Oh no thanks

Cricket brought more water and stood on the other side of Tam, staring at her, anxiously.

He cooled it sufficiently and gently set her hands into the next water. He'd already set her up in the chair, and dragged a small table over to hold the pot. "That should be everything. Do you think we should wake her up, or should she sleep? --Natural sleep would be better, but... what did she say before she left?"

He spoke softly, still staring at her. “I tried to comfort her. She didn’t want that, and stormed off. I… I should’ve followed her, known it was dangerous! She could’ve died as I tended the fire!”

He fell to his knees, sobbing, putting his head in his hands.

"Hey." Bat knelt next to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "What you did was right. People need space sometimes, and you respected that before going after her. She's gonna be fine. I promise."

He hoped.

Unless something went awfully, terribly wrong.

Actually, he couldn't take this anymore. His medic mind broke, and he stood up and gave her the energy leaf.

They did just kill my best servant, who was highly competent and an extremely powerful Enuller, with some enhancements.

Do not worry, I will be careful and efficient. They will never know what hit them.

Rebus stands up and recalls his soul from the copies of him. They continue what they are doing, run by emulations of Rebus’s personality. “I was unaware of that limitation. Your pamphlet did not include it. Are there more rules?” He waits till they’re specified, then clasps Omen’s hand again.
The now-artificial Rebus copy sighs. “How did you patent it, then? Oh - the employer who asked you to destroy your employers didn’t include any exceptions. Take that as you will. Oh, and I cannot hear you now.”

"My pamphlet was incomplete. I shall have the dead Narrator update it." If mist could be said to frown, then Omen's foggy face is certainly frowning. "There are no other rules that you need to be aware of at the moment. Begin your trial." Fog envelops Rebus, and he is drawn into the vision.

Rebus stands in a laboratory. Beside him Balitan, a genius scientist that he's been working with for years, laughs suddenly. "I've done it!"

An intercom crackles to life nearby the artificial Rebus. "I patented it by not telling anyone else how to make it! Only thing that works in the world of evil."

I see, the voice said disdainfully. That's disappointing. I shall find something else.

A slight acknowledgement followed in the second channel.

Terribly sorry that I couldn't help you. Be sure to call me if you need any other help.

Malevolence ends his communication and walks over to his lab to begin work on a person locator. I wonder what an Enuller is? Probably some sort of wizard.

Cricket looked up at him, still crying. “Thanks.” he whispered.

Excellent. I will warn you, Chaisler is an Enuller, and Lennox is a Narrator. In addition, they have several powerful friends, some of whom even wield Plotblades.

"Of course. It's true." Nervous, he tapped his fingers on the table while he waited for Tam to wake up.

Malevolence nods to himself, then shuts down the communication to go create a device capable of finding the ones his new evil overlord had requested him to kill. "There's that word again, Enuller. And Narrator. I wonder what those are? And what's a Plotblade? Ah, I'm sure it's unimportant. The power of technology surpasses all else."

Cricket was also nervous. What would she say?

@Through The Living Glass let’s do this!

The very first thing Tam noticed, when she came to, was the pain.

It was a sharp, constant, aching pain that shot through her body every time she dared to breathe- and it didn't help that she was feeling particularly weak, either.

The second was that she felt undeniably freezing. It was like someone had dug out her bones and replaced them with ice, and that she slowly freezing from the inside out because of it. She could barely feel her hands, though . . . they were submerged in water? Her feet were too, strangely enough. Weird.

And the third was that she was, somehow, actually still alive.

She tried to process what was happening, but didn't dare open her eyes yet. She honestly didn't know if she could, even if she'd wanted to, given how she felt. She took some painful, shuddering breaths instead, trying to gather her bearings a little.

Bat felt relieved beyond measure. He sent Cricket for blankets ( @Ookla the Irreplaceable, unless he already got some).

“Hey,” he said softly, since she was probably at least a little disoriented. “How do you feel?”

He added some leaves to the last kettle of melted snow and returned it to the fire.

She jumped slightly- which really hurt, and took a couple more deep breaths.

"Hey, Bat," she said, voice ragged. "Please- please tell me I didn't kill anyone this time . . ."

Goodniiiiiight :D

"Good," she sighed. "And . . . everything. Everything hurts."

Then she remembered . . . what had happened. Why she felt this way.

Oh no . . .

“Everything hurts,” he repeated under his breath. “Gotcha.” He bent next to his haphazard pile of medical things, grabbing two vials and three different pills. “Do you feel up to holding these, or do you want help taking them?”

“Truly? What we’ve been working for all this time? What is the secret?” Not yet knowing what “it” is, Rebus begins to improvise. He wracks his brain for more modified memories, and looks around the laboratory for context.
Artificial Rebus looks up, impressed Malevolence hacked his nanotechnology. “Interesting… how long have you been in this ‘world of evil’? It seems other evil people could benefit from these devices; a secret communication network that only works if their goals align with yours. It weed’s out heroic infiltration, too, though evil backstabbing wouldn’t be prevented unless you fine-tuned the device. Of course, it isn’t that important.”
