sorry all, but I have to go to bed early tonight. I’m serving at church tomorrow.

Egis appeared hovering above the ink-soaked ground, right next to Malevolence. She placed a hand on his shoulder, and suddenly his mind was filled with an overwhelming flood of images, breaking up his thoughts. Landscapes, faces, burning emotions—it all flashed by in rapidfire secession. As soon as one fizzled out, the next came almost instantly, slamming itself to the forefront of his mind with little subtlety.

“A fellow scientist, I see. Were you responsible for the Narration suppressor?”

Rebus… for once, Rebus didn’t know what to feel. So within the cabin he simply waited.

“That is to aid you.” Rebus said. Then he put out his other hand, and summoned Redemption. The Blade ( @TwinStorm) hovered within his grasp, not touching his hand. “And this is your reward.”
-

Rebus watched this, but did not stop it. “I’m sorry, Balitan.” He whispered. “You were a good partner.”
-

“It depends upon what you wish to do.” Rebus sighed. “But am letting this take its course.”
-

Rebus stood, a Plotblade in each hand, his coat billowing in the wind. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes, and slammed the two Blades together.
All at once, it was one Blade. The Blade of what, Rebus did not know - perhaps it would redeem those who were evil. Perhaps it would turn them to villainy. Perhaps it would even do both, a never-ending cycle of redemptions and betrayal.
Rebus tossed the new Plotblade to Malevolence. “Have fun.” He said, smiling. And then, he disappeared.

The Blade burned with golden light. I am not yours to beck and call. I have seared you once, and you will burn again.

Amid lightning's thunder and the pouring of rain, Malevolence began the ritual.

Balitan appeared on the mountaintop, held captive by Malevolence's technology. The sacrifice had arrived. Malevolence looked to the skies with Mordite blade bared, and waited. Here rested his plan entire. If the Authors denied him, then all his planning was for naught. He waited, staring into the clouds, and...

A voice spoke.

For a time, the sun rises and burns,
For a time life writhes and flourishes.
Yet in the end the night comes,
And all will be brought to dust.

Lord of the Dark, we call thee!
King of the Fallen, we speak thy name!
Prince of the Twisted path, we summon thy power!
This world shall be yours once more!

@TwinStorm

A voice continued the chant, rumbling like the storm itself.

9/10mmHB#2 jumped at Bacon’s arrival, drawing Futility. “Nah, he’s with me. Or I’m with him. Something like that,” Eden said. “Yeah, uh, it’s said it’s a Plotblade. Sounds like some meta-“ *screech*, three star hawks censoring the word. “Storming birds. Won’t even let me curse properly,” Eden conceded. The birds made some sort of gagging sounds that Eden interpreted as laughter.

"Quick!" said Bacon. "The ritual requires characters from three Authors to speak a certain set of words, and then have someone sacrifice someone important to them. If we can disrupt any part of that, the ritual will fail."

A clone of him split off and flew away.

The wind swirled fiercely, the words echoing for far longer than they should have.

A cold feeling settled on the souls of everyone in the vicinity. The ritual had begun.

--

Charnyx felt rather than heard the ritual begin. A subtle, yet effectual strengthening.

He cannot stop you, his bonded spirit whispered. Destroy him.

With a single thought, the pathetic chains surrounding him became dust. Charnyx glanced upwards.

"There you are, Bacon," he said with a smile.

Death Omen vibrates in Eden’s grasp. “I don’t really need this right now,” she whispers. A melody begins to play. Something she recognizes. She whispers along as the black sea swallows them whole.

——

Inkwell, has drawn a piano and is playing a highly repetitive melody. The rain does not stop. Instead, it intensifies. Black rain falling from the sky at a rate  unprecedented by the wildest imaginations of human history. In seconds, the ocean has risen to the peak. In the blink of an eye, the pen is completely empty, but everything is under water. Or rather, submerged in ink under Inkwell’s control. The current smashes Malevolence to the seabed. Inkwell floats in a bubble, Eden and several others occupying similar places. But he can’t keep this up for long, and he only has a few more tricks.

Charnyx did not gasp as the ink buried him. Why would he? He had no need to breathe.

He swam towards Bacon. For so long the fool had eluded him. No longer.

An enormous shark exploded towards him, mouth gaping. With a casual flick of his knife, he dispatched it, then reanimated it under his control. It spun around, ready to lunge at Bacon, but The Narrator tore space open with a flick of his fingers. A reasonable defence: he'd struggle to directly affect the creature while it was under Charnyx's control, but there was nothing stopping him from simply... sending it elsewhere.

Unfortunately for Bacon, Charnyx was ready for that. His bonded withergeist stretched its power, redirecting Bacon's tear, and suddenly the two were standing face-to-face.

Charnyx stabbed him. "Surprise," he said mockingly.

As he did, he felt the second part of the ritual begin.

The withergeists continued to swirl, pulling on the water as they did so.

A vortex formed in the sea of ink, the waters receding from the mountain.

A loud scream rose from the withergeists, anticipation building.

The earth began to shake.

Mordite everywhere began to hum expectantly.

A thunderclap sounds near Malevolence. An omnipresent voice speaks seemingly from every direction "Sixty Pages you have left to fulfill your promise, Malevolence."

As the flood rose, Balitan vanished. If anyone noticed, it would be too late, regardless, for as soon as he appeared in the depths of an ocean far, far away, he was already a fine, bloody mist.

There would be others, Fog knew, but . . . hopefully this would delay things for the time being.

Holding one hand against a wall, Malevolence summoned Antagonist. The black crown appeared on his head in a form not dissimilar to that which it had taken when wielded by Rebus. The same, actually, save for a quiet flickering of white sparks, playing between the crown's tips.

Immediately, Malevolence straightened. The barrage of images and emotions ceased, rebuffed by the Plotblade's power. The villain smiled. "Is that the best you can do?" He pointed Darkseeker, and a wave of liquid darkness sprung forth towards Egis.

Even as he did this, however, a new emotion entered Malevolence's mind. Regret. Regret and sorrow, for what he would give up.

Malevolence frowned. Regret? He'd dealt with this already. Surely...

It struck him.

Antagonist and Redemption are one. I cannot use Antagonist without allowing Redemption to grasp at my soul, attempting to drag me into the light.

Malevolence gritted his teeth. It was a risk he would have to take. His devotion to evil was strong. Redemption would not overcome it.

Eden stared. Two Plotblades. Couldn’t be better. Inkwell motioned at her. He was unarmed, what was he doing?

——

Time to see if the plan worked. Inkwell waited until Malevolence rebuffed Egis and Fog’s attacks, then continued his approach. He could still use the pen’s switch… no. That wouldn’t be enough. He’d already come this far. Time to finish this. “You need a sacrifice,” he told Malevolence. “If I’m honest, I thought the ocean was enough to stop you. Rip away the Pages, or Darkseeker. But my author seems to have abandoned me. So I’d rather die than be a withergeist under your control.” He tossed Shadowlight aside. “You want a sacrifice? Here he is.”

Malevolence saw his death. Not a certain doom, but a death of Redemption. Instead of sacrificing Balitan, he could turn Darkseeker upon himself. The ritual would be completed, the Witherlord summoned into a body already impaled by a Mordite blade. The Mantle could be shattered, the Witherlord's looming threat defeated forever. He felt the Thread's rejoicing, he saw the joy and relief and felt it all, and knew that it was good.

Malevolence shook himself from the vision and spun, slashing at Eden with his dark dagger.
