The only sign of movement other than the pair was the river, and that ... well, reportedly that wasn't safe either. "So, what's the story with you and the river?" Ixa said as they prodded at some of the rubble.

He considered actually doing so, but decided against it - there was nobody he particularly wanted to propose the wager to. “Ah - I’ve heard of that place, though I have never been. As for me, I shall start from the beginning - I am Dr. Rebus Honesty Clarke, and I am a Narrator. In addition to granting me a variety of powers, this means I know the truth - as far as I can tell - about reality: we’re all made up by a group of people called Authors.” Rebus waited for that to sink it - for the belief or lack thereof in that statement would drastically alter the subsequent direction of the conversation. A lot of people are fully fictional, and hence almost inconsequential - the skeletons you were commanding, for instance, existed pretty much exclusively to fight and die, and have no real feelings or history. We, however, are more important characters: I - and I expect you - exist as mental models of people, personas that do have feelings and desires. I’ve even managed to break the fourth wall in my Author’s own daydreams and talk directly to him.” Named was silent for a long moment. "What must I do now?"

He would not be contained. He surveyed the destruction around him. A pity. He then prepared for his final stand “Your death would not deny me much, but if you wish to surrender I will spare you.” Rebus said, Antagonist materializing in his hand. 9 hours ago, TwinStorm said: Cricket cursed. Anything that involves other people will likely involve more than one Author, and anything that involves more than one Author will generally remain onscreen.”

Of course, I wouldn’t be dead and you’d get kicked out of the party, so it would be rather pyrrhic.” — Rebus nodded approvingly, though the actual benefit of Atreides’s actions was questionable, since they had been offscreen. “Well done. Did you ever receive the army I gathered for you to command?”
