Question

There are three races on Yolen. Human, dragon, and ??? (do we know that one yet?). Ati and Leras were both human before their Ascension, but do we have confirmation of any of the other races of any of the Vessels?

The only non-human Vessel confirmed is Ambitions. Uli Da was Sho Del.

Is Uli Da a Sho Del?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Yeah.

Chaos [PENDING REVIEW]

Can we post that?

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Yeah you can go ahead and post that. That's fine.

I figured that from the...

Right, the naming convention makes it really obvious.

But that's not posted on the Dragonsteel sample so...

Brandon Sanderson [PENDING REVIEW]

Right. But that's canon. It's pretty obvious to me... And so it's fine with me canonizing it. I mean, I've been coy with it for years. But when I say there are Shards that aren't human. There are three races on Yolen... Adding the math together is going to get you a pretty obvious answer.

Well, Odium

Questioner

I wanted to ask, is the Shardbearer [Vessel] of Odium a human?

Brandon Sanderson

Not any longer.

Questioner

Ok, that's... I didn't expect that one.

Brandon Sanderson

But what the answer to your question you really want to know is, was he originally human?

Questioner

Yeah.

Brandon Sanderson

Yes. That's a good question! But I don't think he counts anymore.

Footnote: Rayse is the Vessel of Odium

I guess we don't actually have confirmation that Tanavast was, but surely...

But I totally support EdgLi being Sho Del and Bavadin being Dragon. Or vice versa.

Technically none of the shards are of their previous race, but I don't think that counts for this question.

Edgli sounds like a dragon to me, for some reason. She seems non-intervention like Frost is, maybe? Just uh...with more teeth behind it.

I kind of like the idea that Bavadin is/was a Dragon since we know that they're shapeshifters. When Brandon tells us not to get too hung up on "gender, race, or even human appearance" it might be that Bavadin's whole avatar scheme is just a superpowered extension of the kind of shapeshifting that she could already have done pre-Ascension. But that's just guesswork on my part.

She mostly sounds...haughty(?) to me, a lot of indifference to what doesnty directly impact her.  But that is viewing it through my own modern and as far as I know Human perspective. Do we know anything about the Sho Del on a cultural level?

PS for what it's worth Nalthis has real knowledge of Dragons:

Is "dragon's nest" a Nalthis to English translation or are dragons part of their culture? Is Edgli a dragon?

Peter Ahlstrom

I don't know the answer to that.

Brandon Sanderson

Dragons are mythological on Nalthis, but there is a reason that the stories exist. It's not a translation quirk.
