I think he just happened to name a character Vengeance, with no ties to the other Vengeance.

as long as it's not the sword, which I kind of doubt because it shrugged, and Vengeance can't really do that, it's fine

Creating history is not the same as changing it, but perhaps I was unreasonable in my judgement.” Though Rebus’s rage had truly cooled, he had also realized that Storm was far more dangerous than even what he claimed Cricket would be. “I await the return you have promised. You may not have noticed the relevant post, but my Author did write the beginning of the duel after Cricket appeared to challenge me. You could alter what has occurred and pick up from there as though none of this has happened. Or you send all of this in a very different direction - because I too am dangerous.” Rebus blinked out of existence, leaving only the memory of his words and the sound of a collapsing vacuum.

A voice spoke to Rebus, audible only to him.

I am sorry to upset your careful plans, Rebus. Malevolence should have revealed his intent earlier. He has... not been himself, recently. Canonically, I suppose it is likely due to his becoming aware, in some small way, of my thoughts about him. But truly, it was my fault. In my absence I forgot who he was, who he is. He had lost his confidence, his penchant for the dramatic, these things which first made me enjoy writing him. He was sliding towards becoming a common schemer, not the true villain he deserves to be. Delayed as it is, this was a necessary step towards correcting that drift.

Jack reached his hand out as well, baffled. “That looks like empty space to me - just now, we passed through a wall.” 

Rebus nodded. “Should this have occurred at another time - should Sequence, Cricket, and Malevolence not have all abruptly changed in status - it would have been less jarring. I understand your motives.” Rebus paused for a moment, then began to smile. “Yes. I understand your motives quite well…”

All joy, all desire to live, to fight, was sucked away from Rebus. Only pain remained. There was no escape from the sorrow. Only despair awaited him. The physical light began to be sucked away as well.

Vengeance chuckled again.

Axzi has been long deposed. I do hate playing the hero, but once we combined I was able to quickly consume the rest of the gods. However, Axzi is strong, and he nearly escaped me several times, such as when agreeing to serve you. Axzi perhaps may serve you, but I have ensured Axzi as you knew him is no more. I know you can read the Thread so I have had to act the fool and conceal my motives.

However, this was all intended to bring you to me and to prove your worth as an ally.

I fully intend to work with you. However, I will not serve you as a lesser. I am powerful. I do not doubt you could kill me, but for the moment you have far larger issues to deal with and I would be a potentially fatal distraction if such a course of action occurred. However, as I earlier mentioned,I think this alliance would be beneficial to both of us.

Rebus’s eyes were dull and hollow. He stood stiff, stillness broken only as he began to speak. “Axzi - Vengeance, in truth. You wish to be my equal, and yet you clearly state I could defeat you. I have some advice for you. Before crushing the will to live, ensure there is nothing to fill the gaps.” And then, still with the dead-soul eyes Vengeance had instilled, Rebus smiled. It was a grin of bright-white teeth and murderous anticipation - a smile far removed from the expressions of a sane man. “But you are in luck, Vengeance. There are things more important to me than killing those who lie to me, twist my emotions, and then believe I shall accept them as my equal. Things far more important than that.” Patterns of light and darkness shifted around him, and Antagonist seemed to drink in the aura Vengeance was emitting. “A template will be quite useful to me.” Rebus echoed Vengeance’s laugh as a jewel of swirling blackness formed from the air and embedded itself among the tines of the crown.

Oh, fun! I’m not sure if I’ll get to Utah in time for it, though. 
Rebus waited for Atlas to stop hugging him, then turned to whomever else had remained with them. “May I speak to Viper?”

There was literally no protections were in place. He appeared in a large lab. A person with dragon wing and tail, kyo who had been fighting viper at first, Jack was talking with a short and stubby scientist who had stubble on his chin and a kind smile. Viper was strapped down on a table passed out with a distressed look resting on their face.

Because he doesn’t want to mess up the character development/mental breakdown. Getting hug from the Antagonist himself is a good way to decide people maybe do care after all.

everyone in the room jumped except dax who looked up. He was typing. "Oh hello sir." He quickly walked to rebus and gently put a hand on his arm. "Eh please step back. Ive figured out what happened to them and if you could just give me a moment I'd like to tell you this."

"Do you like it?" Malevolence's voice was projected directly into Cricket's mind. "I started work on this shortly before visiting the Dreamsmith. Inspired by Nullite and its applications, the technology utterly eliminates all electromagnetic radiation, soundwaves, and even many magical wavelengths. Of course, I can see perfectly, thanks to my bond to Darkseeker." A mental image of Malevolence sneering filled Cricket's consciousness. "All that to say, I will not be bullied by your threats, Cricket. I do not fear you or Rebus. Both of you are cowards, too afraid to take the bold steps needed to reach your goals. If you would oppose me, then do so now. Otherwise, continue your vendetta with Rebus."

