"Mm," she hummed, deftly snatching the weapon from him.

The mordite-ink blade ripped out of the sheath, then started sucking away at Fog’s essence, greedily drinking in the mordite in Fog’s system to purify the alloy and improve the copy. It melted into shadows as it did so, reforming in the sheath on Inkwell’s belt. “Nice try. I don’t really plan on fighting you, though. It’s not like you need it, in any case.”

Spoiler

note- Cleo says it’s approximately 12% mordite, 85% ink, 3% unknown cognitive material, after that interaction.

More mist just formed in it's place.

She dissolved and collected a tiny sample to use later.

"How did you make it?"

“It was 9/10’s idea, actually. Both the original sword and the… improved version. He noticed in the Thread that you had caused Malevolence to abandon his armor, and that left a few shards of material behind. I assimilated one into the blade, so I have you to thank for it.”

She also made some sort of a deal with him.

Inkwell furrowed his brow. “He also said you let Malevolence go. Why?”

I made no such deal.

"I want to see him fail."

She sighed and appeared nearby. She looked . . . different, now. Darker. More smoke-like.

What?

"Hmph!"

She stole his tongue.

I'm with Inkwell, she eventually said.

Okay. Ribbon appeared near Inkwell and Fog.

Spoiler

Oops. I misinterpreted something. Fog just let the Guardian try and kill Malevolence, and then it didn’t.

Inkwell was somewhat less surprised at Ribbons appearance. He was getting more used to these kind of things. “Good to see you again. You’re doing well?”

Hello.

You seem smoke-like, that's new. Ribbon said telepathically, What's Inkwell been up to?

"I'm doing quite fine, thank you." It always bothered her that people would ask questions and pretend like there was more than one answer. "Although I suppose I should ask if you are alright, considering what I tried to do to your mind."

“I got better. Maybe if I was an old man, it would have caused problems. 9/10 is still a problem, but for a later day. Today’s problem, as you probably already know, is the bet between Rebus and Malevolence. They are fighting over our corpses, and I don’t know about you, but I’ve already fou- well I can’t say I fought them, more like I managed to exist nearby momentarily and ran away very quickly. I thought that either we kill one of them, together, or we find a way to break this game they want to play with us before they break us.”

Fog sighed.

"They won't die. They have too much plot armor still. We need to weaken them somehow."

"My blade works quite well before it strikes." He grumbled. "Perhaps there is nothing you can offer me, Rebus, because your Antagonist status is slipping away from you. All that emotion and depth is holding you back. Being honest, I'm surprised you still have it."

He paused for a second, and then asked, "How good are you at making devices?"

Rebus’s expression was a mix of bemused, intrigued, and vaguely disappointed - until Desolation spoke once more.
Rebus grinned. “Desolation, I have a sci-fi aesthetic and a doctorate in Applied Metaphysics. What do you need made?”

Kyler rolled out of the way. “What the hell? How many of these can you throw before your worn down??” He stood up and ran back a few paces

Rebus - calmly walking towards Kyler - held up four fingers. “I could give you these powers, if your boss gave me something in return.” Then he spun, sweeping his leg up for a roundhouse kick even as he continued speaking. “You could also defect, of course.”

Are you... Okay with being a Withergeist? Ribbon asked.

That's good to hear. Ribbon responded, I'm sorry you didn't get more time to be a Narrator. I almost feel guilty that I get this chance and you don't now.

“What do you mean, Rebus won’t hurt us? He’s been busy trying to kill me, among other things 9/10 won’t tell me about. And last I checked, Fog only survived Malevolence by corrupting her own soul. You aren’t threatened at all that two of the strongest antagonists in the Thread are hunting us like a game?”

"Malevolence isn't going to go after Fog, probably." She sighed. "Rebus seemed like quite the delightful fellow when I talked to him. But being honest, I didn't really glean much from our interaction, besides that he's not quite the evil villain you think he is." She winced. "That'd be the title for Malevolence."

“I called him an antagonist, not a villain. He was witty… when he tried to incinerate me. But in any case, we don’t have to kill either of them. Just break the game up, or stalemate it. Then we can go our separate ways. Or I suppose you could walk away now. Fog, do you have anything to add?”

"If you want me to fight either, or intervene with conflict that I don't have a stake in, you've severely underestimated my character." Ribbon warned.
