Ryna blinks in surprise, but then shakes it off. She had heard of this manner of travel. “As odd as it's going to sound,” Ryna said. “I understand. I have this same sort of signs that let me know where and when a thread is being woven.”

Ryna hesitates, then speaks more carefully, like she’s simplifying something she usually wouldn’t bother unpacking.

“Most people think the world works on cause and effect,” she tells Eli. “Do a thing, get a result. Neat. Predictable.”

She lifts one hand, fingers slightly apart, as if holding fabric.

“It doesn’t. It works like cloth.”

At Eli’s look, she exhales. “Not literal cloth. A weave. It's called the Loom. Every person, every place, every moment is a thread woven into it. Some threads are thick: wars, bloodlines, disasters. Others are so fine you don’t feel them until they’re pulled out.”

Her voice softens.

“When something ends the way it’s meant to, a thread snaps. Clean. Final. The cloth tightens around the gap and keeps its shape.”

She lowers her hand.

“That’s what an ending is. Not chaos. Not mystery. Just the weave moving on without that thread.”

Basically, all characters, plot lines, backgrounds, and stories.

This explanation I typed up reminds me of the Wheel of Time intro. Huh. Here it is if you haven't seen it. This is now canonically Ryna's theme song.

Cricket stood at a riverbank, watching the stream froth and churn, as the rushing water carried autumn's leaves towards the sea. This was a fitting place to do it.

He sat at the edge of the bank, watching the water dance around the bends, before carefully removing a sheet of paper from his bag. A letter.

He sighed, unfolding it, quickly scanning the contents he had written. This needed to be done, before the end.

“Dear Tam and Bat.” he breathed softly, feeling the breeze tousle his hair. Their names . . . Winds, the memories those blames brought back.

“It's been, honestly, a nightmare since you've been gone. I mean, I'm the last of us. Of all of us. New characters have taken our place, but I'm still here, gathering dust.” he sighed, trying to keep the bitterness out of his voice.

“The Thread . . . it's been bad. Rebus is still the Antagonist, and more and more of the Narrators are just tolerating him, even supporting him. I've been trying to resist, but he's so bloody devious. I can't make a move past him, so . . . we're going to duel. To end this.”

“Listen . . . Tam . . . Bat . . . you two are the reason I still fight. I can't leave, I can't die, till you've been avenged. You've been my best friends, and the only ones I could truly trust. With Rose gone too . . . listen, I . . .”  he sighed, rubbing his head.

“I don't even know if you can hear this. If you can, I . . . need strength. The fight I have before me . . . I'm not strong enough. It's not like fighting Malevolence, or even Malan. I can't beat him alone. I need your help, your strength.” Cricket paused for a moment.

“So . . . Winds, I just hope you can hear this. This needed to be said, before it ends.”

Um

I have a general idea of where this is going, but I can’t tell what’s going to happen in specific. I can honestly adapt to whatever should he choose to show up. Right now Erryin’s teleporting isn’t working, but Asharak’s still would if he wanted to pop in at a good time to get them out of there.

The one I’m in is a little busy right now; you could ask @Keke and @Shatter, as they just started one recently. If not, you can make your own and I’m sure people will join.

There are probably other people who have open plotlines rn too.

This is from haly.

Nothing happened for a long moment. The river’s passing left waves to beat upon the bank; any nearby trees rustled against the gusts of a sudden wind that left as soon as it came. Strangely, a single firefly drifted above the river now, as if brought by the wind.

An answer.

It was eaten by a fish.

Rats. Sorry. I don’t know why that— intrusive thoughts, I guess. An uncertain laugh accompanied the words. Um… rats. Uh. Well, anyway, I don’t know how you reached me. I haven’t been lucid in… I don’t even know how long it’s been.

Three more fireflies winked into existence around Cricket. I’m sorry for that, he said softly. I’m really sorry. I don’t know what happened, or where I am, or who’s keeping me here. But I will make it out. I will come back, and I’ll bring Tam and Rose with me.

Bat’s voice was beginning to fade as fireflies gathered in the air before Cricket, their glow growing almost too bright to look at.

In the meantime, I hope this will suffice.

The light vanished, extinguished all at once. A sphere dropped to the ground. A latticework of shining silver comprised it all the way through; the size was comparable to a ping-pong ball.

You’ve got this, Cricket, Bat conveyed fiercely. Remember who you are. You can do this.

The wind kept gusting, the river kept flowing. Cricket was left alone.

“I shall be available.” Then, Rebus turned to Malevolence, awaiting his reply.

Atlas watched as a small, well small compared to rebus, poked their head out. They knelt next to atlas. "Oh atlas. I didnt mean for this to happen." They pulled atlas into a hug. "I wish I could stop it but there are rules." they rub her back. "But listen. You cant die. I know you want to. But, there will be joy again. I promise. Eventually. It will hurt but in some ways cark (dark cep) is right. There's a way to get passed it. And to be able to help others with the knowledge and proof that you can make it through the rain is enough reason to live in itself."

atlas looked between her author and Rebus then sunk into her authors arms. "Is hr right? Will you always help me?"

they nod. "Yes. Im doing all i can to help you. Ask anyone. Hell ask Rebus im fighting for you."

