She turned and hopped across a narrow street onto another series of roofs.

Eden steeled herself. “Just like the first gig. All you gotta do is cross the curtain.” She took a deep breath, then jumped awkwardly across, landing with one knee up on the other side. “Wasn’t so bad?”, she panted, then looked up. She was losing the kid! She got up and started running, barely keeping her balance.

The winged person looked back at her and glared for a moment before dropping down into a low alleyway and running around the corner.

Good. The streets. Eden leap down and sped up, her feet on solid ground. She started to catch the figure. “I just want the kid safe. Let’er go!”

She sighed softly to herself and pulled over a large shelf full of pottery in passing, which crashed to the ground behind her and left broken ceramic shards all over the place.

Heavy boots stomped right through the ceramic. Eden picked up a heavy, blunt shard and threw it, aiming for the figure’s legs.

@Aeoryi

The thing screeched and knocked the knife out into the street with a wing, raising the spear.

"Huh?" Ribbon asked, confused again.

Hmmm… since the end goal for Inkwell and 9/10 is for them to fight and eventually both die as my first characters, I think it’s fine if I start a secondary character to work with.
Bass players never got enough recognition. You needed one to start a band, but who ever pays attention to the stable thrum at the back of a song when there’s the drums beating the rhythm into someone’s soul like gospel, the vocals stealing the stage, or the guitar begging for attention? No one in their right minds. Eden only played bass because her bandmates were more experienced with their own instruments- she was primarily an electric guitar player. But it was good enough to be a part of something greater than herself. Mostly.
Then, one day, everything disappeared. Ripped from her normal college life, her band, her family, appearing… here. The middle of a walled city that looked like something out of Monty Python. “Where the —— am I?” She screamed at someone passing by, who seemed to ignore her for no reason at all. Mostly. Maybe the fry in her voice was a bit… intimidating. She fingered the knife in her pocket, seeing some lunatic dressed up like a freaking medieval knight ride by on a real horse with a hand what looked like a very real bastard sword, a very possibly real corpse of something that looked just short of human draped across the horses rump. First order of business? Find friendly people.

Eden stopped to catch her breath as a minstrel-looking person appeared in a flash. “Hey there, Lute Solo. You look magic, can you stop the bird person from kidnapping that kid?” She pointed at the winged person.

"Don't ask me," said Bacon. "Generally speaking, I have no idea."

Bacon continued to play the flute as a second Bacon swirled into existence from the notes. "That's your opener? Really?" He gave Malevolence a disappointed look. "I would have thought an expert villain such as yourself would know better than that. Do you truly think I care about the destruction of this form?"

Malevolence’s expression darkened. “Fine. How about: give me the pages, or I will kill this form of yours and take them by force, then kill every person you’ve ever cared about.” He paused, grinning. “Although it seems most of your past friends are already dead. Perhaps you won’t care about that either.”

"Well . . . I have a feeling there's something in that palace we need to capture. An artifact, or a prisoner, or something."

The High Priest of Plot nodded grimly. "It shall be done."

He entered his temple, striding through the lavish corridors, empty of life but in rich in decoration, past mosaics and murals, until he finally reached a bare, spartan room, empty except for a fireplace in the wall and a red cushion.

He knelt on the red cushion, closing his eyes. "Oh, Forger of the Dreams. Come to me, with the answers I seek."

--

"Surely there are secrets left in your brain for me to mine. Tell me, what other powers are in your domain. How did you so strongly hold your tyranny."

There was silence for a time, and then, coming from everywhere at once and yet also out of the fireplace, a voice spoke.

You know I cannot come to you. I am but that which I forge. Dreams cannot enter the world of the living. Not without… great consequence.

There was a pause, then the voice continued.

But I can tell you from whence this darkness has come, and why it bedevils your sect.

“I was no tyrant!” The king exclaimed forcefully. “I served my people. That crown was our sacred artifact, passed down from my forefathers, given then by the Creator. He formed it from his own heart as he lay dying of wounds given him by the Traitor lord of Shadows.” He lowered his eyes. “I, least of my line, have failed the sacred charge given my ancestors by the Creator. To protect our people, to serve them, and never to use the Crown for personal gain.”

For the first time since middle school, Eden is forced to confront the fact that yelling at her problems isn’t always the solution. “I don’t know if that would help, but if its any consolation, I would eat that sandwich.”

“Nice trick,” she responded, a little confused. She peered into the basement. “What a cliche.” She straightened her jacket and descended. “You coming?”, she asked, glancing up at Bacon.

A couple lanterns were spiked into the dirt walls, though none were lit.

Shuffling could be heard in the room beyond.