Unintelligible through the portal, which opened up in front of the gate that guarded the entryway into the manor. He crossed to the gate quickly, examining it. "It's locked!" He glanced at Cadewyn. "Think that Plotblade can cut through it?"

A sophon entered the drone and read the signal directly from the drone's memory. Using the drone's own machinery, it sent a message back to Malevolence.

"Is there something you want from us?"

He laughed. "I'm an Enuller, Love. I thrive in darkness. That's all I am now, anywhere. Good trick though."

I’m not sure I understand exactly what’s happening is Rebus taking a portion of his power or making a copy or smth?

Equals was never the intent. When a small nation allies with a large one, is there ever any doubt they could be crushed by the larger?

Yes, any man wishes for more power. Yes, I wish I was equal in power. For that matter, I wish I was stronger. But that’s all pointless wishing. In reality, you are and will stay much stronger.

And I do see why not revealing myself is an issue. I was attempting to see how you would conduct yourself in that situation without trying to act in a certain way. I do apologize for misunderstanding that.

In the end once he becomes strong enough he’ll fight Vengeance, and I plan to give him a name change right before that but other than that I’ve got really no plans.

He pretty much just needs power and maybe allies

Asharak returns his attention to Renn. "I would suggest seeking out a Plotblade. That is something that has been on my list for quite some time as well. I might auggest speaking to Nameless about this; I still don't know much about the process."

"What kind of power do you need? I can make you a fullborn and give you chromaturgy. I'm also working with the Trisolarans to make a suit of armour, combining many different magic systems, to grant invulnerability to all physical and almost all magical attacks, except the straight-up reality altering ones. We still need to figure out how to make one immune to black holes."

Rebus turned, honestly surprised that this man would be so calm. He was either uninformed, foolish, or highly competent - and from his bearing Rebus suspected the third. “              was responsible,” he said, impeccably pronouncing the whitespace, “and Viper was able to duplicate the feat on me. It plunges you into a vision of your greatest fears and traumas - if you can, please tell me more.”

“It may have been - it seems to fluctuate, going from a katana to a dagger and back. It also may be yellow.”

“I picked it, Lyric. This is my fault more than yours.” Then Jack had an idea, and tried to remember whether or not he had touched the walls. Perhaps they could simply pick a direction and walk until they got out. “I got us here, but I think I can get us out.” 
For the record, at one point Jack touched a wall by dejectedly slumping against it.

Yeah - he’s taking a little fragment of his power to use as a key, and then copying a twisted version of the emotion warping. 
“Your actions are logical.” Rebus seemed to recover himself, the aura from Antagonist counteracting what Vengeance had done to him. Still, there was an alarming look in his eyes. “Oh, I am still frustrated, but you are right - you are more useful to me as an ally. I’ve killed most of your Horrors and generals, and intend to retain the remainder - you did instruct me to do so, but if desired I can acquire new underlings.” Rebus thought a message to the key he held, as Mischief was well suited to a task he wanted done. There is a man, perhaps even stranger than you are. Capturing him will not be easy, but I suspect you will find it entertaining. Then he continued, folding his hands together as his smile grew even wider. “So what do you propose of our partnership, Vengeance?”

He was either uninformed, foolish, or highly competent - and from his bearing Rebus suspected the third. “              was responsible,” he said, impeccably pronouncing the whitespace, “and Viper was able to duplicate the feat on me. It plunges you into a vision of your greatest fears and traumas - if you can, please tell me more.” 

“It may have been - it seems to fluctuate, going from a katana to a dagger and back. It also may be yellow.” 

“I picked it, Lyric. This is my fault more than yours.” Then Jack had an idea, and tried to remember whether or not he had touched the walls. Perhaps they could simply pick a direction and walk until they got out. “I got us here, but I think I can get us out.” 
For the record, at one point Jack touched a wall by dejectedly slumping against it. 

Yeah - he’s taking a little fragment of his power to use as a key, and then copying a twisted version of the emotion warping. 
“Your actions are logical.” Rebus seemed to recover himself, the aura from Antagonist counteracting what Vengeance had done to him. Still, there was an alarming look in his eyes. “Oh, I am still frustrated, but you are right - you are more useful to me as an ally. I’ve killed most of your Horrors and generals, and intend to retain the remainder - you did instruct me to do so, but if desired I can acquire new underlings.” Rebus thought a message to the key he held, as Mischief was well suited to a task he wanted done. There is a man, perhaps even stranger than you are. Capturing him will not be easy, but I suspect you will find it entertaining. Then he continued, folding his hands together as his smile grew even wider. “So what do you propose of our partnership, Vengeance?” 

dax nodded. "Well that was a separate occurrence. I believe that stemmed from a study of someone named Dark Ceps power. Either way." Dax scooted himself between Rebus and the table. "This is taken care of Dear."

Even if you’ve managed to recover Erryin, the fact that this is a skill that can be learned implies you need help, or any number of people could bring Viper back in an instant.”
