“Let’s see… Hacob was a Narrator. He held Plot Development at some point. A long time ago, he negotiated a deal with the General on behalf of the Brave Adventurers. Tried to do the same with the Great Wizard, but was instead attacked by an army of bunnies.”

He looked up at the Archivist.

“Who writes these anyway?”

They shrugged helplessly.

“Well, not much useful there,” he said to Ribbon.

Thanks! I did, but there is so much to read that I missed that I'm playing it so that my characters don't know so I don't get details wrong or have to spend hours reading lol.

"Lightning chickens. They travel in flocks, and tend to appear when the plot is moving too quickly. I think they're attracted to plot progression." Ribbon said softly. "They migrate long distances over periods of time, but they might give us a lead."

Ryver collapsed as time for his body resumed. Eepy squawked as she and Cadewyn also fell behind him.

They had been stuck, from the moment they had gone to that mansion with Nameless and Sequence, in a frozen bubble of time. Unable to perceive what was going on around them or where they were.

Eventually Ryver had gotten a thought out to his Author, and promised that he would provide someone willing to become his Narrator by the end of the month. And the Author had broken them out and placed them somewhere.

Where were they anyway? He looked around, at a sterile lab room, like a hospital on his homeworld, and an old man near a table.

"Hey!" Cadewyn called. "Who are you? And where are we?"

@Keke

Sorry I had to leave for a bit. Back now.

the scientist jumped. “Aye dios mio!” He yelped. “Who are you? And how did you get in here?”

The darkness seems almost amused.

"You are here physically, but remember that this is no physical place. Those laws do not hold it."

*agressive typing as i Google the definition of wistful.* ... does Rebus want a hug tooooooo, or is it cause his author seems to hate him. Dont worry buddy ive heard heir talk about you 😭 hes very proud of his child.

Keke stood up. "Ive gotta go. But atlas. Always remember. Im on your side." They turned to rebus got close and serious. "If you do a single goddamn thing to hurt her I will." [Censored threats that are scary enough to scare Rebus trust gng.] "Alright?" They asked smiling.

Rebus smiled, and a pen and paper materialized in front of him. "Welcome to my empire, then."

Rebus is pretty sure he's given up most chances at love - he doesn't regret it, but still wishes there had been some other way

Rebus laughed, grinning. "Alright."

"What is practical is practical only in relation to one's ideals." Malevolence countered. "You would do anything for your ideals. You merely hold survival as the highest ideal, whereas know the truth, that evil is worth more than simple survival. What is survival, without an ideal to survive for?" He shrugged. "But your point is made. What reward then, do you suggest?"

"We must reach the door!" Lyric cried, breaking briefly from his song. "This mall is infested with his touch. If we can but reach the exit, we may yet escape!"

"Interesting." Balitan examined the information. "You'd need a blueprint, of sorts. Perhaps... yes, an intriguing problem. I'll salvage what I can as quickly as possible, then report to work on this new problem."

"Instrumental convergence, Malevolence. Existing is the prerequisite to almost any goal." Rebus smiled. "A reward... The highest stakes would be that of the Witherlord Mantle, followed by the Lost Page required to acquire it. I suspect you - rightly - would agree to neither. Fealty would likely be cut short by betrayal, though a favor could serve as a reward. If my plans progress as intended, I shall have up to five excess Plotblades - should you have an item of similar worth that could be my wager."

-

Jack glanced at him, then jumped. He easily crested the husks, spring-loaded heels propelling him a dozen feet into the air. Whether that would be sufficient distraction remained to be seen.

-

Rebus nodded. "Good. In addition to remaining here, I'll procure the last element required."

Aelinor had barely moved since kneeling down, staring off into space with a very hollow look. She barely reacted when Rebus appeared, and even less when Unintelligible addressed her. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet and level, purposefully devoid of emotion.
"She..." she started slowly. "Would have wanted... To be buried beside Fuzzy. And Cardinal. On her world, by the lake." She kept her eyes fixed forward, unblinking. "I don't know about a second choice. Nowhere else is special to her quite like... there." Slowly, avoiding looking at Sequence, Aelinor reached down and picked up Conflict where it sat on the ground beside Sequence. She spared a glance towards Rebus. "... I'll help you find somewhere."

Rebus's smile lessened, changing from unnerving grin to something more sane and civil. "I suspect I can be of use. I respected Sequence - she deserves the burial she would want. I only ask one thing in return."

It should be rather simple. You provide protection from forces that may be able to defeat me, such as beings with powers like yours. Add this region to your empire and shall be the administrator under your will, so you don’t have to micromanage yet another kingdom added to your rule.

And, of course, I am willing to serve in other ways, such as this man to be hunted

Rebus and Malevolence were arguing philosophy instead of making terms for a contest and he randomly dropped that in there as an offer/flex.

They entered a ruined stone courtyard, overgrown. Cricket looked up, memories running through his head, memories of his childhood. Where it had all began. Keep Chaisler, his birthplace.

He turned, facing Rebus. A storm was blowing in, as the winds picked up. He grinned. His Author was here.

"You know, Rebus." he remarked, casually. "You understand me more than anything. You know my story, you know what I've gone through. And you know why this must happen."

He slammed Redemption into a stone pillar, leaving it embedded there. He gestured for Rebus to do the same.

"Two blades. Plain steel."