“The war? It depends upon the factors in play - some things can be changed easily, while others remain the status quo even when they shouldn’t.” Rebus shrugged, beginning to lead them down the street. Civilian responses to him were mixed - some smiled and waved, while others stood at attention or bowed. A dog ran up to him at a fairly significant speed and enthusiastically rammed into Rebus’s leg as the rather sheepish owner caught up to them. “But this place - and the many like it across the empire - would be available to you.”

Rebus watched the exchange with a wistful smile.

Keke stood up. "Ive gotta go. But atlas. Always remember. Im on your side." They turned to rebus got close and serious. "If you do a single goddamn thing to hurt her I will." [Censored threats that are scary enough to scare Rebus trust gng.] "Alright?" They asked smiling.

"I..." She gripped Unintelligible's hand tightly, desperately, as she glanced back down at her wound. The scar tissue was gray and mottled with black.

Destroy... Destroy... Destroy...

Sequence sucked in a sharp breath through clenched teeth, clenching her eyes shut. "Oh... I..." She opened her eyes again to look over at the Great Wizard, struggling to focus on him.

Destroy... Destroy... Destroy...

Her face went a little pale, and she turned back to Unintelligible. Her eyes were... sad.
"You..." she started, her voice strained and slow. "Are the... bravest... most noble... p.. person... I have ever known..."

DESTROY! DESTROY! DESTROY!

Sequence winced, clenching her eyes tightly again as she held out her left hand to the side. Conflict appeared in it. She knew what she had to do.
"I... hope... one day... I'll find my way back... to you." Tears began to well in her eyes as Conflict took the form of a staff with a brilliantly glowing lantern on top. Sequence hissed softly as the light bathed her face. Struggling a bit, she lifted up the staff above her. As the light filled her eyes, one could see something... dark. Her eyes never left Unintelligible's face.

"I... love you," she whispered.

With a high-pitched whine, the lantern flared with temporarily blinding white light. As it faded, Conflict thudded against the floor beside Sequence. Her eyes burned in their sockets, black mist frantically trying to escape her body before being vaporized by Conflict's remaining light. There were still tears on her dull, lightless cheeks.

Unintelligible stared into Sequence's burned out eyes. "No." He whispered softly, bowing his head. This couldn't be real. It had happened so fast, it... "No." He whispered again. It could be real. In fact, he'd been expecting it. How could he save Sequence? He, a failure, a worthless fool had thought to be a hero... "No." He was trying to distract himself. To think about his failures rather than... Unintelligible raised his head, seeing Sequence's corpse again. The sight was like a dagger driven straight into his chest and twisted. Truly, he would have preferred the dagger.

Unintelligible gently reached out and cupped Sequence's lifeless hand in both of his. "I" He trembled, mouth twisting as tears began to flow. "I love you too." Tears blinded him, but he did not release Sequence's hand to wipe them away. "I'm sorry. I have loved you for a long time. Too long. I should have told you sooner. I just" His voice broke, and a silent sob shook his body. "I thought I had time. And I worried" He tried to chuckle, but it came out as another sob. "That you did not love me too."

Unintelligible's words failed him then. He clung to Sequence's hand, and he wept. He wept tears for what could have been, but more, he wept for what had been and was no more. He wept for Sequence, who saw him as a hero, who encouraged him, who more than any other Narrator was good, kind, and caring. He wept until he found he had no more tears to weep. He looked down at his hands, clutching Sequence's, and found a few more words to speak.

"You always believed in me, from the very beginning. I will try... I will be, a hero." His voice was quiet, broken, but firm.

Slowly, carefully, reluctantly, he set Sequence's hand down. Then he stood.

Unintelligble looked around the room with eyes red from crying. His gaze passed over Rebus without pausing, and landed on Aelinor.

"Will you... I mean, would you help me to..." He spoke in a voice etched with pain. "Would you help me find a resting place for Sequence?"

"What is practical is practical only in relation to one's ideals." Malevolence countered. "You would do anything for your ideals. You merely hold survival as the highest ideal, whereas know the truth, that evil is worth more than simple survival. What is survival, without an ideal to survive for?" He shrugged. "But your point is made. What reward then, do you suggest?"

"Interesting." Balitan examined the information. "You'd need a blueprint, of sorts. Perhaps... yes, an intriguing problem. I'll salvage what I can as quickly as possible, then report to work on this new problem."

@Keke

Bat felt the darkness pulling on him again, insistent and unrelenting. It would not let him speak again. It would smother him.

Something about it made his soul shiver. For so long he had existed in a state of dazed flatness--- though it had felt like only several seconds, he knew by the page count that he'd only briefly come aware after a long, long time. The fact that he could be unaware of time passing, the fact that he might never wake up again...

He shook off the darkness and reached desperately for Cricket.

I don't know what there is to forgive, he managed. But I forgive you. Always.

Angry, the darkness reared, smothered him, and he was gone once more.

Rirrom silently narrates the distance in any direction to be paradoxically infinite. Even though there was no indication of any distortion, if they were to run any more than twenty feet, they'd find out they'd be getting nowhere.
