill this imbecile, inhabit his mind. You could never do that,' 'I... the laws of the Alleyverse...' 'Mean nothing. Do you see this guy, Solace, he could have crumpled you up like a tin can. You are only alive because he let you. You cannot press that advantage. Only I can. Give up,' 'No. I will not-' 'GIVE UP!!!! LET ME DO THIS!!!!!' 'I-' Chaos took control. Quote As you could assume from letting a persona you made up take control over your own brain, Ioc was, effectively dead. The Voice of Chaos may still speak to Ookla the Meeker.
